How comfortable are we when other people's stories of us don't align with how we want to be perceived? In my experience, it's a common human experience to feel the need to have some control over the story of who we are. For many TCKs, it's aligned to our very social survival... Hosted on Acast. Strategic Storytelling

Content creation is one of the most important activities of a business owner, especially for online marketing.  As a prolific writer myself, I've found that anyone who writes a lot will sooner or later experience a challenge: how can I find ideas for my next article?  That article might appear as a blog post or be recorded as a podcast episode. It's the same problem I had when I was first doing comedy. You write your own material and it's tough. For comedy, I was advised to "get mad and get even." Something that annoys you can be transformed into knock-it-out-of-the-park material. I give a couple of examples (carefully chosen for a G-rated podcast) in this episode. It works equally well for business owners, especially if you're an Educator archetype. Role models benefit from sharing personal stories or even personal anecdotes. Educators get clients when they create aha moments that lead to new ways of learning. Still, all archetypes can use stories to make a point and this method works well when your well of ideas feels very, very dry. When you read articles by others in your field, you'll usually find some that make you mad. They're sharing ideas that could best be described as "cockamanie" if you want to be polite. Sometimes they're just ridiculous and unusable. Sometimes they leave out a key point, such as promising you'll earn thousands of dollars. from a single article or ebook. Now you can turn your annoyance into an article, providing useful and often novel information. You've got a great article - even a memorable one. Your listeners gain from the advice. And you're back to being in agood mood.  RESOURCES: FREE: Archetypes for branding your small business  - click here. My podcast featuring Cindy Bidar (a Role Model archetype) will air in September.  Strategic Intensive consultation - available beginning September 20, 2023.

My guest is David Richman, an author, motivational speaker, trainer, and consultant.  Actually, David refers to himself as a transformation expert. He shares the many tremendous personal transformations he has made in his life, and I know that you too will agree that he is indeed an expert in transforming oneself into the best possible person that you can be.  David went from being trauma and stress burdened, 50 pounds overweight and a smoker, to a 20-time Ironman finisher, having completed hundreds of endurance events, 100+ mile runs and a 4,700-mile ride that lasted 45 days.  What an amazing inspiration he is!  Then, after his sister developed a brain tumor and died at a young age, David began to look more at the lives of people who had cancer and as well as their caregivers and physicians.  His award-winning book was born titled Cycle of Lives – 15 People's Stories, 5000 Miles and a Journey through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer.  In it, he seeks to give you a view of the human experience of cancer from many different aspects.  All proceeds from book sales go to cancer organizations supported by the 15 people featured in his book.Book: Cycle of Lives – 15 People's Stories, 5000 Miles and a Journey through the Emotional Chaos of CancerWebsite: https://david-richman.com/ www.cycleoflives.orgSocial media:Instagram: www.instagram.com/davidrichman_cycleoflivesFacebook: www.facebook.com/cycleoflives

What's the value?
"Hearing people's stories and helping them get justice" - Lauren Conlin

What's the value?

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 9, 2023 48:37

Lauren is a NYC based entertainment journalist and host, who knew she wanted to write about gossip and entertainment for much of her life. She loves to investigate and write about Hollywood crime and has been featured on Fox News, Sky News Arabia, Elle, Page Six, and many other places. As she stated with her value, she has a deep passion for sharing people's stories and has committed herself to this world. I found this conversation really interesting because in many ways the world of deep philosophical thinking seems to be very different than the world of entertainment news and gossip. I was very conscious of that during the discussion and wanted to be really careful not to come off judgmental or critical, while at the same time trying to explore Lauren's values/work to understand it better. It's funny because if you think about it, I am also trying to hear people's stories and share them with the with the world, we just have different approaches to it. It was cool to hear how she got into this career, the challenges she faces, and the dreams she has. We talked about some of the negative connotations that can be attached to gossip and entertainment, which Lauren acknowledged can be very real. As she said at one point, it is a weird phenomena to get a huge dopamine hit when your post on Tik Tok gets over a million views but at the same time knowing how bad it is for you. We talked about that tension of needing the external validation while also trying to maintain a healthy ego and perspective. Maybe the most interesting part of the discussion was about the role bullying plays in her profession. Lauren talked about the degree of bullying she experiences for the views she shares (as you'll hear she also holds some strong political/social views as well). So we talked about the level of trust you have to have in your own judgement to report stories that can have such a negative impact on people's lives. Also the circular nature of bullying, where people may feel like she is bullying or mistreating them, so they return by bullying and mistreating her. As I said it can feel far removed from philosophy, but I actually think there is a ton to learn about human nature in the work Lauren does. A big thanks for her being on and sharing her story.

