World Backup Day falls on March 31st - the day before April Fool's Day because not backing up your data is no joke. In this episode, hosts W. Curtis Preston and Prasanna Malaiyandi discuss alarming statistics about data loss and why proper backup strategies are essential for business survival. The hosts break down the famous 3-2-1 backup rule and how it applies to both consumers and enterprises. They examine the growing threat of ransomware, including double extortion attacks where criminals not only encrypt your data but threaten to publish it. With 94% of companies that suffer major data loss failing to recover, and 70% of small businesses closing within a year of significant data loss, World Backup Day serves as a crucial reminder to implement robust backup strategies that include immutable storage and protection for often-overlooked SaaS applications.Stories from this episode:https://www.forbes.com/sites/tomcoughlin/2025/03/31/march-31-is-world-backup-day/https://objectfirst.com/blog/world-backup-day-2025/https://www.backupwrapup.com/peter-krogh-who-coined-the-3-2-1-rule-on-our-podcast/

Ergo, Ireland's largest indigenous IT solutions provider, has announced the launch of its new Cyber Resilience and Cyber Recovery Service offering to coincide with World Backup Day. Ergo's offering is a robust end-to-end solution designed to safeguard organisations against cyber threats and ensure rapid recovery in the event of a cybersecurity incident. The growth of Ireland's digital economy has created both significant opportunities and challenges for businesses across all sectors. Approximately 41% of goods and services produced in Ireland are now transacted digitally, including both digitally ordered and digitally delivered products. As a result, cyber threats pose serious risks not only to individual businesses but also to the broader economy. Cyber threats are constantly evolving and becoming more sophisticated, and ransomware attacks globally and in Ireland, are on the rise, with global security spending expected to grow by 12.2% year-on-year in 2025. If an organisation's backup solution is not immutable, it can be entirely compromised by cyber-attack, making an organisation not only vulnerable to losing business critical data but also negatively impacting its bottom line due to unplanned downtime, reputational damage and potential regulatory penalties. Figures from Ireland's National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) show more than 5,000 cyberattacks were reported by companies in Ireland in 2023 with an unknown quantity of unreported attacks. Regulatory pressure in the form of NIS2, DORA, CER, PART-IS, have also forced organisations across most sectors, to have cyber resilience policies and protections in place. In today's world, businesses must be more resilient and prepared for the potential risks and threats inherent with digital platforms. Ergo's new offering, available in Ireland and Northern Ireland, leverages the latest technologies and best practices to provide an end-to-end approach to cyber resilience, from backup management and rigorous testing to 24/7 monitoring and incident response. In the event of an incident, Ergo's Cyber Resilience and Cyber Recovery Service offering, ensures that businesses can recover efficiently and effectively. Commenting on the launch, Lorne Chedzey, CIO at Ergo said: "With the increasing prevalence of cyber threats, it's no longer a question of if, but when, a business will need to recover from an incident. We've seen an uptick in the number of attacks targeting organisations of all sizes, which show no signs of slowing down, and if we follow the trends, are only going to get worse. "With scores of Irish organisations reporting significant instances of cyberattacks as reported by the NCSC each year, something needs to change. "Our new Cyber Resilience and Cyber Recovery Service Offering is designed to provide peace of mind, ensuring our clients are prepared for whatever comes their way. World Backup Day is a timely reminder of the importance of both data protection and robust cyber resilience." 304 Kein Backup? Kein Mitleid! Gadget Detective - A selection of free tech advice & tech news broadcasts by Fevzi Turkalp on the BBC & elsewhere

