I sit down with long-time L.A. Times writer & columnist Dylan Hernandez to discuss his recent column castigating the Dodgers for staying silent during the ICE Raids. We get into his origin story as a Japanese-Salvadoran growing up in South Pasadena and attending UCLA, as well as his view of the current media landscape, and why print (and the L.A. Times) are suffering.

My guest for Episode #304 of the My Favorite Mistake podcast is Dr. Tia Warrick, a clinical research leader, epidemiologist, author, and entrepreneur who has spent nearly a decade working in the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. Episode page with video, transcript, and more She's the founder of Lesous Consulting, a firm dedicated to supporting clinical research professionals and organizations through education, business analytics, and strategic consulting. With a strong academic background—including a doctorate in health science and clinical health education—Dr. Warrick is committed to empowering the next generation of researchers and bringing more awareness to the vast career opportunities within clinical research. In this episode, Dr. Warrick shares her "favorite mistake"—not speaking up for herself early in her career. She candidly reflects on a time when she took on significantly more responsibilities than her job description called for but hesitated to advocate for a promotion or raise. Her story highlights how staying silent led to missed opportunities and feelings of frustration. But more importantly, she explains how learning to take accountability and find her voice ultimately fueled her confidence, career progression, and entrepreneurial path. We also explore the broader challenges and opportunities within the clinical research industry, especially for early-career professionals who may not realize the variety of roles available. Dr. Warrick discusses the importance of mentorship, the need for greater visibility into clinical research career paths, and her motivation for writing Burst the Bubble, a book designed to inform and inspire future talent in the pharmaceutical world. She also touches on how she now teaches others to confidently advocate for themselves—whether during salary negotiations or while shaping their career direction. Questions and Topics: What's your favorite mistake, and what did you learn from it? Was your early role as a clinical research coordinator before or after your advanced degrees? When did you realize you should have spoken up for yourself sooner? Was there a mentor or moment that helped you come to that realization? After receiving a small raise, did you try to advocate for more or take another path? Do you share this lesson with students or early-career professionals you mentor? How do you coach others on negotiating compensation and advocating for themselves? Why is it especially important to speak up early in your career? What are some misconceptions people have about roles in clinical research? How do you raise awareness about the breadth of opportunities in the field? How strong is the job outlook in clinical research, and how might AI impact it? What was the inspiration behind founding Lesous Consulting? What leadership lessons have you learned so far as a new entrepreneur? How do you create a culture where people feel safe to speak up and share feedback? What does psychological safety look like in your company and classroom? Can you tell us about the AI platform you're developing and how it supports clinical research?

In this episode, we tackle a conversation we'd rather avoid—but know we must have. How can leaders create the conditions for constructive dialogue in divisive times? Do they take a stand based on their company's vision, values, and business needs, even if it alienates some? Or do they stay silent, wary of the risks in today's political climate? We don't claim to have “the” answer, but we do offer ideas on how to: • Prepare people for difficult conversations. • Take it slow—without turning it into an initiative or labeling it. • Act once you're grounded in what's real and what the company needs. • Foster a space for candid, honest dialogue. No neatly wrapped solutions here—just real talk. We think you'll enjoy it anyway. Come on in, grab a snack, and welcome!
