What if humans aren't actually from Earth? Sounds wild, right? Some scientists and theorists believe we may have originated somewhere else—maybe even another planet! From the idea that we came here on comets to theories about ancient aliens planting life, there are plenty of mind-blowing possibilities. Some say our bodies aren't well-adapted to Earth's conditions, like back pain and sunburns, as if we were designed for a different world. Whether it's Mars, another galaxy, or even a simulation, these theories will definitely make you question everything. Ready to explore the possibilities and rethink where we really came from? As we begin to close out 2024 and look ahead to 2025, I couldn't resist the urge to revisit some of my favorite guests from the last couple of months. While I'm grateful for everyone we've had on the show, and all the support we continue to receive from the industrial cybersecurity community, I felt these comments were worth another listen, with special focus being given to a handful of the most critical issues confronting our OT environments. First, we hear from Jon Taylor (1:16) at Versa, as he discusses a unique approach to patching and secure-by-design strategies that involve the development embedded micro-segmentation approaches. Next, we'll hear from Cloud Range's Tom Marsland (11:18) as he discusses the continued challenges presented by data silos, and innovative ways to address the shortage of cybersecurity specialists. Then we'll turn to Baker Tilly's Jeff Krull (19:42) as he reports on ransomware gangs and their combination of new and old tactics. And we'll finish up with cybersecurity researcher Jeremiah Fowler (29:40) as he discusses some of the ongoing challenges about addressing persistent vulnerabilities. As a go-to podcast for our listeners, we want to help you align your brand with our expertise. An apology is a starting point, a basic human relationship skill, and an essential component of healing. In this twice-monthly Rocking Relationships in Recovery webinar, host Jon Taylor, Utah Therapist (CSAT), discusses how and why to effectively apologize. TAKEAWAYS: [3:08] Executed well, an apology can be a powerful change for a person issuing the apology. [4:06] John shares the first big fight he and his spouse had in their marriage. [6:41] Saying ‘I'm sorry' is the first step, then asking ‘How can I help?'” [12:25] If your apology is coupled with resentment, you're not doing it right. [15:30] Turn on your thinking brain and consider what you could do differently. [18:30] Offer solutions to your partner that can correct the hurt. [22:05] The danger of a forced apology. [24:08] The non-apology apology is thinly veiled manipulation. [27:27] How can I proceed when the people I've hurt refuse to talk to me? [33:14] How does self-sabotage show up for both addicts and betrayed partners? [37:40] Self activation and authentication can open us up to hurt as well as clarity. [38:50] How can I react to my addict spouse if he refuses support? Otherwise you're going to hollow out the word and make it the word that signals the start of a fight, not the start of repair.” “Apology, executed well, can be a powerful change for the person issuing the apology.” “I ended up listening and paying attention, and that's the power of saying ‘I'm sorry'.” “Be careful not to hold your ‘I'm sorry' hostage or make it conditional. If you're doing that, then you are the problem.” “We're misusing an apology when we expect it to be a quick fix.” “We never know where our person's breaking point is and we can't be the one to define that.”
