Eli first met Brendan Boyle when Brendan was his instructor in the undergraduate Product Design program at Stanford, where Brendan has taught for many years. Brendan is also a toy inventor, and one of the assignments in his class was to design a toy—now that Eli has kids, he realizes how bad his toy project was, which made Brendan's justified criticism of his idea that much more bearable. Brendan, however, has a unique gift for retaining the curiosity and playfulness that has made so many of his toy designs successful. We spoke with Brendan about the importance of play in the creative process, testing new toy concepts with kids, how decoupling innovation and metrics can create judgment-free creativity, what's wrong with LEGO today, and the eternal optimism that drives inventors. Find bonus content, a transcript and more on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/brendan-boyle Bio Brendan Boyle is a toy inventor at Fuse London, Adjunct Professor at Stanford University's d.School, and the Founder of the IDEO Play Lab. He believes that play is the key to innovation and has spoken to creative leaders, entrepreneurs, and students about the importance of playful exploration and risk-taking. He founded the Play Lab to uncover kid-centered solutions to the challenge of boredom. As Brendan says, "The opposite of play is boredom." Under his leadership, the Play Lab has invented and licensed hundreds of toys and apps, including the best-selling Jumperoo and Elmo Calls, respectively. Brendan also consults with companies about redesigning their organizational behavior to include space for play, wrote (and teaches) the Design for Play at Stanford's d.School, and co-authored the award-winning encyclopedia of never-before-seen inventions, The Klutz Book of Inventions. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This is a premium episode on Design Better. Sound is the unsung hero of interaction design. The iconic chorus you hear as you boot up your Mac, the double knock of an arriving Slack message, and the ascending notes Airpods make as they connect to a device all provide context and feedback without visual interactions. Without sound in our design toolbox, interacting with technology would be much more cumbersome. Connor Moore has helped companies like Tesla, Uber, Peloton, and Youtube shape their brand and enhance the user experience through sound design. Design has the potential to help us solve some of the world's most pressing problems. But few designers and entrepreneurs recognize that potential. Paul Lambert, co-founder and CEO of Quilt, sees design as a tool to drive the adoption of climate change mitigation technologies. That's why he's partnered with industrial designers Maaike Evers and Mike Simonian who are helping the team at Quilt rethink how we heat and cool our homes, a major contributor to the average home's carbon footprint. We spoke with Maaike, Mike, and Paul about how they approached the challenge of designing a process as well as a product, bringing fresh eyes to familiar problems, and how they collaborated with engineers to create a product that is both beautiful and highly functional. Collaborations include: Google, Sonos, Headspace, Haworth, Artifort, Incase, Belkin, Xbox, Blankblank, Council, Coalesse, Quilt, Steelcase, and the City of San Francisco. Hi folks! We hope your summer is going well. Aarron and I are traveling and spending some time with our families this week, so we thought we'd rewind to one of our favorite episodes, with Julie Zhuo. The episode came to mind because one of our listeners asked us what episodes we'd recommend to someone who is growing their team, and Julie's book The Making of Manager has a lot of helpful advice. Find the full episode, transcript, and more on our Substack: https://designbetterpodcast.com/p/rewind-julie-zhuo We also suggested Tony Fadell's episode to our listener…the inventor of the iPhone and iPod has some great tips about hiring people who are skilled but don't necessarily have the experience that ticks all the boxes of the posted job description. We first aired the interview with Julie back in 2019, when she was the VP of Product Design at Facebook. Since then, she's gone on to found her own company called Sundial, with the mission to help teams make faster, smarter decisions with data. Original episode description Listen as Julie Zhuo, former VP of Product Design at Facebook and author of The Making of a Manager, recalls some of her earliest professional experiences at one of the fastest growing companies on the planet. She reveals how she got her start and grew to be a highly influential design leader renowned for building top-notch teams. Julie talks about the difference between leading and managing, and shares personal examples that can help you advance your career. Bio Julie Zhuo started building products as employee ~100 at Facebook and went on to head up product design for the Facebook app for many years. She's kept a blog called The Looking Glass, about design, technology and leadership for much of that time. In 2019 she wrote a bestselling leadership book called The Making of a Manager. Currently, she's living the entrepreneurial journey with her start-up Sundial whose mission is to help teams make faster, smarter decisions with data. *** Premium Episodes on Design Better This ad-supported episode is available to everyone. Over the years, Eli