On this episode of Vinyl Verdict, Bell, Jamie and Adam listen to Adam's next pick, Danny Brown's "Atrocity Exhibition". Released in 2016, it was his fourth studio album. Filled with haunting samples, sometimes grim themes and vocal style that critics described as ranging from 'agitated squawking' and 'dainty', the album has been described as "progressive rap". Critically lauded, including by Pitchfork - a publication that hates music - the album was named as one of the best of 2016. But will the boys hold it in the same esteem, or will it leave them "Lost" in a "Downward Spiral"? Come along and find out!
In this episode, We explore the fascinating world of J.G. Ballard's provocative works, what might later be known as Climate Fiction, written mostly last century. From his early novel "The Drowned World" to the controversial "Crash," we delve into how Ballard's dystopian visions have shaped the genre. We feature insights from a PBS show Hot Mess, a short BBC film Ballard appeared in 1973 exploring his experimental novel of linked short stories called “The Atrocity Exhibition,” and a 2006 South Bank Show interview. We discuss the psychological and societal impacts of Climate Fiction, and how it might inspire change in an era of environmental urgency. First we begin with a 2019 clip from Hot Mess from PBS, featuring Lindsay Ellis, of It's Lit, and Amy Brady, the editor-in-chief of The Chicago Review of Books. Hot Mess | The Rise of Climate Fiction feat. Lindsay Ellis & Amy Brady | Episode 35 | PBS https://www.pbs.org/video/the-rise-of-climate-fiction-feat-lindsay-ellis-amy-brady-2s2sxh/ The Atrocity Exhibition is J.G. Ballard's instruction manual on how to disrupt mass media and recontextualize technology in a dystopian landscape overrun with industrial waste and technological white noise. The excerpt is from a 1973 BBC film directed by Harely Cokliss and features Ballard talking about car crash fetishism and the response to the bleak modern landscapes dominated by industrial monotony and the irrational violence of the technology-infused world which would coalesce into his controversial novel Crash, published in 1973. https://youtu.be/QRxpZ142lkI?si=gh5FjzV9BrUvs-r0 The next clip is a 2006 interview of JG Ballard by Melvyn Bragg on the South Bank Show, which also features prominent British authors Will Self, Iain Sinclair, and Martin Amis. https://youtu.be/le0tW1y609w?si=2DeFYxI-wqGe-Cu8 For an extended interview and other benefits, become an EcoJustice Radio patron at https://www.patreon.com/ecojusticeradio Resources/Articles: https://wilderutopia.com/performance/literary/j-g-ballard-atrocity-exhibition-modernist-motorcar-dystopia/ James Graham Ballard who lived between 1930 and 2009 was an English novelist and short-story writer known for psychologically provocative works that explore relations between human psychology, technology, sex and mass media. Ballard's original climate fiction work from 1962 was the post-apocalyptic New Wave science fiction novel The Drowned World. He followed with the controversial 1970 short-story collection The Atrocity Exhibition, which includes the 1968 story "Why I Want to F- Ronald Reagan", and later the 1973 novel Crash (1973), a story about car-crash fetishists. In 1984, Ballard won broad critical recognition for the war novel Empire of the Sun, a semi-autobiographical story of the experiences of a British boy during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai;[4] three years later, the American film director Steven Spielberg adapted the novel into a film of the same name. From the distinct nature of the literary fiction of J. G. Ballard arose the adjective Ballardian, defined as: "resembling or suggestive of dystopian modernity, bleak man-made landscapes, and the psychological effects of technological, social or environmental developments." This week we're getting sloppy and erotic as we break down David Cronenberg's 1996 antithesis to the 90's erotic thriller, Crash, a movie about how people can't get off unless they're about to die horribly in a car accident. Adapted from J.G. Ballard's 1973 novel of the same name, which was an extension of his short story in the collection The Atrocity Exhibition, the film stars James Spader doing his best to look like making sweet, sweet love to a woman's leg wound is something he's really into. It also bring us Elias Koteas in his second appearance on the pod steaming up the windows with his menacing sexuality and Holly Hunter, taking the strange journey into the world of sexy death. Sound strange? Maybe more than a little off-putting? You have no idea. Listen to the episode for the full scope of the struggle.

