Breaststroke specialist Roderick Sewell Jackson has faced challenges his entire life. Born without tibia bones, his mother decided to have his legs amputated at age 1. Homeless at 7, his mom found Roderick the resources to improve his mobility which lead to him learning to swim by age 10 and finding the Challenged Athletes Foundation. With support of good friend Rudy Garcia-Tolson, Roderick became the first double above the knee amputee to finish the IRONMAN World Championship. His next goal is qualifying for the Paralympics 2021.   Show Sponsor: VENGA Thanks very much to Venga CBD for helping make the show possible. He was born with the tibia bones missing in his legs. His mother decided to have his legs amputated at age one to improve his mobility. The cost of affording his prosthetic legs was so high it led to the family leaving their home when he was age seven and enduring several years of homelessness, before settling in Birmingham, AL, United States of America, with the help of friends and other family. Because of a tough childhood, Sewell was forced to live homeless in San Diego. When he became involved with the Challenged Athletes Foundation, an organization that helps to provide disabled athletes with a path to success as well as running legs, his life quickly changed for the better.. He won gold in his international debut at the 2014 Para Pan Pacific Championships in Pasadena. He learned how to swim by his coach and mentor, Alan Voisard, at the Mission Valley YMCA in San Diego when he was ten years old. Running in the first ultra-distance event of her career, Linden shattered the previous record of 3:07:20 that Great Britain’s Aly Dixon set in 2019 at the 50K world championships in Romania. After getting ahead of Dixon’s record pace right from the start, she never looked back, and Linden’s final time worked out to an average pace of 3:36 per kilometre. Lionel Sanders, Skye Moench take IRONMAN 70.3 Texas titles This excerpt from the story on the Tri227 site - Womens: Moench, who won the memorable IRONMAN European Championship, Frankfurt as Sarah True faded in the final stages in the heat ran a strong 1:20:43. While that gave up more than five minutes to the speedy feet of Jeanni Metzler (RSA), it was enough to take the win. Sophie Watts (USA) completed the podium, ahead of Heather Jackson and Morrison, who finished the day in fifth. Mens: Sanders held strong at the front over the second half of the run too, clocking a 1:11:11 half marathon and a winning margin of just over a minute, from Ben Kanute who battled Sam Long all through the run, making the pass in the last half mile to reach the line just five seconds ahead of the fast-improving youngster. Neither could relax, with Matt Hanson’s best of the day 1:09:16 leaving him just nine seconds short of a podium finish. How many pros have recently been on the show and then gone on to win his or her next race? Skye Moench, yes TX 70.3 Matt Hanson, yes Daytona Chris Leiferman, IM FL Sam Long   What's New in the 303: From Galveston To Cherry Creek, CO Triathletes with Some Big Smiles and Fast Finishes; Betsy Mercer Overcomes 2019 DNF for 4th Colorado triathletes raced this weekend, in Texas and Colorado. In Galveston Texas, not only did the Colorado pros make a big impact, but one well known age grouper, Betsy Mercer raced in redemption of her 2019 attempt in Galveston where she was stopped 100 yards from the finish line because of weather. At Cherry Creek State Park, The Barking Dog Duathlon kicked off the multi-sport season with about 150 athletes racing. Betsy finished fourth in her age group but cried at the finish line, not because she finished, but because her friend Michael Jones finished his first 70.3. Said Betsy, “I didn’t cry this time when I crossed the finish line, I cried when Michael did. That’s the beauty of triathlon, the community you’re a part of.” Ride or Die, a Women’s Cycling Movement Matt Miller, owner of BASE Performance invited me to ride last Saturday, not an uncommon invitation as we have ridden many times. I had sort of decided to do a different ride in Denver. But Matt, said I might want to make the effort as there could be as many as 80 people riding, some from the BASE team and this new group he is sponsoring called Ride or Die. Of course I was intrigued. As it turned out the groups left at different times and when the BASE team left the other group hadn’t arrived. Three hours later upon my return, the parking lot at BASE headquarters was filled with women cyclists all buzzing from a ride. Some were friends of mine who I had no idea would be there. There was a cooler of drinks and prizes and swag and I felt a fun energy. I asked my friend Becky Furuta, no stranger to the peloton from the highest levels about what I was seeing. I know they had ridden some gravel, and some road. I saw bikes of all sorts. I didn’t know anything about this group. Becky described it as, “grassroots racing and riding, the goal is fun and camaraderie without all the staunchness and elitism that’s driving people away from the road. There’s a sense of community and fun absent the usual rivalries. I think that’s really the point of these beginner/community rides – not that they’re easy or for beginners, but that they’re accessible at every level and focused on mixing training with fun and a social component. It’s a sustainable model, and I hope it sticks around.” PRIMAL & 303 Endurance Indoor Cycling Class, led by Bill Plock Date: Every Wednesday till it warms up Time: 12:00 Noon MST Price: FREE Place: ZOOM (Click Here) ZOOM Passcode: H49LJK Join The Ride Video of the Week: 2019 IRONMAN World Championship: Roderick Sewell   Upcoming Interviews: Michael Murphy is a motivational speaker, paralyzed athlete, and writer. A professional triathlete for 12 years, Lisa is now making the shift to elite ultra trail running and other endurance events. She already has 2 wins and 1 course record under her belt. Lisa is known for her consistency, strength, perseverance, 'can do' and 'never give up' attitude.  She is a relentless presence with closing run speed and persistence to the bitter end, never letting the competition feel content.  She attributes this perseverance after experiencing a turning point in her family life when, at age 11, Lisa's father was in a swimming accident that left him quadriplegic. This experience and her father's positive approach to a devastating life change is part of her moral fiber that gives her endless positivity and willingness to push through.  Lisa started a landscape design consulting business in 2008, in a time that many thought was foolish. She forged on, powered by her belief that her clientele was looking for change and she could provide that.  It turned out to be a bold, successful move. Lisa truly believes in community, integrity and giving back.  She is a regular at local events - either competing or volunteering. When not racing, Lisa enjoys travelling, baking, landscape design and overzealous home improvement projects. She has taught bicycle safety classes as a League Cycling Instructor, assists at local events and takes a great interest in helping people of all ages lead active, healthy lifestyles.  She is open, approachable, kind, hard-working, tireless, fair and is a fierce friend. I had the privilege of interviewing him, and learning more about his passion for the sport of triathlon and his desire to "do good" in all areas of his life. Some points we discuss:-Triathlon teaches us to not quit when things get hard-Being on a team is a great way to get support and elevate you game-Finding ways to "do good" by being involved in the community, charities, serving family and team family in the best ways possible-Triathlon helps us rediscover the "kid-like" feeling again-Making lemonade out of lemons when racing and in life-Remember what matters most and keep priorities straightThere are so many great take away. I feel so grateful to be on a team with such diversity and strength. In part 1 of a 2 part series, I take a look at one of the two most likely underlying causes of cramping; electrolyte imbalances. We started last week's show with the statement "if you are in your mid forties and think your best years are behind you, think again" as we introduced Matt Fitzgerald and his story of living out a dream to train and race with a professional running team to find every bit of potential he had in his 46 year old body. We start this weeks show with the statement "if you are in your mid sixties and think your best years are behind you, think again". At the age of 62 and at 335 pounds Sue Reynolds started a journey that started with a walk to a neighbors house and back. Step by step, goal by goal, she discovered running and then triathlon and completely transformed her body and life. At the age of 67 she has completed 5 seasons of triathlon and has been to 4 world championships. Sponsor UCAN: I've been talking the last couple of weeks about the "Keep Moving with UCAN" series on UCAN's Instagram Live. I told you that my 20 year old daughter and I have done the 20min HIIT sessions with American Ninja Warrior Chris Poirier Kim - total ass kicking. Last week they also had Hunter Allen leading a 30min "Pyramid of Power" cycling session, and a discussion with Greg McMillan about 5 tips to adapt your run training during this unique time. There are more UCAN Instagram Live streams so follow them @genUcan. Matt Bach from UCAN and Heidi Strickler had a webinar last night that was very educational. I highly recommend you check it out. It talks about the science, how to prepare, how to use for different distances. Heidi even says there's a great pancake recipe out there using UCAN. https://attendee.gotowebinar.com/recording/5174166886676091149   I'm working in the "man cave" on conference calls for hours at a time and need to keep up my energy and focus. Coffee gets old, I never drink soda, and won't drink a traditional sports drink unless training. One thing I love about UCAN is that unlike sugary sports nutrition, UCAN can be used outside of training too since the bars and powders provide healthy, steady energy with little to no sugar. I go to UCAN energy drink or a UCAN bar to keep my hunger satisfied and carry me through a daily marathon of meetings to keep me energized and productive. My favorite bar is the coffee flavor, but they have two new flavors - chocolate/almond butter and salted peanut butter which have been a hit.   