Leah Scurto and Herlinda Heras. Leah Scurto from Pizzaleah joins Herlinda Heras and Harry Duke who is sitting in for Steve Jaxon on Brew Ha Ha today. Herlinda Heras is back from another trip to Liverpool, this time to see Pete Best and his band. Leah Scurto is Herlinda's neighbor and friend. This is her first time on Brew Ha Ha but she was a guest on our other podcast, California Wine Country, on this CWC episode of April 27, 2022. In that show we hear about how Leah was getting ready to serve pizzas at the 2022 Healdsburg Wine and Food Experience. Herlinda brought Leah into beer judging. Leah will be cooking at the Great American Beer Festival in Denver, CO, in October later this year. “They get the best of the best of the chefs, paired up with breweries.” It's Leah's fourth year doing it. Leah's partner this year is a brewery from Iowa called Big Grove, which is the official craft brewer of the Iowa Hawkeyes, check out their website^. Big Grove making a double IPA and an Oktoberfest for the Great American Beer Fest. Leah is cooking for Thursday and Friday nights. To pair with the double IPA she will make pickles with that brew, then make a pickle dip. She will make a mushroom pizza to go with the Oktoberfest. Pizzaleah in Windsor, near Oliver's Pizzaleah is located in Windsor near Oliver's, at 9240 Old Redwood Hwy, #116. Their beer list includes a tap where she rotates local brewers in and out. Right now there is a beer from Ghost Town in Oakland. Russian River Brewing Co. is open in Santa Rosa on 4th St. and at their big Windsor location. Visit their website for up-to-date hours, menus, beers and more. Leah has brought some pizzas including the Old Graybeard which is the people's favorite. They pair that pizza with the Old Caz Free Craig's. Leah participates in international pizza competitions This summer she was at the Caputo Cup in Naples. Caputo is a brand of flour from Naples and they put on the pizza festival and the competition. Leah placed third! See our sponsor Victory House at Poppy Bank Epicenter online, for their latest viewing and menu options. When Leah needed a job in Santa Cruz in college, she got hired at a pizza shop where she eventually stayed for more then 2 decades. She opened 20 restaurants for them so she sure knows the business. She opened her restaurant about four years ago and survived the pandemic as the first order of business. It happened to be just as the pandemic was closing everyone down. She weathered the storm by being available for delivery at a time when that was the only way to get food to the people. The beer selection at Pizzaleah is important to Leah. She wants to support local brewers by featuring their products and also whenever possible she tries to support small local suppliers and organic production. The Lola pizza, with pesto, potato and caramelized onion, is paired with the Crispy Crusher from Cooperage.

Kingston Yard is Cedar Rapids' $81.5 million mixed use development located at 1st and 1st West. Big Grove opened yesterday, December 14. This marks the brand's fourth tap room. The Cedar Rapids location features a large patio for those who want to enjoy fresh air with their beers. Inside, visitors can view open fermentation tanks. This is a technique favored in Germany and the Czech Republic but used by just a handful of U.S. breweries. Meanwhile, the Pickle Palace entertainment and dining complex is planning a soft opening by invitation at the end of this month. The Pickle Palace is multiple levels. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Wednesday, August 25. Tuesday's humid weather turned into heavy rain and sometimes dangerous conditions. Wednesday could provide a repeat of this pattern. According to the National Weather Service it will be partly sunny with a high near 90 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area on Wednesday. There will be a 30 percent chance of rain, primarily after 4 p.m., with some storms having the potential for heavy rain. Then Wednesday night the chance for rain will continue at roughly the same probability, although more likely it will be rain again. Severe thunderstorms swept across Central and Eastern Iowa on Tuesday, bringing hail and high winds that damaged buildings and snapped trees. According to National Weather Service https://www.weather.gov/source/crh/lsrmap.html?sid=dvn (storm reports, )the bad weather in the state spanned from as far west as Story City