Victims groomed and raped by gangs have told the BBC's Senior UK Correspondent Sima Kotecha that they are adamant the crime is still happening to girls across the country. Nuala was joined by Durham Law Professor Clare McGlynn to hear more about what this means, and Channel 4's Cathy Newman, who was a victim of deepfakes herself, gives her thoughts.Victoria Melluish is a listener who wrote to us to highlight women working in environmentally hostile environments and to encourage more women to get out in the field. Victoria is currently employed as a marine mammal specialist and expedition guide on a cruise expedition ship. She says, 'I'm 30 and I work in the Arctic and Antarctic, and I often get asked how I manage having endometriosis while driving Zodiac boats around glaciers and marine megafauna.' Nuala spoke to her about her work.2025 is a big year for former Strictly professional Oti Mabuse who is judging Dancing on Ice, then going on tour and publishing her first adult novel. A new law change has made the creation of explicit deepfakes illegal, with those found guilty facing up to two years in prison. Nuala McGovern is joined by Durham Law Professor Clare McGlynn to hear more about what this means, and Channel 4's Cathy Newman, who was a victim of deepfakes herself, gives her thoughts. The title of the book refers to the young, working class women of the 1920s who were destined for a life in service unless they took other, less respectable, opportunities. Like joining real-life all female criminal gang The Forty Elephants, who were famous for their sophisticated shoplifting scams and their hard-partying ways.Victoria Melluish is a listener who wrote to us to highlight women working in environmentally hostile environments and to encourage more women to get out in the field. Kemi Badenoch is the new leader of the Conservative Party after beating Robert Jenrick in what is an historic moment - the first black female leader of one of the UK's main political parties. But does she have any chance of winning the next election? Will she even hang on that long with the Tories' history of ditching leaders who don't deliver? Are the Labour Party the real winners here? On this episode of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman is joined by former chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng, former Conservative MP Laura Farris, who lost her seat to the Liberal Democrats in July, and Luke Tryll, Executive Director of the polling firm More in Common. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Ka Yee Mak, Rob Thomson.

The Morgan McSweeney-Sue Gray saga, endless stories about freebies and gloomy economic forecasts ahead of Rachel Reeve's first budget - so, how badly have Keir Starmer's first 100 days gone and could the next 100 actually be worse? On this week's episode of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman is joined by Thangam Debbonaire, who was set to be a leading cabinet minister in Starmer's government before she lost her seat in a shock result at the election - Faiza Shaheen, who was a rising star in the Labour Party before a public spat led to her running as an independent in July - and Channel 4 News' senior political correspondent Paul McNamara.
Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Britain's first Muslim cabinet minister, has long been an outspoken critic of her own party over its attitudes towards Islam. Last week, after an investigation was launched against her over a post on social media, she resigned the whip saying it is a reflection of ‘how far right' the Conservative Party has moved since her time in office. Warsi has just released a book, “Muslims Don't Matter”, which is an impassioned polemic setting out her views on the hypocrisy and double standards applied to British Muslims. In this episode of The Political Fourcast, she speaks to Cathy Newman about the Israel-Gaza war, Islamophobia in the UK and the Conservative Party's "disturbing" shift to the extremist right. Produced by Silvia Maresca and Calum Fraser.
Despite warnings to keep it clean, Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly have been quietly tearing chunks out of each other as they vie to be the next Tory leader at this year's Conservative Party conference in Birmingham. But, what is the future of the Conservative Party? Pivot harder to the right to win back Reform voters or tact to the centre? Can any of the leadership candidates haul the party back from the brink? Or is the past the future? Boris Johnson's autobiography is helpfully being serialised in the Daily Mail just in time to overshadow events here. So, to dig into all this and more for this special edition of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman spoke to two party giants. Sir Graham Brady was the chairman of the influential 1922 Committee of back benchers for almost 15 years and he's just released a book called Kingmaker giving an insiders account of the Tory leadership campaigns he presided over. She also caught up with Grant Shapps, who's held several cabinet positions over the years and could have been a candidate for the next Tory leader if he hadn't lost his seat along with a huge swathe of his colleagues in the election. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson.