From documentary photography on the other side of the world to high fives with President Obama, mountain biking adventures to working with the press Garrett has chased down the stories of humans all over the world. His eye for photography shaped early on influenced by a love for culture and an education from one of the world's most prestigious photography schools Garrett's story comes alive as he starts to talk about finding his place in the world. We asked Garrett to be a part of this podcast because of just a sliver of his story. Leaving the Washington DC area to move closer to a place where his passion for mountain biking and the outdoors could be a more prominent part of his family's life but what we got out of him was more than Jared and I could possibly have expected. A story of intentionality, willingness to learn, humility, and so many amazing successes along the way. The simple fact is that Garrett Hubbard as a photographer, a film maker, a director, a father, and a husband is a man that we can all learn from as he so calmly describes his craft through the vein of it's value to sharing the stories of other people - to other people. I walked away from this interview with a keen appreciation for the talent and the accomplishments of the people who quietly drive our industry forward always more focused on doing a good job than getting praise for it. Perhaps what strikes the hardest about this interview with Garrett is his willingness to give credit to the people from all over the country that have simply opened doors for him to walk through. Community is a critical element to success and Garrett Hubbard is absolutely willing to share his success with the people who have contributed to it. https://www.garretthubbard.com/ PhotoCo and the Photographic Collective Podcast are productions of The Photographic Collective LLC ©2023. A staggering statistic of today's medical care is that in the average doctor-patient interaction, the doctor interrupts the patient within 18 seconds. This quick interruption offers very little time for a connection to be formed between a doctor and their patient. This transactional approach hinders the clinicians' ability to provide solutions to patients who may not feel as if they were unable to express their true needs. To discover the steps being taken to raise the bedside manner bar, Positive Psychology Podcast Host Lisa Cypers Kamen speaks with two authors about medical journeys, kinder doctors, and resilient patients. Dr. Adam Stern is a psychiatrist and author of Committed: Dispatches from a Psychiatrist in Training . He is back on the program to share how he teaches the softer side of medicine to doctors in training and the therapeutic power of listening. David Richman is an author, public speaker, and endurance athlete who interviewed hundreds of people about their medical journey and the impact of cancer on their lives. His book, Cycle of Lives: 15 People's Stories, 5,000 Miles, and a Journey Through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer shares those stories and offers insights into how caregivers can find relief from the pressure of compassion.

After working in a variety of industries–including launching two start-ups–David Richman entered the financial industry as an advisor. Several years in, he found that his interests were more in managing people and businesses than in managing money. Over the next 15 years, he managed ever-larger businesses for the same Wall Street firm. Among other pursuits, David now works with a nationally-recognized financial services firm committed to keeping the advisor in the forefront. Over the last 10 years, David has completed over 50 triathlons, including 15 Ironman-distance triathlons (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run), more than 50 runs longer than marathon distance, including several 24-hour runs, running 85 miles in Mexico in the heat of the summer, running 104 miles straight from Santa Barbara to Manhattan Beach, and most recently biking 4,700-miles in just six weeks as he met with the participants of his upcoming book exploring the emotional side of cancer. As a former sedentary, over-weight, smoker, David knew that he needed to focus not on what others wanted out of him, but on what he wanted out of life. Through lessons learned in business and sport, David introduces the concept of the “middle of the pack” and discusses how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. He applies this concept to life and business and adds value to the people he works with coming from the perspective of the “middle of the pack.” David was born in Miami and raised mostly in the Los Angeles area. He and his wife split their time between homes in Southern California and Southern Nevada. He has worked in real estate, lending, construction, started both an animation company and a skin care company, and then went into financial services. He has college-aged twins who are as aspirational as their father. After losing his sister to brain cancer, David has organized a yearly fundraiser in her memory, the most recent being the impetus for his upcoming book, Cycle of Lives – 15 People's Stories, 5,000 Miles, and a Journey Through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer. https://david-richman.com/

