Eamonn Owens plays the charismatic only child of a troubled 60's family, courting disaster in his struggle with identity. His desperate search for connection and purpose is wryly funny but is this Neil Jordan dark comedy too bleak, even with a Sinead O'Connor cameo? Come take a wee nip of goofy, chaotic wisdom and judge which brains you find agreeable.

He still has to work at it every day, but he provides invaluable insights into the inner workings of a predatory mind. Shawn talks with Jon about the movie Butcher Boy. He identifies closely with the boy who is the villain of the movie. A wide-ranging conversation about art, faith, personality, and change.

In our first episode, our hosts – author and critic Jo Hamya and broadcaster and critic James Walton – get to know each other by discussing their favourite books from the Booker Library – the name we give to all the books that have been nominated for (or won!) the International Booker Prize and Booker Prize over the last 50-odd years. This episode contains significant plot details. In this episode Jo and James talk about: Why No One is Talking About This, a novel that captures our deep entanglement with the internet through its blend of laugh-out-loud humour and beautifully-observed prose, could have won the 2021 Booker Prize. Why Patrick McCabe's The Butcher Boy' a 1992 Booker shortlistee that follows a young man's descent into madness in small-town Ireland, isn't a virtuous read but it is one that will blow your socks off. Happy Neil Jordan to you! This week we bring you a filim that Keith remembers watching at some point and the rest is conjecture. A movie based on a novel inspired by a real life mukduk, a possible anti-Boomer nostalgia piece, a impressionistic allegorical rumination on Ireland in the 1960s - all or none of this and more, it's 1997's The Butcher Boy. +++++ Intro: by Professor Ping available on Bandcamp Outro: Sinead O'Connor performing Call Me Joe --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/zandkmoviepod/support

Blackie is a fictional character created by author Jack Boyle (October 19, 1881 – October 1928). Blackie, a jewel thief and safecracker in Boyle's stories, became a detective in adaptations for films, radio and television—an "enemy to those who make him an enemy, friend to those who have no friend." Actor Chester Morris was the best-known Blackie, playing the character in 14 Columbia Pictures films (1941–1949) and in a 1944 NBC radio series. Boston Blackie is the role for which Morris is best remembered. Radio. Listeners, are you aware that Shuhada Sadaqat - or Sinead O'Connor, as she was - once played the Virgin Mary? If that sounds like a provocative idea, you ain't seen nothing yet. Neil Jordan's The Butcher Boy is one of the darkest and most mordantly funny entries in a directorial career that's also included Interview With the Vampire and The Company of Wolves, and we've got We Are Cult's Mark Cunliffe back in to talk about every deliriously sick moment. The story of a school bully spiralling into psychopathy against a backdrop of early '60s nuclear paranoia, it features an astonishing lead performance from Eamonn Owens and a stacked supporting cast of superb Irish thesps. (You'll never look at Milo O'Shea in the same way again) We discuss how the film defies '90s media cliches about Ireland, as well as the unusual circumstances of its funding from David Geffen. Plus a lot of chat about O'Connor's career, and an appreciation of Kris Kristofferson for offering support at the height of her post-SNL backlash. Unlike this film, this podcast is not an uncommercial project funded by an inexplicably generous record industry mogul. Dana Stevens joins Elizabeth and John to discuss Camera Man: Buster Keaton, the Dawn of Cinema and the Invention of the Twentieth Century. Her fantastic new book serves as occasion to revel in the work and working world of Buster Keaton, that "solemn, beautiful, perpetually airborne man." Although packed with fascinating tidbits from Keaton's life, Camera Man is much more than just a biography. It performs its own airborne magic, lightly traversing topics like the crackdown on the use of children in vaudeville, the fluidity of roles before and behind the camera in early Hollywood and the doors that were briefly (ever so briefly) opened for female directors. Among other treats, Dana unpacks one of Keaton's early great "two-reelers" One Week ( a spoof of brisk upbeat industrial films) and his parodic "burlesques" e.g. of Lillian Gish. People, Films, Books and Ideas in the conversation include: Roscoe ("Fatty") Arbuckle: got Keaton his start in early films like Butcher Boy, reportedly filmed the day Keaton first stepped onto a set. He said "Buster lived inside the camera." "Cinema of Attractions." a phrase coined by film historian Tom Gunning to describe the way the early years of cinema (1895 to 1913, more or less) achieved success by way of gags, stunts, special effects and other dazzling technological innovations--rather than plot or character development,. John and Dana rave about Keaton's last great film (age 33!), The Cameraman (1928) and deprecate the later silents (with a silent caveat for the pancake scene Grand Slam Opera). Mabel Normand: Arbuckle's longtime collaborator and briefly a rising director--Charlie Chaplin kneecapped her at a crucial moment in her career. Dana singles out for special praise Fatty and Mabel Adrift (1916) starring Luke, the first canine movie star. Singing in the Rain as a MGM-friendly myth-making explanation for Clara Bow's eclipse (and the famous vocal failure moment: "I can't stand 'im") Steamboat Bill Jr. ( 1928, Buster Keaton feature) "Keaton's most mature movie" says Dana. "Poguemahone is like a high dive: The toughest part of reading it might be convincing your feet to leave the board. Once you've done that, gravity does the rest." —New York Times The Festival's Neil Wilson sits down with Patrick McCabe for a conversation about his latest, Poguemahone , an epic reinvention of the verse novel that combines Modernist fragmentation and Beat spontaneity with Irish folklore, then douses it in whiskey and sets it on fire. Poguemahone is a swirling, psychedelic, bleakly funny fugue by the Booker-shortlisted author of The Butcher Boy and Breakfast on Pluto. Una Fogarty, suffering from dementia in a seaside nursing home, would be all alone without her brother Dan, whose epic free-verse monologue tells their family story. Exile from Ireland and immigrant life in England. Their mother's trials as a call girl. Young Una's search for love in a seemingly haunted hippie squat, and the two-timing Scottish stoner poet she'll never get over. Now she sits outside in the sun as her memories unspool from Dan's mouth and his own role in the tale grows ever stranger— and more sinister. Books are available from our friends at Perfect Books.