north of Des Moines to as far east as Bellevue on the Iowa-Illinois border. Early storm reports showed widespread winds, ranging from 40 to 70 mph, as well as hail raging in size from a quarter inch to 1 inch in diameter. The most damaging storms appear to have hit northeastern Iowa, at, and to the north of, Manchester. Parents expressed worries for the safety of their children and others Tuesday as students in Iowa City schools finished their second day of classes without a face mask requirement. During a school board meeting, the board was presented with a petition signed by over 1,000 community members, medical providers and parents asking the Iowa City Community School District to require masks in schools to help protect against the spread of COVID-19. The petitioners did so while conceding that the board's hands are likely tied by a state law passed in May prohibiting masking mandates. Iowa City School Superintendent Matt Degner said the district is aware of the concerns and is working on solutions to keep students safe. Leadership is changing at the Englert Theatre in downtown Iowa City. Andre Perry, executive director for 11 years, has resigned to pursue new projects. His final day is Sept. 13, but he will help finalize fall and spring programming already underway, and will continue as executive director for the upcoming Witching Hour festival and Mission Creek festival in 2022. Perry has led the nonprofit arts presenter through growing from an $800,000 budget in 2010 to a $1.9 million budget in 2019. He also founded Mission Creek and Witching Hour festivals, showcasing high-profile and emerging artists, as well as local musicians, authors, poets and creators. This is Stephen Schmidt from the Gazette digital news desk and I'm here with your update for Saturday April 17 and Sunday April 18. For weather we are looking at, overall, a pretty pleasant weekend to get out and do things. According to the National Weather Service, on Saturday it will be partly sunny with a high near 58 degrees in the Cedar Rapids area, with a wind speed of 5 to 10 mph. On Sunday, the wind will remain at the same speed, the skies will again be partly sunny, and the high will finally creep back up to 60 degrees. The Iowa Economic Development Authority on Friday narrowed down the proposals from Iowa communities to down to six from a pool of 10 competing for a total $100 million awarded through its Reinvestment District program. The program “reinvests” sales and hotel-motel tax revenues to cities for use in developments that boost the quality of life and create or enhance recreational opportunities, with the idea of attracting people from outside the region to visit. Cedar Rapids' proposal, which envisions more than $261 million in investments overall, is the largest of all the community proposals. Any funding awarded to Cedar Rapids would support cornerstone downtown developments that have struggled to get off the ground. Matt Swift, founder of Iowa's Big Grove Brewery, returns to the podcast this week. The Magical Mystery Brew is dying to take you away... but more on that later. Jeremy has a sneak peek at Big Grove's birthday treat. Michael gets Jeremy to say a "swear" for his beer brag. And then, Brews News, NEW BUD PRODUCT ALERT... but we are rather jaded. After all, "The dorks will always have the street cred that Bud will never have." Then, it's time for the FDR. About a month ago, Michael handed Jeremy a box of "brews" all wrapped in brown paper bags. Today, he finds out what one of those drinks is.Beer in this episode: Steele Reserve Alloy Series Tropical StormCheers!
So tonight it was just us core guys minus Ron who is busy at work. Well we tackle the topic that everybody is talking about these days, Corona.....virus. Don't worry we drink a bunch of heavy beers and get rather opinionated. Let's face it, we solve all the problems. Listen up and grab a beer and enjoy. BTW, Big Grove, you guys are doing great things! Also, we need a sign or some decals for our studio! lol
We start on time(.gov). Michael explores the dark hole outside the podcast, enjoying Trois Pistoles. Jeremy gets into Hazier Things at Big Grove. Michael then launches a quiz about dark black holes in fiction, specifically film, which brings up movies of yore. We then get into the FDR, where a chocolaty brew hits one note well, somewhat catching us off guard.Beer in this episode: Atwater Decandent Dark Chocolate AleCheers!
