Scripture: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight” – Proverbs 3:5-6Devotional Thought:Taking risks can be scary. Fear often holds us back, whether it's starting a new job, pursuing a dream, or stepping into an unknown situation. But faith calls us to trust God beyond our comfort zone.Application to Sports and Life:God often asks us to take steps of faith without seeing the whole picture. We may never move if we wait until we feel entirely ready or until every detail is certain. But when we trust God fully, He directs our steps and turns our risks into testimonies.Challenge: Find some area to take calculated risk that uses wisdom.
We get overwhelmed by all of the options, social media posts, supplements and more. This year I want you to change your mindset and change your habits, one small choice at a time. More of the good stuff, and less of the bad. Little by little. Over and over again. Challenge: Find one or two choices that you can focus on this week, to just be better than you were yesterday. Resources: Prayer. Rest. Boundaries. Movement.

Inspired by Christ's love, HopeChest serves vulnerable children living in poverty around the world, but that's not where they stop. They foster real partnerships between communities, placing a huge emphasis on building relationships and two-way transformation. Their approach lines up with our mission at Red Letter to go out and serve, to be generous, and to share the love of Jesus in real, practical, tangible ways. They get into a community, establish a multi-year partnership, and then build up local leaders in the areas they work with. They develop community plans with clear exit strategies, focusing on empowerment of the local people, not a forever dependence on those of us who want to help. It truly is the “helping without hurting” model that I know as a pastor I looked for a long time in my global mission work. Plus, their transparency is impressive. So, church leaders, pastors, if you've been wondering what to do globally, this is the organization for you to check out. NOTES: Sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth. Sing to the LORD, praise his name; proclaim his salvation day after day. Psalm 96:1–2 (NIV) Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. Psalm 47:6 (NIV) About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everyone's chains came loose. The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. But Paul shouted, “Don't harm yourself! We are all here!” Acts 16:26-28 (NIV) HOW DO WE DEVELOP A HEART THAT SINGS? 1. REMIND YOURSELF OF WHAT GOD HAS DONE. Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me. Psalm 103:2 (NLT) 2. REMIND YOURSELF WHO GOD IS. Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! Philippians 4:4 (NIV) BOTTOM LINE: There is STRENGTH in a SONG. THE CHALLENGE: Find your SONG.

Beltane (pronounced be-yel-teh-neh) is the festival of fertility and rebirth, but is different from Ostara due to the fact that it occurs when Spring is in full effect and the subtly of birth becomes evident. This time of the year is when it feels easier to connect to your sexual energy more easily, which has to do with the fact that nature is reproducing and growing all around. In this episode, we look at the sexual and historical connections with Beltane and how you can celebrate this season of fertility in a family centered way. Dancing around fires and being more intone with your body is a great way to shift off your winter blues during this Spring thinning of the veil. If you have been curious to learn more about May poles and ways to be more in tune with the changing of the season, then this episode is for you! This Week's Challenge: Find a way to connect with the rebirth of spring and the energy of fertility. Dr. Thayne interviews his wife, Roxanne, on the power of storytelling. You must be as entertaining and compelling as your competitor (social media) to influence your teen. Become a master storyteller to encourage your teen to take action, adopt value, and come closer as a family. After this episode, you will ask yourself what stories you have that would impact your teen. Challenge: Find a story in your life that teaches a principle. Take your time to craft it into something compelling and entertaining. And when you share your story, hold back from explaining the principle; let them discover it themselves.
