My guest today is an English fantasy author and champion of the video game industry. In 1975, while in his mid-twenties, he founded a boardgame company, Games Workshop, which soon caught the attention of the American creators of a new tabletop game, Dungeons and Dragons. My guest brokered a deal to sell D&D in the UK as a mail order company, and in 1977 opened the company's first retail shop in South London. In 1982 he published the first of the Fighting Fantasy books, which have now sold more than 20 million copies. He joined the video game industry and, at the publisher Eidos, helped bring the Tomb Raider and Hitman series to the world. In 2022 he was honoured with a knighthood for services to the games industry. “Play has always been seen as trivial,” he once said. “Yet when we arrive in this world, we all learn through play.” Welcome, Sir Ian Livingstone.Featuring clips from:Championship Manager (by Barry Leitch).Tomb Raider ( by Nathan McCree).Virtua Tennis (by Chiho Kobayashi). All other music by Simon Parkin. Today we're joined by industry legend Neil Biggin in an absolutely massive show! Neil regales us with hilarious stories as we cover a wide range of his electronic music during his time at Gremlin Graphics from about 1992-1996. He walks us through some memories of landmark events during the 16 and 32-bit eras: the launch of the CD32, the first days of the Playstation, and being at a company with one of the world's first motion capture studios. Neil Biggin began his career with Zool 2 on Amiga, and continued with games like the CD32 versions of Zool 1 and 2 and Top Gear 2, Top Gear 3000, the Actua (or VR) sports games, Loaded, Re-Loaded, a number of FIFA games from 1997-2000, and music porting duties for the Desert/Jungle Strike games. His earliest works are teeming with the lovely sounds of Rave and House music, but as his sound progresses he gets deeper into other genres like Metal, Jungle, Drum and Bass and much more. Whether you're new to his work or an old fan, Neil's music continues to sound great to this day. Neil is also in the process of re-releasing much of his music. Check out his Spotify as more gradually starts appearing over the coming months. He's also working on the latest iteration of the Amiga Immortal album series where Amiga legends like himself, Barry Leitch and many others come together to remaster their own works for modern audiences. Neil's Links: Spotify | SoundCloud | Twitter The kooky song that Neil was thinking of was indeed Martian Hop by the Ran-Dells, a kitsch classic that's still pretty entertaining today. Barry Leitch is mostly known for his compositions on the Top Gear racing game series, and more recently, Horizon Chase Turbo. But if you dive deep enough, you'll uncover a wealth of video game music magic from a man who was inspired by the greats of the C64 era. Starting out as a teenager, his earlier creations aren't as fondly remembered by the composer himself but the journey to how they became what they were is the path that we have taken on this interview. In this episode, Barry tells us all about working with the limitations of retro systems, the time a tiny TV made a massively negative impact on his Utopia SNES port and what it was like to cram big samples into tiny audio chips. He chats about what it was like working with other notable composer Dean Evans and the process he goes through to write music. Mike shares some ridiculous nostalgic memories regarding Gauntlet Legends, Justin shares a tale about his Rush 2 N64 experience and more on this in-depth interview with VGM Legendary composer, Barry Leitch!

From his music and sound for a string of popular racing games to his intriguing work on children's toys, we cover a lot of interesting ground. It was fantastic to have Barry on the show, and I hope we talk again soon! The theme for this week otherwise, though, is final bosses; main antagonists. Strong language warning! Gamasutra/Jesus Fabre had the number at around 250 but we've heard elsewhere that the legendary Barry Leitch has done over 400 (let that sink in) game soundtracks. He kindly gave up some of his free time to have this fascinating chat with our Adrian. We're not worthy!!! Fancy discussing this podcast? Fancy suggesting a topic of conversation? The third and final installment in Singing Mountain’s series on dance music in video games takes a detour into the wild world of the Amiga, and the many kinds of electronic genres that you can hear in its titles. Some of the music is very ‘80s, but other selections veer into more ‘90s-era techno. If you’ve never played a game on the Amiga, you’re missing out on some amazing work by western composers.
Funk Interlude by Dysfunction_AL (c) copyright 2016 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license.