This week the Beer Nuts celebrate Thanksgiving with beers from The Bruery, Other Half, North Coast, Leinenkugel, Big Grove, Alpine, King Harbor, and Anchor Steam! Please follow us on Twitter @BeerNutsPodcast, or follow us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com
A follow-up episode to Jeremy's bachelor party, Michael and Jeremy regale listeners with tales of beer brags, party buses, and breweries - specifically Thew, Quarter Barrel, Lion Bridge, and Big Grove. Michael dumps on an energy drink as it impaired him playing The Resistance. Boozy cherries and zipper flies enter the mix. We finally move on to the FDR. Within, Jeremy attempts to invent a new unit of measurement (instead of simply converting ounces into milliliters), we discuss Malort, and remember Blue Razz? It's back, in Pog form. Oh, and we also have the largest disparity in beer ratings of all time.Beer in this episode: Deschutes Da Shootz!Cheers!
Jeremy brings up a surprise topic to open up the show, discussing the intersection of professional wrestling, geopolitics, and murder. From there, we move on to the regular scheduled beer brags. Michael is still chipping away at Oktoberfests due to a two week illness. Meanwhile, Jeremy is making a kringle and bragging about Big Grove brews, one yella and one red. Next up, we got some brews news, with some good news out of Off Color Brewing. Finally, we get into the FDR where a nitro stout ventures into unusual territory for its kind.Beer in this episode: Firestone Walker Nitro Merlin Milk StoutCheers!
A broken Jeremy introduces the show and brags about a nice stout he had and Buster, the first bottled release from Big Grove. Michael had two Belgian-style barreled-aged beers from 3 Sheeps. Speaking of strange combinations, the American Pale Male Mail Pail brings up a whiskey aged in an IPA barrel, not the other way around. Then we talk the volumetric properties of Frisbees. Finally, we move on the the FDR, where a much awaited brew greets us.Beer in this episode: Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPACheers!
Themed beer brags! Michael has the citra-loaded King Sue while Jeremy has a Citra Triad flight from Big Grove, including a single, double, and imperial citra IPA. It's cirtamazing! Next, it's the American Pale Male Mail Pail, where a good friend has a question about impaired beer tasting. Not the type of impaired that you would think either. After some talk on beer products, it's off to the FDR!Beer in this episode: Lift Bridge Farm Girl SaisonCheers!
After munching on stuffing, Jeremy and Michael are back for another episode. Beer brags include tasting a sour while under the influence of miracle fruit and a brown ale from Big Grove. Next, we talk our Black Friday strategies, then naturally we move onto 80s trivia. The FDR prompts a long discussion (with sidetracking about submerged trees, Abe Lincoln, and book suggestions) about a remarkable brew.Beer in this episode: Peace Tree William Milo Stone Imperial StoutCheers!

Episode 106. We had a guest lined up, but then...well, it's all explained inside the podcast. In this episode, we actually talk fairly seriously about politics. But it doesn't last long. We devolve into stuff like scheduling haircuts, first jobs, kids these days and their YouTube obsessions. All while drinking beers from Avery Brewing, SingleSpeed and Big Grove.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/three-beers-later/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? Episode 54. I really thought the computer was gonna eat this episode. It would become "the lost episode". People would speak of it in hushed, reverent voices. Now, just regular ol' voices. In this episode, Darion brought us beers he picked up on his road trip to Michigan. We hit Iowa, we hit Indiana, and we hit the beautiful mitten that is Michigan. We talk about the time Darion witnessed a murder. We discover that Connor is a jackass on the road, and Mark is a little bitch. We go through our spam folders. And we have a good beer night courtesy of Three Floyds, New Holland and Big Grove. Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/three-beers-later/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast? Episode 117. The world is new. It's different. It's scary. We aren't allowed to shake hands anymore. It all happened very quickly. So, naturally, we spend a half hour talking about Netflix's Love is Blind. And trying to figure out what CATS is all about (regardless of the presence of buttholes). And, yes, we talk about what it's like to go through life "with all that's going on in the world right now." All while drinking stouts from Big Grove, Goose Island, and Zipline.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/three-beers-later/donationsWant to advertise on this podcast?
