It entered a complicated production process with various directors, screenwriters, and cast members attached at various points. Filmmakers Norrington, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, F. Javier Gutiérrez, and Corin Hardy were initially signed to direct while Bradley Cooper, Luke Evans, Jack Huston, and Jason Momoa were all cast as Eric during various points in development. Skarsgård was announced as Eric in April 2022, along with Sanders as director. Filming began in July, occurring in Prague and Penzing near Munich. The Crow had its world premiere in New York City on August 20, 2024, and was released in France on August 21, 2024, and in the United States by Lionsgate on August 23, 2024. Bill tells us all about his beginnings as a touring musician, how he started a financial business, and then later became a full-time artist. He reminds us of the importance of working a day-job you actually enjoy while you build up your art career, proper gallery etiquette so you always have a good relationship with your gallery, and why you shouldn't try to find your voice and instead let it come on its own as you create more paintings. He also recounts the importance of being curious about other things outside of painting and art because it may just tie in perfectly into your work. Episode 255: On September 28, 2016, a police dog discovered the nude and decomposing body of a young woman on the grounds of Gabriola House, a famous and, at that time, abandoned mansion on Davie Street in Vancouver's West End. The body was that of Natsumi Kogawa, 30, a Japanese woman who'd been in Canada on a Visa to study English since May that year. Natsumi's friends and family had not heard from her since September 8, and she'd been officially listed as a missing person four days after that. On the same day as discovering Ms. Kogawa's body, police arrested William Victor Schneider, a man from Vernon, B.C. Schneider's brother Warren turned him into the police after William had told him where he'd put Natsumi's body and that he ‘done something bad.' Warren also recalled to police about overhearing a phone conversation during which he said he'd thought William had admitted to having killed Natsumi. The legal proceedings that followed dragged on into the fall of 2022. They also look at how art functions in the modern era with technology and innovation right at an artist's fingertips. This is part one of a two-part series. It was the campaign of my lifetime. A chance to work for not one but three of my heroes in one year, Bob and Elizabeth Dole and Strom Thurmond. 1996 was a great year. Some people have been critical of the campaign Bob Dole ran in 1996, but I doubt anyone could have done any better. The economy was booming and Bill Clinton was the master of campaigning. But Bob Dole gave him a run for his money and did something very impressive, in a year clearly trending toward a popular President, he kept him under 50%, and both houses of Congress stayed in Republican control. The work Bob Dole did in California, in districts of congressmen who were in trouble is what saved our majorities. As I remember CNN analyst William Schneider saying, "He helped save the Republican cause even if his own cause fared badly"Bob Dole's character shined throughout the campaign and I learned so much just watching from the sideline on how to act and treat people, how even on the Presidential level, you could still be a thoughtful, considerate candidate and stay true to your principles as a human being. Most importantly, I saw the price of freedom, every time he used his left hand to shake hands or held a pen in his right. Bob Dole said over and over on the campaign trail "I am certainly not Dwight Eisenhower, but I have always been proud of the vote I cast for Eisenhower and you want to be proud of the vote you cast, 10 years, and 20 years and 30 years from now" well I still am proud of the vote I cast for Bob Dole, it is the proudest vote I ever cast. In this episode we shall hear his announcement, his visit to the Greenville Christmas parade, a profile from ABC News just before the Iowa Caucus, and his resignation from Congress. Plus speeches from the most prominent members of the august body in which he served, the United States Senate. Thad Cochran, Ted Stevens, Strom Thurmond, Tom Daschle and Robert Byrd all take to the floor to talk about this giant of the Senate they considered it a privileged to have served with.
This week, Dan Neumann is joined by Hal Hogue and Erica Menendez, colleagues and consultants at AgileThought. In this episode, they are delivering a Scary Stand Up as a special edition for Halloween. Get ready for a unique, funny, and terrifying show where they are diving deep into how frightening certain aspects of an Agile life can be, from Daily Scrum to Sprint plannings. Dan, Hal, and Erica are sharing valuable examples and giving great tips and suggestions to enhance the daily work and move towards the set goals in an authentic Agile way. Key Takeaways ● Facilitating Daily Scrums can be scary! ○ When the Scrum Master is leading a meeting people tend to just focus on them. ○ Understanding the “why” behind the Daily Scrum is crucial. ○ The Scrum Master needs to give the team space. ○ Respecting the time box is necessary. ○ Collaboration needs to take place throughout the day, not only during Scrum meetings. ● The Chickens and Pigs metaphor is outdated, stop using it! ○ There is a danger in using the chickens and pigs metaphor since it creates walls and barriers to collaboration. ○ It has not been in the Scrum Guide for about a decade. ● Instead of too much chattering, a board can be used as a visual tool to help coordinate the plan for the next 24hrs in a Daily Scrum. ○ Remember that a board cannot replace a conversation. ● Scary Sprint Planning! Boooohhhh! ○ Stop bullying someone for a task that is carried over, it is the whole team's responsibility in the first place. ○ The Scrum values should be embodied all the time. ○ The team is really working towards the Sprint Goal, is not a really big deal if one task is carried over. ○ Remember to define the Why, the What, and the How. ○ Being remote makes the work even more challenging. ● Sprint Reviews can be horrific! ○ A short Sprint Review does not mean it is a good one! Are you considering the reason behind it? ○ Sprint Reviews are great opportunities for feedback, don't waste them! ○ What is the Increment like? Where does the team want to go next? ○ Everybody should be together in a Sprint Review. ● Embrace your scary stories, this is how you learn and improve! In 2016 Natsumi Kogawa was a 30-year-old woman from Japan who was studying in Vancouver BC. Her light shone brightly to all who knew her. She was murdered by a career criminal, sexual predator, and violent offender named William Victor Schneider. Schneider would initially confess to the murder and the evidence would also prove guilt. However, William Schneider has recently won an appeal in his murder conviction. This episode walks through the details of the appeal, the new trial, and Schneider's possible release.