Over the last few years, I have witnessed the berating, shaming and bullying of Christians and conservatives for their biblical and/or political views. In this episode, I am joined by my sorority sister and sister-in-Christ, Daisy Schroeck, as we process together the criticism, feelings, cost, Godly rebukes, and lessons learned from sharing our faith publicly. We look to Scripture to see how we ought to respond when faced with rejection and opposition. We discuss where we draw confidence from to share boldly, and more importantly, we highlight the grave cost to keeping Truth and our faith to ourselves. Many people struggle to speak up about their mental health needs, even when their treatment isn't working. Why does self-advocacy feel so daunting? If accessing care feels out of reach due to financial or geographical limitations, they discuss creative solutions like self-study tools, free resources, and online communities. They also dig into the bigger picture: why treatment is just the beginning of the journey and how continued effort, especially after intensive programs, is key to lasting progress. This episode is packed with actionable advice and compassionate perspectives to empower you to take control of your mental health. Ready to find your voice and take the next step? Tune in now! Internal barriers could be anxiety—'If I speak up, maybe I'll insult the therapist'—while external barriers could be family members, insurance, and other systemic factors." - Jonathan Teller [00:05:00] "One option for patients is to write down their concerns before a session. If they don't feel comfortable sharing them out loud, they can hand the clinician a sheet of paper. That might be easier than speaking directly." - Jonathan Teller [00:06:00] "I'm a big fan of writing things down. My mom used to prepare pages of questions before seeing her doctor, and I used to make fun of her for it. But in hindsight, I realize how valuable it is—it helps you think through what you want to get out of the appointment." - Kristina Orlova [00:08:00] "If you have health insurance, you can call your provider and get a list of different clinicians in your area who take your insurance. If you don't, looking for pro bono work or online resources could be a starting point." - Jonathan Teller [00:13:00] "There's a common misconception that when one goes to a residential treatment facility and they leave, the work is done. But the work has really only started." - Jonathan Teller [00:17:00] "There's a big misconception that once you complete a treatment program, you're done. But OCD is a lifelong condition, and the real work begins when you leave treatment and start applying the tools in everyday life." - Kristina Orlova [00:18:00] "Education is critical for both patients and their families. Loved ones often accommodate compulsions because they think it's the right thing to do. But once they understand OCD and how accommodation maintains symptoms, they can start making real changes." - Jonathan Teller Our Guest Jonathan Teller is a third-year clinical psychology PhD student at Northern Illinois University, specializing in the study of anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD). His research focuses on uncovering the factors and mechanisms that influence the onset and maintenance of these conditions. With a strong interest in evidence-based practices, Jonathan is dedicated to exploring ways to enhance the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and exposure and response prevention (ERP) therapy to improve clinical outcomes. Beyond his research, Jonathan is deeply committed to expanding access to mental health care and breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health. He is a passionate advocate for education and awareness, striving to create a world where mental health care is accessible, equitable, and understood. Jonathan's work bridges the gap between research and practice, aiming to make meaningful contributions to both the scientific community and those seeking support for their mental health. The Downfall Of Diddy | The Case Against Sean 'Puffy P Diddy' Combs
Ever wonder why celebrities go silent when their famous friends get caught in a scandal? It's not just about avoiding awkward questions on the red carpet. PR experts say it's a calculated move to protect their own brands and avoid getting tangled in someone else's mess. Basically, staying quiet is the best way to avoid catching any stray negativity. Think about it: even if you've only been photographed with someone once, people might assume you're besties. Add in the court of public opinion, and things can get messy fast. Experts say it's better to lay low and let the legal process play out, even if it means deleting your entire Twitter account like Usher did. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Text us your thoughts about this episode or ideas for future episodes! After reading her book, "The Longest Race: Inside the Secret World of Abuse, Doping, and Deception on Nike's Elite Running Team", I was eager to connect with Kara Goucher for an in-depth conversation. For those less familiar with the road running scene, Kara was one of the top American distance runners of the 2000s and 2010s, achieving podium finishes at prestigious events like the Boston and New York City Marathons, as well as the 2012 Olympic Marathon Trials. She also claimed victory at the US Half Marathon Championships the same year, among numerous other accolades. In 2004, she joined the Nike Oregon Project, led by distance running legend Alberto Salazar. Behind the scenes, however, Salazar was pushing the boundaries of anti-doping regulations while fostering a toxic culture of misogyny and athlete abuse. Despite the risk of losing everything and facing immense pressure, Kara found the courage to speak out and successfully advocate for meaningful change. In our discussion, we explore various themes from The Longest Race, and we also discuss current events, including her podcast with Des Linden - "Nobody Asked Us", and the challenges with today's anti-doping investigative models. Before we dive in, please note that this episode is a crossover from my guest-hosting stint on the Run To The Top podcast earlier this spring. “If you can't stand up for a human being that you respect, and love, and appreciate, and if you can't stand up for a principle that you believe in, if you can't stand up when somebody's doing something that isn't right—then who are you?”Katherine Brodsky was at the peak of her journalistic career, writing about technology, film, and culture for publications such as Variety and The Washington Post, when she fell victim to the cancel culture mob.“People were sending me threats. They were trying to reach out to my employers, or past employers, to make sure I was unhireable … People were attempting to dox me. So it just really spiraled beyond anything I've ever experienced,” says Ms. Brodsky. In this episode, we dive into her new book, “No Apologies: How to Find and Free Your Voice in the Age of Outrage,” and discuss her views, as a Canadian, on the recent federal court ruling against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.“I've been a liberal voter. So, I'm the Trudeau target demographic, although I wasn't a huge fan. And I've even voted left of that, at a certain point. But the idea that you can just ignore a huge segment of your population and just paint them as evil and racist, and labels that didn't even make sense that he gave them, it was very terrifying to see. And I went from not maybe liking him very much—because he was very virtue-signally, and I don't think he was particularly smart—to really actively being afraid that he had this authoritarian streak,” says Ms. Brodsky.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

In this episode of Flip Your Script, host Kristi Piehl and Cheryl talk about the importance of sharing personal stories to help others.
