From our Exponential Risk breakout session, to joining us on InsTech podcast - this week we are spotlighting Neena Saith's valuable discussion on the science of resilience.  Resilience is a familiar term in insurance, often associated with mitigating risk and protecting against natural disasters. In this episode, Matthew Grant brings back Neena Saith, a former colleague and catastrophe risk analyst turned stress and resilience specialist, about the importance of managing personal stress in the workplace. Neena shares her journey from catastrophe modelling to working with individuals and organisations to help them recognise, understand and address stress. Anxiety. It's something we all experience at one point or another, but for some, it's a constant companion, a heavy weight that can feel impossible to shake off. For many, anxiety becomes a familiar pattern of worrying thoughts, tightness in the chest, and an overwhelming sense of dread that lingers in the background of daily life. But what if everything we've been told about anxiety is only scratching the surface? In this episode of The Happier Life Project, we explore a radically different approach to anxiety with Dr. Russell Kennedy, a physician, neuroscience expert, somatic intuitive, certified yoga instructor, meditation teacher, and professional stand-up comedian. Dr. Kennedy has spent decades grappling with chronic anxiety, and his own journey to understand and heal it led him to develop a groundbreaking method for treatment. He shares his insights in his Amazon #1 bestselling book, The Anxiety Prescription (or Anxiety Rx for our U.S. and Canadian listeners). Dr. Kennedy's approach challenges the traditional understanding of anxiety, proposing that it's not just a mental health condition, but an “alarm stuck in the body.” This shift in perspective has transformed how he heals himself and his patients. In this conversation, Dr. Kennedy explains how anxiety is often rooted in childhood trauma and presents that all anxiety is, at its core, separation anxiety. He introduces the concept of the "alarm-anxiety cycle," describing how it keeps us trapped in a never-ending loop of stress and panic. But here's the potential game-changer: Dr. Kennedy emphasizes that healing isn't about changing your thoughts—it's about changing how you feel in your body. He shares his powerful philosophy, “When you get anxious, look into your body,” and walks us through how somatic work—body-focused practices—can help us quiet the alarm and break free from the cycle of chronic anxiety. Throughout the episode, Gabby Sanderson and Dr. Russell Kennedy dive into the profound link between anxiety and addiction, exploring how anxiety often fuels harmful coping or masking mechanisms. They also discuss how to make peace with the alarm in your body, even when the person or people responsible for it aren't around, or are not capable to talk things through. Packed with practical advice, deep insights, and transformative tools, this episode will empower anyone struggling with anxiety, burnout, or addiction. If you've ever felt like anxiety is controlling your life rather than the other way around, Dr. Kennedy's approach could shift your perspective and give you the clarity and tools to heal. How much time, energy and money have you spent on talk-therapy and medications trying to deal with your anxiety?   Most people (doctors included) think anxiety is caused by a combination of genetics and stressful or traumatic events. It's a thinking problem that must be understood before it can be solved. So we spend countless hours combing through childhood traumas, assessing attachment styles and experimenting with substances to balance our brain chemistry.    With nothing to show for it. Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health diagnosis in the United States.   But anxiety isn't in your head, as most people assume. There is an alarm going off in your nervous system that causes overwhelming sensations of fight or flight, doom and gloom. The brain is simply projecting those feelings into whatever you're thinking about.    Healing anxiety requires you to address the root cause, which is the full-body, present-moment experience in your nervous system—not the story you're telling yourself about why you feel the way you feel.    Dr. Russell Kennedy is here to explain where anxiety lives in your body and how to use simple, somatic practices to create a sense of safety and calm in your nervous system so that you are no longer held hostage by your own mind.   What daily updates from me? Send us a textI just recorded a fascinating episode about anxiety that I had to share with you. I've been diving into this incredible book called "Anxiety Rx" by Dr. Russell Kennedy, and it's completely shifted how I think about anxiety management. Here's what blew my mind: We've been approaching anxiety backward!Instead of trying to think our way out of anxiety, we need to start with our bodies first. You see, when we experience trauma (and yes, that includes things like rejection or feeling shame – stuff we've all been through), those emotions get stored in our body as "alarms." Sometimes these alarms go off and we don't even know why. What happens next? Our brain tries to "help" by creating what Dr. Kennedy hilariously calls "brain droppings" – all those worrying thoughts that are really just distractions from what we're feeling in our body. The solution? Feel, don't think. I know, I know – easier said than done! But there's this beautiful practice Dr. Kennedy suggests:Place your hand on your heart (or wherever you feel the anxiety)Take slow, deep breathsSimply say to yourself: "I am safe in this moment"It's about treating that anxious part of yourself like you would a scared child – with compassion and understanding, not judgment. In this episode, I break down:The ALARMS system (what creates anxiety