Peter Ørum fra Nordjylland er oprindelig gartner. Ud over nogle år i begyndelsen af 60’erne, hvor han var soldat i min hjemby Randers, har han arbejdet med planter hele sit liv.  I 1965 tog han så på studietur til USA for at lære noget mere om, hvordan man starter en planteskole. Det fik han lært, og startede også en planteskole. Men ikke i den jyske muld. Det blev herovre i den amerikanske Midt-vest.  Peter døbte planteskolen “Midwest Groundcovers”. Tanken var altså at lave bunddække-planter. Men nu producerer de meget andet.  De har et datterselskab, der hedder Midwest Trading, som laver pottemuld og kompost og et andet datterselskab, Midwest GROmasters, som laver vandingsanlæg. Lederen af det sidstnævnte hedder Finn Aagaard. Han er oprindeligt fra Aalborg og ham møder jeg også i denne episode.   Men først sætter vi os i Peters pickup og kører rundt i det kæmpemæssige område, som de råder over i dag. I bilen fortæller Peter om tiden, hvor det hele startede. Om hvordan han tog herover, da han var færdig i militæret. Han var endt som løjtnant i ingeniørtropperne og var så heldig at komme til USA på ”immigrant visum”, hvor han kunne blive så længe, han ville. Det var noget nemmere i 60’erne end i dag. Han havde dog ikke planer om at blive så længe. Han skulle jo blot lære lidt om, hvordan de drev planteskoler herovre - og så hjem til Danmark og starte sin egen hjemme i Jylland. Men det endte med at han startede sin egen lille planteskole her i USA i det små. Han startede med 5 acres - det er omkring 2 hektarer. Og det er ikke meget.  De råder nu over 1000 acres - og altså 200 gange så meget som i starten. Det svarer til et område, der er større end 550 fodboldbaner. I dag producerer de over 20 millioner planter om året og har 300 medarbejdere i højsæsonen og 100 på fuld tid året rundt. Det er KÆMPE stort.  Når jeg siger til Peter, at jeg er forundret over, at det kan blive så stort forklarer han: ”Indenfor 200 km har vi et 10 millioner mennesker, og hvis så mange af dem har penge og huse og haver, så hjælper det jo på det”. De valgte at kalde det Midwest Groundcovers, fordi de starten blot ville producere bunddække-planter. Men i dag producerer de meget andet. Peter fortæller også om, hvordan han mødte sin kommende kone, Irma, i Den Danske Forening. Hun er født i Chicago, men har danske forældre, så hun kunne tale en smule dansk allerede. De besluttede, at deres to børn også skulle lære at tale dansk, så de lavede en regel: Irma talte engelsk til dem og Peter talte kun dansk til dem. Og lod som om han ikke forstod, hvad de sagde med mindre de talte dansk til ham. Peter og Irma fik to børn, en dreng og en pige. Desværre blev drengen dræbt i en trafikulykke, da han var 16 år. En ulykke på Peters Nimbus motorcykel, der var tæt også at koste Peter livet. Deres datter, Christa, som i dag er sidst i 40’erne er i gang med at overtage ledelsen af firmaet sammen med sin mand. Peter selv prøver at træde lidt tilbage - og er i gang med at tømme sit kontor. Sådan mere eller mindre. Jeg kan mærke, at han har svært ved at slippe det helt. Han er i dag bestyrelsesformand.   Bare sådan lige for at forklare, at Peter ikke er en Hr. hvem-som-helst… på hans kontor hænger der et billede, hvor han står sammen med sin kone Irma - og George W Bush. Vel at mærke taget mens Bush var præsident.  Da jeg ser det gætter jeg på, at Peter er republikaner. Men han er ikke stor fan af Donald Trump Lyt også til Episode #101 - Ikke Trump fan, men stemte på ham. På et tidspunkt har Peter et møde, og jeg går en tur med Finn Aagaard. Han fortæller, hvordan han havnede herovre. Han var murer, men da der var byggestop i 70’erne blev han lokket herover. Bare et par år, men så endte han med at blive her. Vi får en længere snak om danske traditioner og helligdage som dansk-amerkianer. Peter fortalte mig, at hans kone Irma er kommet på plejehjem - som oveni købet er Det Danske Plejehjem i Chicago. Så på vej tilbage kører jeg forbi. Dels for at hilse på Irma og dels for at se, hvordan et dansk plejehjem ser ud i USA.   Peter siger til mig, at jeg skal give hende et knus fra ham og fortælle, at han kommer og henter hende i morgen.  Jeg bliver taget imod af lederen Scott Swanson. Og lige inden jeg bliver vist rundt møder jeg Irma. Scott fortæller mig om, hvordan de holder fast i de danske traditioner og den danske madtradition. Blandt andet har de en ”frikadelle-dag”, hvor de også inviterer gæster udefra. Ifølge Scott er de verdensmestre i brun sovs. Og så går vi en tur rundt på plejehjemmet, som virker meget dansk og er rigtigt hyggeligt. Der er billeder med malerier af danske steder på væggene, og så kommer vi forbi et sted, hvor der står et klaver - og så er der et billede på væggen af en kendt dansker, Victor Borge, som har været forbi et par gange.  