Conservative Party leadership favourites Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick have found themselves embroiled in controversy over comments they've made during the Tory Party conference, while rivals Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly haven't missed a beat to capitalise. Meanwhile, the latest polling show's Badenoch's lead over Jenrick amongst party members has narrowed. And so the future of the UK's most successful political party remains up in the air. In this special episode of the Political Fourcast from Birmingham, Cathy Newman is joined by former Deputy Prime Minister and Liz Truss ally Thérèse Coffey, former Education Secretary Gillian Keegan and Channel 4 News' political editor Gary Gibbon. Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson

My guest this week is the first female main presenter of Channel 4 news, Cathy Newman. Cathy joined Channel 4 News as political correspondent in 2006 after more than a decade working in newspapers, including The Independent, Financial Times and Washington Post. She is an award-winning investigative journalist whose scoops include the sexual harassment allegations against the liberal democrat peer Lord Rennard. That's the first four days of the week! On the fifth, she hosts her own show on Times Radio. Oh, and on the side, she's a pretty accomplished amateur violinist. But Google her name, and will you see all those achievements? Nope, just reams and reams of the kind of internet abuse that will be familiar to almost every woman in the public eye.Cathy joined me to talk about her new book, The Ladder, a collection of wisdom from women who've climbed it - and why “the ladder” doesn't work for women or minorities. Her own personal sliding doors moment, sexual harassment and discovering she was paid less than the bloke at the next desk. We also discussed learning not to give a monkeys about internet trolls, menopause, heavy periods, HRT and why turning 50 really does feel like a superpower to her.* You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Ladder by Cathy Newman and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me.* If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com• And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com• The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. On Wednesday, the body of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II will travel in a public procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, carried on a gun carriage, with King Charles leading the procession behind his mother's coffin, which will be draped in the Royal Standard. Once in Westminster Hall, the coffin, topped with the Imperial State Crown, orb and sceptre, will lie in state for four days, with each corner guarded 24-hours-a-day by soldiers from units that serve the Royal Household. When the Queen Mother lay in state two decades ago, thousands lined to view her coffin. Many more mourners are expected to pay their last respects to our longest reigning monarch before the funeral on Monday. In this episode of the Fourcast we speak to our presenter, Cathy Newman, who broke the news of the Queen's death on Channel 4. We look back on the historic days we have witnessed since and ahead to a new era under King Charles. Sources: AP Producer: Freya Pickford
It took seven months of Partygate, a disgraced MP, 50 resignations, one sacking, but it did eventually happen. He never said the word resign, and he's still sticking around inside Number 10, but the days of Boris Johnson's premiership are certainly numbered, while his days as Tory leader are done and dusted. Today, our presenter and investigations editor, Cathy Newman, unpacks why Johnson finally decided to step down, what state he leaves the party and country and who might be the person to pick up the pieces. This podcast was recorded on Saturday June 9. Producer: Freya Pickford Sources: The Independent
Why are creative partnerships so powerful? How can we work on multiple creative projects at one time? In this interview, we talk to the award-winning investigative journalist and Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman, we discuss her non-fiction book It Takes Two: A History of the Couples Who Dared to Be Different which is all about the power of collaboration. We deconstruct how she writes news stories, books, and her research process. We also explore the idea of creative partnerships from Beyonce and JayZ to Clement Attlee and Winston Churchill, how these partnerships are like a ‘dance' and how we might spot our own creative collaborator. *ABOUT CATHY NEWMANCathy Newman is an award-winning investigative journalist and Channel 4 News' first female main presenter. Jordan Peterson took the intellectual world by storm in 2016, bursting on the scene in a way not seen by a non-leftist thinker since Allan Bloom in the late 1980s. His idiosyncratic mix of Jungian psychology, existential philosophy, and common-sense self-help advice (also lobsters!) as expressed in his best-seller 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, is hard to sort out at times. Glenn Ellmers, one of our favorite recent authors (who also got a long notice from Thomas Byrne Edsall’s latest New York Times column this week), took a deep dive into “the Jordan Peterson phenomenon” in the Claremont Review of Books back in 2018, having attended one of Peterson’s live appearances in Washington DC. Above all, we marvel at how Peterson cooly flummoxes his critics and media interlocutors, as in the justly notorious TV interview with the obtuse Cathy Newman in Britain in 2018. One thing the enthusiastic response to Peterson demonstrates is how large is the void of sensible intellectual and moral thought available especially to young people. Peterson’s capacious and eclectic approach to communicating is an implicit reproach to conservatives who reside too narrowly in policy wonkery and stale cliches. Can Peterson be imitated or replicated? Probably not, but there are some general lessons to be learned from his example. Did you know there is actually a Jordan Peterson drinking song? It was the obvious choice for exit music for a podcast organized around whisky.