For this episode, instead of tapping into one source for feedback and updates on industrial cybersecurity, we're going to look at some of the key insights previous guests have offered on the evolving threat landscape – from increased risks emanating from technological integrations and an uptick in automation, to the more traditional adversaries responsible for next-generation malware, ransomware and phishing schemes. To kick things off, we'll hear from:Tom Marsland, VP of Technology for Cloud Range as he discusses threats to our infrastructure and state-sponsored groups from China.(3:31) He'll be followed by Cyberhoot's Craig Taylor as he updates us on phishing schemes.(5:45) And then we'll hear from Jon Taylor at Versa Networks as he talks about strategies bad actors are taking in targeting legacy industrial control systems. While many of those topics are already at the top of our list of concerns, there are also a number of evolving threats that warrant an uptick in resources – from both a financial and skillset development perspective. We'll dive into comments from:(9:26) Corsha's Anusha Iyer as she discusses supply chain and dwelling attacks.(15:33) Venafi's Kevin Bocek and his take on embedded software vulnerabilities and how hackers are taking advantage of them.(22:18) Baker Tilly's Jeff Krull offers an update on the evolving complexity of ransomware groups and how they're targeting the industrial sector.(25:20) And finally, let's wrap up with one of my favorite guests we've ever had on Security Breach – researcher Jeremiah Fowler. He'll offer some insight on a number of unique, embedded threats and some of the lessons he's learned in tangling with state-sponsored Russian hackers. As a go-to podcast for our listeners, we want to help you align your brand with our expertise. Jon Taylor is an interdisciplinary scientist dedicated to the subject of anomalous phenomena related to cognition. He was born in Wakefield, England, and graduated from the University of Cambridge with an MA in Natural Sciences. He began his career in research and marketing within the field of scientific instruments. He then switched to consumer marketing and moved to Spain in 1976 to become International Marketing Director for wine producer Williams & Humbert Ltd., Jerez de la Frontera.Later, he joined the oil industry, and after engagement on contracts in Britain, Italy and Spain, he was transferred to the Middle East, where he served as Materials & Purchasing Manager for the National Drilling Company, Abu Dhabi.Taylor has always been intrigued by psychic phenomena, and when he returned to Spain in 1993, he started a full-time investigation of the physical and biological principles underlying precognition and intuition. His research continued for more than 25 years, during which he published in peer-reviewed academic journals and lectured to specialist audiences, as well as to the general public, in Britain and Europe.Taylor presented his theory of ESP in a lecture at the 56th Annual Convention of the Parapsychological Association (PA), held in Rome, Italy, in August 2013, and he described the theory in a paper titled “The Nature of Precognition” published in the Journal of Parapsychology, March 2014.He then applied his theory to explain intuition, and presented his research at the PA Convention in Paris, July 2019. He was also invited to participate in a workshop organized by the Institut Métapsychique International, in which 30 scientists from all over the world examined the theoretical aspects of psychic phenomena. The workshop was in celebration of the Centenary of the IMI. Taylor is a professional member of the PA, and member of several other organizations including the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Society for Scientific Exploration.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-x-zone-radio-tv-show--1078348/support.
Send us a textSo, my daughters like to give me a hard time about growing old. Said another way, I'm a legacy asset - just like most of the devices many of you observe, manage and secure every day. Your machines are still in place because they work. While the technology around these assets has evolved, their core functionality and value to the production process has remained constant. But as sensors, network connections and access parameters have been upgraded to improve output, these highly prized pieces of equipment are showing their age from a cybersecurity perspective. The challenges they present are reinforced with findings from Fortinet's 2024 State of Operational Technology and Cybersecurity Report. A couple of key takeaways include findings that show nearly one-third of respondents experiencing six or more intrusions in the last year. Additionally, fewer respondents claimed 100 percent OT system visibility – with that number decreasing from 10 to five percent. On the bright side, we're getting better in some areas, with 20 percent of organizations establishing visibility and implementing segmentation, up from only 13 percent the previous year.Joining us to discuss these and other trends is Jon Taylor, Director and Principal of Security with Versa Networks, a leading provider of digital transformation and edge security solutions. Watch/listen as he discusses:Why the Purdue model might re outdated and preventing many from using new strategies like SASE.Why he believes visibility is security - "you have to see it do defend it," and how AI could be the solution. The need for OT to look at vulnerabilities from a network or architecture perspective, not by device or connection point. How air gapping help feed the division between IT and OT.The weaponizing of OT networks stems from the lack of an adaptive network strategy fed by archaic infrastructure.Instead of Security by Design, we need to implement Patching by Design. Why the industrial sector needs to be more vocal about the need for embedded security and embedded micro-segmentation.How state-sponsored hackers are helping elevate the industrial sector's response and prioritization of cybersecurity. To catch up on past episodes, you can go to Manufacturing.net, IEN.com or MBTmag.com. Fancy Scientist: A Material Girl Living in a Sustainable World
