Change Makers: Leadership, Good Business, Ideas and Innovation
In this episode of Change Makers, Michael Hayman is joined by journalist and author Cathy Newman. Best known as one of Channel 4's leading broadcasters, Cathy shares the lesser-known story of her lifelong love affair with music - and it's one with strings attached. From a childhood spark - a stray violin brought home during a bout of chickenpox - to performing in the parliamentary String Quartet, music remained a constant companion. Yet journalism became her stage, and Cathy reflects on the rhythm, focus, and listening both disciplines demand. Recorded at the Royal Albert Hall in collaboration with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Cathy reflects on her early musical experiences, the challenges of being a woman in media, and her advocacy for music education through Music for All. Along the way, she shows how passion, perseverance, and listening deeply - whether to a piece of music or a person - can shape both life and work.
Nigel Farage has put mass deportations at the centre of his new immigration plan — promising to detain and remove hundreds of thousands of asylum seekers from the UK.While Reform UK currently has only four MPs, polling suggests they could win the next election and be in a position to implement this. It's a striking escalation in the rhetoric around immigration — raising the question of whether this marks a turning point in British politics.Has anything like this been attempted before, is it even possible, and how does it fit into the long, often heated history of immigration policy in the UK?On this episode of The Fourcast, Cathy Newman is joined by Jacqueline McKenzie, a partner at the human rights law firm Leigh Day who specialises in immigration and asylum cases, and journalist and author David Goodhart who is the head of demography, immigration and integration at the Policy Exchange think tank.

What comes first - a peace deal or a peace prize? The war rages on in Gaza - another 40 Palestinians were killed overnight in Israeli airstrikes, but Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been unable to thrash out a ceasefire deal despite two days of talks in Washington, though he did nominate Donald Trump for the Nobel peace prize. Meanwhile in Gaza families continue to struggle for food and water amid the constant bombardments and with an aid system that is failing to deliver. Israeli officials say they are working with the UN and other bodies to “ensure necessary aid crosses the border”. So who is to blame for this catastrophe? And what needs to be done to alleviate it? In this episode of The Fourcast, Cathy Newman speaks to James Elder, global spokesperson for UNICEF, the United Nations agency providing humanitarian aid to children worldwide. He is just back from Gaza - his fifth visit to the territory since the war between Israel and Hamas began in October 2023.

Kemi Badenoch is the new leader of the Conservative Party after beating Robert Jenrick in what is an historic moment - the first black female leader of one of the UK's main political parties. But does she have any chance of winning the next election? Will she even hang on that long with the Tories' history of ditching leaders who don't deliver? Are the Labour Party the real winners here? On this episode of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman is joined by former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, former Conservative MP Laura Farris, who lost her seat to the Liberal Democrats in July, and Luke Tryll, Executive Director of the polling firm More in Common. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Ka Yee Mak, Rob Thomson.

The Morgan McSweeney-Sue Gray saga, endless stories about freebies and gloomy economic forecasts ahead of Rachel Reeve's first budget - so, how badly have Keir Starmer's first 100 days gone and could the next 100 actually be worse? On this week's episode of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman is joined by Thangam Debbonaire, who was set to be a leading cabinet minister in Starmer's government before she lost her seat in a shock result at the election - Faiza Shaheen, who was a rising star in the Labour Party before a public spat led to her running as an independent in July - and Channel 4 News' senior political correspondent Paul McNamara.
Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Britain's first Muslim cabinet minister, has long been an outspoken critic of her own party over its attitudes towards Islam. Last week, after an investigation was launched against her over a post on social media, she resigned the whip saying it is a reflection of ‘how far right' the Conservative Party has moved since her time in office. Warsi has just released a book, “Muslims Don't Matter”, which is an impassioned polemic setting out her views on the hypocrisy and double standards applied to British Muslims. In this episode of The Political Fourcast, she speaks to Cathy Newman about the Israel-Gaza war, Islamophobia in the UK and the Conservative Party's "disturbing" shift to the extremist right. Produced by Silvia Maresca and Calum Fraser.
Despite warnings to keep it clean, Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly have been quietly tearing chunks out of each other as they vie to be the next Tory leader at this year's Conservative Party conference in Birmingham. But, what is the future of the Conservative Party? Pivot harder to the right to win back Reform voters or tact to the centre? Can any of the leadership candidates haul the party back from the brink? Or is the past the future? Boris Johnson's autobiography is helpfully being serialised in the Daily Mail just in time to overshadow events here. So, to dig into all this and more for this special edition of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman spoke to two party giants. Sir Graham Brady was the chairman of the influential 1922 Committee of back benchers for almost 15 years and he's just released a book called Kingmaker giving an insiders account of the Tory leadership campaigns he presided over. She also caught up with Grant Shapps, who's held several cabinet positions over the years and could have been a candidate for the next Tory leader if he hadn't lost his seat along with a huge swathe of his colleagues in the election. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson.
Conservative Party leadership favourites Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick have found themselves embroiled in controversy over comments they've made during the Tory Party conference, while rivals Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly haven't missed a beat to capitalise. Meanwhile, the latest polling show's Badenoch's lead over Jenrick amongst party members has narrowed. And so the future of the UK's most successful political party remains up in the air. In this special episode of the Political Fourcast from Birmingham, Cathy Newman is joined by former Deputy Prime Minister and Liz Truss ally Thérèse Coffey, former Education Secretary Gillian Keegan and Channel 4 News' political editor Gary Gibbon. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson

My guest this week is the first female main presenter of Channel 4 news, Cathy Newman. Cathy joined Channel 4 News as political correspondent in 2006 after more than a decade working in newspapers, including The Independent, Financial Times and Washington Post. Her own personal sliding doors moment, sexual harassment and discovering she was paid less than the bloke at the next desk. On Wednesday, the body of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will travel in a public procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, carried on a gun carriage, with King Charles leading the procession behind his mother's coffin, which will be draped in the Royal Standard. Once in Westminster Hall, the coffin, topped with the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre, will lie in state for four days, with each corner guarded 24-hours-a-day by soldiers from units that serve the Royal Household. When the Queen Mother lay in state two decades ago, thousands lined to view her coffin. Many more mourners are expected to pay their last respects to our longest reigning monarch before the funeral on Monday. In this episode of the Fourcast we speak to our presenter, Cathy Newman, who broke the news of the Queen's death on Channel 4. We look back on the historic days we have witnessed since and ahead to a new era under King Charles. Sources: AP Producer: Freya Pickford
It took seven months of Partygate, a disgraced MP, 50 resignations, one sacking, but it did eventually happen. He never said the word resign, and he's still sticking around inside Number 10, but the days of Boris Johnson's premiership are certainly numbered, while his days as Tory leader are done and dusted. Today, our presenter and investigations editor, Cathy Newman, unpacks why Johnson finally decided to step down, what state he leaves the party and country and who might be the person to pick up the pieces. This podcast was recorded on Saturday June 9. Producer: Freya Pickford Sources: The Independent
Why are creative partnerships so powerful? How can we work on multiple creative projects at one time? In this interview, we talk to the award-winning investigative journalist and Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman, we discuss her non-fiction book It Takes Two: A History of the Couples Who Dared to Be Different which is all about the power of collaboration. We deconstruct how she writes news stories, books, and her research process. We also explore the idea of creative partnerships from Beyonce and JayZ to Clement Attlee and Winston Churchill, how these partnerships are like a ‘dance' and how we might spot our own creative collaborator. *ABOUT CATHY NEWMANCathy Newman is an award-winning investigative journalist and Channel 4 News' first female main presenter. Jordan Peterson took the intellectual world by storm in 2016, bursting on the scene in a way not seen by a non-leftist thinker since Allan Bloom in the late 1980s. His idiosyncratic mix of Jungian psychology, existential philosophy, and common-sense self-help advice (also lobsters!) as expressed in his best-seller 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, is hard to sort out at times. Glenn Ellmers, one of our favorite recent authors (who also got a long notice from Thomas Byrne Edsall’s latest New York Times column this week), took a deep dive into “the Jordan Peterson phenomenon” in the Claremont Review of Books back in 2018, having attended one of Peterson’s live appearances in Washington DC. Above all, we marvel at how Peterson cooly flummoxes his critics and media interlocutors, as in the justly notorious TV interview with the obtuse Cathy Newman in Britain in 2018. One thing the enthusiastic response to Peterson demonstrates is how large is the void of sensible intellectual and moral thought available especially to young people. Peterson’s capacious and eclectic approach to communicating is an implicit reproach to conservatives who reside too narrowly in policy wonkery and stale cliches. Can Peterson be imitated or replicated? Probably not, but there are some general lessons to be learned from his example. Did you know there is actually a Jordan Peterson drinking song? It was the obvious choice for exit music for a podcast organized around whisky.
Sir Keir Starmer is approaching two years as Labour leader. He has sought to rebuild the party after the divisions of Brexit, the chaos of Corbyn and the disaster of the 2019 election. Labour would need to gain more than 100 seats to claim an outright majority next time the British public goes to the polls. So are his plans for change working or is he simply benefitting from Partygate scandals under Boris Johnson? Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman talks about her recent sit down with Sir Keir Starmer and her assessment on whether the former lawyer has the passion and vision to make Labour a party of government once again.