If confronted with cancer, how would you feel? What would you say to the people you love? What would they say to you? No two people have the same answers to these questions, a lesson I learned well during a solo six-week, 5,000-mile cross-country bike ride I called Cycle of Lives. The trip started as a fundraiser in honor of my sister, June, who died of brain cancer. But long before I even set out on my endurance ride from L.A. to Florida to N.Y., I exhaustively interviewed fifteen people across the country whose lives had also been irrevocably changed by cancer—either as patients, survivors, loved ones, or caregivers. Hearing their moving stories, which were influenced by many different forms of past and present trauma, transformed my cycling odyssey into a journey of emotional self-discovery as I relived the chaos and emotional upheaval of cancer through them: from the man who found true love after losing his soulmate to cancer, to the elite athlete who had to reckon with his all-star body finally letting him down, to the medical oncologist who cares as much about her patients as she cares for them. Whether you or someone you care about is going through cancer or some other major trauma, I hope this thought-provoking collection of astonishing stories can help you, too. ABOUT DAVID RICHMAN An entrepreneur, author, public speaker, athlete, and philanthropist, David Richman uses the lessons learned in his life to enrich and inspire others. As a former sedentary, over-weight, smoker, David knew that he needed to focus not on what others wanted out of him, but on what he wanted out of life. With his first book, Winning in the Middle of the Pack, David discussed how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. Over the last 15 years, David has completed over 50 triathlons, including 15 Ironman-distance triathlons (2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, 26.2-mile run), more than 50 runs longer than marathon distance, including several 24-hour runs, running 85 miles in Mexico in the heat of the summer, and ran four consecutive marathons (104 miles) from Santa Barbara to Manhattan Beach. In Cancer: The Queen of Emotional Chaos â Fifteen Remarkable Stories, One 5,000-Mile Bike Ride, David introduces us to fifteen unique, evocative, relatable people, whose diverse and wide-ranging experiences shed light on the human experience and emotions related to the trauma of cancer. Told through personal, insightful narratives, these stories delve deep into the psyche so that we can all learn how to better navigate the emotions that accompany intense trauma. David was born in Miami and has since been a Southern California resident. He has twins in college and a wife who are as aspirational and driven as their father.