Oftentimes, when organizations bring on Agile Coaches, they want to be (or expect to be) taken on a linear path with Agility (AKA point A to point B). However, there is a lot that happens along an Agile transformation journey that interrupts this path of “point A to point B.” Today’s guest, Quincy — a Director in AgileThought’s Innovate Line of Service — refers to these as “excursions.” In an Agile transformation journey, it is crucial to explore these excursions and understand all of the pieces that you should put into place to ensure their success. In this conversation, Quincy explains what excursions are, why they are important; the different types of excursions that can occur during an Agile journey; the key areas of sustainability, consistency, competency, and maintenance in an excursion; and the important pieces that leadership support and communication play in an excursion’s success. Key Takeaways What are “excursions?” Excursions are detours that happen along an Agile transformation journey These excursions often involve many different facets An excursion could be taking a business outcome (such as “better speed to market”) and getting more specific and nuanced on it An excursion is still part of the transformation journey (so you can’t isolate it from the work that the teams are doing) Several excursions can occur at the same time What are some of the types of excursions that can occur during an Agile journey? Clarity of desired business outcomes Better speed to market Introducing a new product Introducing a product that you already have into a new market Quincy’s advice about excursions: Sometimes you may have to bring on a new expert during an excursion that specializes in that specific area and bring them into the journey (in cases like these, it is important to acknowledge your and your team’s knowledge barriers) Really consider who should be a part of each particular excursion There are many aspects to the Agile transformation and many different types of excursions — it is important to not box things in and know that it is a multifaceted journey Advice around the Agile approach to excursions: Sometimes Scrum might not always be the best fit for your organizations so it is important to have an excursion that serves as an evaluation to figure out which Agile approach is best for the team/s (and which approach is best where — because there may be more than one approach [alternatively, agility might not even be the right approach at all]) Excursions should also be taken to discover which methodologies and frameworks should be used Some organizations, when they’re new in their transformation journey, tend to make assumptions rather than take excursions (but it’s crucial as an organization to take excursions because no two companies are alike and one company’s approach may not work for yours) Experimentation in and of itself can become an excursion Areas of sustainability, consistency, competency, and maintenance in an excursion: In aiming towards sustainability, it is important to ask whether or not you have put the pieces of the puzzle in place so that the system can run on its own You can’t reach sustainability without consistency It’s important to have a consistent definition of “done” (if every team has a different definition, it will be hard to consistently deliver quality) Leverage the strengths that are already within the teams and company Though the maintenance is part of the journey, it’s more so post-journey and is becoming more and more critical for companies to do Maintenance is really critical — Ask yourself: How do you maintain what has now been transformed? How do you maintain the culture that you’ve now built, the consistency that you have put in place, and keep a freshness to the cadences of the workflow? If you don’t have a maintenance piece in place, many of your efforts will be derailed Your excursions need to have sustainability, consistency, and an understanding of what maintenance is going to look like from the get-go The important pieces of leadership support and communication in an excursion: Consistency and sustainability need to be supported by leadership Leadership has to let everyone know periodically that everything is okay or “Everything will be okay, but these are the things we’re dealing with right now” (Communication is key) Active leadership is key in a transformation journey As a leader, you can’t negate sharing the bigger picture so that the teams can consistently correlate what they’re doing on a daily basis to the bigger business outcomes Quantity does not always equal value (as a leader it is important for you to consistently support your team/s on a regular cadence in an active way) Mentioned in this Episode: Quincy Jordan McKinsey’s Three Horizons Model The Cynefin Framework Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep: “Spotify, Schmotify: Do Your Own Agile Thinking” Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep: “Exploring an Experimental Mindset with Adam Ulery” The Reengineering Alternative, by William Schneider Want to Learn More or Get in Touch? In 1942 he adopted the stage name Robert Pagent and was the square-dance caller in the premiere of Agnes de Mille's cowboy-themed ballet, ''Rodeo,'' one of the first attempts to introduce the imagery of the West into classical dance. He became a close friend of de Mille and the choreographer Jerome Robbins. Welcome to the first episode of 2020! In this first episode back into the new year, Dan Neumann will be taking a look at organizational culture. It’s often said in the Agile community that the culture has to change within an organization for