Sir Keir Starmer is approaching two years as Labour leader. He has sought to rebuild the party after the divisions of Brexit, the chaos of Corbyn and the disaster of the 2019 election. Labour would need to gain more than 100 seats to claim an outright majority next time the British public goes to the polls. So are his plans for change working or is he simply benefitting from Partygate scandals under Boris Johnson? Channel 4 News presenter Cathy Newman talks about her recent sit down with Sir Keir Starmer and her assessment on whether the former lawyer has the passion and vision to make Labour a party of government once again.

News with Paddy O'Connell including former Speaker of the House John Bercow on cries of sleaze and 80 year old archive of the Liverpool blitz on the week of it's anniversary. The sound of the peak of the dawn chorus, and a personal reflection on a week's reporting in Delhi by the BBC's Devina Gupta. Reviewing the news: Cathy Newman, Sir Anthony Seldon and Darren McGarvey.
Is Dr Jordan Peterson about to convert to Christianity? If so, it’s a big deal. The earnest but sardonic Canadian psychologist is already the most effective advocate for the moral precepts of Christianity in the English-speaking media. But, until now, his penetrating exposition of the Bible has been inspired more by Jungian symbolism than by actual religious belief. That may be about to change, albeit not in the happiest of circumstances. In recent months Peterson has suffered from a combination of medical conditions that have left him in wretched pain, both physical and psychological. This has left him wondering whether it’s time to submit to the dogmatic assertions of orthodox Christianity. He explains his complex reasoning in an extraordinary podcast, in which he presents himself to his friend Jonathan Pageau, an Eastern Orthodox Christian, as something close to a broken man. He certainly sounds and looks like one. The contrast with the Jordan Peterson who politely humiliated the sneering Cathy Newman of Channel 4 News is excruciating. Peterson will survive his crisis, I’m sure. Whether he will convert is, of course, impossible to say; he doesn’t know himself. But my guest this week, Dr Gavin Ashenden, is well qualified to describe his dilemma. Gavin was himself a disciple of Jung before what he describes as an encounter with demons led him back to Christianity. He makes the point that, even if Peterson doesn’t take the leap of faith, he has already led more people into that faith than any number of dim-witted or intellectually cowardly bishops. Please don’t miss this episode.

Good morning, folks, and welcome to the tenth issue of Bright Morning. We say this quite often, but it's hard to believe that we are ten weeks into this project. Before we kick off, we would like to offer some words of appreciation and reflection. This project kicked off with an idea: would we be interested in starting a newsletter? Neither one of us even really liked reading newsletters, and after we talked about it for a bit, we quickly realized why: we had not found anything interesting to read. Obviously our sample was not representative, but based on what we had seen, we thought that newsletters only offered small snapshots of stories without any probes for thought. As well, a lot of newsletters out there only offered cookie-cutter, boring, and faux-progressive talking points. And out of this realization, we found an opportunity. What if we could try to do it better? What if we could talk about the big stories of the week through the lens of our own conservative and classical liberal values? Is there an audience out there who would be receptive to this ambition? It turns out that there was. And so, ten weeks into the development of Bright Morning, we believe that we have landed on something that works. We have learned a lot in the past ten weeks, and we look forward to continuing to learn. We hope that while we are satisfying our need to write about what is important to us, we are also meeting your need for honest and authentic analysis. We really are thankful for your continued support of our project.Having said that, let us now turn our heads to some of the stand-out absurdities from the week, shall we?| CULTUREJordan Peterson returns, and so do the hit-pieces The Nitty GrittyOutrageously famous Canadian psychologist, Dr. Jordan Peterson, appears to be back in action after a long hiatus from the public eyeNow that he's back, so are the critiques

We first published the story Fishing in the Fog of Covid-19, by Cathy Newman, online about a month ago. Today, we are publishing an audio version of the story, which is read by Jeanne Craig, a longtime editor in the boating and fishing world. It tells the story of a woman who is so frustrated by not being able to fish her favorite waters that she assembled her travel rod in the alley beside her apartment and proceeded to cast into an asphalt river — and to dream. We feel the story has a special power and poignancy when read aloud. We hope you enjoy it. Bill Sisson, Editor-in-Chief Anglers Journal