Hey, since you are not racing, this is a great time to experiment with new nutrition in your training, something that is completely different than other sports nutrition out there. No problem. You can still keep your stroke sharp without access to the water Training for a triathlon during a global pandemic becomes an even taller task, especially for swimmers who don’t have access to their local pools with most gyms and public pools shut down due to shelter-in-place mandates around the country. Maurya Couvares, an assistant coach for the Wagner women’s triathlon team in Staten Island, New York, is one of many swimmers who has been forced to get creative in the comfort of her own home while Olympic-sized swimming pools are not an option. “Without a pool, swimmers can use stretch cords to continue working on swim-specific muscular endurance and fitness,” Couvares said. “Typically stretch cord workouts can be much shorter than a pool workout — anywhere from 5-25 minutes depending on fitness level and experience. Workouts can be structured as a short warm-up followed by a set of 'on' and 'off' intervals (for example, moving your arms as you would in freestyle swim for 30 seconds, taking 30 seconds off, then repeating 10 times). When using stretch cords it's important to remember the key technical part of each swim stroke. For freestyle, keeping a high elbow catch at the front of the stroke is important -- so make sure you do that while using stretch cords too.   Video of the Week: Ride Solo with the Colorado Classic 303 Garage Talk #2: Colin Laughery   Upcoming Interviews: Matt Miller from BASE Performance talking about a number of topics including the IRONMAN purchase, being a guide for blind athletes and the COVID-19 impact on the sports nutrition business.   Closing: Please support our sponsors. If you are in your mid seventies and think your best years are behind you, think again. USA Triathlon, IRONMAN U Collaborate on First-Ever Coaching Education Partnership USA Triathlon and IRONMAN U today announced a first-of-its-kind partnership that will enable multisport coaches in the USA Triathlon Coaching Certification Program to earn USA Triathlon Approved Continuing Education Units (CEUs) by completing the IRONMAN U online coach certification course. The USA Triathlon Coaching Certification Program was established in order to provide aspiring coaches with the tools to develop athletes effectively, help them set and reach their goals in multisport, and maintain safe environments for training and racing. The program also enables coaches nationwide to network and share best practices through in-person and online clinics and educational events. The USA Triathlon coach development pathway starts with an online learning course called Foundations of USA Triathlon Coaching, then progresses through increasingly advanced coach certifications to educate and support triathlon coaches of all levels. Joining us today is American Pro Triathlete Rachel Olson who is from Houston, Texas that grew up as a competitive swimmer and eventually found herself in triathlon in 2013. Now in 2013 she was given an old Quintana Roo Tri Bike to race in triathlon and she came away with a win in her first sprint triathlon and knew it was the right sport for her. In 2014 Rachel made the move to the 70.3 distance and in 2018 started racing professionally and since then; has never looked back! Rachel has yet to jump to the full IRONMAN Distance much like previous guest Jackson Laundry; which is excellent because much like most listeners; they are focusing heavily on the 70.3 distance so who better to ask questions and learn from then the pro athletes that master that distance themselves. In today’s episode we’ll recap her 2019 season and we’ll chat about whats ahead in the year 2020 for racing. Rachel has one amazing bike setup so we dive into the details of her setup and components which is super helpful for listeners if they want to learn about the smaller details of a tri bike and watts savings like the 51 speedshop aerobars, the oversized rear derailleurs from Kogel, wheel selection and more. We also hear about her Base Performance on-course nutrition strategy for a 70.3 course, understanding an ironman 70.3 training structure, mindset training using visualization and more. I Wont take up anymore of your time here! Get ready to learn, and enjoy.

In this episode of the Pursuit of the Perfect Race, I talk with my athlete and friend Richie Szeliga about his race at the Boston Marathon. He talks about the mindset going into such a daunting race with terrible weather. Richie also goes over his nutrition plan and his plan for clothing during the race. But most importantly the mental game during the race itself. He talks about the confidence of how hitting good splits can change your attitude and make the little voices go away. The crowds in Boston were in full effect in the rain. No weather can hold the residents of Boston inside. Richie talks about some added carbs at the bottom of Heartbreak Hill. In the end he walks away with a Personal Record for the Boston Marathon Course.-Enjoy the show.
