S1 Ep143: Using Multidisciplinary Lifestyle Medicine to Enhance Cancer Survivor QOL

Oncology Peer Review On-The-Go

In a conversation with CancerNetwork®, Rachel A. Millstein, PhD, MHS; Loren Winters, NP; and Amy Comander, MD, discussed their article titled Implementing a Multidisciplinary Lifestyle Medicine Clinic for Cancer Survivorship, which was published in the November 2024 issue of ONCOLOGY®. The authors detailed the implementation of a novel oncology-based multidisciplinary lifestyle medicine clinic that may help enhance the quality of life (QOL) among survivors of cancer. Millstein is a psychologist in the Behavioral Medicine Program and an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital. Winters is an oncology nurse practitioner and assistant director of the Lifestyle Medicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Comander is the medical director of Mass General Cancer Center-Waltham, director of the Breast Oncology Program at Newton-Wellesley Hospital, and director of the Lifestyle Medicine Program at Massachusetts General Hospital. Millstein outlined the rationale for this publication on the development of a multidisciplinary lifestyle medicine clinic, highlighting a need to boost general awareness and support for lifestyle medicine consultations and health behavior change in cancer survivor care. Winters then explained how the multidisciplinary clinic works in alignment with 6 key pillars of lifestyle medicine, as team members aim to promote physical activity, plant-predominant diets, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances, and social connections to enhance QOL among cancer survivors. Additionally, Comander highlighted how the lifestyle medicine program optimizes health and well-being by matching patients to the specific services they require, which may include the help of team members such as board-certified physicians, nurse practitioners, registered dietitians, and clinical psychologists. Millstein and Winters then detailed the improvements in health behaviors associated with 2 patient cases at their program, demonstrating the potential benefits of implementing broad and diverse lifestyle medicine tools in oncology-supportive care. Looking ahead, Comander described the importance of addressing gaps in education, a lack of programs focused on areas such as weight management, and other barriers to the implementation of lifestyle medicine in oncology care. Finally, each author expressed her hope to see more colleagues, clinics, and programs incorporate lifestyle medicine as part of elevating QOL among survivors of cancer. The authors invite listeners to contact them if they would like to find ways to implement lifestyle medicine in their respective centers.

This is a special replay of an episode of the REJUVENAGING with Dr. Ron Kaiser podcast that was first posted on May 23rd, 2023Dr. Ron Kaiser is the host of the podcast REJUVENAGING® with Dr. Ron Kaiser, and in this episode he interviews brain health expert Dr. Marc Milstein. Dr. Milstein has written a book, The Age Proof Brain, which provides strategies to improve memory, protect immunity, and fight off dementia. According to Dr. Milstein, our power to improve brain function lies in the brain's connection with the rest of the body. The book covers topics such as sleep habits and environmental toxins, and offers integrative science-supported strategies to increase memory, fight off depression, improve mood, ignite energy, and even prevent dementia and non-genetic Alzheimer's disease.Dr. Marc Millstein was welcomed to the REJUVENAGING® with Dr. Ron Kaiser podcast to discuss the topic of aging and its effects on cognition. Dr. Millstein has a PhD in biological chemistry and a Bachelor of Science degree in molecular, cellular and developmental biology from UCLA. He discussed how there is an increase in cases of dementia and Alzheimer's due to people living longer and underlying conditions that drive memory loss. He stressed the importance of taking control of these conditions, such as heart health, diabetes, and lifestyle factors, in order to protect one's brain now and in the future. The conversation discussed how to maintain memory health as one ages. It was highlighted that genes are not the only factor when it comes to memory health, and that there are various other areas that need to be taken into consideration. These include sleep, nutrition, stress levels, activity levels, underlying conditions such as cardiovascular health, diabetes, metabolism, and gut health. It was also highlighted that there are treatments available for many of these conditions, and that it is important to optimize them in order to maintain a healthy brain. The conversation includes how memory and brain processing can improve or decline as people age. Multitasking becomes more difficult with age, and this can be a cause for concern. It is important to identify the root cause of memory issues, as they can often be treatable. Dr. Milstein suggests taking extra time to focus on one thing at a time, as our brains tend to forget information that we do not focus on for at least 10 seconds. This can be helpful in preventing people from having difficulty remembering things like where they put their keys or their car. Additionally, he suggests that analytical thinking and the ability to store information can improve with age. Lastly, it was discussed that there are some normal age-related declines that should not be of alarm, such as difficulty in adapting to new technology. In conclusion, there are many steps that can be taken to maintain brain health as one ages.DrMarcMilstein.comFacebookInstagramYouTubehttps://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1637741421?tag=randohouseinc7986-20 Hosted on Acast. Seafood in a can or rather tinned fish, as it has long been known in Europe, has evolved from tuna in water into endless possibilities, becoming one of the bigger foody trends to come out of the coronavirus pandemic when people stuck at home looked to be creative with their cupboard staples and started posting recipes. Since then, the industry has only expanded, fueled by social media influencers touting the benefits of high-powered protein food in beautiful, brightly colored metal containers. It's now a regular offering on wine bar menus. There are tinned fish clubs, like wine clubs, where members receive monthly shipments of various seafood packed in countless combinations of spices, oils, and sauces. Videos on tinned fish, from tastings to how-to tips on cleaning the fishy smell from cans, have generated more than 30 million views on TikTok. Globally, the canned fish industry is expected to reach $11 billion in less than five years partly because of its popularity among young people, especially in the United States, according to IndustryARC, a market analysis firm. Dubbed the “hot girl food,” many who buy it are working women seeking healthy food on the go, according to analysts. Becca Millstein was among those who opened a tinned fish business after eating more of it during the coronavirus lockdowns. Millstein had lived in Spain in college and spent time in Portugal, both countries where tinned fish has long been a part of people's diets, and knew there were better options to be had. So she opened Los Angeles-based Fishwife in 2020 with the goal to offer high-quality, sustainably sourced seafood that “emphasized the culinary aspect of the product and also sort of harkened back to the tradition” of the centuries-old way of preserving fish. Millstein said she first sought out canneries in Spain and Portugal and contacted fishers along the West Coast who connected her to canneries in Oregon and Washington. Three years later, her products are sourced globally, she said. This article was provided by The Associated Press.