in the first place)Why worry is just a distractionPractical tools to work with your body instead of your mindThe ABCDE method for anxiety managementWant to learn more? Listen to or Watch the full episode below. And if you're struggling with anxiety right now, remember – I offer free anxiety audits where we can talk about what's going on and create a plan just for you, even if we never work together formally.Your anxiety doesn't have to be a life sentence. Today, I am blessed to have Dr. Russell Kennedy here with me. He is a medical practitioner who also holds a degree in neuroscience and is dedicated to assisting those with mental illness. In addition, he is the author of the book Anxiety Rx, a certified yoga instructor, a speaker with the National Speakers Bureau. For many years, he worked as a doctor during the day and a stand-up comedian at night, appearing in comedy clubs all over the country. His expertise is anxiety because he too suffered from it for a long time and wants to prevent others from going through what he did. He is well-known as The Anxiety MD.  Dr. Kennedy grew up with a father who had a lot of challenges and essentially faced many challenges himself. His father had schizophrenia and bipolar disorder and had a lot of trauma in his environment growing up. One of the reasons Dr. Kennedy became a physician was his feeling of impotence watching his dad decline over and over and he wanted to have power over illness somewhat. In this episode, Dr. Kennedy speaks about his experiences with mental illnesses. He also talks about his challenges growing up with a mentally challenged father and how he was able to transform into the man of medicine he is today. One of his teachers eventually became his patient and they had a laugh about the past. His seventh-grade bully also came to him as a patient. Meeting him was one of his biggest lessons he learned while practicing medicine. He realized that the bully was traumatized from childhood and took it out in the only place that he could. You cannot compare traumas. [13:00] The Biggest Enemy in Healing Anxiety You cannot expect a book to heal your anxiety. It only provides you with the framework, the work is yours to do. The biggest enemy in healing anxiety is an overprotective ego. An overprotective ego doesn't let you go back and experience the same pain that you were used to. Unless you can go back and feel it, you can't bring it to the surface, a place where you can start changing. You cannot change them unless you use feeling to change them. [29:13] Changing Your Physiology in Combination with Mindset The biggest thing in changing one's physiology is breathing. As soon as you focus on your breath, it naturally slows down. The mind usually runs too quickly that the body has no choice but to breathe quickly, shrinking down your chest. When your chest shrinks, it sends a message to the brainstem that you are in trouble. Your breathing becomes very shallow. [39:05] Understanding the Root of Anxiety, "Body Alarms", and Healing A lot of people don't even think to look at their body because their mind is usually moving too fast to process anything. When you are anxious or alarmed, you must investigate your body and find the cause. A lot of people who are of senior age haven't even thought of looking at the anxiety in their bodies. The mind reflects how the body feels. If you have an alarm in your system that's been there due to past trauma, your mind is going to react to it repeatedly until it becomes its go-to. [1:02:39] Unconsciously Reliving Trauma through Mind Regression If you have chronic stress like a lot of people, especially those who had a traumatic or abusive past, your mind gets pushed back into the time when you experienced such things. And yet through all of it, he struggled with crippling anxiety for decades. While listening I began crying because I felt a part of his story, was a part of my story as well.  I am a therapist and coach, have traveled to India and met the Dalai Lama, done hundreds of hours of therapy, tried plant medicine, published two books, have spoken on two TED stages, and have been raising two kids. If you didnt get your childhood needs met by an attuned, attached parent, your anxiety and alarm may be fed by a controlling "Alpha Complex". This episode will help you see if you were an Alpha Child who is now an Alpha Adult - and what you can do about minimizing its impact on your anxiety and alarm. Thank you for listening and you can find me on IG here: @theanxietymd if you have any questions. P.S If you're anything like me, you've tried every traditional therapy under the sun (CBT, medications, counseling, the list goes on…) and still can't escape from anxiety. So, don't you think it's time you took an unconventional path? It took me years of struggling through painful, debilitating worrying before I finally unlocked new, non-traditional methods to ease and heal my pain. I wrote Anxiety Rx so that you don't have to suffer as I did — so you can finally understand and move away from negative rumination and worry, moving instead (perhaps for the very first time) towards a sense of peace and comfort in your own skin. With degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology, plus experience with the “unscientific,” psychedelics, somatic intuition, and the inherent wisdom of the body, I've put everything I know together and created an approach that blends both the art and science of healing from chronic anxiety and worry. If you're ready for a brand new prescription that will guide you to heal your anxiety, not just cope with it, this is the book for you.      You can order my book by clicking here