Women are still changing the way we're changing the world. In season 2, episode 2 of the Just for a Change podcast we tackle an important topic - empathic advocacy. The idea of a single life with multiple narratives running in parallel, is an intriguing one. It throws us off, and can perhaps even cause some discomfort. Who deserves our time and attention? How do we advocate for people on the margins? What is empathic advocacy and how does it affect the work we do in the area of systems change? What role does stigma play in reducing people's stories to a single narrative when really they are more complex. In this episode's feature story podcast host, Kentse Radebe, hosts a conversation with Duduzile Dlamini from SWEAT - an organisation that advocates for the rights of sex workers in South Africa and Zeenat Hendricks from Rape Crisis. Rape Crisis is a feminist organisation that works towards achieving women's rights by offering counselling, education and training, advocacy and community mobilisation. How does empathic advocacy work in these spaces? Why is this work so important and how are we moving towards making the world a more just place - especially for women. In the positive outlook segment Simnikiwe Xanga chats with Velna - a mentor mother from mothers2mothers to hear about the innovative work they are doing by employing women to help other women and their families on the journey to good health. As human beings, we all have different interests, paths, and stories, but the one thing that binds us all is our emotions. The problem is, most of us struggle to open up when those emotions are tied to trauma.    How can we move past the collective mental block that stops us from having more meaningful conversations with our loved ones? How can we foster more heart-centered interactions, so we can learn from our pain, instead of keeping it all in?   In this episode, the author of Cycle of Lives, David Richman shares the biggest lessons he learned while documenting the lives of 15 people affected by cancer.    Three Curiosity-Driven Takeaways    How to get better at having the hard conversations It's easy to express our emotions when we're joyful: how can we get better at expressing our trauma?    Why does hearing about others' trauma assists us How does understanding where someone's trauma comes from make a positive impact on our lives?    How to break free from our fear of death The fear of our mortality holds us back from so many of the things we want to do. How can we stop letting fear stop us?  Guest Bio-    David Richman is a businessman, public speaker, philanthropist, and the author of Cycle of Lives: 15 People's Stories, 5000 miles, and a Journey Through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer, the proceeds of which are donated to partnered charities. A transformational expert, David has organized a yearly cancer fundraiser since losing his sister to the disease, and today he is passionate about connecting with those who have been affected by cancer.    To find out more, go to: https://david-richman.com/  https://david-richman.com/cycle-of-lives/  https://www.facebook.com/cycleoflives https://www.instagram.com/davidrichman_cycleoflives/?hl=en

— There are many definitive truths involved in cancer research, care, and treatment. After testing, we might know that specific drugs work or don't work in certain instances. We may even know what the predicted outcome might be when comparing one surgical approach to another, but doctors do not have the luxury of working in absolutes. Absolutes may offer more peace than unknowns, but there are not many absolutes in cancer. Instead, there is a stream of endless unknowns, creating a chaotic and unpredictable environment for the feelings of anyone faced with a challenge like cancer. David Richman experience has shown that cancer usually crashes into one's life with a sort of primitive, metal-to-flesh force, and people don't often jump right into unpacking the vast array of emotion the experience evokes for them— sometimes they never do. Since David first recognized the common thread binding people touched by cancer—the tendency not to examine, discuss, or even acknowledge the emotional side of their experience—his goal has been to shine a light on the things we've all kept buried, in the hopes that people might better understand what they and their loved ones went through. Valeria Teles interviews David Richman — the author of “Cycle of Lives: 15 People's Stories, 5,000 Miles, and a Journey Through the Emotional Chaos of Cancer.”  David is an author, public speaker, philanthropist, and endurance athlete whose mission is to form more meaningful human connections through storytelling. In his first book, Winning in the Middle of the Pack, he discussed how to get more out of ourselves than ever imagined. With Cycle of Lives, David shares the interconnected stories of people overcoming trauma and delves deeply into their emotional journeys with cancer. He continues to do Ironman triathlons and a wide range of endurance athletic events, having recently completed a solo 4,700-mile bike ride. He is married, lives in Southern Nevada, and has twins who are in college. To learn more about David Richman and his work, please visit: https://www.david-richman.com/     — This podcast is a quest for well-being, a quest for a meaningful life through the exploration of fundamental truths, enlightening ideas, insights on physical, mental, and spiritual health. The inspiration is Love. The aspiration is to awaken new ways of thinking that can lead us to a new way of being, being well.