Hello everyone! I am back, this time, with a particularly intense and chaotic book, which you can hopefully also judge whether you want to read it or not, it's JG Ballard's 1970 (Collection of essays? Stories? Novel?) The Atrocity Exhibition! A particularly scathing approach to contemporary American and, in general, neoliberal culture and the machinations of capital. In the episode with Kyle we go from the particularities of punk and technology, through the power of literature and connecting these cultural criticisms to a larger action in the world, to how we Historians behave and feel about it, and some of the most vile behaviours of capital in the present day via the worship of Reagan and the evil Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War. There's a lot to it! No wonder we accidentally chatted for nearly 2 hours! Have fun! Check out and support Kyle's work! Desiree discovers Detroit rapper Danny Brown's album Atrocity Exhibition, aka CeeLo and Andre 3000's lovechild. Produced by Hannah Hufford Photography by Edward Moore Design by Danny Arter
Detroit rapper Danny Brown embraced his unique hood/hipster personality, took full advantage of social media, and -- fueled by his experiences with drug dealing and drug-taking, as well as a wicked sense of humor -- has delivered some of the most vivid, vulgar, and side-splitting rhymes of his era. The eccentric's most notable releases include the Billboard 200 Top 20 entry Old (Fool's Gold, 2013) and the Warp-released albums Atrocity Exhibition (2016) and uknowhatimsayin¿ (2019), projects bolstered by production from the likes of Paul White, Oh No, Black Milk, the Alchemist, and Q-Tip. Brown eventually found a home at Fool's Gold, where he issued XXX, his highest-profile mixtape up to that point. At the end of 2012, Brown announced that the follow-up to XXX had been recorded. Originally titled ODB, it was continually pushed back by the label, with Brown tweeting in August 2013 that he would consider leaking the release. In October, the retitled album, Old, appeared with Paul White and Oh No among the producers, while A$AP Rocky and ScHoolboy Q contributed guest verses. A surprise hit, it entered the Billboard 200 at number 18. After he provided the theme for the U.S. television sitcom Fresh Off the Boat, Brown signed with Warp and made his label debut in 2016 with "When It Rain." The single's parent album, Atrocity Exhibition, was issued later in the year with White the principal producer, augmented by contributions from the Alchemist and Black Milk, among others. In October 2019, a couple of months after the debut of his Viceland talk show Danny's House, Brown returned with his second album for Warp, uknowhatimsayin¿, the majority of which was produced by Q-Tip.
Americký rapper z východní, tedy té chudší, části Detroitu patří k těm nejvlivnějším a nejzajímavějším rapovým hudebníkům posledního desetiletí.
On this episode of Newheads, Rav and Matt...make a lot of mistakes. It's fun. They also analyze Danny Brown's first album in three years, 'uknowhatimsayin¿,' placing it in the context of Danny's narrative arc. Once we’d finished our lengthy diversion into the Satanic territory of black metal, we thought we’d change direction entirely and cover another hip hop album. Cue Chris’ mild bemusement at such an alien genre. We briefly touched upon Danny Brown in our El-P episode, as he’d appeared on a Run the Jewels song, thus giving Mark his usual lazy nexus link. The truth is though, whilst David and Mark both immediately agreed upon this album when the suggestion of doing another hip hop was floated, further reflection on Danny Brown’s career proved troubling. Whilst both gents are fans of his work, Chris was left feeling cold due to the problematic (at best) content of some of the lyrics, particularly on earlier Danny Brown records. We reckon with all of that, wondering why such musical tropes are still acceptable today in the wake of the me too movement. It’s not all doom and gloom though; there’s a great deal of discussion around the sonic texture of the record, and why it stands apart not only in Danny Brown’s catalogue, but in hip hop as a whole. It’s a feisty, occasionally cantankerous, often insightful discussion around Danny Brown’s oeuvre and the language and register of hip hop as a whole. Is this Danny Brown’s best album? As ever, only you can decide.