Going into 2023, Harris Jones had an impressive work resume. She was the third employee at RehabWallet, a successful real estate startup but she was unsatisfied with how she spent her time after work. She was a self proclaimed quiet and meek person, nervous to speak at the real estate events she attended for her work. However, she knew she enjoyed the events and wanted to shift from outside viewer to active participant. Most people set intentions or resolutions in January that fall apart before the month ends, let alone accomplish a major change in the year. Harris joined us on Build A Wealthy Spirit to walk us through how she went through her 2023 transformation. Realizing she enjoyed the events but had a blocker for public speaking, she set forth a plan to become a paid public speaker. Her journey would include removing her adult "baby" teeth, joining Toastmasters, going on stage for improv and in that same year, her first paid speaking experience. There are a few takeaways that Harris shares for anyone who is looking at this new year and thinking they want to finally make *that* big change. Whether it's to get that six pack, adopt a puppy, or go on stage for the first time. Most of us have something we deeply want to do, but don't even know how to push ourselves to reach out full potential. Harris is living proof that taking the first step can open the doors to a new you. Let us know if you have a big goal for 2024! #MentalHealth #speakyourtruth #reality 0:00 - 2:30 - Intro 2:30 - 15:20 The Cost of Speaking Your Truth 15:20 - Wrap Up Hello Everyone, Hope all is well. Welcome to our segment on Mental Health, this week ☺️! In today's conversation, we're talking about the impact that telling the truth has on our lives. Speaking the truth... is delicate. We may risk offending people, hurting someone's feelings, or misinterpreting the sequence of events that took place, all in all, creating emotional discomfort. An aversion to emotional discomfort is a key reason why many of us withhold the truth. Whether we are safeguarding ourselves or others, keeping our thoughts to ourselves always seems to be the safest choice. But it isn't. Those who fail to speak their truth, also fail to live their truth, or in truth. Our words ARE the power that shape our reality. Read that again. While it makes sense to refine your communication skills, understand the significance of time and place, and choose your moments with care, it turns out that not speaking your truth is the strongest conduit to living life in regret. Who would have thought? You have more to lose in silence, than you ever had at risk when speaking up. Any questions? Society, as we talk about A LOT on this podcast, has a lot of cookie-cutter rules and expectations that aren't always necessarily aligned with what we, as individual people, want for ourselves and our lives. That said, today's episode is inspired from an activity in Dr. Aziz's book, "Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty... and Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, and Unapologetically Being Yourself." Having done the activity myself, I can promise you it's POWERFUL because it helps us cut through all the external "shoulds" from society. When we have our own individual, "Bill of Rights," we have a roadmap on what we value and how we want to live our lives.