Fevzi Turkalp, the Gadget Detective, joins Vernon Harwood to discuss the latest tech news and reviews. World Backup Day reminds us all to make sure we have all those important files securely backed up in case our devices fail or fall foul to ransomware. What are the best ways to go about this? Plus one-time passwords, as used by the likes of Amazon and eBay, are in the news. These passwords are issued when the item is despatched, for you to give the driver upon delivery, but is this as secure as it should be, or is it open to abuse and leaving the customer vulnerable? How can we protect ourselves? First Gadget of the Week is the Crucial X8 External SSD. Available in 1, 2, and 4TB sizes, these extremely fast but small external USB-C solid state drives are an ideal way to back up all of those important files from a PC, laptop, phone, or tablet. Second Gadget of the Week is Synology DS220+ NAS Enclosure. This is a hard drive enclosure into which you fit 2, 4, or 8 standard hard drives, which then connects to your home or office network and allows you to back up and access enormous amounts of data safely and securely. Third Gadget of the Week are the Western Digital Red range of hard drives. Ideal for using in a NAS enclosure, such as the on mentioned above, these drives offer massive storage capabilities and are ideal for use as back-up devices. This reminded this Gadget Guy of an article I was inspired to write for the Edmonton Sun 22 years ago not after watching the news or a show about Technology, but rather a TV Show about Women – specifically Bravo's Sex and the City. It's an update to the 2001 article with a humorous look at how I went about writing the article what transpired in Season 4 Episode 8 appropriately titled: My Motherboard, My Self, where Carrie Bradshaw - played by Sara Jessica Parker has her Mac PowerBook G3 laptops crashes and all the trials and tribulations around it including her questioning her relationship with her then boyfriend Aidan who interestingly is a PC user.  The podcast also talks about backups and the importance of them as well a lessons Carrie learned about backups and relationships. Why do we need to backup data? Why is it important? Whose responsibility is it to protect your data?In recent years, as people and businesses have begun to adopt cloud storage and SaaS solutions, they have become increasingly complacent with backing up their data. Gone are the days when we had memory sticks and external hard drives storing copies of our data. Now, the reliance on those cloud solutions has caused a common misconception that data is protected and backed up by those solutions.Ahead of World Backup Day on 31st March, Scott and Nick are joined by guest-speaker James Bergl, previous Vice President of one of Australia's leading Cloud Backup Providers, Datto, to discuss all things backup.Over a bottle of wine, the three talk about cloud backups, evolving views, where your data may be living, backup versions, and discuss a recent situation that had a great effect on many businesses.Learn more: https://www.tribetech.com.au/services/secureofficeTalk to TribeTech: https://www.tribetech.com.au/contact Subscribe to the WineDown: https://www.tribetech.com.au/winedown

This is a slightly different episode of The Weekspot. We had to record a little earlier because of the Easter weekend in the UK, and Matthew wasn’t able to come on because of prior commitments.   So, instead of talking to himself for an hour and a half, Colm drafted in two lovely guests: Josh Wise of VideoGamer and Rich Walker of Xbox Achievements.   It’s good he was able to call on some old pals, too, because a surprising number of things happened between last week’s episode and recording this one. Headlines & Hot Takes is full of Cyberpunk 2077 (remember that?) and Witcher chat, as CD Projekt Red published a big strategy presentation video, last week. And, the boys chat about the possibility of Alan Wake 2 after some rumours popped up online in the past few days. Also, they obviously had to celebrate the recent World Backup Day in Tech Corner.   Given the fact Colm had no time to play new games for today’s show, he was extra delighted to have Josh and Rich on. Show and Tell is all them. Firstly, Josh was able to play the first 10 hours of the upcoming Nier Replicant, so he outlines how that one is shaping up. And, while we’re bending the rules a little here, Josh recently played Monster Hunter Rise on Switch, so he gives PC players an idea of what they can expect in 12 months. Also, the two guests couldn’t contain their disgust, so there’s more Balan Wonderworld chat on this week’s show.   With an extra body on the pod, Colm decided to play quizmaster for a special remix edition of Mystery Steam Reviews. And they round out the show by opening The Weekspot mailbag to answer your Burning Questions on forgettable games they played for a very long time and Easter eggs.