There is a theory that states that if you experienced a significant trauma as a child, part of you stays locked at that certain age until it gets brought back up. Mirror work deals with this by reminding yourself that you are living in the present. AND MUCH MORE! Our bodies can be a wealth of information if we take the time to listen to it.  I think most of us would agree that when there is something physically going on in our bodies,  it is generally easier to listen to it.  However,  even though we can feel it, sometimes we might not really hear it. It's the same thing when we are experiencing an overwhelming amount of emotions, in particular anxiety and worry.   When we experience a high level of overwhelming emotions, our body and mind feels threatened in some way.  And when this happens the tiny area at the base of our brain, called the hypothalamus, sets off an alarm system in our body.  Our brain and body have become hijacked with an overwhelming amount of emotions.  And when the alarm goes off, a surge of the hormones cortisol and adrenaline are released throughout your body.  And when cortisol levels rise, all the body's energy goes into handling the perceived threat instead of doing what it is supposed to do in a normal, relaxed state, like regulating the digestive and immune systems, for instance.  When your adrenaline levels are high, your heart rate increases, your blood pressure increases, and your energy levels increases.  Now this is a very normal reaction when you really are in a threatening situation, like being chased by a lion, for example, running for your life. But when the stress levels stay high in the absence of a real life or death threat, that can create anxiety and depression, as well as other mental and physical health issues. In this episode I will teach you what your body is tryin to tell you to do  when you are in this heightened state of emotion so that you can feel relief.  And, spoiler alert, it is NOT thought work.I reference the book "Anxiety RX"  by Dr. Russell Kennedy, which you can find herehttps://a.co/d/6ntFoLnTo connect with Angela AdamsShoot me an email: angela@angelaadamscoaching.comTo get on my calendar, click on this link: https://coachwithangela.as.me/Visit my website to subscribe to my weekly email: https://www.angelaadamscoaching.com/To access your FREE guide to managing your emotions: https://www.angelaadamscoaching.com/lead-collectionI would appreciate your help! I'm just fascinated by all of your work. And I just really wanted for the audience to hear about the way you're trying to change the way people look at anxiety, because that's what this book is really doing. Dr Russ Kennedy  01:30Yeah. Yeah, it's really about, you know, so much of anxiety therapy involves changing the thoughts of your mind, right? And what if the thoughts of your mind are the problem? What if they're just the symptom? So you know, like you if you have, if you have a viral infection, you have a fever, the fever isn't the problem. It's the viral infection, right? So, so what happens, I believe in anxiety is we get these old traumas from typically from childhood, but they can be inherited, you know, there's a bunch of ways that we get trauma into our system. And that trauma sort of reverberates that trauma energy reverberates inside of our body. Find the FULL Transcript Here: Season 8 Episode 2: Anxiety with the Anxiety MD, Dr. Russ Kennedy

Dr. Russell Kennedy, aka “The Anxiety MD” specializes in the art and neuroscience of helping people recover from anxiety disorders. He knows anxiety from the inside out, as he developed his own anxiety disorder (and suffered often crippling anxiety for more than 30 years) as a direct result of growing up with a dad with severe schizophrenia. Dr Kennedy has degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience and developmental psychology —but it's not all science, as he is also a certified yoga and meditation teacher and was a professional stand-up comedian for over a decade (no joke!) In his award winning book and audiobook, ANXIETY RX (an Amazon #1 Bestseller) he shows a practical, actionable program for anxiety relief that incorporates a combination of the latest in neuroscience of the mind with the grounding wisdom of the body —with the ultimate goal of relieving the alarm in the mind and the body so characteristic of anxiety disorders. Using neuroscience of the brain (think “The Body Keeps the Score”) and blending that science with a more somatic, artistic, body based approach he learned by living at a temple in India, taking psychedelics, and being a natural and gifted intuitive, Dr Kennedy gives a unique and never before seen understanding of what anxiety truly is, and further, exactly how it can be successfully understood and treated. His approach is novel and revolutionary in heavily focussing on the old trauma stored in the body, and not simply relying only on the usual cognitive approaches to anxiety relief. Dr Russ wants to make the pain he and his family suffered in living with a family member with a severe mental illness contribute to the healing of others and has devoted his life's work to make sure that nobody has to experience anxiety and emotional pain as he did. www.theanxietymd.comSource: https://businessinnovatorsradio.com/dr-russell-kennedy-the-anxiety-md-mark-stephen-pooler

Do you allow yourself to receive? Or are you doing most of the people pleasing/giving to others? When we see the world as a place that does not nourish us enough, as was often our childhood circumstance, we learn not to expect the world to help us, and actually CREATE a world that stops feeding us. We often BLOCK and RESIST any help the world does give us, and then blame the world for not filling our needs... INABILITY TO RECEIVE is a chapter in my book "Anxiety Rx", and if we don't see how we block good things coming to us, we will sabotage our own perception of the world, seeing it as a place where we don't get enough. But often we do get "enough", but just resist receiving it! Find me on IG: @theanxietymd & let me know how this episode lands for you!

