Paige talks with Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, on this week's episode on her road to public service, her belief that “we're here for a bigger purpose,” and how we need to question what we can do for the larger good. Minister Fu shares how pragmatism led to her degrees, and how moving into politics, after being the CEO of PSA when Singapore's port was the largest in the world, was a call to duty. They talk about climate change, rising sea-levels, the impact on food production, and how new waves of diseases will emerge as a result of our actions. They cover the Singapore Green Plan, the 3 Rs, carbon emissions, and the Eco Stewardship Programme for children, before concluding with a thoughtful conversation on what success means to Minister Fu. Paige's favourite quote from Minister Fu: “If you're always afraid of making mistakes, and you're not making mistakes, it means you're keeping it too safe. You're not pushing yourself, you're not really pushing for your company's best interest, or you're not fighting for your rights.” For a better future tomorrow, they share and hope to Pass the Power on to you. Filmmaker Boo Junfeng shares the challenges he faced as director of NDP 2021 (Singapore's National Day Parade) during a pandemic, yet ultimately how he created a celebration that resonated at home, on screens, inspiring all of Singapore. Drawn to film in secondary school, mesmerized by the make-believe of Oscar films, he was encouraged by his parents to take a “well-trodden path”. Junfeng though, “not a motivated student”, did not do well academically, until he found his way to Ngee Ann Polytechnic, where “it was the first time I ever topped my class”. He celebrates the availability of more pathways to express creativity now, and explores how his passion for filmmaking lies in his interest to understand people, their psyche, and the human condition – all evident in his debut film, “Sandcastle” and follow-up “Apprentice”. Wanting to humanize topics and stories, wondering if people will find value in his work, explaining why Singapore filmmakers find “a cocoon in the art house circuit”, and why Passing the Power on PinkDot and LGBTQ is important to him: “For many people, it's just an issue. For me, it's an identity. It is who I am.” As his thoughtful sharing makes us all consider our stories, the ones we tell ourselves and others, he closes with passion, purpose, and peace, “Taking the time to listen tends to be a better use of my time,” says Junfeng, aptly Passing the Power on to you. Known as Singapore's grand dame of Nyonya food, Violet Oon shares with Paige the significance of learning to cook in the 1960s with her aunties, because her career-woman mother did not cook “and there were no videos then!”, and how she proudly represents Singapore's food heritage around the world. Violet discusses her career, as a reporter, then food critic, turned culinary magazine publisher, before opening her first food store at Takashimaya, which failed. Today her famous namesake, Violet Oon Singapore, offers dishes rooted in Singapore's rich history. Hear how as an indulged, only child, Violet was sent to a convent boarding school, since her parents did not want her prepared for a life of luxury, but instead ready for World War III. A proponent of not over-planning, Violet encourages creativity, and says as the world evolves, so must we. You'll love her advice to stop with the selfies, and instead video your grandmother cooking!