spent a lot of time diving and doing photography—from designing underwater photography equipment, to running an underwater photography magazine in the early 2000's, to doing research work using towed underwater camera systems. There's an art to interviewing customers. It's so much harder than just asking a few people some questions. If we're not careful, bias can throw off our findings. In this week's episode of The Korea Pro Podcast, co-hosts Jeongmin and John are joined by Korea Pro's news trainee, Lina, for an engaging discussion on various topics. First, the trio delves into President Yoon Suk-yeol's recent visits to Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, where South Korea signed numerous critical minerals and energy agreements. They explore how these deals align with South Korea's strategy to reduce its dependence on China for critical minerals and how the country has been pursuing similar agreements with other regions. Next, they examine South Korea's 11th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand, which revealed a modest increase in the country's renewable energy target to 21.6% by 2030. The hosts discuss how this target compares to other Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development countries and the potential long-term trade disadvantages for South Korean businesses. In a bittersweet moment, Lina announces that the following week will be her last as a news trainee at Korea Pro. She reflects on her favorite and most challenging assignments, the valuable lessons she learned during her time with the team and her future plans. Looking ahead, the hosts discuss the ongoing doctors' strike in South Korea, with the Korean Medical Association planning a one-day general strike on Tuesday. They also touch on the government's plan to increase the number of medical professors by 1,000 and the challenges Yoon will face upon his return from Central Asia, including tensions with North Korea. Finally, they mention the upcoming trilateral military exercise, Freedom Edge, between the U.S., South Korea and Japan. About the podcast: The Korea Pro Podcast is a weekly 15-minute conversation hosted by Editorial Director Jeongmin Kim (@jeongminnkim) and Editor John Lee (@koreanforeigner), diving deep into the most pressing stories shaping South Korea — and dissecting the most complicated ones for professionals monitoring ROK politics, diplomacy, culture, society and technology. Hello and welcome back to the show! It's Doone here, your host and hype girl. Today we're learning from Daniella Pierson, the 27 year old Latina co-founder of Wondermind. But that's not all… she's also the founder of the newly launched mental fitness startup Wondermind, that she launched with her co-founders Selena Gomez and Mandy Teefey after a powerful conversation around their mental health struggles. She is the World's Youngest Wealthiest Self-Made BIPOC Woman. This is seriously seriously an incredible episode. Daniella is very open about having ADHD, OCD, and Depression, and is passionate about showing the world that you can achieve success at any age, even without millions of VC dollars, while struggling with learning disabilities and mental health disorders. You are going to love this really down to earth chat about building a startup and the high highs that come with the lowest of the lows. Welcome back to the show, it's Doone here - your host and hype girl. This episode came from a really beautiful beginning that I want to tell you about. And you might know what I'm talking about if you follow me on Instagram. So a few months ago I posted out of desperation for help - about this crazy messed up period that I had which gave me hours of severe back pain and vomitting and everything else. Absolute period from hell. But the beautiful thing that came out of this experience is that I had hundreds of people reach out to me with their stories and advice and recommendations and funnily enough a guy I know, Justin Silver, popped into my DMS recommending that I meet the founder of Elix, Lulu Ge. Now Elix is is the first digital platform to use modern technology to personalize Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), by combining time-tested knowledge, medicinal botanicals, and clinical research to empower self-healing. It's ben built on the principle that menstrual cycles are a vital sign for our overall health, and Elix formulates pure and potent liquid herbal extracts clinically proven to treat hormonal imbalances that are the root cause of painful and life-disrupting symptoms. Beyond herbal treatments, Elix is committed to breaking women's health taboos and bridging the gap in healthcare knowledge through community events and their content vertical The Wisdom. So this conversation comes from a pretty special place for me as someone suffering in this space - and I learned a lot from Lulu about how she's built her business. We talk about: Using an accelerator as a launchpad Building a product with word of mouth inherently built in like wild fire Creating a business rooted in heritage and culture and using that as your core content marketing strategy And Lulu's advice for founders If you ever want to chat period stuff feel free to slide into my dms on Instagram, I am deep in the journey right now and I've shared all the insights that I received as a big juicy highlight. Helllooo! It's Doone here - your host