Agrologist Cory Davis joins me to unpack the environmental toll of animal agriculture—and the enormous potential of plant-based food systems to reduce emissions, reclaim land, and restore ecosystems. Cory brings a systems-level perspective that blends science, ethics, and practical solutions. He also does some serious myth-busting about “sustainable” local meat and “regenerative grazing”. Whether you're a climate advocate or curious about food's environmental impact, this episode will challenge what you thought you knew about sustainable eating. Cory is a licensed professional agrologist with over 10 years of experience in natural resource and environmental management. He is a co-author of “Plant-Powered Protein: Nutrition Essentials and Dietary Guidelines for All Ages” along with Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis, where he breaks down the environmental impacts of different protein choices. He also recently coauthored a paper in the Annals of Medicine titled "Health Disparities and Climate Change in the Marshall Islands".
In this episode of the No-Bullshit Vegan Podcast, registered dietitian and award-winning author Vesanto Melina returns to dive deep into all things vegan protein. With decades of experience in plant-based nutrition, Vesanto shares insights from her latest book, Plant-Powered Protein, debunking common myths about protein intake and addressing how different populations—from strength trainers to older adults—can optimize their nutrition. We discuss how protein needs change with age, why plant-based athletes may need to tweak their intake, and how the science behind protein recommendations has evolved. Plus, Vesanto shares her thoughts on the growing mainstream acceptance of plant-based diets, how restaurants and food industries are adapting, and why environmental sustainability is an essential part of the conversation. We also chat about fitness and longevity, including Vesanto's own inspiring approach to strength training at age 82 (spoiler alert: she holds a two-minute plank and takes five fitness classes a week!). We discuss how protein plays a role in maintaining muscle mass, especially for those in a calorie deficit, and why strength training is essential for long-term health. Whether you're a seasoned plant-based eater or just starting your journey, this episode is packed with evidence-based advice to help you fuel your body effectively—without falling for the protein myths. Tune in for an engaging and informative conversation that might just change how you think about protein on a vegan diet!

Climate change, and the noticeable environmental shifts we're experiencing like rising temperatures, wild fires, and melting glacier ice, is a hot topic. We're all concerned and seeking solutions. While the popular targets for reducing any further impact are the gasoline & fossil fuel industries, it will take a long time to shift our dependency and potentially at additional cost due to the energy sources that replace them. They're not infallible either. But there is another solution that can impact more quickly, and in a pretty significant way. It's animal-based foods. Sadly, this solution isn't being covered by mainstream media. Join me and my guest, Vesanto Melina as we discuss the environmental impact of animal product consumption and how we all can make small changes to have a net positive effect, not only on the health of our planet, but also ourselves and our families. If you are vegan or vegetarian, at some point, someone, somewhere, has probably asked you how you get enough protein. It's a common misconception that a plant-based diet is deficient in protein. However, in their new book, Plant-Powered Protein: Nutrition Essentials and Dietary Guidelines for All Ages, our guests today, dietitians Brenda Davis and Vesanto Melina, debunk the myth that you can't get quality protein without eating animals. The book provides an abundance of evidence for why plant protein is, in fact, the superior choice. This is their 7th book together and their 20th in total, many of them bestsellers. Brenda Davis is widely regarded as the Godmother of Vegan Dietitians. You might also remember Brenda from her amazing appearance on episode #92 of the Switch4Good podcast. Vesanto Melina is a consultant for the government of British Columbia and recipient of the prestigious Clintec Award for leadership in dietetics. Tune in to hear these plant-based pioneers set the record straight about the incredible power of plant protein! “We had been doing studies to figure out how good protein was, and they were done on weanling rats, four weeks old, and these little rats could double their weight in four weeks if they were fed cheese or meat. And those studies have still been a foundation for some of the protein quality assessments. For example, in Canada, we're still using Protein Efficiency Ratio as a standard. And not that many people I know, in fact, I can't think of one that I've met, want to double their weight in four weeks like these little