We interview Munirah Razak, who is a Holistic Yoga Teacher, Life Coach, Ceremonial Cacao Guide and a Sound Healer. Her healing journey began when she found herself disconnected from her body and having negative self-thoughts after living with autoimmune illnesses, chronic pain and trauma for a long time. She believes that healing is a life-long exploration & continues to deepen her personal practice daily.Yoga is more than a few poses and breathing, even though we have been taught that movement and exercise is the cornerstone to this spiritual practice. In reality, there are many other forms of yoga. Yoga is a way of life and meant to be something you take with you throughout your day instead of a thought or intention you leave on the mat.In this episode, Alyssa & Tara chat with Munirah about how to bring the presence from the mat to your daily interactions. This dive into mindfulness will help you look at why you may feel stressed or tired instead of just not being those things by taking time to reconnect with your body in different moments of the day. If you feel like you approach yoga or exercise as something that you check off your list for the day instead of a way to bring more peace and calm into your life, then this episode is for you.You can find Munirah through her links below:Her website: https://luminousyogalife.comFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/luminousyogalifeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/luminousyogalife/This Week's Challenge: Find something that will help you tap back into your body or bring you more mindfulness throughout your day by carrying it with you.We would love to create magick with you in our Weaving Magick Community! https://www.patreon.com/weavingmagickpodcastConnect with us on our Weaving Magick socials:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/weavingmagickpodcastTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@weavingmagickpodcastTwitter: https://twitter.com/taraandalyssaYoutube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOhzGt9TvZr8SU_h8YHTSEQTo get to know Tara:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/iamtarawebb/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@iamtarawebbTo get to know Alyssa:Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thealyssalilly/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@thealyssalilly Support the show
Divination is a topic that bring up distrust or fear in society due to the lack of knowledge, or abundance of incorrect information, around it. Connecting with the great unknown, God, the afterlife, or whatever you want to call it, is seen as dangerous because you are meddling in things you shouldn't or don't know much about. In reality, you have this natural ability to connect with the Divine in each and every moment of your life, without or without tools. In this episode, Tara & Alyssa look at what divination is and how you can get started with this practice in your life. They give tips about each area and have a very open conversation around how to approach this if you are a beginner or even someone with extensive knowledge about each area. Have you every thought about why other people believe something different from you without getting upset or triggered? In today's world, it is common for people to get upset or angry over the fact that someone disagrees with you about information that feels like a fact in your body. Typically, this is due to the belief that by entertaining the idea that they could be right, you are in some way wrong. In this episode, Tara and Alyssa dive into what it feels like to play with beliefs or thoughts that are different from yours. They propose ways to entertain this and how allowing yourself to imagine can actually bring more fun and playfulness into your life. In 2012, Ben completed an Ironman Triathlon in Lake Placid, NY. When he crossed the finish line, he felt on top of the world. But the celebrations ended, and life grew quiet fast. It was in this quiet that Ben noticed something about his life: He was lonely. The next year, Ben spent his 30th birthday sitting on his couch alone. He realized his tunnel vision for goals and achievements had created a life of isolation. For thirty years, he had given people the stiff arm to his heart -- and he was painfully aware. After taking an in-depth inventory of his life, his priorities began to change. This new perspective involved people instead of performance. Relationships with others and with God became his central focus. Following this shift, healthy and authentic relationships began to form in his life. It was through this process that Ben learned a powerful truth he now lives by: Relationships aren't just something. Relationships are everything. Today, Ben's life looks different. His new approach has enabled him to regain his confidence while combatting insecurity and fear. Through vulnerable and authentic relationships, Ben has re-discovered his talents, passions, and calling. With relationships at the center, he is no longer running the race of life in isolation. Ben believes the world deserves a better generation of men, and he wants to help give it to them. His mission is simple -- to help guys reclaim the confidence they need to build strong relationships and make their dent in this world. Ben earned his master's degree in Christian Education/Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary. He is a native of St. Louis, where he has served as a Youth Pastor since 2011 and currently lives with his wife and daughter. He loves adventure, good music, long bike rides, snowboarding trips with the guys, tacos with his incredible family, and donuts. Here's a crucial thing to keep in mind when it comes to making a difference on issues big and small, global and local: You don't need to be the savior rushing in a white horse. In fact, you'd likely only make things worse. Instead, your task today is to find someone who's already working on the thing you care about, so you can add your support to the cause.