Jeg sætter mig ned og sludrer lidt med et par af beboerne. Blandt andre den søde 100-årige Ann, der har svært ved at høre, hvad jeg siger. Hun fortæller blandt andet om, hvordan hun har boet i Silkeborg.  Jeg sidder og sludrer med disse søde gamle damer i lang tid - og da de inviterer mig til at spise med (sovs, kartofler og mørt oksekød) kan jeg ikke sige nej. Jeg sætter mig ved siden af Irma og hun fortæller om, hvordan hun faldt for Peter - selvom han ikke kunne danse.  For at opsummere mit indtryk efter en dag med Peter og folkene omkring hans imperium. Peter Ørum tog til USA for mere end 50 år siden og har virkelig udlevet den amerikanske drøm. Fra ingenting har han fået tingene til at vokse - og ikke kun planterne.  Men jeg får fornemmelsen af, at det bestemt ikke har været noget, han har gjort for pengenes skyld. Da jeg spørger ham, om han er blevet multimillionær, snakker han lidt udenom. ”Det kommer an på, hvordan du tæller det. Vil du tælle tønder land eller vil du tælle planter”, siger han med et smil. Men siger så også, at ja, måske kunne han sælge det, men det vil der da ikke være noget sjovt ved. Lige nu glæder han sig blot over, at hans datter og svigersøn er i gang med at overtage det. He does some of his best work outside the office! Taking a ride on a bike and when he came back to the office he came back with some great ideas! This week's challenge: Create a travel vision board of at least five places you would like to live and work! Not just going there and hiding in a hotel, but actually going somewhere you can go and live. Pretend as if you're one of the people the best you can while you're there! Challenge yourself to think about what it would take to get there! Challenge #2: when you get there, say hello to people! You never know what will come from a simple hello. Kevin Huhn has a passion for travel and talks about how as a human there's things we can only learn in nature, when we're surrounded by nature. Signs and logos, that's all man made, but nature is what brings us together. Through walks in the woods, what we think is important fades into insignificance next to the vastness of the universe. When you experience little things in nature firsthand in an attitude of gratitude, it changes your whole perspective. Life's not about stuff, it's about experiences. When you experience people, food, culture, experiences, etc. you realize we don't need stuff. We need to connect with each other. We need to help each other. That's what it's all about! He also talks today about the human condition and how at our core human beings are about giving. Hurt people, hurt people. They don't know how else to act! In our truest form, we are giving people. We're kind, we open up to each other, we help each other. Episode challenge: Gain clarity using The Law of Attraction! Take a piece of paper: Write my ideal________ (trip, for example) Everything you don't want| So what do I want? Then fold the paper over in two and only look at what do you want. Just notice the things on your list! Whenever you're in that moment, you'll see it! Seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall open. Get clear! What would you really want! If you want to really have fun with it, just give yourself 10 minutes and write down everything you can think of. Feel more, think less. Keep track of when you notice every time you get closer to something you want. Months before 9/11, U.S. Air Force captain Scott Swanson patrolled the skies over Afghanistan with a Predator drone. Swanson and his team were hunting Osama bin Laden. And they found him. But this was months before the new drones could fire missiles, and the pilots could only watch as bin Laden walked away. On Jan 23, 2001 – just three days into George W. Bush’s presidency – a Predator drone test fired a Hellfire missile for the first time. A new age of war had begun. Swanson is the first human to use a Predator-fired Hellfire missile to take a life. From a trailer truck in a garage behind CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia, Swanson loosed a missile from a drone roughly 7,000 miles away in Kandahar. The missile struck its target – a pickup truck outside a building that intelligence said was hiding Taliban leader Mohammad Omar. The missile hit and killed two of Omar’s bodyguards. This week on War College, we replay our conversation with Swanson. He walks us through the early years of the drone program, how it changed him, and how it changed the world.
