Join Lisa and Laura for the last week of our 4-week Advent series, House of Gold. The Virgin Mary is called the House of Gold because she was Jesus' resting place: the one who threw the doors wide open with her YES. Mary made room for Jesus, and she has room in her heart for each one of us, too. This final week, they unpack the Marian title, Mary, Morning Star. Out of all the weeks in the Advent season, this is the week we really struggle to keep our eyes on Jesus. How can Mary, Morning Star, help us get everything accomplished in the next few days while remaining in Christ? Grab a coffee, hit play, and find out! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Galatians 6:9: And let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due season we shall reap, if we do not lose heart. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Luke 1:29: But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. 1 Corinthians 8:1: “Knowledge” puffs up, but love builds up. Invite Him in with this episode's reflection. Instead of a journaling question, as you go through the busyness of the day, be mindful to look up—up to the star—and to call on Mary. Show mentions. Mary made room for Jesus, and she has room in her heart for each one of us, too. In this third week of Advent, they unpack the Marian title, Mary, Queen of Martyrs. Why is Mary a martyr if she didn't die a martyr's death? Why are we focusing on suffering during the happiest time of year? These questions, and many more, are answered in today's episode. Grab a cup of coffee and settle in—you do not want to miss this episode! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Luke 2:35: And a sword will pierce through your own soul also. Ephesians 6:12–14: For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore. Mark 5:41: “Talitha koum,” which means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!” Romans 8:26: In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. (NIV) Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. Mary made room for Jesus, and she has room in her heart for each one of us, too. In this second week of Advent they unpack the Marian title, Mary, Queen of Peace. Everyone longs for peace, especially at Christmas, but true peace in our hearts and homes is going to take more than lighting a scented candle; we need to set our hearts on fire for Jesus. Who better to help us than His Mother, the Queen of Peace? Get ready to open your heart, open your Bible, and let Peace in! Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Join Lisa and Laura for our new 4-week Advent series, House of Gold. The Virgin Mary is called the House of Gold because she was Jesus' resting place: the one who threw the doors wide open with her YES. Mary made room for Jesus, and she has room in her heart for each one of us, too. This Advent we will prepare our hearts for the birth of our Savior by diving into a new title of Mary each week. Today, Lisa and Laura are excited to kick us off with a conversation about Mary, Cause of Our Joy. Have you ever struggled to find joy at Advent? Do you long for quiet preparation but always find yourself getting sucked into the constant doing? If so, you are in the right place. Today is a special day for Walking with Purpose. It's the Feast Day of Saint Therese of Lisieux, our patron saint! And at WWP, we are all about getting women into Scripture so they can encounter Christ personally and apply it to their everyday lives. This is why St. Therese is our perfect guide: she spent countless hours studying Scripture and sharing a simple way for us to experience God's Word that is personal and transforming. Today on the podcast, Laura Phelps honors the Little Flower as she shares three not-so-typical reasons why she loves Saint Therese and calls her a friend. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 2 Corinthians 12:9–11: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Proverbs 9:4: Whosoever is a little one, let him come to me. (Douay-Rheims) Matthew 11:28–30: Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Jeremiah 17:7: Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. Joshua 1:9: Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Psalm 116:6: The Lord preserves the simple; when I was brought low, he saved me. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. What character trait do you believe disqualifies you from becoming a great saint? Does the idea of being little and depending on God frighten you? What staircase are you trying to climb alone? Do you write letters? Maybe today is a good day to start. Show mentions. Thomas à Kempis, The Imitation of Christ Pope Pius VII, “She rediscovered the Gospel itself, the very heart of the Gospel.” St. Therese of Lisieux, The Story of a Soul Michael E. Gaitley, MIC, 33 Days to Merciful Love Henri Nouwen, quote Flourish: The Art of Being Human. Register here. Let's stay connected. Don't miss an episode. Join us for Lesson 6 in our six-week summer series based on our Living in the Father's Love Bible study, Loving Like Him Through Forgiveness. Lisa and Laura are firm believers that no matter the situation, forgiveness is crucial to living in freedom. The truth is, when we struggle to forgive, we are the ones who suffer. If you are in a place where the pain is too much, and you do feel like you haven't any control over the way to respond, this episode is for you. Grab your study guide and get ready to jump into a new perspective on forgiveness. Freedom, sweet friend, is waiting for you. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. Matthew 10:8: Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out devils: freely have you received, freely give. (ERV) Ephesians 2:8: For by grace you have been saved through faith; and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God. Isaiah 53:7,9: He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. Like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth…And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Invite Him in with this episode's question for reflection. There are three indications of having truly forgiven a person: 1. Not dwelling on the incident. 2. Not bringing up the incident again and using it against the person. 3. Not talking to others about the incident. Which of these aspects of forgiveness do you find most difficult? Show mentions. Join us for episode 15, in our brand new eight-week series, Be Strong: The Armor of God. Lisa and Laura will be diving into Ephesians 6:10–18, awakening us to the invisible battle that rages, while encouraging us to reach for the weapons that keep us strong and steady in any circumstance. If you're tired of feeling depleted and defeated, this series is for you. Open to Ephesians and grab a notebook and pen, because you are going to want to write every word down. Then, stand strong, as you open your heart, open your Bible, and invite Him in. Open your Heart to our key Scripture. 2 Corinthians 10:3–5: For though we live in the world we are not carrying on a worldly war, for the weapons of our warfare are not worldly but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every proud obstacle to the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. Open your Bible to other Scriptures referenced in this episode. Ephesians 6:10–18 Isaiah 14:12–15: How you are fallen from heaven, O Day Star, son of Dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, you who laid the nations low! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to heaven; above the stars of God I will set my throne on high; I will sit on the mount of assembly in the far north; I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will make myself like the Most High.” But you are brought down to Sheol, to the depths of the Pit. Ezekiel 28:11–19 Matthew 4:3: And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” Matthew 12:24: But when the Pharisees heard it they said, “It is only by Be-el'zebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.” 2 Corinthians 4:4: In their case the god of this world has blinded the mind of the unbelievers. 1 John 5:18: We know that anyone born of God does not sin, but He was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him. 1 Peter 5:8: Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. John 8:44: He was a murderer from the beginning, and has nothing to do with the truth. Invite Him in with this episode's questions for reflection. We mentioned three lies that the enemy loves to whisper to mess with our minds: I am alone. I am unlovable. I am powerless and hopeless. Do you find that any of these lies take up space in your head? Or is it a different lie? Write the lie in your journal, then take some time to journal the truth you know about God. Show mentions. Priscilla Shirer, “Sizing Up the Enemy” CCC 2851: In this petition, evil is not an abstraction, but refers to a person, Satan, the Evil One, the angel who opposes God. The devil is the one who “throws himself across” God's plan and his work of salvation accomplished in Christ. Laura Phelps, Victorious Secret: Everyday Battles and How to Win Them Richard F. As the mother of a Sandy Hook survivor, Laura Phelps tackles how to cope with unjust suffering. By unpacking lessons she has learned from Mary, the Mother of God and encountering Scripture, she shows how the interruption of suffering is actually an invitation to stand at the foot of the cross and enter fully into the life of Christ.