If you have been anywhere on the internet for the last couple of years you will have bound to have seen Jordan Peterson the Canadian Psychologist and public intellectual appearing in your news feed. From the infamous conversation with Cathy Newman, his opposition to bill C16 and his public debates and talks. If you have been to any book store you would have also seen copies of his book 12 rules for life which has sold 3 million copies world wide and topped the best seller lists across the world. What most people may not know is that those 12 rules were part of a list of 40. In this episode I discuss the first 20 of those ideas and I give my opinion on what I think about those rules. Enjoy.
Our guest this week is journalist and Channel 4 news presenter, Cathy Newman. After a decade on Fleet Street, Cathy moved to Channel 4 news in 2006, where she has become well known for her investigative scoops and interviewing expertise. Cathy has just released a book - Bloody Brilliant Women, which tells the stories of pioneering women who we may not know as much about as we should. We talked about her book - and everything from combatting worries to curly hair at her home in London, last month.
Channel 4 news presenter Cathy Newman on her new book called Bloody Brilliant Women, interviewing in the era of fake news, her inability to use her own oven, and the rarity of curly hair in broadcasting.
Like most people, I’d never heard of Jordan Peterson until a short time ago. In my case, the first signal of his arrival on the cultural scene was a friend’s series of Facebook posts vividly denouncing him as a reactionary cult-like leader. Seeing a Canadian psychology professor be the subject of such alarm piqued my curiosity. As an American ex-academic, I tend to stereotype Canadians as almost laughably polite, and professors as largely contained in their own hyper-specialized, politically irrelevant bubbles. The vision of a wild-eyed Canadian psych prof with a fanatical alt-right following on YouTube was an intriguing challenge to my priors. Soon, I found myself going down the Peterson rabbit-hole with countless others. I listened to several of his lectures on reinterpreting Bible stories as archetypical myths. Contradicting my friend’s warnings of hate-filled right-wing propaganda, I found Peterson’s discussions intellectually engaging, personally meaningful, and a refreshing departure from the standard discourse on such issues. I read up on Peterson’s battles over Canadian hate speech legislation and watched his infamous Cathy Newman interview. Here again, I found Peterson’s commentary to be largely thoughtful and thought-provoking. I tuned into his podcast discussions with Sam Harris, … The post Jordan Peterson and the Failure of the Left appeared first on Quillette.
Like most cultural sensations who seem to have come out of nowhere, Canadian psychology professor Jordan Peterson has, in fact, been building a large and passionate following in various corners of the internet over the past several years. But it was his recent interview with the BBC’s Cathy Newman that went viral and introduced him to a new level of fame—not only as an opponent of political correctness and the progressive Left, but as the teacher of a bracingly down-to-earth vision of practical wisdom for living. Many Christians aren’t sure what to make of Jordan Peterson and his "12 Rules for Life". In this episode, we talk to David Höhne about the foundations and main elements of Peterson’s program, and how Christians should understand and respond to his ideas. I'm introducing a new feature to The Long Form podcast, where I'll post short interviews with friends and public figures about the book that they are in the middle of. I don't want polished hot takes about a book someone has finished and fully digested. I want mid-process description of what sparks are flying around people's heads midstream through the book. And I love to know the backstory of how and why people start books. What intrigued them? What attracted them? And what are they getting out of it right now? I'm starting out with a look at one of the books I'm reading, "12 Rules for Life" by Jordan Peterson. It was while I was watching Channel 4 news presenter Cathy Newman’s spectacularly disastrous interview with University of Toronto professor Jordan Peterson that what was wrong with much of journalism today crystallized in my brain. I’d been oscillating between anger and frustration watching Canadian media fail again and again – and often in jaw-dropping fashion – in reporting on Peterson and I couldn’t quite establish what was going wrong. Peterson is the teacher and clinical psychologist who burst onto the scene after making a video decrying the government’s Bill C-16 which compelled the use of invented gender pronouns (ze and zir, etc) for non-binary and transgender people. Peterson connected the “compelled speech” of the legislation (and the unscientific instantiation of gender as a non-biologically-correlated social construct) to radical leftist ideology and authoritarian governments. In an admittedly complex and controversial argument, Peterson blamed the spread of postmodernism within the academy for the rise of both identity politics and the emergence of the illiberal left. Many of the stories about him were shallow or missed the point, … The post The Peterson Principle: Intellectual Complexity and Journalistic Incompetence appeared first on Quillette.