@Rebel Wisdom did a video interview with Jonathan Rowson. Rowson did an interview with Jordan Peterson right after the Cathy Newman interview that really launched @Jordan B Peterson to new heights of fame and public notoriety. Here David Fuller and Rowson do some processing of the Jordan Peterson phenomenon now 3 years later. I think there were some key things going on and doing the commentary afforded me some new insight. News with Paddy O'Connell including former Speaker of the House John Bercow on cries of sleaze and 80 year old archive of the Liverpool blitz on the week of it's anniversary. Is Dr Jordan Peterson about to convert to Christianity? If so, it’s a big deal. The earnest but sardonic Canadian psychologist is already the most effective advocate for the moral precepts of Christianity in the English-speaking media. But, until now, his penetrating exposition of the Bible has been inspired more by Jungian symbolism than by actual religious belief. That may be about to change, albeit not in the happiest of circumstances. In recent months Peterson has suffered from a combination of medical conditions that have left him in wretched pain, both physical and psychological. This has left him wondering whether it’s time to submit to the dogmatic assertions of orthodox Christianity. He explains his complex reasoning in an extraordinary podcast, in which he presents himself to his friend Jonathan Pageau, an Eastern Orthodox Christian, as something close to a broken man. He certainly sounds and looks like one. The contrast with the Jordan Peterson who politely humiliated the sneering Cathy Newman of Channel 4 News is excruciating. Peterson will survive his crisis, I’m sure. Whether he will convert is, of course, impossible to say; he doesn’t know himself. But my guest this week, Dr Gavin Ashenden, is well qualified to describe his dilemma. Gavin was himself a disciple of Jung before what he describes as an encounter with demons led him back to Christianity. He makes the point that, even if Peterson doesn’t take the leap of faith, he has already led more people into that faith than any number of dim-witted or intellectually cowardly bishops. Please don’t miss this episode.

Good morning, folks, and welcome to the tenth issue of Bright Morning. We say this quite often, but it's hard to believe that we are ten weeks into this project. Before we kick off, we would like to offer some words of appreciation and reflection. This project kicked off with an idea: would we be interested in starting a newsletter? Neither one of us even really liked reading newsletters, and after we talked about it for a bit, we quickly realized why: we had not found anything interesting to read. Obviously our sample was not representative, but based on what we had seen, we thought that newsletters only offered small snapshots of stories without any probes for thought. As well, a lot of newsletters out there only offered cookie-cutter, boring, and faux-progressive talking points. And out of this realization, we found an opportunity. What if we could try to do it better? What if we could talk about the big stories of the week through the lens of our own conservative and classical liberal values? Is there an audience out there who would be receptive to this ambition? It turns out that there was. And so, ten weeks into the development of Bright Morning, we believe that we have landed on something that works. We have learned a lot in the past ten weeks, and we look forward to continuing to learn. We hope that while we are satisfying our need to write about what is important to us, we are also meeting your need for honest and authentic analysis. We really are thankful for your continued support of our project.Having said that, let us now turn our heads to some of the stand-out absurdities from the week, shall we?| CULTUREJordan Peterson returns, and so do the hit-pieces The Nitty GrittyOutrageously famous Canadian psychologist, Dr. Jordan Peterson, appears to be back in action after a long hiatus from the public eyeNow that he's back, so are the critiques
