Cindy Wilson returns to the podcast to discuss this amazing episode Check out Cindy’s newest book, We Suffered Much: Charles Wood Irish and the Dakota Territory Railroad Survey of 1879-1881 https://www.amazon.com/We-Suffered-Much-Territory-1879-1881-ebook/dp/B0D3S7ZTMH Episode: The Empire Builders (Season 9, Episode 9) Air Date: November 22, 1982 Writer: John T. Dugan Director: Joseph Pevney IMDb Rating: 7.5/10 In The Empire Builders, Walnut Grove buzzes with excitement over a new railroad depot, promising jobs and growth. However, the Minneapolis and Western Railroad, led by Spencer Hollingsworth, plans to seize farmers' lands, including Almanzo Wilder's and John Carter's, via eminent domain. Initial enthusiasm sours as the town realizes the cost: evictions and a rowdy railroad camp complete with a saloon. Almanzo and Carter, backed by Isaiah Edwards, resist, facing threats from railroad enforcer Wilkins. Laura rallies the women to join the men in a standoff at Carter's farm, while surveyor Hobson proposes rerouting the tracks through Tracy. The community's united front forces Hollingsworth to relent, sparing Walnut Grove. The episode, a blend of drama and defiance, showcases the power of collective resistance against corporate overreach, with Laura's fiery leadership and Carter's final triumph underscoring the town's love for their land. Some Quotes I Chose “Money won't buy happiness, but you can look for it in fancier places.” “Property is property. What we own is what we work and sweat for.” “What we own is a part of us.” “This land… It's part of us now.” “I'm a lot tougher than you think, Mr. Wilder.” “This is our land, and we fight for it together.” The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. Christina returns to the podcast to revisit this episode with me – I hope you enjoy it! Divorce, Walnut Grove Style Season/Episode: Season 7, Episode 7 Air Date: November 10, 1980 Writer: Don Balluck Director: Michael Landon In Little House on the Prairie's “Divorce, Walnut Grove Style,” newlyweds Laura and Almanzo Wilder face marital strife that spirals into comedic chaos. Laura, overwhelmed as a schoolteacher, serves watery stew and neglects household chores, irking Almanzo. Their bickering escalates when Laura misinterprets a note—“My Only Love… Brenda Sue Longworth”—as proof of Almanzo's affair with an old friend, Brenda Sue, who's actually just celebrating her published song. Jealousy drives Laura to a public brawl with Brenda Sue and a dramatic exit to her parents' home, fueled by Harriet Oleson's gossip. Charles and Caroline urge reconciliation, but Laura's stubbornness persists until Almanzo clarifies the note's innocent meaning. The couple reconciles, vowing better communication, while Charles' ongoing struggle with a picture window adds humor. This episode, directed by Michael Landon, blends sitcom-style misunderstandings with heartfelt lessons about trust and love in marriage. Some Quotes chosen by me: “I'm doing the best that I can! Why can't you understand that?” (Laura) “Because all I understand is I work hard all day, I come home to a half-cooked meal and a house I can't sing in because you've turned it into a library!” (Almanzo) “There's just no excuse for a husband to call his wife stupid.” (Charles) “You know, I just can't get over that boy calling my daughter stupid…” (Charles) The opening song “Albert” is written and performed by the amazing Norwegian band, Project Brundlefly and is used with permission. Today we speak with Dean Butler, who has written the book PRAIRIE MAN: My Little House Life & Beyond. Dean is an actor, producer, and director best known for his role as Almanzo Wilder in Little House on the Prairie, based on the beloved Little House book series written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. He was a producer for NBC Golf's Emmy-nominated series Feherty for over ten seasons. An iconic and heartwarming television show, Little House on the Prairie—and its cast—remains beloved by millions. Dean Butler considers the role Almanzo to be one of the greatest gifts of his life, and now, he's ready to tell the story of his Prairie. Cast at twenty-two years old, Butler had no idea of the lasting impact being cast in Little House on the Prairie would have on him. Having previously starred in Judy Blume's Forever with Stephanie Zimbalist, Butler was fresh- faced and naïve to Hollywood, eager to make his mark. He found his home in the Prairie and embraced his fellow cast members as family. Butler's passion for honest-to-goodness entertainment began in the Prairie and followed him throughout his rich career of acting, producing, and directing. PRAIRIE MAN: My Little House Life & Beyond shares the behind-the-scenes of Little House on the Prairie on a heartfelt journey of “good luck, good television, and the very good— if gloriously imperfect—people who made it so.” Cast as Almanzo, Laura Ingalls' starring love interest, Butler captured the enduring affection of fans and co-stars alike. With a foreword from Melissa Gilbert (Laura) and Alison Arngrim (Nellie), this uplifting memoir follows Butler's journey from childhood to the Prairie and beyond. The book will be released on June 24, 2024 and available for pre-order now, though, Dean enthusiastically encourages readers to purchase it from their local book store. www.deanbutler.com @officialdeanbutler https://littlehouseontheprairie.com/prairie-man-my-little-house-life-and-beyond/