rats did.” – Vesanto Melina What we discuss in this episode: Why plant protein is superior to animal protein for human health and the environment. How to get all essential amino acids on a vegan diet. The myth of protein combining and the foods that are most important to eat in order to get enough protein on a vegan diet. Tips for parents to ensure their toddlers get enough protein and calcium. The remarkable benefits of a vegan diet for children. How much protein do humans actually need at different stages in life? The importance of movement and using your muscles as you age. Ways to boost protein intake for seniors. The value of spending time outdoors. What to look for and avoid in a protein powder. We joke today that there are three things that plant-based eaters must face – death, taxes, and the dreaded question, “Where Do You Get Your Protein?!” Well, today, we tackle the ever-popular topic of protein with two of the authors of a recent book, Plant Powered Protein. Vesanto Melina and Cory Davis dispel the myths and misconceptions about plant-based protein - and - (and this is the part we love) make the science understandable and digestible. Let's put to rest that you can't get enough protein at various stages of life including pregnancy, infancy, childhood, adulthood, your senior years, and even for the athlete population. You can get plenty of protein and this book shows you how with easy-to-follow protein recommendations and recipes so that you never feel deprived or deficient. Let's also put to rest those myths that plant protein is somehow weaker or not complete. How can I build in protein at each meal? What might be a typical day's menu that gives enough protein and is tasty? Also, If I am not an experienced cook, how can I get started? Are plant-exclusive diets suitable for every stage of the life cycle? Can seniors avoid sarcopenia while eating only plants? Can we build muscle with plant protein? Registered Dietitian, Vesanto Melina, talks about vegan nutrition and her new book, Cooking Vegan. She gives practical tips and suggestions in vegan meal preparation.
Are plant proteins really incomplete? Can your body actually tell the difference between amino acids from plants and amino acids from animals? If you are at all curious about whether you can get optimal protein on a plant-based diet - or if you've ever heard that plant protein is incomplete - this week's episode of The Allsorts Podcast is a must listen (or watch)! There is a strong trend on social media right now that is trying to position plant-based protein as somehow inferior to animal protein which is showing up in a number of formerly vegan influencers remarking that they felt much better when they started putting animal protein back in their meals. As a dietitian, I am thrilled when someone finds a way of eating that works for them. We are all unique and have to do what is right for us. But when someone implies that plant-based protein is somehow inferior…all I've got to say is, “where is your evidence for that?” So I'm talking with Vesanto Melina RD, author of the brand new (and heavily researched) book Plant-powered Protein with Brenda Davis RD and Cory Davis. Vesanto is an iconic vegan dietitian who has been driving the evidence-based discussion on plant-based diets since before I was born. She and Brenda are the reason why all of us plant-based dietitians walk a much gentler path. They are both professional heroes of mine so I am deeply honoured to welcome Vesanto to this, the 50th (!!!) episode of The Allsorts Podcast. About Vesanto Melina RD: Vesanto Melina, MS, Registered Dietitian is co-author of books that have won awards internationally and received a starred rating by the American Library Association as “the go-to books” on plant-based nutrition. Most recent are Plant-Powered Protein, Becoming Vegan (Comprehensive and Express Edition) and The Kick Diabetes Cookbook, (all with dietitian Brenda Davis RD). Their books are now in 10 languages. Vesanto has taught nutrition at Seattle's Bastyr University and at the University of British Columbia and has been a government consultant for 22 years. She is lead author of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics latest Position Paper on Vegetarian Diets and an internationally known speaker. On this episode we chat about: How a trip to India in the 1970s changed the way Vesanto thinks about food How going plant-based was controversial in the nutrition community in the 90s What protein is, and what it does in the body Is plant-based protein lower quality than animal protein? How much protein we need daily How to eat enough protein without counting things The historical context for associating protein with meat Common (fixable!) reasons you might not be feeling great plant-based How plant-based diets affect iron stores The connection between plant-based diets and longevity How protein needs change as we get older Support the Pod! We couldn't make this podcast happen without the support of our amazing listeners.