Working in the conservation field innately involves loss from which is often accompanied by feelings of sadness, grief, anger, and even depression. The whole point of our field is to save species and ecosystems that are facing, often massive, declines and even extinction! As conservationists, we are compelled to help out because we love nature, often stemming from personal experiences and connections. This love is so great that we are often willing to dedicate our precious time, money, and energy towards this cause. But we currently live in a time where we are going through a massive extinction event, and unlike others, it's all because of us - human beings. We are constantly being bombarded with negative news of our changing planet: deforestation, climate change, pollution, wildfires, drought, and the list goes on and on! No wonder this takes a toll on us. For a long time, conservation organizations have used “doom and gloom” to activate people to change and to some extent have been successful, but it can also cause people to turn away and tune out with feelings of helplessness or apathy. And for those of us working, it can simply be draining and just downright depressing to see these images and read these stories over and over again! One of my favorite things to ask when facing a seemingly insurmountable problem is to ask “what can I do?” So what can we do? Well, we can turn to optimism in conservation. It can make us feel better and work as a catalyst for change. I have long been saying this so when I saw the organization Conservation Optimism, I was hopeful and relieved to see others who felt the same way. Conservation Optimism is a movement that emerged from Oxford University in 2017, born out of the desire to shift the narrative in conservation from despair to hope. It came about as a response to the overwhelming "doom and gloom" messaging often associated with environmental crises, which can lead to feelings of helplessness and inaction. The movement aims to bridge the gap BETWEEN conservation science and public engagement by providing a message of hope and agency. It's not about downplaying the severity of our environmental challenges, but rather about empowering people to take action.I have been following Conservation Optimism for a long time as I have been drawn to their impactful work. Given the challenges we face in our field, I knew that doing this interview with their director, Jon Taylor, would be an invaluable resource for our community!Jon Taylor is a seasoned wildlife conservation leader with over 30 years of experience working on conservation and sustainable development projects across Europe, Africa, Asia, and South America. His career has spanned a variety of roles, including managing projects focused on climate change at WWF, tigers and elephants at the Zoological Society of London, and coral reefs and cetaceans in different parts of the world. Before joining Conservation Optimism in 2024, Jon served as the Managing Director at Save the Rhino International. With a deep passion for wildlife sparked in childhood, Jon has become an expert in conceptualizing and leading conservation initiatives, and he's dedicated to guiding the next generation of conservationists. Despite his extensive experience, he remains in awe of the natural world and continues to be motivated by its beauty and wonder.Conservation Optimism aims to bridge this gap by providing a message of hope and agency. It's not about downplaying the severity of our environmental challenges, but rather about empowering people to take action. It's clear that while the challenges in conservation are significant, there's ample reason for hope. Jon's passion for his work and his belief in our collective ability to make a difference is truly inspiring. His message reminds us that every action counts and that we're all part of a global community working towards a healthier planet. Despite the challenges we face, he believes in our collective ability to address environmental issues. In our conversation, Jon emphasizes the need to articulate the value of nature in ways that resonate with people emotionally, not just intellectually. He points out that while ecosystem services are important, we also need to tap into the spiritual, cultural, and emotional connections people have with nature. This approach can help make conservation efforts more relatable and meaningful to a broader audience. For those aspiring to work in conservation, Jon's career journey offers valuable lessons. He stressed the importance of perseverance and curiosity, sharing how his path took him from a poor part of North London to working on projects across Africa and Asia, and eventually to his current role at Oxford. In this episode, we discussed:The concept of Conservation Optimism and its importance in the fieldEffective messaging strategies for conservation communicationNavigating a career in conservation and the diverse skills neededDealing with eco-anxiety and finding personal sources of hopeThe importance of articulating the value of nature beyond just ecosystem servicesJon's experiences working with various species and organizations such as the World Wildlife