and hype girl. I've just spent my morning working on the launch plan for Majic and now I'M excited to be popping to into your ears for our weekly mini episode. Now - You might be able to hear the storm grumbling outside my window right now which is a soundtrack I missed living in London so feel free to enjoy it with me. This week I'm answering all of your fundraising questions, covering everything you want - and need - to know but were afraid to ask. A couple of weeks ago Jessie Gabriel from All Places hosted a masterclass in our network to spill the tea on all things fundraising, and we were able to ask all of questions. And it was amazing. I didn't actually know how much I didn't know. To give you an introduction to the woman of the hour, Jessie stepped down as an equity partner and head of the Investment Funds practice at a major law firm in 2020 to launch All Places, which is a business and legal strategy firm seeking to create a more equitable world by actively helping women from all backgrounds and industries grow their business without limits. I'd say our missions align pretty damn well. All Places is actually the only firm in the US focused primarily on female asset managers and entrepreneurs and In less than a year, the firm's client roster has grown to include so many trailblazing consumer brands like Táche and Omsom, who have both come on the podcasts to share their stories! Jessie's basically a well of knowledge when it comes to fundraising and the reality of being a female founder today. I'd highly recommend jumping onto her website which you can find in the shownotes and signing up to her insightful newsletter. The key take-away I want you to take from this episode is this very important tip when it comes to raising any kind of capital. Network is the right place to start. Best case scenario, you have a great network already, that is supportive of you and your brand. If you don't have that list, the time to grow it is right now. Actively reach out to people before you're fundraising, get involved in networking groups. It's hard, and it's a lot of work, but that network is critical. The network isn't going to be VC funds necessarily, becausee they might not be ones directly writing you checks. For most of them it's just going to be too early. But investors always know other investors. And if you'e in the process of raising right now, drop me a note. I'd love to learn more about your startup and see if I can help. Hi everyone! Doone here - your host and hype girl. Thank you for tuning in to my solo episode this week. Today's episode specifically is a super super exciting one for me, because I'm going to be sharing with you what we've been working hard on behind the scenes for - what feels like forever - but has actually just been the last couple of months here at Female Startup Club. Ok so…. the building blocks for what I'm about to share with you have been around since the very early days of Female Startup Club. This was always right in the middle of that big vision of what the future would hold for the podcast. The ultimate goal.. If you're familiar with the podcast (and me!) you've probably heard of Hype Club which we launched last year into beta. Hype Club is our private network full of amazing women who are launching and building the next wave of DTC brands. We meet weekly on intimate zoom calls to chat about everything that's going on behind the scenes; the good stuff, the bad stuff and the really fucking bad stuff. And I'm not kidding you when I say this is where the magic happens. We show up to support each other, brainstorm ideas, help connect people to the people they need to be connected to and so much more. I am so damn proud of the community we're building in there and the women who are part of it. And so now with the foundation that we have Hype Club is ready to go through an evolution. We're ready for new beginnings. What's that thing about letting go of the past to allow new things to flourish? Yes, that. We have outgrown our community 1.0, and are ready to embrace the next stage of Female Startup Club with arms wide open. A stage that's all about nurturing that incredibly special community that we've already created, building an inclusive space for anyone that could do with a bit of sparkle in their lives, and spreading the impact of Female Startup Club far beyond what we previously thought possible. Today I wanna introduce you to MAJIC. And that's majic with a J. I'm excited to spill all in this episode, let's get straight into it! Today we're learning from Charlotte Chen Pienaar, the founder behind one of the coolest bootstrapped companies around right now. Everyday Humans make next-generation sunscreens that are comfortable, conscious and designed for all. We're talking about how she approaches money and the old school tips to funding a CPG brand, why retailers like Ulta and Sephora came knocking on her door and the pros and cons to creating a truly sustainable brand. When it comes to the retail landscape, there are the key aspects that can make you stand out in pitching to those big names. Firstly, the branding should be inclusive. They champion a diverse customer range. Originally aimed at ages 25-35, they've found customers all the way down to 16 and up to 65. A lot can be said for finding a brand language that can be as inclusive as that. Secondly, diversity. Everyday Humans champions itself