Latte and Laundry: A home for Catholic women, moms, and hearts
Hey Friends! Welcome back to a brand-new season of Latte & Laundry. We open up Season 3 with the start of a new year, 2022. For many of us 2021 was not an easy year. In fact, it was often filled with confusion and anxiety. Yet, through Christ's most perfect example at the wedding of Cana, we can see how the dry and empty can often be transformed into something beautiful and new. I am so excited to welcome my first guest of Season 3, my very dear friend and fellow podcaster, Bridget O'Boyle. In this episode we discuss how it is precisely in the crushing and pressing, that Christ is often making us into something new, most specifically new wine. New Wine, has been my anthem for the end of 2021, and something I hope to take into 2022 with me. Join Bridget and I as we discuss so many nuances of Christ's first miracle, turning water into wine, that we can all reflect and pray on. So friends, as we journey into 2022, as my sweet friend Laura Phelps recently told me, "Stay close to Mary and 'Do Whater He Tells You.'" And remember , just as St. Thomas Aquinas once beautifully said, "Sorrow can be alleviated by good sleep, a bath, and a glass of wine."
Laura and Allison discuss topics from Sweet Cross: A Marian Guide to Suffering (OSV). **Laura's story is incredible, powerful, and painful at times, but full of hope for the rest of us. She bore crosses we pray to never endure but united to Christ and guided by Mary's ten principle virtues, Laura opened my heart to not fear what the future may hold, because waiting for us in every circumstance is a love, peace, and grace that surpasses our understanding! Included in this episode: *Don't compare crosses*Suffering is important and necessary*Uniting our crosses to Christ is LIFE CHANGING*How can you possibly maintain your sense of humor in the face of difficult times?*Staying PLUGGED in through constant mental prayer - far easier than it sounds Stay Connected with Laura: www.https://www.lauramaryphelps.com

On Independence Day, 1839, Parley P. Pratt was a prisoner of the State of Missouri. Along with other early leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he had been arrested for his actions during the Missouri-Mormon War of 1838 (in Parley's case, the charge was murder). Convinced he would not get a fair trial, he and his fellow prisoners decided to risk everything on a high-risk jailbreak . . . in the middle of the town's 4th of July Celebration. This episode explores what it was like to be a locked up in Missouri in the 1830s, the way the guards mistreated both their prisoners and Black women of the town, and how Parley and the others carefully concealed their preparations (and then, in their excitement, almost gave it all away). Finally, how Parley's fellow prisoner -- Morris Phelps -- tried to evade capture by a posse by pretending to be a "true breed" or "Old Kentucky." Finally, it ends with the bravest member of the jailbreak team-- Mrs. Laura Phelps. To learn more about the story, you can check out The Autobiography of Parley P. Pratt (first published in 1873). To see court records, affidavits and other original sources for the Mormon War of 1838, you can visit the Missouri State Archives Mormon War Digital Collection, available at https://www.sos.mo.gov/archives/resources/mormon.asp.

A true legend in powerlifting and a pioneer in women's strength, Laura Phelps discusses how training to improve her physique accidently led her to discover her true passion: powerlifting. Gymnastics and marathon running had made her flexible and focused, but it was an unwavering confidence in her own abilities and heartfelt promise to a promoter that led Phelps to shatter world records right from the start. Strength, determination, and an abandoned department store all played a role in helping this one-time bodybuilder rise to the top of women's powerlifting.
