During Utah Clean Energy's annual Party for Clean Power, we recognized two local leaders with our Climate Champion Awards. In this episode, hear the inspiring speeches from the 2023 Climate Champion awardees, Scott Anderson, CEO of Zions Banks, and Reverend Dr. Oscar T. Moses of Calvary Baptist Church. A. Scott AndersonA master of quiet influence, A. Scott Anderson, President and CEO of Zions Bank, stands as an exemplar of leadership in both the financial sector and community service. His distinctive approach has led to tangible and enduring impacts on numerous causes. As a founding signatory of the Utah Climate and Clean Air Compact, Anderson galvanized a new wave of climate leaders in Utah. Through thoughtful engagement, he empowers others to join the movement, propelling Utah toward national leadership in climate action. Further, he and Zions Bank Corporation have led the way by building their Technology Campus to be near net zero and invested in the University of Utah's climate prize.“We all have a role to play in turning the tide on climate change. I'm confident that Utahns can come together to find common-sense solutions to our climate challenges. After all, this is an issue that affects all of us, and I'm proud to be a part of the solution,” states Scott Anderson, President and CEO of Zions Bank. The Reverend Dr. Oscar T. MosesUnder the guidance of Reverend Dr. Oscar T. Moses, Calvary Baptist Church has emerged as a beacon of environmental stewardship. Moses spearheaded the transformation of the church into an energy-efficient, solar-powered sanctuary. Expanding this stewardship, he brought energy-saving solutions to the congregation, enabling families to take meaningful climate action by reducing pollution at home. Through his visionary leadership, Reverend Dr. Oscar T. Moses has not only raised awareness about climate change but also ignited a fire of inspiration and empowerment within the Calvary Baptist Church community and beyond. “I strive to help the congregants of Calvary Baptist Church move beyond hopelessness, to hope and beyond. This couldn't be more vital as we deal with climate change. We cannot leave room in our hearts for blame or complacency. We have to work together to safeguard our planet for us and for the next generation.”
Hello, Climate Champions! In today's episode of the Climate Confident Podcast I had the pleasure of hosting Matt Gray, the co-founder and CEO of Transition Zero, a trailblazer in energy systems modelling. In our conversation, Matt delved into the intricate world of energy systems modelling, a crucial tool for stakeholders and decision-makers in shaping our energy future. He emphasized Transition Zero's mission to democratise this complex tool, making it accessible, auditable, and reproducible. This, Matt believes, is vital for accelerating the transition to a sustainable energy future. We explored the significant challenges in moving towards net zero, particularly the technical and political barriers. Matt highlighted the crucial role of transmission investments in the energy grid and how these investments, or the lack thereof, influence our ability to harness low-cost renewable energies like wind and solar.Another key takeaway from our chat was the importance of data transparency in fostering global collaboration. Matt underlined how Transition Zero's commitment to open data and models aims to bridge the gap between pledges and actions in climate commitments, thereby enhancing global climate action.Matt's insights on the role of transmission in achieving net zero were particularly thought-provoking, revealing how strategic investments can save trillions while facilitating a faster shift to renewable energy sources. We wrapped up with Matt's thoughts on COP28 and his future plans for Transition Zero. For those keen to learn more about their groundbreaking work or get involved, check out the TransitionZero website.Check out the video version of this episode on YouTube.Tune in, get inspired, and let's continue to make strides towards a sustainable future together! Having trained as a physicist, Simon Sharpe decided to join the British civil service back in 2009 because he wanted the opportunity to solve “big problems”. Sharpe has since become something of a climate missionary within the British government, working on climate change at several different departments over the years, from energy to enterprise, and even representing the UK at the UN climate negotiations. Sharpe has now written a book called Five Times Faster, based on the simple premise that if global warming is to be kept below safe levels, then we will have to reduce emissions five times faster in the next decade than we have done in the previous decade. For his policy changes, he chose to develop risk assessment in the climate science space, to shift our economic modelling away from dated techniques to ones more consistent with a diverse and changing economy, and to move climate diplomacy towards getting agreement on action in individual sectors. For his personal change he chose to increase biodiversity in his garden and to take a zero emissions approach to his barbeque.

It's Jane Fonda y'all! Jane stopped by Manny's right before the midterms to talk about this critical election. She knows, as we all know, that we are on the precipice of climate disaster. We are no longer just imagining how the world will look in a disrupted climate; we're seeing and feeling the reality of the climate crisis every single day as we witness and experience wildfires, heat waves, and floods destroying communities. In 2020, the fossil fuel industry poured $139 million into our elections – to politicians of both parties. This money has real consequences. Major solutions are stopped cold, like the Green New Deal, Build Back Better, clean energy investments, and initiatives to end billions in tax subsidies to the fossil fuel industry — all because of politicians backed by Big Oil. It's not too late to change our course. But it won't happen as long as oil, gas, and coal companies maintain their stranglehold on American politics. Earlier this year, she started the Jane Fonda Climate PAC to elect local, state, and federal leaders who will rise to the urgency of this moment and stand up to the fossil fuel industry. The PAC leverages the donations of those who are climate concerned to counter the outsized influence the fossil fuel industry has on our government. Jane wants politicians who support oil and gas to be as afraid for their jobs as we are about the impending climate disaster.About Jane FondaJane Seymour Fonda is a film and television icon, entrepreneur, and activist. Jane has earned two Academy Awards, two British Academy Film Awards, seven Golden Globe Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, the AFI Life Achievement Award, the Golden Lion Honorary Award, the Honorary Palme d'Or, and the Cecil B. DeMille Award. She has starred in dozens of films over 60 years including Barbarella; Klute; The Shoot Horses, Don't They; Coming Home; On Golden Pond; The China Syndrome; 9 to 5; Monster-In-Law; and The Morning After to name only a few. She has been a political activist her entire adult life, involved in multiple anti-war movements, the civil rights movement, in support of the Black Panthers, in the fight for LBGTQ rights, in feminist struggles, and now, in the fight of her life to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. Jane has been targeted and arrested for her activities throughout her life but remains committed to doing everything she can to fight for justice for all and to live joyfully while doing it.

Paige talks with Grace Fu, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment, on this week's episode on her road to public service, her belief that “we're here for a bigger purpose,” and how we need to question what we can do for the larger good. Minister Fu shares how pragmatism led to her degrees, and how moving into politics, after being the CEO of PSA when Singapore's port was the largest in the world, was a call to duty. They talk about climate change, rising sea-levels, the impact on food production, and how new waves of diseases will emerge as a result of our actions. They cover the Singapore Green Plan, the 3 Rs, carbon emissions, and the Eco Stewardship Programme for children, before concluding with a thoughtful conversation on what success means to Minister Fu. Paige's favourite quote from Minister Fu: “If you're always afraid of making mistakes, and you're not making mistakes, it means you're keeping it too safe. You're not pushing yourself, you're not really pushing for your company's best interest, or you're not fighting for your rights.” For a better future tomorrow, they share and hope to Pass the Power on to you.