As you know, we started this podcast to “Scale up our knowledge, so we don't scale up our systems”. Many of you requested to have another episode about finances, and I couldn't think of a better person to have on the show than my company's CFO, Mike Iverson. Mike is a CPA and owns Trillium Financial. I think Mike's superpower is his ability to take a very complex subject, such as ‘how much money I need to retire, and he can explain that to anyone in a language that they understand. He effortlessly gives people the tools and handles they need to be able to run their personal and business finances. The biggest gift Mike has given me over the years is the gift of clarity. He can look at spreadsheets and glean so much wisdom from the numbers, and then he teaches me what he sees. Because of his knowledge and expertise, I can make wise business moves. Today he is going to touch on so many topics that will help all of us scale up our knowledge, but all of them have one thing in common: finance. Bottom line: If you make money and want to know the best things you can do for your future with your money, Mike Iverson has the perfect financial plan for you. For additional notes and resources check out Douglas’ website.Salient points:Undisciplined people are usually not good with money things (v.11).When are hopes are unsatisfied, we may become heartsick (v.12). Be real about how you feel.Walk with the wise and become wise (v.20). We need people -- help, models, counsel...The proverb about inheritance (v.22) should not be taken as a law or even an ideal, but as an observation. In western societies inheritances do not mean the difference between life and death -- but between moderate comfort and affluence and extreme comfort and affluence. What is the "rod" (v.24)? In 23:13-14 it is the instrument of discipline (see Exod 21:20). Perhaps a better translation would be "stick." The Bible forbids abuse, but encourages discipline. As someone wisely put it, "Many juvenile delinquents are youngsters who have been given a free hand -- but not in the proper place." On the other hand, each child is different, and for some corporal punishment is ineffective or even harmful. Once again, we must be careful about absolutizing proverbs.Bible versionsEach day I have read from the NIV plus one other version.Today I read from the Septuagint. which as the O.T. -- actually the entire Bible, until the N.T. was written -- of the vast majority of 1st century Christians. My version is A New Translation of the Septuagint, tr. 2007.In coming days I will be reading from the Jerusalem Bible (a Catholic translation) and also The Message (a paraphrase, not a translation).Challenge:Find a disciplined person -- someone strong in an area where you are weak, or someone of integrity whom you respect and who might be able to help you.Initiate a discussion."Most people, when they come for advice, want their opinions strengthened, not corrected." May we as God's people be humble enough to seek out the wise.Next lesson: Proverbs 14.

17 – Stoicism, It’s All Greek to Me Summary Make sure you consider the things you can change, the things you can't change, and figure out what things you should do about the things you can change. Make sure that you build up an immune system of your emotions. That you can fight back anything that tries to make you upset, angry, have negative emotions, and how you can reframe anything negative into something that you can deal with and work with. Try to forget about the gaps between what you want and what you don't have. And instead, look at everything around you as a gift. That doesn't mean you give up on your goals, but it also means becoming content with the things around you. Don't let anything push your buttons, not money, not food, not people. Learn to appreciate the people and the things around you to understand what richness they have brought to your life. Sometimes things can be temporary, and that you should appreciate them right now. Come up with a pattern of reflecting at the beginning of the day on the tough things that you're going to have to face. Then reflect at night and how well you did. Challenge Find one thing in your life that pushes your buttons, whether it's a thing or a person, and learn how you can reframe what it is they do to you so that they no longer have the power to change your emotions or make you angry or upset. A Phil Svitek Podcast - A Series From Your 360 Creative Coach
I challenge you to find a "mentor" that suits you. In this I mean it's someone who exemplifies your ideals. In order to do that, you must first define YOUR basis for success. Once you do that, then you can seek someone who showcases that on a day to day level. And the good news is with so many books, podcasts, documentaries, social media, etc it's easier than ever to "get a mentor". Some of mine include Marie Forleo, Tim Ferriss, Simon Sinek, Ryan Holiday, Jemele Hill and Yoga Girl. If you'd like to consider me a mentor, fantastic. If not, no worries. I've come to learn that the messenger is just as important as the message and if I'm not the one for you then find someone who is. I sincerely mean that. Please feel free to ask questions or offer opinions of your own, whether down in the comment section or by hitting me up on social media @PhilSvitek. Lastly, for more free resources from your 360 creative coach, check out my website at http://philsvitek.com.