Dr. Ron Kaiser is the host of the podcast REJUVENAGING® with Dr. Ron Kaiser, and in this episode he interviews brain health expert Dr. Mark Milstein. Mark Millstein was welcomed to the REJUVENAGING® with Dr. Chic is not typically a word associated with fish. But it is fitting for Fishwife. A modern, super-premium brand of tinned seafood, Fishwife is the brainchild of entrepreneurs Becca Millstein and Caroline Goldfarb. Launched in December 2020, the Los Angeles-based company markets ethically sourced canned tuna, salmon, trout and anchovies from fisheries and aquaculture farms in the United States and Europe. Known for its bright and quirky label designs, Fishwife built a thriving DTC business early on and gradually introduced distribution to select brick-and-mortar retailers across the U.S. Earlier this year, Whole Foods began selling Fishwife products at stores in its Southern Pacific region and will add them to its Northern California locations this summer.  In this episode, Millstein spoke about the “light bulb” moment and planning process that led to the development of Fishwife, the impact of its striking label design on trial and word of mouth marketing, her perspective on scaling a niche concept and how she navigated and learned from a potentially devastating sourcing crisis. Show notes: 0:43: Interview: Becca Millstein, Co-Founder/CEO, Fishwife - Millstein met with Taste Radio editor Ray Latif at Expo West 2023 where the entrepreneur spoke about Fishwife's emergence as a “pandemic baby,” parallels between her previous career in the music industry and that of consumer products and why it was important to identify the brand's target consumer early on. She also explained how Fishwife's branding and label designs generated significant interest among consumer and trade media and foundation for DTC success, the day that Millstein worried that her business was in peril and how she planned to avoid a similar one in the future and how she assesses partnerships with other consumer brands. As American society ages, there is growing concern and interest about the causes of mental decline and how to slow it. However, serious mental decline is not an inevitable part of the aging process, according to popular scientist Dr. Marc Millstein. According to him, people can boost short- and long-term brain health and significantly lower the risk of dementia if the right steps are taken now. In his new book, The Age-Proof Brain, Dr. Milstein reveals his secrets to improving brain function, which he says lie in the brain's surprising connection with the rest of the body. Debunking common misinformation, the book offers science-driven strategies focused on improving memory and productivity, increasing energy and boosting your mood, reducing the risk of anxiety and depression, and preventing nongenetic Alzheimer's and dementia. Lincoln Millstein played a critical role in launching The Boston Globe's free digital site, boston.com. Boston.com began as a portal, and carried Globe journalism but also curated other news sites and community blogs. It had a separate staff, and the office was in downtown Boston, not in the old Dorchester plant. Lincoln went on to be executive vice president at New York Times Digital, then moved on to the Hearst Corporation, where he held a number of different roles.  When Lincoln retired as senior assistant to CEO Steven Swartz of Hearst in 2018, he wondered what was next. He found the answer by returning to his roots as a local reporter, recalling the days when he started out in the Middletown bureau of the Hartford Courant in the mid-1970s.  He and his wife, Irene Driscoll, also a longtime journalist, had upgraded their summer place in Maine in anticipation of spending more time there in retirement. Then the pandemic hit, and they moved in. He started picking up lots of local scoops on how the pandemic was affecting businesses. Not to mention the occasional deer collision. That's how The Quietside Journal got its start. Dan has a Quick Take on the Telegram & Gazette of Worcester, which recently won a big public-records victory over the city of Worcester, which has been stonewalling them for years, and Ellen looks at newsroom layoffs and transparency.