on being a never-ordinary SPF brand. They're against average SPF. No sun, no yellow branding. They really are different. Basically, differentiation matters. To buyers, to the competition, and to your success. Finally, make sure there's a focus on sustainability. Young people are super concerned about the environment, and about where they spend their money. Retailers really like that. Combined, this means this is something you definitely want to get on board with. Now, let's get straight into it! Today's episode is brought to you by Klaviyo and I'm chatting with Becca Millstein, the Founder of Fishwife. Fishwife is a new female-founded and led food company aiming to make ethically-sourced, premium, and delicious tinned seafood a staple in every cupboard. They work with small boat fisherfolks, sustainable aquaculture farms, and microcanneries to bring the vibrance of European conservas culture to the North American table. I started following Becca's journey with Fishwife when it first launched last year and have been drooling over it ever since as a big tinned fish eater myself - so I'm really excited to share this episode with you. We're chatting about creating a distinguishable brand, what it costs and how to find the right folks, what it actually means to create a sustainable tinned fish company, how to start small and build within your means and building a brand that's truly authentic and unique. The best piece of advice that the founders were given, that led them to move so quickly, is that there is an ethos of the move fast and break things advice. Asking consumers, asking customers what they think about your products at every turn. Thats the piece of advice, 100 percent always do that. If youre not talking to your consumers, why? This is the most useful resources that you have available. Get customer feedback as soon as you can, by launching the brand. You've got to think of those hacks to get your brand and product in front of people to see if they would want to buy you. You just have to talk to so many people to do this. And you should. Because it will lead you in incredible directions and that will really build your business. Now, let's get straight into it! Joining me on today's episode is Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton, Founder of Chillhouse. Chillhouse is an experiential flagship in Soho which offers a suite of spa services and in addition to their physical space, they have a line of products ranging from press-on chill tips to candles and Chill Wear. The Chill Times is the media arm of Chillhouse that covers beauty, health, fitness, and wellness topics. Born and raised in New York City, Cyndi has been dubbed “The Queen of Chill” through her creation of Chillhouse. The idea was sparked when she and her husband realised the city didn't offer something that was aspirational and affordable, and their desire to create a place with something for everyone led to the creation of Chillhouse -- which is now the authority of modern self-care. In this episode we're talking through bringing this vision into reality, how a cult product can be used as a major discovery tool and how the ultimate Girlboss of entrepreneurs got involved with Chillhouse in the beginning, getting Cyndi to think and dream bigger. This is a great one to listen to if you know if you need to stop second guessing yourself. Biggest differentiator between men and women? Men just do and women talk a lot, try to get feedback and get advice. Men don't ask questions, they just go for it. We want to see more women just having this innate reaction. Personally here at FSC, we got some serious kick-up-the-**** vibes from this chat. The ultimate take-away is that if an idea feels brilliant to you, it could be brilliant to everybody. Stop mulling over the why not, get yourself in gear. Test whatever you think is going to work, and if it doesn't land… Then now you know! Let's get straight into it. Today we're learning from Amy Liu of Tower 28. We're covering how to make your pitch count when it comes to getting stocked into retailers like Sephora + how to be a best seller at Sephora, and how she stands out in a saturated market. Tower 28 is an Insta-favorite clean beauty brand designed for sensitive skin and made for all. Created with a hint of nostalgia (hello Juicy Tubes!), Tower 28's products are bold, playful, and accessible (with all price points under $28!). With the message that #ItsOkayToBeSensitive, Tower 28 is the first and only beauty brand to follow the National Eczema Association's Ingredient Guidelines. That means 0% irritating ingredients and 100% safe for sensitive skin. It's also clean, vegan, rigorously dermatologist-tested, and made in the USA. We can all learn a lot from Amy's out-the-box approach to pitching. Without giving too much away, she dives into why you need to make buyers feel the brand. Really animate it. Really stand out in a way. It's like any relationship, the first thing you want is for them to say yes. But you don't just want them to say yes. You want them to be SO excited to be doing this. The whole thing is: you want them to be your advocate internally, so that when it does come to launching they're your cheerleader. And all the details on just how to do that are packed inside the episode. So, let's get straight into it! Today on the show we are learning from Olivia (or Liv as I know her!) Koennecke, Founder