Tom Sweterlitsch’s The Gone World (G.P. Putnam Son's, 2018) tells the story of Navy investigator Shannon Moss, who travels to the future to solve present-day crimes. The book opens with a brutal murder and a search for a missing girl, and maintains the pace of a chilling page-turner. But Sweterlitsch’s second novel is also an exploration of questions about consciousness, identity, and reality. The idea of using time travel to solve crimes emerged from a conversation the author had with his brother-in-law, a real-life special agent with the Naval Criminal Investigative Service. “A lot of his investigations are essentially solved when a victim or someone who knows a criminal tells the investigators what happens and why, but if people don’t talk, the investigation becomes very difficult and sometimes impossible to solve,” Sweterlitsch says. “And so [my brother-in-law] was musing that if he could go forward in time, he could talk to a lot of the witnesses after the emotions had cooled, and they might be more willing to talk.” Sweterlitsch gives Moss the ability to jump forward in time, but any future she visits is only a possibility, one of an infinite number of options. That means the clues she collects aren’t hard-and-fast truths; at best, they are hints that may (or may not) allow her to solve the crime. In the present, such futures are referred to as “Inadmissible Future Trajectories,” since the evidence they generate can’t be used to prosecute a case. The only certainty, as far as Moss and her fellow time-traveling agents are concerned, is the present—or “terra firma,” as they call it. The notion that the present is “solid ground” remains a cornerstone of Moss’s beliefs even as the case of the missing girl grows more complex and Moss’s trips to the future start offering more question than answers. Sweterlitsch introduces a host of fascinating concepts, such as “echoes”—duplicates brought from Inadmissible Future Trajectories who already exist in terra firma. “Thin spaces” are dangerous places where slivers of different times and places intersect, and “lensing” is the idea that a future trajectory is always warped by a time traveler’s psyche, much as dreams are shaped by the unconscious. Sweterlitsch has found inspiration in everything from Dante’s Inferno to J.G. Ballard’s The Atrocity Exhibition to Alfonso Cuarón’s film Children of Men. In the Inferno, “the punishment for the heretics is that they can see far off into the future but can’t see the present … And that was the perfect literary precedent for what I was hoping to write about in this novel in terms of the mechanism of time travel, but it also put the idea of heresy and belief into the book,” Sweterlitsch says. “A lot of characters express beliefs about the nature of the universe, but in almost all cases, those beliefs are proved incorrect by the novel itself… Reality around them is very slippery.” Rob Wolf is the host of New Books in Science Fiction and the author of The Alternate Universe and The Escape.