Fund and Save the Rhino InternationalThe global impact of Conservation Optimism and its future goalsWhat you can do to help conservation and relieve eco-anxietyI'm Dr. Stephanie Manka (formerly Schuttler), a wildlife biologist of nearly 20 yrs with 20+ peer-reviewed scientific publications, author of the book Getting a Job in Wildlife Biology: What It's Like and What You Need to Know (https://www.amazon.com/Getting-Job-Wildlife-Biology-What/dp/B08JDYXS4G/) and founder of Fancy Scientist. Discover How Developmental Trauma Hinders Adult Attachment It's a universal experience to grapple with identity formation in childhood, especially when parents exert significant control over our lives. This podcast, featuring guest Jon Taylor, offers a wealth of expert knowledge on developmental trauma. Gain valuable insights into how early life experiences can shape relationship dynamics as we mature. As we strive to create healthy, intimate adult relationships, we need to make sure that we address barriers such as developmental trauma. In this week's podcast, we explore how to address developmental trauma by creating boundaries in relationships with parents or other family members. Learn how to address these challenging issues to create intimate relationships now. One Form of Developmental Trauma Developmental trauma can occur when a child grows up in an environment where their parents or caregivers exhibit behaviors of ownership towards them. This sense of ownership can manifest in controlling, possessive, and manipulative behaviors that can have a lasting impact on the child's emotional and psychological development. Additional Topics Discussed: Mother Enmeshed Men Growing up in an enmeshed relationship with a mother can have several impacts on a man's development. Firstly, these men may struggle with autonomy and forming healthy boundaries in relationships. They may have difficulty asserting their own needs and desires, often prioritizing their mother's wishes over their own. Additionally, mother-enmeshed men may have challenges forming and maintaining healthy intimate relationships. Their dependence on their mothers for emotional support and validation can interfere with their ability to connect with a partner on a deeper level. In this episode of Dads Who Try Tommy and Nate, are joined by fellow father Jon Taylor Sweet: "I am Wedding, Commercial, and Lifestyle Photographer here in the greater Seattle area! I love life, love coffee, and love to celebrate moments with the finest people. Married to my beautiful wife Caryn who makes every day a better day! We made a beautiful child together and her name is Maeve! I started taking photos on my iPhone in 2012 using Instagram as the vessel to share my work. After a couple years of shooting on my iPhone a friend gifted me a camera so I could jump into photography as a career. Was truly blessed to have people in my life that believed in me. With Instagram being a perfect platform to connect with people all over the world I began to realize how great the photo world really is. Being inspired to shoot weddings, shoot lifestyle content that provoked creativity, and to be in spaces in the commercial world that are uncomfortable(not a mountain in sight to help create "the bangerz"). In the last few years I have been fortunate enough to be apart of so many couples proposals, weddings, and even capturing photos to share that they are having a baby. I have been able to shoot album covers for friends which was a brand new experience. I have had the chance to shoot for massive marketing campaigns for companies that I never thought I would have had the chance to work with. More importantly photography has brought life long friendships with everlasting memories that I will be eternally grateful for. Capturing moments is something that I cherish and am so thankful for every opportunity. God is good! All the time! " Check out his work at jontaylorsweet.com

Two-time Academy Award winning director Guillermo del Toro and his co-director Mark Gustafson join us to discuss their latest work — appropriately titled — “Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio.” Despite being stop-motion animation, the film features a rich sound design and complex mix. One which the directors had to fight for.“Mark [Gustafson] and I had to fight for the time that we needed on the mix board originally, because [for an] animated movie, they gave us a number of weeks. And we said, ‘no, we need more.' Scott and I knew that our timing generally takes a little longer. But I think that we ended up understanding that we needed as many passes as a live-action movie — a big one — to reach simplicity. Which is very, very, very at odds. To be simple, we needed to elaborate the mix and make sure we were not mixing something superficial.”— Guillermo del Toro, Director, “Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio”Joining the discussion is sound supervisor Scott Gershin, along with re-recording mixers Frank A. Montaño and Jon Taylor, the latter of whom you may remember from our episode on BARDO from earlier this week. He breaks down the history of CECL, how to use data to comply with the requirement, and talks about his professional data journey in the CU Movement. Michael has worked in the Credit Union space for 32 years, most notably with the CUSO, CUDL, and is now the owner of Creative Market Resource Group, INC (CRMG Solutions) and CUBI.PRO, helping Credit Unions with data and business intelligence, among many other things. Is building this “Ark”-a-techture (see what we did there) going to help stave off the impending financial flood, or will the funds required pull smaller CU's further under the surface?