Lisa LaFlamme is a powerhouse journalist who has been the Chief News Anchor and Senior Editor of CTV National News since 2016. Lisa was also appointed to the Order of Ontario, the province's highest honor, and won the Radio-Television News Directors Association President's Award in 2016. Today, Lisa steps away from the TV and into the Inner Circle to talk with Carrie about the pivotal moments she has experienced throughout her decades of reporting on the airwaves and into Canada's homes. Lisa also shares how she handles the pressures of delivering a national newscast and her takeaways from covering everything from the aftermath of 9/11 to Hurricane Katrina and the war in Afghanistan. What You'll Hear In This Episode: Lisa was born in Ontario as the middle child, and her family was very encouraging. She credits their honesty and support to her current mindset that there is nothing she can't do.  Lisa always wanted to be a journalist and had a desire deep inside her to explore what makes us human and share the stories with others.  How Lisa ended up living in the best neighborhood in Ottawa while a young student, and then worked her way up from the night shift on the radio to doing a TV/radio hybrid job 7 days a week. The amazing prediction from a psychic that Lisa experienced, which led to her having an even deeper appreciation when she sees all the flags of the world.  More about Lisa's time as a National Consumer Affairs correspondent, and how she reported a new scam to the country every week. The pivotal, and often scary, moments that Lisa remembers about working in war zones like Baghdad and Afghanistan, and seeing devastating environments like the aftermath of 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina. How it felt when Lisa earned her spot as the first female alone on a National news desk. What's Lisa sees in the future of journalism, and what we need to know to keep the human aspect alive when delivering often negative news.  Quotes:  “Journalism is the opioid of the restless.”  “I have to stand up to it (fear).”  “Being a woman has never slowed me down.”  “Find a balance.”  “Media literacy is as important as math.”  Mentioned: @LisaLaFlammeCTV CTV News Chateau Laurier National Arts Centre Lloyd Robertson Journalists for Human Rights Journey Into the Inner Circle:  Carrie Doll  @CarrieADoll – Twitter @carriedollconsulting – Instagram  Carrie Doll – Facebook  Please rate, review and follow the podcast! I have yet to meet Kelly McEvers in real life, but I soon discovered both by listening to her podcast, Embedded and having a conversation with her that she's badass. Kelly McEvers is co-host of All Things Considered, NPR's award-winning afternoon newsmagazine. She hosts the program from NPR West in Culver City, California, with co-hosts Robert Siegel, Audie Cornish, and Ari Shapiro in NPR's Washington, D.C. headquarters.  McEvers was previously a national correspondent based at NPR West. Prior to that, McEvers ran NPR's Beirut bureau, where she earned a George Foster Peabody award, an Alfred I. DuPont-Columbia award, a Gracie award, and an Overseas Press Club mention for her 2012 coverage of the Syrian conflict. She recently made a radio documentary about being a war correspondent with renowned radio producer Jay Allison of Transom.org. In 2011, she traveled undercover to follow Arab uprisings in places where brutal crackdowns followed the early euphoria of protests. She has been tear-gassed in Bahrain; she has spent a night in a tent city with a Yemeni woman who would later share the Nobel Peace Prize; and she spent weeks inside Syria with anti-government rebels known as the Free Syrian Army. In Iraq, she covered the final withdrawal of U.S. troops and the political chaos that gripped the country afterward. Before arriving in Iraq in 2010, McEvers was one of the first Western correspondents to be based, full-time, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2008 and 2009, McEvers was part of a team that produced the award-winning "Working" series for American Public Media's business and finance show, Marketplace. She profiled a war fixer in Beirut, a smuggler in Dubai, a sex-worker in Baku, a pirate in the Strait of Malacca and a marriage broker in Vietnam. She previously covered the former Soviet Union and Southeast Asia as a freelancer for NPR and other outlets. She started her journalism career in 1997 at the Chicago Tribune, where she worked as a metro reporter and documented the lives of female gang members for the Sunday magazine. Her writing also has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, Esquire, Foreign Policy, The New Republic, The New York Review of Books, The Washington Monthly, Slate and the San Francisco Chronicle. Her work has aired on This American Life, The World, and the BBC. She's taught radio and journalism in the U.S. and abroad. McEvers also hosts Embedded, which takes a story from the news and goes deep. What does it feel like for a father in El Salvador to lie to his daughter about the bodies he saw in the street that day? What does it feel like for a nurse from rural Indiana to shoot up a powerful prescription opioid? Embedded (EMBD) takes you to where it's all happening. She lives with her family in California, where she's still very bad at surfing.   To Connect with Kelly: * Twitter: @kellymcevers