The award winning Atrocity Exhibition’s ninth performance will take you to hell. Katie “Dudders” caught up with Macabre Noir, Aaron Doctor Morose, and Lori Howsare “The Mad Muse” at Atrocity’s command center, aka Macabre’s living room. They talk about the creative process, theater theory, and Atrocity Exhibition IX: Inferno. Lori credits her theater education and experience for her ability to be such a successful stage manager Macabre and Aaron Doctor Morose discuss how the Atrocity Exhibition grew and matured with each new member that joined the family Through increased expectations from the audience and crew, the performance gets bigger and better every year Using technology to keep yourself on track Why “no pants and fire everywhere” would be an excellent tagline for Atrocity The creative process and how it’s enjoyable torture as opposed to pointy stick torture Lori discusses turning people back onto literature with her Literary Brothel, where you leave reality, enter a sacred space, and hear good stories Realizing that your own true story is a good story How theater helps promote empathy What is weird to you is someone else’s normal Lori explains how Atrocity is an example of theatre of cruelty, an academic theory of theatre. Cruelty is not violence; it is the ability to use visions that you’re not usually subjected to reach into the repressed, dark area of the human mind. It is an assault on the senses that heightens your emotions. Wearing your weird on the outside How Atrocity Exhibition creates a space for everyone 35 minute mark begins the conversation about Atrocity Exhibition IX: Inferno The importance of putting together artists that genuinely love their craft and trust each other to make something exciting Shout out to Zeke’s Coffee for creating the Atrocious Paradiso brew and providing coffee and snacks for the Atrocity Exhibition crew They appreciate everyone that donates to the Kickstarter. In this edition of delayed episodes, we discuss albums like Big Baby D.R.A.M., Danny Brown's Atrocity Exhibition, to Dave East's Kyrie Chanel. In 1995, 8-year-olds Melissa Russo and Julie Lejeune disappeared while playing in their neighbourhood in the south of Belgium. The following month, 17-year-old An Marchal and her 19-year-old friend Eefje Lambrecks disappeared on the north coast of the country while on a holiday with friends. There had been no sign of any of the girls, and their anguished families were without any answers. In mid-1996, 12-year-old Sabine Dardenne and 14-year-old Laetitia Delhez were abducted a month apart. Thanks to observant members of the public, police arrested unemployed electrician Marc Dutroux, his wife Michelle, and their accomplice Michel Lelievre for the abduction of Sabine. Unbeknownst to the Belgian public, Marc had already been convicted of raping 5 young women in the 1980s and had served prison time - but had been released well before the end of his sentence. Free to wander the street and do as he pleased, Marc took up where he'd left off. But this time, he made sure that at least 4 of his victims wouldn't live to tell the tale. In 1996, with Marc, Michelle and Lelievre in custody, it was only then that 40 year old Marc revealed to police that he was also holding Laetitia captive. She and Sabine had both been kept in a dungeon in the cellar of Marc's home, where they were repeatedly raped, but were thankfully rescued by police soon after. But Melissa, Julie, An, and Eefje were still missing. What investigators were about to uncover was something that pushed Belgians to the verge of revolt against their government. In June 1995, 8-year-old friends Melissa Russo & Julie Lejeune went for a walk to a park near their neighbourhood outside the Belgian capital city of Brussels. When they failed to return home, their parents reported their disappearance to police. But nothing came of any subsequent publicity or desperate TV appeals. It was as though the pair had vanished into thin air.2 months later, 17-year-old An Marchal & 19-year-old Eefje Lambrecks went out for the evening while on a Belgian seaside holiday with a group of friends. When the girls failed to return to their accommodation or make contact, the rest of their group knew something was very wrong. But local police failed to take the disappearance seriously. In the spring of 1996, 12-year-old Sabine Dardenne was riding her bike to school near the French-Belgian border. When Sabine failed to show up at school that day or return home, posters were distributed in the local area. But no one had seen hide nor hair of her.It wasn't until August that same year, when 14-year-old Laetitia Delhez disappeared while walking home from her local swimming pool, that things started to heat up in terms of a police investigation. Local police patrols around the country weren't aware of girls and young women going missing in other parts of Belgium, but one select police branch did. And a specific suspect was on their radar. Following witness tip offs, officers identified a man and brought him in for questioning. As he spoke to investigators, a horrifying story started to unfold. What the man had to tell police would rock Belgian law enforcement, the judiciary, and the very fabric of Belgian society and its people to the core for years to come.CW: suicide, sexual assault, child abuse, drug use, family violence-Visit us online at obscuracrimepodcast.com-Find us on all podcasting platforms: https://link.chtbl.com/obscura-Support Obscura on Patreon and unlock the exclusive Black Label episodes: www.patreon.com/obscuracrimepodcastSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/obscura-a-true-crime-podcast/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