Our examination of every "backdoor pilot" episode of The Facts of Life continues... because we know what the people want. "Brian and Sylvia" was an odd 1981 attempt at a Facts of Life spinoff series. The premise: Tootie's Aunt Sylvia is a Buffalo TV news anchor, and Brian is her husband, a hockey coach played by pre-MacGyver Richard Dean Anderson. So if you're looking for early 80s mixed-marriage jokes that have not aged particularly well, this sitcom delivers the goods. Our conversation somehow also includes Willona from Good Times, the short-lived Sanford and Son spinoff Grady, a weird Thanksgiving at Plimoth Plantation, suffering through Godspell in junior high, and Tootie's aunt as a space princess on Jason of Star Command. Also: Kornflake is on Earth Station One (to discuss The Commitments), Kevin is on The DragonCon Report (to discuss, you know, DragonCon), and it's World Backup Day. So back up. Small Biz Matters – a half hour program each week where you can work ON your business rather than IN it.with Alexi Boyd from Boyd Office Management ServicesDate: 17 April 2018 The Cloud. We get it, we use it. We count on it. Every day when operating as a small businesses we rely heavily on the cloud and internet storage. We assume it's safe, secure and backed up SOMEWHERE. We assume it's available anytime and reliable and we assume the content we produce is ours to do with what we wish. But we’re not careful enough. But like all things (except death and taxes as they say) you can’t be sure of it. You need to be in control with this extremely important tool of your trade. What if you can’t find an important document? What if the storage you relied on suddenly wasn’t there? What if you never backed up? Well today we have on the show another great expert; Gunnar Habitz to help us navigate through the complexities of Cloud storage but like always on Small Biz we’ll make sure you have practical strategies to ensure you take control. Welcome to the show Gunnar.   Topics we’ll be covering: Cloud overall Cloud storage vs. cloud backup comparing different tools How does a typical IT setup of Small Biz Owners look like Who should provide help How long to keep data How and how often to get data back Why isn’t all safe in the cloud Why storing in Australia is important (Dropbox stores in the US) The CEO view: Business Continuity and Risk Management instead of just backup Cyber insurance Ransomware attacks Example case of a disaster that really happened What about the new “Notifiable Data Breach” law in Australia What to backup how Practical tips How to get attention for the topic   Cloud overall (see graphs at the bottom of this document) Benefits for customers: agility, flexibility, choice, PAYG Public, Private, Hybrid cloud Cloud is a journey instead of destination Fear, trust, proof, procedures, risk management   Cloud storage vs. cloud backup comparing different tools Cloud synchronisation services: Dropbox, Box, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive Many of them don’t have versioning (Dropbox EVH has 120 days) What’s deleted on one device gets deleted on another as well upon connection Hard to get anything back from the cloud sync providers Proper cloud backup provides versioning in all possible local retention possibilities and clients can get back their data as part of the service by themselves of their partner   How does a typical IT setup of Small Biz Owners look like On-premises: notebook(s), printing, potentially a server for files or databases Cloud services like Office 365, Google G Suite, AWS, Xero/MYOB, CRM, specific apps   Who should provide help Managed Service Providers (MSPs) deliver IT as a service based on SMB demands including backup, but also on-premise infrastructure from capex to opex The Small Biz owner should focus on the business outcome, not on technology   How long to keep data? Legal companies often require 7 years, some even longer That makes moving between different backup technologies rather difficult   How and how often to get data back? User can retrieve data by themselves or via partner Restoring should be free as part of the backup pricing, not to pay extra for every restore According to a worldwide study of 2016, about 6% of restored data comes from accidently deleted files Database operation restoration is slightly less   Why isn’t all safe in the cloud Tricky balance: hard to get anything deleted when needed (e.g. wrong posting) while on the other side hard to find what has been there when needed Cloud sync providers run their own backups to provide their service with best possible availability rather than helping clients getting it back (even against $)   Why storing in Australia is important Many industries require data to be stored in Oz like healthcare for legal reasons Even NZ companies often cannot store their data in Australia The marketing departments of those companies often store data on Dropbox (no-go!) Storing data encrypted in the US is possible, but NSA might want to see on the way back Dropbox stores in the US for the premium experience vs. local law, but how to proof? Microsoft runs Azure in Australia and not in New Zealand (yet)   The CEO view: Business Continuity and Risk Management instead of just backup Worldwide standard ISO 31000 has been created by Australia/NZ initially (2004) Provides principles and generic guidelines on risk management Example: 6% of data restored * cost of getting it back (but how to estimate?)   