Clutter in your life is confusing you. Yes, whether you'd like to admit it or not, the physical clutter you may not even see all around you is causing chaos in your life? How is this so? A Distracted Mind is a Chaotic Mind. The more stimuli our brains deal with on a minute-by-minute basis, the less focused we can stay on one thing. This leads to constant distractions, which leads to less productivity, which leads to less happiness in general for most people. So how do you fix it? Plain and simple- clean up your shit! If your car is messy, clean it up! If your house is messy, clean it up! If your closet or kitchen or laundry room is messy, CLEAN IT UP! Challenge: Find the physical clutter in your life and just commit the time and effort to clean it up - then see what happens to your mental state... --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/runyourday/message
Are you leading or are you being lead? And whatever the answer….is it a conscious decision. This podcast made me hurt from laughing and cracked me open with its truth. It's with the brilliant, Traver Boehm. Traver is the author of Today I Rise, a TEDx speaker and men's coach, currently practicing intentional nomadism. He is the founder of the Man Uncivilized Movement redefining the way around the globe experience their masculinity by uniquely blending both the Primal Masculine with the Divine. What I love about this podcast is that I know in my heart of hearts, just by listening people will have some profound shifts and life insights. Traver is the kind of man that makes the feminine feel safe because, within himself, he's done, and continues to do the integration work of his shadows. But most of all, he'd be too humble to say so. In this episode, we unpack the history of masculine trauma, the light, dark and gold of the shadows and the evolutionary consciousness and importance of our collective healing. We unpack how he came to write his freshly published and genuinely soul-awakening book, The Uncivilised Man. A few of the many points we cover: How the masculine unconsciously or consciously outsource their emotional healing to the feminine What's in the shadows of the collective masculine What a man can do to make a woman feel safe The history of how men became civilised, suppressed and traumatized and the ripple effect that we are now facing. The devil and savior of social media and its connection to depression and healing How the birth of the Civilised concept evolved from a conversation about Mc Donalds. What a shadow is and how to find the gold in the shadows and or reclaim the power that's maybe there The red flags that there is trauma to be worked through and how it plays out in a relationship and life How the masculine shadow triggers the feminine shadow and how the feminine can make the moves first to catalyse healing What steps you can take to heal and move towards the truest most conscious version of yourself? Compassion, compassion and more compassion. CHALLENGE: Find someone you can trust and have an honest conversation with, and share what your written reply to this question is (writing for one minute) “if my pain could speak to me today it would say”… Pain has depth, you have to go to a depth to reach pain. You have to breathe to find it and then breathe to heal it. So, loves... Pretty please know we LOVE to see your reviews and ratings, they makes smile. Until next time.... Hugs, Ambz
I love the quote, “The first step to receiving an answer is being brave enough to ask a question,” because sometimes, it does take bravery to admit you don’t have all the answers! And you know what, that’s OK! No one has 100% of the answers 100% of the time. Here’s the good news. We all have different knowledge about different things. Life is like one big information-swap. But you can’t start learning new things until you start asking questions… And that’s what we’re doing today… Answering your questions! A big thank you to everyone who wrote in with a question for today’s episode. Buckle up, we’re covering a lot of ground in this episode – from how to share an Instagram post, to what’s the difference between Facebook ads and boosting a post… and everywhere in between! Answersville, here we come! Question: Any tips on making a good website? Answer: Less is more. You need way less text than you think, especially on the home page – the first page people see when they go to your website. If people are overwhelmed by the amount of information they see, especially right off the bat, they are less likely to stick around and read it. It’s like trying to give someone a sip of water from a fire hose – it just doesn’t work. Whittle your message down to just a few sentences – 3-5 sentences or less – and work with that. Think of 2 or 3 nonprofits, or businesses that you LOVE. You love their style, you love how they present themselves. Go to their website and look at how much text they have, especially on their front page. Example: I’m obsessed with Joanna Gaines from Fixer Upper. Her Magnolia Market website has two sentences in the main part of the front page, plus the company’s manifesto and a few links. Example: St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. One of the biggest nonprofits out there. It costs $2.3 million dollars a day to run the hospital -- they definitely know what they’re doing in terms of marketing and fundraising. They have 4 sentences on the page. You don’t need a lot of words, you just need your words to mean a lot. Challenge: Find 2 or 3 businesses or nonprofits that you want to emulate – you like their style and you want your website to resemble theirs. Use their styles as a guide, and work to get the most important details about your nonprofit into less than 5 sentences on your nonprofit’s website front page. If you have a big story or important details that might be important to your donors, you can