Drew and April-Lyn were at GenCon 2019 this week to play games and interview the developers of said games. This week is part 1 of our interviews featuring some returning guests from GenCon 2018 as well as new developers. Michael Fox gives us an update on the success of Holding On: The Troubled Life of Billy Kerr as well as the new game Oceana Megacities from Hub Games. Tiffany Caires also shares her passion with Habba Games of bettering the lives of those who play by teaching social and emotional skills to players. Zain Memon had an ambitious goal of making a game that allowed players to talk about politics while avoiding the toxicity and anger tied to those discussion in todays culture.

Rescue Polar Bears is a family weight cooperative game that evokes Flash Point: Fire Rescue. This cooperative game about giving palliative care to a dying man has caused quite a stir since being announced. Liz and Jeremy share some thoughts about the hype.  Jason leaps back in to talk about Champions of Hara (31:53), an adventure game with hand management that evokes one of the truly great solo games of all time... well, you know. Michael Fox, co-creator of the board game Holding On: The Troubled Life of Billy Kerr joins Drew and Chris this week to talk about a game in which there is no real way to win, but how to loose in the best way possible. This premise sets the discussion for how board games are becoming mediums for playing out more mature scenarios.  The second half of the interview talks about Michael's formative years after he was born in both London and Ireland. His proclivity to wanting answers to everything lead him to question his fear based Catholic upbringing and how he remains "Death Positive" in his atheism.

This week, we preview one of the most distinct games you will hear about this year. The co-designers from Hub Games - Michael Fox and Rory O'Connor, join us this week to talk about Holding On: The Troubled Life of Billy Kerr. This is a cooperative worker placement game with an extremely unique theme - you are a nurse providing palliative care to a dying man, and your job is to keep him alive while helping him restore his memories. Michael and Rory talk about taking on such a difficult theme, as well as mechanical issues such as how they dealt with the alpha player issue in a coop game. This one is really unique, and we are happy to give you an early explanation for it. To be clear, this game is not on Kickstarter or any kind of preorder yet. However, you can observe demos of the game at both Origins and GenCon. It will be released at Essen 2018. If you want a demo, though, sign up fast at this year's Origins!