of luxury pyjamas brand Maison Essentiele. Maison Essentiele creates luxurious home essentials defined by soft, fluid silhouettes and tailoring. Every piece in the collection is responsibly crafted using high-quality natural fabrics like A-grade silk, European linen and organic cotton, allowing you to elevate your morning and evening routine with their chic pajama sets and silky nightdresses. If you're in the fashion industry this is such an amazing deep dive on things you should be considering when it comes to capital, how to go about getting a retailer like Net-A-Porter and Bloomingdales, and her thoughts behind gifting high-priced products to influencers. I especially loved getting into the nitty gritty of the financials behind building a luxury brand. You wouldn't be alone in thinking that starting a luxury fashion brand would require a hefty bit of capital to get you off the ground. I sure thought so, but Liv really turned this on its head for me. “Because I had no capital to work with, it has always made me have a really lean way of operating. I've always had to be really savvy with my money, and be really creative to have done what I've done. This is the biggest lesson that I want to pass on to other business owners. You actually, to begin with, don't need a huge amount of money.” I just had to know the secret. When it comes to a logo, website, designing some packaging… There are so many great tools that you can use right now that are so much lower cost. Those are a lot more cost-efficient than agency packages. Outsourcing websites such as: Fiverr, Upwork, 99Designs, Writer Access, Total…In this way, you can pay by the hour or by the project, and save those pretty pennies for other areas of the biz. So smart. Let's get straight into it! Joining me on today's episode is Cherie Hoeger, Founder of Saalt. Saalt is a company aiming to modernize reusable period care. In 2018, Saalt launched its flagship product—the Saalt period cup—with the vision of making cleaner, more sustainable period care accessible to everyone. Leading Saalt's social impact efforts, Cherie began networking with impact partners to provide their period cups to underprivileged girls and women so they could confidently manage their periods, stay in school, and lift themselves out of poverty. The lightbulb moment came to Cherie after a phone call with her aunt in Venezuela, who had not been able to purchase pads or tampons for a year as a result of the local political situation. This circumstance, being a woman herself, and having five daughters, got Cherie thinking about what reusable options are actually available to us women out there. Now in their third year in business, Saalt has donated over 12,000 cups in over twenty-two countries to create a wave of informed cup users who then act as mentors for other donation recipients. In this episode you'll hear how Cherie and her husband got started, how they got their impactful start by launching the brand to their focus group of 1000 people, the way they're driving growth through impact and education, and why Cherie urges everyone to consider becoming a B Corp business. Our fave take-aways from this inspiring chat with Cherie? As entrepreneurs it's really a rollercoaster. It's often said you only have two emotions as an entrepreneur: euphoria and terror. And the lack of sleep emphasises them both. This is amazing, and I truly can't get enough of this quote. Secondly, fail forward: you're either winning or you're learning. There is no in between. Number three, entrepreneurship is being committing to your vision. Be the one that sticks around and stays consistent with their vision. Have true confidence in your business and in your product. Today's episode is a real goodie, I'm speaking to Angela Scott about her namesake brand From The Office of Angela Scott. Founded a decade ago for Women Who Mean Business™ The Office of Angela Scott is more than just a luxury footwear brand, it represents the collective power of all women. A perfect trifecta, The Office of Angela Scott is a woman-owned, woman-run and woman-funded brand designed to pave the way for professional women, one beautiful shoe at a time. The lightbulb moment hit Angela being surrounded by a lot of men in business, footwear had always been her statement piece but she was seeing her heels get in the way of what she wanted to become as it was simply harder to get things done. With a clear vision in mind, Angela set off to produce her designs in Italy before pitching door-to-door in every little boutique she set her sights on. Ten years and a 10 million dollar business later, we reflect on the highs and lows of this journey, appreciating the true inflection point just two years ago where everything just started to click. But Angela's story isn't one of overnight success, she's been grinding away and she shares so openly and honestly that it was only 2 years ago she felt a true inflection point where everything started to just click. This is an episode about that relentless pursuit and conviction about what you're doing in the world and why you're doing it. We speak about how she's funded the business and why it's important to ask for help and turn to the people around you, and some of her key learnings from along the way. Like the power of truly understanding your customer and putting them at the forefront of everything you do. Let's get straight into it!