Posibles spoilers de Final Fantasy XV, Beyond two souls, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, la saga Gears of Wars, Tomb Raider (remake), Assissin's Creed III y la saga Metal Gear Solid Las músicas usadas, por orden de aparición : Funk Interlude by Dysfunction_AL (c) copyright 2016 Licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution Noncommercial (3.0) license. Racing games in the 90s were a very important part of gaming history and culture. Games like OutRun, Top Gear, F-Zero, and the Lotus series brought us a formula that not only defined the genre but also inspired many of us growing up. Barry Leitch, the composer from many well-loved retro games, makes an incredible… Read More »
The gaming world has been playing Civilization-style simulation games for a long time and the genre has a long history of deep/enriching games that keep the player hooked for countless hours. Sadly, Utopia: The Creation of a Nation fell short of our simulation-theme nostalgia but totally hooked us with its incredible soundtrack. In the early… Read More »
Episode #158 - Tribute to Psygnosis, Part 2: Racing on top of the PSone Hello and welcome to part 2 of our journey through the beautiful sound universe of Psygnosis games. We're moving on and crossing the timeline when the boys and girls from Liverpool switched from Amiga to console gaming, especially the PlayStation. For example, they created WipEout, the first new media sensation which made video games interesting to a broader audience. This episode includes tunes from games which brought Psygnosis fame after their Amiga era has ended and before they lost their name to become Sony Studio Liverpool. Information about the unreleased music included here: Assault Rigs 2: "I did write some music for the sequel but the game eventually was dropped." (Stuart Duffield) Damij - Shoki: "The track 'Shoki' was from a 3D fighting game called 'Damij' (it was almost completed, but was dropped and ended up not being released). The track has some background noise - it was recorded using 8-track tape and hasn't been remastered at all." (Stuart Duffield) Drakan: "Here are some unused tunes from Drakan and Drakan 2 which I got kicked off a few months into it..." (Barry Leitch) BitFellas - there's some owlsome music in the air. Mixing by Vincenzo, logo #158 by KF, compiled by Bobic We say thank you to the following musicians, who made this episode possible: Tim Wright (CoLD SToRAGE), Barry Leitch, Stuart Duffield, Rik Ede and Mike Clarke.
We have a car themed show with music from my favourite car and racing video games (which I honestly don't have that many of). Driver Theme by Marc Canham (original by Allister Brimble) from Driver: San Francisco by Ubisoft Reflections; Theme by Barry Leitch from Super Cars II by Magnetic Fields; Here I Am by The Explosion from Burnout 3: Takedown by Criterion Games; and music from Speed Devils by Ubisoft Montreal.
In which I play some Irish music that was in a big budget videogame! Intro music by Barry Leitch from Lotus Turbo Challenge 2 by Magnetic Fields; Breakbt2 by Tom Bible from Judge Dredd: Dredd Vs. Death by Rebellion Developments; Just You And Me (And Ted E. Bear) by Jared Emerson-Johnson from Sam & Max Save the World: Episode 3: The Mole, the Mob, and the Meatball by Telltale Games; and The Best is Yet to Come by Rika Muranaka (sung by Aoife Ní Fhearraigh) from Metal Gear Solid by Konami.
Episode #136 - The Immortal Podcast Immortal 4 enriches the world of computer game music, featuring remixes of the music from 35 Amiga games in newly arranged studio productions (German Report at .deMOSZENE). BitFellas pays tribute to the fantastic Immortal project and presents a selection of fine music from the Immortal CDs in BitJam Podcast #136, including a previously unreleased track. The acclaimed “Immortal†project started to take shape in the mind of Portuguese game music composer Ruben Monteiro in 1997. The idea behind this project was (and still is) to release the greatest soundtracks from games released for the Commodore Amiga computer on CD - newly arranged and recorded in the studio, but not necessarily in a chart-compatible way. Instead, the “Immortal†producers aim to work with the original artists whenever possible: Chris Hülsbeck, Allister Brimble, Bjorn Lynne, Barry Leitch, Jason Page, Tim Wright and many others contributed exclusive tracks in the past. As of April 2011, four volumes have been released in the “Immortal†series, featuring music from classic games such as Shadow of the Beast, Turrican, Speedball 2, Pinball Dreams, Wing Commander, Alien Breed, Lemmings, or Cannon Fodder. Mixing by Vincenzo, logo #136 by KF & Immortal 4 artists, compiled by Bobic
We're back with more music! 22 years in the game industry, Hundreds of games.. Boatloads of toys.. One of the most prolific composers of the era. You have most likely heard his work. It's hard to avoid it. Even today a walk thru Wal-Mart finds at least a dozen items with audio by Barry. He's written more music on more formats that anyone else on the planet.. Mixing by Vincenzo, logo #47 by KF, compiled by Barry Leitch. Big big thank you goes to Sahkolihaa for his help!
Episode #41 - Barry's scene favourites Compiled by Barry Leitch, mixing by Vincenzo, logo #41 by KF Few people acknowledge how much the scene influenced the games of the era, and thus in turn the games influenced the scene. I've selected several pieces that over the years influenced me, pieces that I still have in my playlist and much to my wife and kids dissapointment play in the car. With such a wealth of material to pick from, a bank so much richer than the mainstream, please consider omissions merely due to my lack of space.
Episode #40 - ExoticA ExoticA brings you a podcast with a selection of tracks from the ExoticA website. Including some popular game tunes as well as some more exotic musical delights. Compiled by BuZz and XtC. Mixing by Vincenzo and XtC, jingles by Barry Leitch, ne7 and Buzzer, logo #40 by KF