AKA The Anxiety MD. His passion is to help people recover from anxiety as he too has struggled with chronic anxiety since childhood and he believes anxiety can help you rather than cripple you. His game-changing approach to managing anxiety starts with debunking the myth that anxiety is in the mind. Rather he profoundly speaks about how our anxiety stems from old energy from unresolved childhood trauma that is triggering an alarm in our body. And unless we understand and get to that root cause of our trauma, we will continue to let anxiety cripple us. We all deal with anxiety to some degree so this episode is for everyone and anyone. You'll learn more from Dr. Russ about: Understanding how and why anxiety is rooted in our body vs. our mind. How to identify and localize the alarm in our body that is triggering our anxiety and where the root cause is of our anxiety. What the alarm really means as it relates to your childhood trauma and how you should address it.How our mind is a meaning making machine and will compulsively want to add thoughts to our alarm in the body. The two different ways fears are processed in our brain. How to use the body to heal the mind.  How and why you must see your innocence to start healing from your past. Understanding social engagement system as it relates to building connections and soothe ourselves. Why children today have more anxiety than ever. Don't miss this enlightening episode with Dr. Russ Kennedy and share your thoughts with us @p.syoungerself and @theanxietymdTo connect with Dr. Russ , click here.  You can also purchase his game-changing book Anxiety Rx, here on amazon. How do you truly heal from your anxiety? How does cognitive bypassing help you overcome your fear and anxiety? Do you agree with these two statements: “You can't think your way out of a feeling problem.” and “You've got to feel it to heal it.” I believe both these statements are 100% correct. We live in a hyper intellectualized world where we try to solve every problem in the known universe with our intellect. Dr. Russell Kennedy, a fan favorite, coined this bad habit, “cognitive bypassing”. In today's episode, we discuss What cognitive bypassing is, and how to avoid doing it. He also introduces his book, where he shares how you can discover your alarm (his word for Anxiety), the importance of silence, and his ABC method. Look out for the different, and fun, analogies about facing our fear and anxiety and overcoming each one through silence, awareness, and compassion. We also get to hear an excerpt from Dr. Russell's recent viral article on cognitive bypassing, a sample of how amazing, unconventional and eye-opening his work is! Are you ready for another awesome episode? Then listen in and get blown away by all the great takeaways from this episode.   In This Episode: 0:30 Heather introduces Dr.Russell Kennedy and his book. 3:00 What is the concept of cognitive bypassing and how did Dr. Russell able to come up with it? 7:35 Heather shares an excerpt from Dr. Russell's article. 11:20 Dr. Russ shares his experience being a medical doctor and an intuitive, and how it affected his coaching. 13:15 How Dr. Russell discovered his own alarm and how he helps his clients in finding their own alarms? 20:48 Dr. Russell shares his thoughts for coaches or doctors who insist on the cognitive-behavioral mind model. 24:00 The importance of waiting, the difference between fear and anxiety, and not taking the mind's first offer. 30:00 Dr.Russell shares how he keeps his clients at the moment, how to be okay with their emotions, and their silence. 37:20 Dr. Russell's analogy in riding a bike and working as coaches, counselors, and intuitives. 38:48 Anxiety Rx, Dr. Russell's new book - what is it about and why he wrote it. 40:15 How mental anguish is reflected in the body, how to deal with it, and heal it. 47:47 Dr. Russell's advice about our thoughts and watching ourselves think, and his own experience. 52:40 Dr. Russell shares his ABC process - Awareness, Be (body and breath), Compassion (to yourself).   Soul Stirring Quotes: “Cognitive bypassing is really about how you intellectuallize the abuse that happened to you, the story you tell yourself around it to make you feel better. It is an unconscious implicit memory.” “There's nothing wrong with using cognitive strategies as a part of your emotional well being. However, compulsively adding cognition to emotion ensures your traumas can never fully heal.” “Don't take your mind's first offer.” “The real gold is sitting there in silence, uncomfortable. As intuitives, silence is our gold.” “Where do you feel your alarm? Put your hand on that spot and connect with that.” “That alarm is your inner child and that's the part you need to connect to.” “When people are in their old trauma, they are not in their cognitive rational brain.” “The feeling is not so bad, when we start adding thoughts to it that's when it cycles out of control.” “The alarm in your system is the cause of your anxiety.” “The mental anguish comes as a reflection of what's going on in the trapped energy of the body.” “Anxiety itself is just thoughts of the mind, it is not painful.” “Just watch your mind and get into sensation.”   Links Mentioned: Article from Elephant Journal:  https://www.elephantjournal.com/2020/10/cognitive-bypassing-you-cant-heal-feeling-with-thinking/ Dr. Kennedy's book, Anxiety Rx:   https://www.amazon.com/Anxiety-Rx-Prescription-Relief-Created/dp/1734426543/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=anxiety+rx+book&qid=1603403319&sr=8-3 Dr. Kennedy's Website:  https://dr-russ.com/