Agile to take place. When it is thought of like that, changing culture can be a pretty tall order. But in William Schneider’s book, The Reengineering Alternative: A Plan for Making Your Current Culture Work, he outlines a framework to make your current organization’s culture work. In this episode, Dan will be taking a look at the key concepts of Schneider’s framework and exploring the four cultures he categorizes every organization into — also known as the four Cs. There’s no one-size-fits-all for the perfect culture to support Agility in an organization. Your results will be much more effective if you work with your organization’s current culture — so be sure to tune in to learn how to fully leverage your current organization’s culture! Key Takeaways The four Cs of organizational culture: Collaboration: Similar to a family in their social nature Derives their strength through affiliation Strengths: very team-focused, participative, values diversity, and are a generally fairly trusting organization with lots of open and honest communication Weaknesses or downsides (when the pendulum swings too far into a collaboration-based culture): the harmony of the group may be valued over the frankness that’s needed to talk about tough issues, and there may be too much compromising and too much movement towards consensus building and collaboration versus being clear about how decisions get made and collaborating within the defined framework (i.e. trouble making and sticking to decisions) Important to consider: collaboration culture can be great, but just make sure the pendulum hasn’t swung too far to the point where the organization is ignoring misbehaviors or shortcomings; instead, tackle them head-on within the culture Control: Similarly modeled to the social institution of the military Power-oriented Leaders are awarded for power reasons Strengths: emphasizes strength; very effective at planning; and there are clear systems, policies, and procedures in place Weaknesses or downsides (when the pendulum swings too far into a control-based culture): people will begin to rigidly adhere to the policies and practices without ever stopping to improve them, innovation may stop within the organization, and it becomes difficult to have generalists (which can be very important on Agile teams) Important to consider: control culture is not anti-Agile, but if you are looking to embrace the values and principles of Agile, you have to keep the culture in perspective Competence: Similar to the social institution of a sports team or university Rewards staff that are achievement-focused Can be very creative and visionary and values craftsmanship Strengths: organizations are task-driven, tend to be very efficient and objective, and have high-performance standards Weaknesses or downsides (when the pendulum swings too far into a competency-based culture): individuals may go on ‘technical tangents’ and are spending too much time in ‘analysis paralysis’ (i.e. trying to find the ‘perfect’ solution instead of moving forward with building), overplanning, and may become too emotionally controlled with no willingness to deal with interpersonal conflict Important to consider: make sure that the organization’s culture is not striving to win at all costs but instead focusing on completing tasks and achieving objectives Cultivation: Similarly to a religious institution in their social nature Values growth and self-actualizing Generally non-profit organizations Strengths: these organizations tend to be personal, nurturing, inspiring, fairly subjective, help people self-actualize to be their best, and provide lots of opportunities for growth and development (which can be very helpful for an Agile team) Weaknesses or downsides (when the pendulum swings too far into a cultivation-based culture): way too much self-expression, too much time focused on feelings and worrying about the slightest offense that may have been taken, favorites may be played in the organization, and emotions may begin to trump the place of data Important to consider: make sure the pendulum doesn’t swing too far into cultivation as the notions of measuring and managing would have a hard time really taking root Mentioned in this Episode: Agile Coaches’ Corner Ep. 58: “How to Get Past the Two-Week Shelf Life of Your New Year’s Resolution” The Agile Manifesto The Reengineering Alternative: A Plan for Making Your Current Culture Work, by William Schneider Susan DiFabio’s LinkedIn Team of Teams: New Rules of Engagement for a Complex World, by General Stanley McChrystal, Tantum Collins, David Silverman, and Chris Fussell How to Measure Anything: Finding the Value of Intangibles in Business, by Douglas W. In this episode of Beyond Footnotes, we explore the history of the American West through music. Our guest is William Schneider, a second-year graduate student who recently completed his Master thesis “Music and Race in the American West.” We discuss how music is a valuable form of historical analysis, despite being underutilized by historians, and that it plays a significant role in understanding racial power dynamics in the 19th century American West. Will also describes his experience writing a thesis; from the beginning research to the defense, which is enlightening information for those working on a masters or honors thesis. Keep an eye out on PDXScholar (http://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/) for access to Will’s thesis,“Music and Race in the American West.” He is slated to graduate this quarter. His research focuses on the social and intellectual history of the United States with an emphasis on the 19th century.