Every hero STARTS as a CHILD, and every Child can CHOOSE to become a Hero... Just like THIS one!Laura was a young pioneer girl in the late 1800s. She was born on February 7, 1867 and was the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ingalls. Life was very hard for the Ingalls family. Winters were especially harsh, and the Ingalls family had many sad times. But in spite of the hardships, Laura's family was very close, and they loved each other very much. When Laura grew up, she became a school teacher, and life began to be a little easier for her. Later, she moved to Missouri and went to work as a journalist for a newspaper in St. Louis. She also got married to a man named Almanzo Wilder, and she became Laura Ingalls Wilder. Laura had always loved writing, and soon she decided to write a book. It was called little House in the Big Woods followed by several more “Little House” books. They were all about her own family when she was a child. But she didn't just write about how hard life was. She wrote mostly about happy moments like taking a buggy ride into town, swimming in the creek, and listening to her father play his fiddle late at night. Even though she lived a long time ago, Laura Ingalls Wilder still brings joy into the hearts of everyone who reads her books, or watches the television show called “Little House on the Prairie” which is based on her books. Yes, Laura Ingalls Wilder, the little pioneer girl, grew up to become a HERO. That's what I know about the beginning of This Hero, and I know that YOU Can Be a Hero TOO! Dear Parents, After years of development, trial, and revision, we are so excited to now share with you the most effective version yet of our Proactive Bully Prevention Program that has proven to "change the culture" at hundreds of campuses across America in profound ways. Research has shown the TCN Method™ to be the single most effective school based Violence and Bully Prevention Intervention of its entire genre. We have hundreds of testimonials from educators describing the results they have gotten, and you can view many of these at http://www.thecharacternetwork.org/Testimonials (www.TheCharacterNetwork.org/Testimonials) This program, The Beginning of a Famous Hero™ is used in conjunction with a companion program called Bully Alert!™ in schools played over the intercom during morning announcements twice or more each school week, and backed up by a common culture which reinforces the principles taught, at every turn, and incorporates the phrases of the academic language during any teachable moment. These two sets of stories work together to convey a common academic language which says, “A bully is a person who hurts others on purpose (even if it's just hurting their feelings) but a HERO is a person who HELPS others. So CHOOSE to be a HERO by HELPING instead of a bully by hurting.” They also promote the concept of POSITIVE PERSONAL VISION, helping each student to realistically visualize his or her own "Future Self," and in doing so help... Wendy McClure has visited nearly every Laura Ingalls Wilder-related site in the US as part of her research for her book, The Wilder Life: My Adventures in the Lost World of Little House on the Prairie. From Pepin, Wisconsin (the Big Woods) to Walnut Grove (the setting of the Little House TV series) to Burr Oak, Iowa (a lost chapter in Ingalls family history), Wendy has seen it all. She's visited dugouts and lean-tos and even Almanzo Wilder's boyhood home in upstate New York. Kathy also discusses her recent literary tourism pilgrimage to the Laura Ingalls Wilder Historic Home and Museum in Mansfield, Missouri, the home of Laura, Almanzo and Rose and the place where the books were written. Kathy and Ines were thrilled to expound upon their love of the Little House books with a kindred spirit. They also discuss their love for the Little House on the Prairie TV show, including the more over-the-top episodes (anyone else remember the mime rapist?). Listen as Wendy busts some myths and shares some laughs and helps you decide once and for all: are you an Almanzonian or a non-Almanzonian? Subscribe to our monthly newsletter here. Dean Butler is known the world over as Almanzo Wilder from the NBC TV series Little House on the Prairie. Although he has moved on to other things, he has generously continued to be a supporter of Little House fandom appearing at homesites, events, and even conferences about Laura Ingalls Wilder. He also produced two documentaries on the Wilder family and a series of extras for one of the DVD releases. Butler last appeared on our show in 2014 in honor of the TV show's 40th anniversary event in Walnut Grove MN. This time he'll be talking about the second De Smet Event being held during July 2017. Both he and Alison Arngrim (TV's Nellie Oleson) will be speaking and signing autographs at the event. We've checked in with site director Tessa Flak and now we'll get more word on what to look forward to with Dean.

Music and song have long been a means for sharing these stories with younger generations, and today on HearSay Cathy Lewis will include our listeners in this rich oral tradition. You'll hear the rousing sounds of fife and drums and haunting ballads as Virginia historians share the stories and songs that bring our Commonwealth's history to life. Segment B: Pa's Fiddle: Dean Butler In this segment, we'll talk with actor, producer Dean Butler. Butler starred as Almanzo Wilder in the TV series "Little House on the Prairie" and has co-produced the PBS special, "Pa's Fiddle." He'll talk about "Little House" and the upcoming music special that features country stars, Randy Travis, Rodney Atkins, Ronnie Milsap, Ashton Shepherd, The Roys, Natalie Grant and Committed (NBC Sing Off Champions), and airs Sunday, June 10th at 8pm on WHRO-TV 15.