10 Books That Changed My Life In 2022 It's truly incredible how books can change your perspective on life. They can expand your mind and help you acquire new knowledge. Books also just give you time out from the fast-paced world we live in and allow us time to wind down and relax. Here are the books that changed my life in 2022 1. Secrets of The Millionaire Mindset - Book by T. Harv Eker Secrets of the Millionaire Mind (2005) explains how people unconsciously develop rigid attitudes and behavioral patterns in their relationship to money that they learned from their parents – and that will determine their future wealth. 2. The 10X Rule - Book by Grant Cardone The 10X Rule by Grant Cardone is a book on success. It argues that to be successful, you must be willing to work 10 times harder (10X) than everyone else. Cardone says that you should approach success as a duty, obligation, and responsibility. To be successful is the ethical thing to do. 3. The Richest Man in Babylon - Book by George Samuel Clason The Richest Man in Babylon reminds us not to miss good opportunities and always trust your instincts. Keep track of expenses and invest wisely. Find ways to guard against loss and you will be in a more secure place when the time comes to retire. Earn while you can, but always plan for the future. 4. The 5 AM Club - Book by Robin Sharma The idea was this: You wake up an hour before your spouse and your kids and use that distraction-free time to focus on your personal well-being, with a mix of exercise, meditation, and reading or learning. 5. Rich Dad Poor Dad - Book by Robert Kiyosaki and Sharon Lechter Rich Dad Poor Dad is about Robert Kiyosaki and his two dads—his real father (poor dad) and the father of his best friend (rich dad)—and the ways in which both men shaped his thoughts about money and investing. 6. No Excuses - Book by Brian Tracy The book had its first publication in 2010 and presents tips to avoid procrastination, program your brain for action and fight for the realization of what you have always dreamed of. 7. Not Nice - Book by Aziz Gazipura Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty... And Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, And Unapologetically Being Yourself 8. Relationship Goals - Michael Toad Relationship Goals offer a blueprint for developing long-lasting relationships with your friends, your spouse, and God. Michael shares his own experiences of heartache and healing; Michael Todd examines common obstacles in modern relationships and gives tips for overcoming them. 9. Super Life - Book by Darin Olien In Superlife, Darin Olien provides us with an entirely new way of thinking about health and well-being by identifying what he calls the life forces: Quality Nutrition, Hydration, Detoxification, Oxygenation, and Alkalization 10. The Purpose Driven Life - Book by Rick Warren The Purpose Driven Life is Christian pastor Rick Warren's answer to the burning question that we all have about why we're here and explains God's five purposes for your life and how you can realize and live each of them by going on a 40-day spiritual journey. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/michael-kaagee-mante/message

Torah 82: Rabeinu teaches us how staying silent out of love when being embarrassed subdues the 3 husks and allows the husk of Nogah to be included within holiness. Rabeinu also explains that staying silent when being embarrassed with the intention of embarrassing your friend actually brings the 3 husks into the realm of impurity. Rabeinu discusses the secret mediations behind taking a hot shower and cutting one's nails on Friday afternoon, circumcision, the Chashmal, and other lofty ideas. Torah 83: Rabeinu teaches us an awesome idea behind giving charity in secret/anonymously and how this is able to redeem the sparks of holiness from the control of the impure husks…

You probably don't think of the Internet as an actual place but it really is – sort of. All of our computers have to connect to each other somewhere – and there is a place where that happens. And that place has a particular smell to it. This episode begins with an explanation. Source: Andrew Blum author of the book Tubes (https://amzn.to/3pwX3Jq). It is hard to argue with nice. Being nice to other people in generally regarded as a good thing. But you can also be TOO nice – which can cause a lot of trouble. Aziz Gazapura used to be one of those people and he is now on a mission to help people stop being too nice. Listen as he reveals what the problem is, what it does to you and how to be nice – without being too nice. Aziz is the author of the book, Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty… And Start Speaking Up, Saying No, Asking Boldly, And Unapologetically Being Yourself (https://amzn.to/3K6KqhA) It is often said that you can negotiate anything. Still, most of us are usually not willing to try and bargain on retail items – but perhaps we should. And here to explain how to do it is Emily Hunter. Emily is an associate professor of management at Baylor University's Hankamer School of Business, where she teaches negotiation and conflict management. https://business.baylor.edu/directory/?id=Emily_M_Hunter Even though cars breakdown unexpectedly, the fact is that it happens it is likely because of one of just a couple of reasons. If you know what they are you may be able to prevent the breakdown or atleast know what to check for and how to fix it. Listen and I'll explain.. www.roadsidesurvival.com PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS! Do you shy away from