absolutely include that stuff – just give it its own separate page where people can read it if they are interested. Q: What are the websites with the free, good quality photos you always talk about? A: Unsplash.com and Pexels.com Q: What is the difference between a Facebook ad and boosting a post? A: Facebook ads is a more advanced version of boosting a post. Basically, you have more options to choose from when it comes to where you ad appears – for example, if you boost a post, it will show up more in the News Feed. With Facebook ads, you can choose if it appears on the side of the News Feed, or in Messenger ads, Instagram Stories, things like that. With Facebook ads, you also have some different options in creating different audiences. To create a Facebook ad, you will use Facebook Ads Manager (facebook.com/adsmanager). From there, if you’re signed into Facebook on a computer, you’ll see your nonprofit’s ad account. If you manage more than one page, you might have to select the account for the page that you want to access from the dropdown bar in the middle of the menu at the top. You can get a lot of the same things accomplished with your advertising by simply boosting a Facebook post. Boosting a post or an event on Facebook is INFINITELY simpler and more user friendly. If you’re a busy person and you want to get a lot of bang for your buck without putting a ton of time and effort in, boost a Facebook post and don’t mess with Facebook ads. You can re-boost old Facebook posts that have worked for you in the past. You can still target your audience demographic and location. There’s lots of overlap between Facebook ads and boosting posts, so I recommend going with just boosting a post if you’ve got a lot on your plate. Q: I can’t figure out how to share or like Instagram posts from your podcast. Help! A: To LIKE a post on Instagram, all you have to do is double tap the picture you want to like. Sharing on Instagram, is possibly the most complicated thing about Instagram. There is not currently a button you can just push to share a post in your feed. You CAN, however, share someone’s post to your Instagram Story…We went over how to use Instagram Stories back in Episode 16, if you need a tutorial (link below). All you have to do to share a post to your story is tap the little paper airplane and select “Add post to your story.” It will let you preview it before you actually post it, plus you can add writing, stickers and things like that. I encourage you to try it – again, it will just send you to a preview before it posts, so there’s no harm in just seeing how it works! It is possible to repost someone else’s post to your feed, but you have to download a whole separate app for that. There are a number of apps out there like the Repost for Instagram app that you can use in addition to regular ol’ Instagram…. But I’m here to tell you, reposting apps like that are a time wasting machine, really hard to use, and not fun at all. So if you truly want to support someone on Instagram, the easiest way to do that is to like their post, leave them a comment – even if it’s just an emoji - and share their post in your story. Q: What is a podcast? A: I get this question a lot… and if you’re listening to THIS podcast right now, you’re already ahead of the curve! There are a lot of people out there who A) don’t know what a podcast is, or B) have heard of podcasts but they don’t actually know how to access them. A podcast is basically, like a radio show you can listen to any time. It’s an audio file that lives out there on the internet and you can access it anytime you want on your phone or a computer or a tablet. There are different apps you can use to access podcasts like Apple Podcasts – if you have an iPhone, you already have this app downloaded. Stitcher is another popular podcast app, iHeart, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and Luminary are all the big ones… You can listen to Unlocking Your Nonprofit Potential on all of those apps - links to listen below. Podcasts are really interesting because there is a podcast for everybody… It’s literally a library of topics, and hosts, and genres. Health and fitness, self-improvement, gardening, podcasts that will teach you a foreign language, comedy, fiction, nonfiction, news, sports, entertainment and so much more. I drive all the time – as you might know, I live in a very rural little corner of the world in Wyoming, so I regularly do things like, drive half an hour to get the mail. Or drive 100 miles one way to go to the dentist. So if I want to just zone out and be entertained or feel productive and learn something while I’ve got some windshield time, I listen to a podcast. Q: Who are your favorite nonprofits to follow on social media? A: Holy Angels and the Humane Society of Central Oregon. Holy Angels, is a nonprofit organization based in Louisiana that supports and empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It’s an amazing organization and they also have a fabulous social media presence. It’s easy to see why they have more than 14,000 followers – their posts are clear and easy to understand, they often give a call to action that tells their audience what to do next when looking at their post like call or text a number, or visit a website or use a hashtag. They also have a good blend of inspirational posts with educational posts and they showcase how they can be a resource to the community. They take lots of photos of their events and activities and it really puts a face to their organization and what they do, and it’s easy to scroll through and be inspired by their mission! Another great example of a nonprofit organization that has a great social media presence is the Humane Society of Central Oregon. Not only are they one of the MOST consistently posting organizations I’ve ever seen, they do a mix of inspirational and informational