Cyber Insurance Some see backup like an insurance, but the reality is different The cyber insurance covers for lost revenue in a data loss, but doesn’t get the data back The backup providers gets the data back, but doesn’t cover lost revenue It is a complementing solution usually not offered together   Ransomware attacks Talking about a concrete example Can arrive per email or even inside an internet connected printer or scanner   Example case of a disaster that really happened Usually we talk about statistics that 60% of SMB companies go out of businesses after a severe disaster within a year, 80% don’t survive the second year Spoken to a victim of a real story at the Australian Information Security Association (AISA)   What about the new “Notifiable Data Breach” law in Australia In place since 22 February 2018 to report data breaches within 30 days Most often data breaches haven’t been made public not to destroy brand value Fines now official: $360K for individual and $1.8M for companies if not reported on time Many IT resellers told at an ARN event that their customers are not ready yet European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) from 25 May goes even beyond, it aims primarily to give control back to citizens and residents over their personal data View of the Ransomware programmers: “if you don’t pay me in Bitcoin, then I will breach your data and force you to pay the fines”   What to backup how Different areas: Cloud Backup, Cloud DR, Endpoint Backup, Cloud to Cloud On-premise server into the cloud using leading software such as Veeam Some services are already in the cloud such as Exchange into Office 365 Even Office 365 is not covered by backup, therefore it needs e.g. SkyKick   Practical tips Forget about the rotating external HDDs which often have unencrypted, easily visible files in it Most important is redundancy, even use RAID 1 in a NAS to ensure availability Guidance rule of 3-2-1: 3 copies of the data, 2 kind of media, 1 offsite location Think to fail: what happens if building gone, NAS drive stolen, computer hacked Think to be back fast not to lose revenue and keep serving customers: use Disaster-Recovery-as-a-Service Use risk management to calculate the probability with the options Making sure you can not only save but extract the data   How to get attention for the topic Turning from backup (like dentist) into business continuity (winning smile) Business consultants often convince owners better than box moving IT resellers “World Backup Day” every 31 March (even backward) to raise attention to the topic Software vendor Veeam has even taken the 30 March as “Availability Day” to make the point not “you don’t have backup” but rather “you want to aim for availability”   To find out more, go to their website: www.keepitsafe.com or contact sales@cloudrecover.com.au

World Backup Day is a day for people to learn about the increasing role of data in our lives and the importance of regular backups. This independent initiative to raise awareness about backups and data preservation started out — like most good things on the internet - on reddit by a couple of concerned users. Let’s make this happen! In this new world of hacking, phishing, whaling, and ransomware, the CIO must embrace perseverance by consistently backing up files on the cloud and ensuring that this data is secure. On World Backup Day (March 31) spring is a great reminder to do so. Think of it as a data center spring cleaning behavior to roust out of its winter hibernation. I chat with Michael Gaffney, CEO of Leonovus on World Backup Day and encourage listeners to take the pledge. 1. I solemnly swear to backup my important documents and precious memories on March 31st.” 2. I will also tell my friends and family about World Backup Day - friends don't let friends go without a backup.

Happy World Backup Day, everyone! Well, maybe a couple days early, but we like to celebrate data backups all the time around here.   EP 35 - Happy World Backup Day! Before we get too far, I'd like to wish a Happy 23rd Birthday to my daughter! We'll see you this weekend and celebrate the best way you know how, by going to a hocke game! Now, on to other important matters. March 31 is World Backup Day. Back. Your. Data. Up. That is all... I lied, that is NOT all. Your data is your business! Throw on top of that all your photos, your music, personal financial documents and more, and there are few things in life that would make things as difficult as recovering from a data failure. At the VERY least, back up your data to an external hard drive or to another computer. Personal Cloud storage devices are relatively cheap and easy to add to a home or office network. Data companies like Dropbox and Carbonite have built a business out of managing backups for you. Check them out! A group calling themselves the Turkish Crime Family has claimed to have stolen passwords to 530 Million Apple iCloud passwords. Time to change your passwords, kids! If your Apple password has been stolen the thief can get access to your data, and even reset your phone. FedEx is offering $5 for you to turn on Flash in your browsers. Why should you NOT do that? Flash was proven to be an insecure browser extension years ago, so none of the modern browsers have it turned on by default.  FedEx needs to find a way to join the rest of us in 2017 and build a website that does not use this ancient, security-holed software. Have a good rest of your week, everyone!  Don’t forget to send us any suggestions for apps to review or people to interview. And subscribe to the BeBizzy Break Podcast on iTunes and Stitcher Radio.  And as always, leave the technical stuff to us!