asking for things that you want because you're afraid that it will be viewed as selfish? Many of us feel guilty and don't ask for things that we really want (such as time away from the kids or even spending money on something that is just for us) because we are afraid that we are being so selfish. In this episode we will be discussing what causes that stress and guilt when we want something that can be defined as “selfish”, ask if being selfish is actually a bad thing, and walk you through how to go after and really ask for what you want. This is part I of a 2-episode series on setting boundaries. In this episode, Amina and I discuss what boundaries are, how to define your own boundaries, communicate them and maintain them, as well as techniques on how to say "no" and how to clearly communicate your needs with others in your life. Are my boundaries loose, rigid or flexible? What are the three main types of boundaries, and how can I assess these boundaries in my life? What is the difference between emotional dumping and venting? How do I communicate boundaries, say "no" to others and tell others how I feel and what I want/need without hurting them or second guessing myself? How do I deal with any backlash if it takes place? These and other questions are explored in this episode.References used and resources mentioned in this episode:- How To Do The Work by Dr. Nicole LePera- No More Mr. Nice Guy by Dr. Robert Glover- Ross Rosenberg's videos on codependency- Not Nice: Stop People Pleasing, Staying Silent, & Feeling Guilty... The Work in Sports Podcast - Insider Advice for Sports Careers
Hey everybody, I'm Brian Clapp VP of Content and Engaged Learning at WorkInSports.com and this is the Work In Sports podcast.I have some pretty big news before we get into today's sports industry question -- We have completely overhauled our site WorkInSports.com!Background -- since 1999 we've been the leader for jobs in the sports industry, but as times change we have to be agile and adjust our approach. That's one of the benefits of being a small, family-run, company - we can make decisions and act on them quickly, not a lot of red tape. You may not know this - but WorkInSports is 10 people. That's right, we're not some huge media conglomerate, we are 10 scrappy people trying to change sports employment.Another cool stat about our business -- we added Jesus Guzman last year at this time to our staff as a front end developer, Jesus is awesome and has been instrumental in this relaunch, but my point for bringing this up… of the ten people on staff, Jesus is the rookie with 1 year on the WIS team. I am the next newest employee and I've been here for seven years. The rest of the staff has been with Work In Sports for 14 years plus. That is unheard of! But again, good people, good environment, good products… people stick around.Ok, so what is the big news -- I'll get off my tangent and get back to the news -- we set out with a mission to be less of a list of jobs and more of an interaction hub between sports employers and sports job seekers - more connectivity, more interaction. And we are there. For a while, free members will still see the old site. All paid members and employers will see the new product. Couple of highlights to feature:Our matching technology is way ramped up - upload resume. When we post new jobs, active search through the databaseWhen you see a job you like, give it a thumbs up Sports selectFor employers, we have a ton of new tools -- all geared toward helping you find the right candidates efficiently. No more pushing through 1,000 resumes of unqualified people. We have THE sports resumes, and when you post a job with us, we will actively match your needed skills against our database of candidates. There are many other tools for employers we have developed I won't get into them all here. But if you are an employer and want a new way to find the most talented people for your roles -- reach out to me, and we'll schedule a demo of the new products -- bclappworkinsports.com.We're excited -- and we are in active beta right now, so if you play around and have feedback - share it with us so s we can continually improve. And remember a premium membership with WorkInSports.com is more valuable than ever… and it keeps me employed! So check it out!Ok, on to today's sports career-focused question… “Hey Brian, this is William from Chicago, I know yours is not a political podcast but I respect your opinion and wanted to talk about what is currently happening in the world today. The company I work for in the sports industry, who I love to work for, has been completely silent about the George Floyd murder, the protests and the support of the black community -- this really, really bothers me. But I don't know what to do about it. Any ideas how I can speak up respectfully, and not lose my job?”William - this is an intense question and I want to give it the respect it deserves. First I'd like to start with a story about voice. Last year in January interviewed Vincent Pierson who at the time was the Director of Diversity and Inclusion for Minor League Baseball. It is one of my favorite podcasts to date, and Vincent and I have remained in touch afterward. He's incredible. The FIELD program was an initiative that Vincent was highly involved in, and showed great progress toward diversity and inclusion for Minor League Baseball. I'll read directly from their site to explain what the FIELD program is: Minor League Baseball's 'Fostering Inclusion through Education and Leadership Development' (FIELD) Program was created under...