posts, and they almost always use “THE FORMULA” which is a picture, a caption and a call to action. These organizations have been around a long time, and have grown their following over a long time. Do you know how they grew their following? Posting consistently and always posting about their mission. They kept showing up. They put effort into their posts, they tell their audience what to do next – how to support them, how to get involved. And, everything they post ties in DIRECTLY to their mission. If you’re brand new, or just starting out, or maybe your organization isn’t new, but your consistent presence on Facebook and Instagram is new, then I want you to focus on being consistent. Keep showing up. And if you are overwhelmed by it, remember – all you NEED is a picture, a 1-2 sentence caption to go with it, and a call to action. You can download my cheat sheet below. A HUGE thanks to Karen for writing in with her sweet note of encouragement – it made my day! I think everyone has days where they’re on the brink of quitting whatever it is that they're doing. But here’s the thing… We can’t quit. Now more than ever, we can’t quit. The world needs YOU to keep going, and keep helping people in your community. There is someone that needs you to encourage them, someone that needs you to help them, and someone that needs your nonprofit. So even if you feel like you’re just exhausted and you have no momentum, I want you to look at ONE THING you have accomplished this week. One step you took forward, no matter how tiny. I want you to look at that thing, and celebrate it. I want you to jump out of your chair and clap your hands because YOU MOVED FORWARD. Celebrate that!!! Then, I want you to build on it. I love that quote that says: “Success is the sum of small efforts repeated day in and day out.” So repeat that tiny little step you took forward! AND LOOK, there is your momentum. Keep going! Keep going! Keep going! If you have a question for me – be brave and ask! Send me a message on Facebook or Instagram or send me an email through NonprofitPotential.com and I’ll answer it on the show! "Mom and Dad are kissing?! Ew, gross!" Learn how modeling healthy relationships can actually help protect your kids from pornography. The other day I was kissing my husband and my son came around the corner and said “Ewwww! Mom! That’s gross!” and hid his face. But it’s actually a good thing for our kids to see us being affectionate! Our kids might throw a fuss. But they also do that when we ask them to eat their vegetables! Today we’ll be be talking about the contrast between healthy relationships and pornography--and teaching our kids to recognize the difference. Three reasons to model healthy relationships in our home are: Helping our kids to develop a healthier sense of their own sexuality Helping kids reject pornography, and Teaching kids about the complexity of relationships I. “SMOOCHING” TEACHES KIDS ABOUT HEALTHY SEXUALITY -The saying ”Do as I say, not as I do” is a farce! Kids learn by example. -Laura Brotherson, Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist, Certified Sex Therapist, says: ”While kids may sometimes act “grossed out” by the love and affection you have for each other it actually creates a safe and secure environment for your children to know that their [parents] love each other… Children also develop a healthier sense of their own sexuality when they see love and appropriate affection displayed in the home.” (On her website, StrengtheningMarriage.com, they actually had a “Gross Out Your Kids” Photo Contest. Pretty cute!) -It’s also more than just embarrassing your kids. Love (and sex) in their healthy pure form are about safety, security, bonding with another human being that you know will always be there. -Try to stay engaged with your kids on this topic in their sphere too. Be interested in their relationships and the relationships their friends are having at school. Know what’s going on. [Wondering how to talk about healthy intimacy with your kids? Check out the books, 30 Days of Sex Talks for Ages 3 to 7; 30 Days of Sex Talks for Ages 8 to 11; and 30 Days of Sex Talks for Ages 12+ from Educate and Empower Kids.*] II. “SMOOCHING” TEACHES KIDS TO REJECT PORNOGRAPHY -If we don’t give our kids sex ed, they are going to get it elsewhere--everywhere! -Porn focuses on physical appearance, risky behaviour and exaggerated aspects of sex. All the ingredients one might look for in a healthy relationship are purposely left out of the script. Love, intimacy, kindness, etc. are replaced with violence and aggression. -According to Dr. John Foubert, porn contains the perfect recipe for rape. He’s not suggesting that everyone who views porn will commit rape. But he is concerned that easy access to pornography is teaching young people that sex and violence go together. -If our kids’ only exposure to relationships (affection) is pornography, they will only have one model to relate to and one example to follow. One horrific example was a juvenile recently arrested for strangling girlfriend in car--exposure to porn had taught him that’s what she wanted. -It’s ok to tell our kids we have sex. Dr. Jill Manning, a psychologist, says “Teaching healthy sexual intimacy and relationships in the home is one of the most important value-based areas of teaching in today’s world.” -Healthy relationships = respect (love, connection, protecting each other) Pornography = disrespect (lust, objectification, exploitation, abuse) -Teach your kids the difference between healthy and unhealthy relationships so that when they encounter the opposite (confusing and titillating as it may be) they will know the difference. III. “SMOOCHING” TEACHES KIDS ABOUT THE COMPLEXITY OF RELATIONSHIPS -It’s important for us to be REAL around our kids -In reality, relationships are messy, unfiltered and different in every home -Affection