Putting a band together for a younger Tristan Shone 20 years ago was not as easy as he thought it might be, so he used his knowledge of mechanical engineering and sense of tenacious autonomy to create his own instruments that would allow him to make live music on his own; Music without the use of traditional instruments like guitars and drums and backingtracks a single musician might use to fill out the sound. Nope. Tristan and his fellow engineers created a few different unique tactile tools that he could oscillate in a live setting for different sounds, explosions and deep tones. It became Author and Punisher and is now 7 records into a 20 year career with his most recent records being released on noise-centric Relapse Records and touring with the likes of Tool. To wit: Justin Chancellor and Danny Carey both play on A&P's most recent release, Krüller. Tristans dayjob as a mechanical engineer with The National Center for Microscopy and Imaging Research at UCSD dovetails perfectly with A&P as both concentrations are using his knowledge of machines for use in more delicate forms with scientists and musicians. Indeed, he and his fellow engineers are now creating unique instruments (dronemachines.com) for different artists like ARCA for use in her experimental performances. He's a dedicated San Diegan now and also devotes time with Border Angels who make "water drops" in dangerous desert regions for migrants seeking asylum in the states.

On the 12th episode of Immigration Today! we welcome Dulce Garcia, the Executive Director of Border Angels. Border Angels is a nonprofit organization that advocates for human rights at the U.S. Mexican Border. Their work focuses on attempting to reduce the number of fatalities at the border through direct action such as water drops at the desert to help immigrants battling dehydration along their journey into the U.S and direct humanitarian aid. Dulce Garcia was raised in San Diego and is an undocumented DACA recipient herself. She is a witness of the hardships many immigrants face but despite of this she graduated from UCSD with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and attended law school at Cleveland Marshall College of Law. Since then she opened her private practice in 2016 and has provided assistance to many low income immigrants. Dulce also sued Trump and the administration after the termination of DACA. As a result of those efforts, hundreds of thousands of DACA recipients are able to renew their DACA status. She has received the “Women of the Year” award by Assembly Woman Lorena S. Gonzalez.  In this podcast, Dulce recounts her personal journey as an undocumented immigrant growing up near the border in San Diego. She is a business owner, property owner, an attorney, and she pays taxes. Even after 33 years she does not have a path to citizenship like thousands of other migrants in the U.S. She also tells us about her brother's deportation case and how she fought to bring him back. Border Angels relies on the generosity of donations from listeners like you – please consider donating via their website. In this episode of the El Progreso podcast, we discuss the latest news from the US-Mexico border. With undocumented people applying for asylum and crossing the border at record rates, we talk to immigration experts about what the Biden administration has done to move away from the Trump policies and how it has also upheld some of the same harmful laws, including Title 42. Our guests include Dulce Garcia, the Director of Border Angels, an immigration advocacy organization that among its many efforts, places large water jugs in the desert for people crossing the border. We'll get a sense of how that organization and others like it reach out to immigrants in the US, including day laborers, and help them with basic needs, especially during COVID. We'll also speak with Latinx people working inside tech companies about how they feel about tools they build being used to apprehend immigrants. And we end the show with a conversation with a San Francisco-based band, Soltron, whose songs describe the city's political battlefields of gentrification and the immigrant experience.

This weeks Magnificent Mujer is photojournalist, writer & host of “America Speaks”, author of We Protest: Protecting The America We Believe In, Rizzoli Books.  In her new book, “We PROTEST: Fighting for What We Believe In” (Rizzoli), photojournalist Tish Lampert captures the spirit of the heroes and ordinary citizens on their activist journey to defend their American values during the most conflicted era in our recent history. The book charts the chronology of social-change movements that have dominated the headlines over the past several years: the fight for women’s rights and gender equality, immigration rights, civil liberties, gun violence, and the environment. Lampert takes us to the front lines of activism, where she has documented each protest and their respective leaders, as well as the legions of ordinary Americans standing together to protect the values of our great nation. Lampert, based in L.A., began her work in the 70’s with a focus on human rights issues. She has chronicled protest movements that have been catalysts for reform in America for 20 years. She covered the 1992 riots in Los Angeles; the Cesar Chavez movement for migrant worker’s rights; the Navajo Nation in Tuba City and Window Rock, among others. Her “in the field” investigations include assignments for: Conflict Awareness Project, Voices of African Mothers, Gente Unida, and Border Angels, to name a few. She has won awards for her work in Sub-Sahara Africa and has exhibited in the United Nations, Photo LA and elsewhere. For five years she served as media director and photographer for Voices of African Mothers at the United Nations. Lampert is also the creator and host of the podcast, “America Speaks,” which gives voice to today’s heroes on the front-lines of fighting for social change. www.tishlampert.org. Support this podcast

E006 Podcast with Enrique Morones founder of Border Angels Border Angels is an all volunteer, non profit organization that advocates for human rights, humane immigration reform, and social justice with a special focus on issues related to issues related to the US-Mexican border. Border Angels engages in community education and awareness programs that include guided trips to the desert to place water along migrant crossing routes as well as to the border to learn about the history of US-Mexico border policy and experience the border fence firsthand. Border Angels’ mission is to reduce the number of fatalities occurring along the Californian border through the placement of life saving water stations in the desert.  Border Angels work is driven by these words: “When I was hungry, who gave me to eat? – When I was thirsty, who gave me to drink?” (Matthew 25:35). In this we make it our mission to ensure that all people are received with a sense of humanity and compassion, and that the cycle of death along the border does not continue into the coming years. https://www.borderangels.org/ Podcast: Bad Hombre Book Border Angels: The Power of One by Enrique Morones *This episode was recorded in March 2018

It’s harder to find a more passionate advocate for Latino issues in America than Border Angels founder, Enrique Morones.Enrique has been a constant face in the Media on all issues related to migration; and is the “go-to expert” whenever a major immigration issue faces America, from aftermath of the firestorms in San Diego, to the migration of refugee children in Texas from Central America in 2014. Enrique talks a bout the unacceptable moral compass in the US today. it’s time to face reality about what we stand for in the United States. Do we stand for family values? If Congress remains silent in the face of separating children from their parents at the US/Mexican Border than Everyone In our government who Does not do everything they can to stop this inhumane policy is complicit. This is a powerful discussion on family separation. Border Angels works tirelessly to help all the vulnerable and disenfranchised families, and people who are solely seeking a better life, escaping from violence and persecution.

We talking about how we're all feeling (...like shit), what we can do (volunteer, donate to orgs like Border Angels and the Brennan Center for Justice and Planned Parenthood), if and how we can engage or should engage the people in our lives who voted Trump, and what the role of art is in the coming revolution.