As a white woman from Iceland, I will never understand what it means to be black. Living in Europe my whole life, I've also not been exposed to racism the same way as someone living in the United States. But I choose to speak up nonetheless. In this episode, I want to talk about speaking up versus staying silent when it comes to black lives matter, and why this concerns you, too. “Racism is like a virus: It can be invisible until somebody gets killed.”- Sigrun What you will get out of this episode: What is Black Lives Matter (6:22) My message to those who say it isn't their problem (18:04) My message to those who don't want to mix business with politics (20:22) My message to those who want to speak up but are scared to say the wrong thing (22:20) Black Lives Matter: Why You Should Speak Up The level of systematic racism that exists in the United States is incomprehensible. Every citizen should be able to trust the government and the police, but in the United States, black people can trust neither. The first step to solving any problem is to acknowledge that there is one. The United States has a serious problem with racism, but other countries aren't innocent either. The question is, do you speak up, or do you stay silent? Yesterday I spoke to my group coaching and mastermind clients and some said they didn't want to mix business with politics. Some said that this is not their problem, and others said that it was affecting them deeply. To those who say that this isn't their problem I want you to imagine that this is World War II, and you knew that Jews are being killed in Germany. You live in the US and whatever you say or won't say wouldn't do any harm to you. Would you speak up or would you stay silent, knowing that Jews are being killed? Listening to black people, you're either a racist or anti-racist. Which one are you? To those who say they don't want to mix business and politics It helps me to think of racism in the context of sexism. I get furious when I think about the discrimination women had to endure over centuries and are still experiencing. I decided at the age of 16 to make gender equality my mission, and therefore equality is one of my company values. Your business isn't separate from you. Your values are your company values. When COVID-19 started, we saw some business owners step up and lead while others were quiet and pretended that it was business as usual. Ask yourself this question: Do you respect someone who takes the lead, or someone who takes the backseat? Who are you going to buy from when all of this is over? The business owner who gave you extra resources and helped during the virus, or the entrepreneur who pretended everything is the same as before, and ignored your fears and worries? By becoming a business owner, you've decided to lead, whether you like it or not. By building an online business you've decided to be visible. People see what you do, and what you don't do. Saying that you do everything behind the scenes is not visible for those who need to see it. It means you're not publicly taking a stand. In an earlier episode, I interviewed Jenny Fanig, a coach with strong values like myself. This is her quote: As coaches, we have the responsibility to use the platforms we have been given. We have a responsibility to speak about things that are wrong with this world. If you aren't willing to use your platform to take a stand, you don't deserve a platform. To those who want to speak up but are scared to say the wrong thing: You have a voice for a reason. Use it. Saying something is better than nothing. People will criticize you anyway so rather be criticized for speaking your truth. Be humble and willing to listen and learn. A simple recipe goes like this: I hear you. I see you. I feel you. I'm with you. And I will do better. What's happening right now has been a wake up call for so many, including myself. I realised that I can do more, and will do more. I can speak up. I can educate myself. I can listen and learn. And I can influence change. All of us can do something and something is better than nothing. Wherever you are in the world, whatever you do, just do your part. You can be a part of the problem or the solution. It's your choice. I'm choosing to speak up, because silence is violence. Susan writes, “Hi Susan. I want say a big thank you to you first. I had a big awakening experience after I watched your videos. I allowed people who I loved to walk over my feelings, devalue me, and I'd always forgive them. I suffered and kept quiet. I decided to walk away from the guy that I'd been dating for a year who kept hurting my feelings. A question: how to become a receiver rather than always being a giver?” For more information please visit my website at http://www.susanwinter.net/