in the home helps to create a safe, secure environment for our kids -Listen to the podcast as we describe the different types of relationships in our families of origin and our marriages! Some are more demonstrative, and some are more reserved. And that’s ok! Whatever works! -Every relationship is different and beautiful in its own way. We don’t actually have to literally “smooch” in front of our kids to have the great benefits we’ve talked about. What we’re really talking about is demonstrating healthy relationships in the home--whatever that might look like for you! CHALLENGE: Find a way to talk about healthy relationships with your kids week. Find teaching moments in your own relationship with your spouse or in the media. Just start talking! Welcome to Episode 140 of the ProBlogger podcast and to the third channel in our Seven Days to Getting Your Blogging Groove Back Challenge. Today, I want to issue you with a challenge to create a piece of content that is in some way a review. To recap, everyday for this next week I'm going to suggest a particular style of blog post for you to create. You choose the topic, I choose the style. My challenge is to create and publish that content within twenty-four hours if you can and then to share it over in the ProBlogger Challenge Group which I’ll link to on today’s show notes. Once you’ve shared it there, to check out some of the other posts that others who are participating in this challenge have also shared. Today, my challenge to you is to create and publish a review post. Again, you can do this as a written post, a video, a podcast, anything that you choose to do. I’ll probably talk a little bit more about writing, but you translate that into the medium that you want to use. Today’s challenge could be a life changing moment for some of you. I know that’s a big statement but I say it because where I am today as a full time blogger is because I once almost accidentally wrote a review post on one of my early blogs. I had no idea at the time that what I was doing was literally changing my life but it did. It was 2004, I’ve been blogging for a couple of years on my first personal blog. But on this day, I impulsively decided to start a second blog. It was a photo blog in which I wanted to share photos from a trip...
Acts 2:42-47 They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved. Acts 4:32-37 All the believers were one in heart and mind, NO one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had. With great power, the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God's grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need. Joseph, a Levite from Cyprus, whom the apostles called Barnabas (which means “son of encouragement”), sold a field he owned and brought the money and put it at the apostles' feet. An Exciting Church is a learning church. An Exciting church is a fellowshipping church. An Exciting church is a praying church. An Exciting church is an awesome church. An Exciting church is a church where things happen. An exciting church is a sharing church. An exciting church is a worshipping church. An Exciting church is a Happy church.Challenge: Find one way you would enjoy generously serving in our church.
Luke 2:25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and devout, He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was on him. The desire to be comforted is a universal human need.Luke 2:36-38 There was also a prophet, Anna, the daughter of Penuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years after her marriage, and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying, coming up to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about the child to all who were liking forward to the redemption of Jerusalem. Jesus provides what we need.Become a Marveler.Become a Mover.Moved by the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. Become a Messenger.Challenge: Find opportunities to share the true meaning of Christmas.
Welcome to day two of Only Human's Listen Up! bootcamp week. If you're here for the first time, here's how to participate. The Challenge: Find a friend, stand face to face, and reflect the other person like you’re standing in front of a mirror. If they smile, you smile back. If they frown, you frown. Pay attention to your partner and reflect back what you see. Fall in sync, and move together. Watch Only Human's Mary Harris and Paige Cowett demonstrate "mirroring": Okay, we know it seems strange to talk about body language for a listening challenge. We don't listen to body movements or facial expressions. But we would be missing a whole lot of information if we ignored them. Plus, your own body language during conversation communicates a lot, even affecting how well someone tells a story to you. So we took a page from some experts on body language: actors. Okieriete “Oak” Onaodowan performs two very different types of characters in the smash hit musical Hamilton. Being able to read and “mirror” the body language of others is one of the keys to Onaodowan’s success on stage — and it also helps him better understand and empathize with people in his everyday life. Fay Simpson teaches movement at the Tisch School's graduate acting program at NYU. She developed a physical training method for actors called The Lucid Body, and often has her students “mirror” each other as a frequent exercise in the studio. “When you understand body language,” Simpson explains, “you understand the intention of someone, what they want from you.” Do the mirroring exercise with a partner, then tell us what it was like for you. Did you get past the awkwardness? Did you learn something about your partner? Leave us a voicemail at (803) 820-WNYC or send a voice memo to onlyhuman@wnyc.org To make sure you hear every challenge, subscribe to the Only Human podcast on iTunes or anywhere else using our RSS feed.