Recently making the headlines after a combative interview about the gender pay gap with Channel 4’s Cathy Newman, my guest today is Jordan Peterson, who discusses with me some of his 12 Rules for Life.

Jordan Peterson has been called “the most influential public intellectual in the Western world right now” by the New York Times, “the world’s most sought after psychologist” by Psychology Today, and “rock star” by most every other pundit—admiringly by fans, sarcastically by critics. Whatever he is, Jordan Bernd Peterson is crushing it. As of this writing, his YouTube channel has close to 800,000 subscribers; his videoed lectures on the interface between psychology and the biblical narrative are virally shared; his Patreon account snags over $70,000 per month; and his live lectures and debates sell out everywhere. But what recently supercharged his notoriety (?) was his patient take-down of England’s Channel 4 presenter Cathy Newman during a contentious interview about the so-called gender pay gap. If you missed that slow-motion car wreck, it’s here. As of this writing, it generated over six million views and pushed a worldwide audience in his direction very quickly—and providentially, just in time for the release of his new book, 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos. In this interview (my fourth with him, the first in person), I get into some of the questions I many of my listeners have had about his worldview. Is he a Christian? Agnostic seeker? Lapsed Catholic academic trying to climb back home? We go there. Peterson’s Bible exegesis approaches the sacred text from surprising angles, mainly drawn from Jungian insights into archetypes and mythopoetic interpretations of the events and players of salvation history. He is a gifted storyteller with an intense way of getting to the inner truths of the outer stories. If you’re looking for black and white answers that bear the whiff of complete certainty, try a dogmatic theologian. Peterson is acutely allergic to tossing out glib answers to questions he believes need to be deeply pondered before wading into premature answers. In sense, many of his lectures seem to be orally delivered first drafts of something he might write down later and polish. He clarifies his own thinking as he goes. For people (especially mothers and fathers) who are concerned about the aggressive neo-Marxist social engineering on college campuses and about the rise of the dictatorship of relativism, Peterson’s courage and perseverance in the face of intense pushback from defenders of the academic status quo is downright inspiring. 12 Rules for Life is not short, and is not for everyone. His eponymous rules embody the kind of tough love messaging that was common in say, pre-1960s America. In a post-modern era of politically correct bromides beloved by feminists and their beta male cheerleader, Peterson offers strong lye, albeit peppered with an offbeat sense of humor. He knows that some medicine now and again needs a spoonful of sugar to go down. In this episode, you will learn How his role in the battle for free speech in Canada with the passage of Bill C-16, which criminalized “misgendering” someone, ended up launching his new career as a social critic and surrogate father to millions of millennials. Why PTSD is as much about the realization of the evils of which one is capable as about life-threatening experiences one has had. His thought process in analyzing the foundational miracle of Christianity, the Resurrection of Christ. The ways in which the West is still in something of a hangover from Soviet Communism. How suffering can be an introduction to experiences of profound meaning and sensitivity to the pain of others. The enduring influence of his father (and former teacher) Walter Peterson. Why failing to speak up against evil is far more costly than actually doing so. Resources mentioned in this episode 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, by Dr. Jordan Peterson. More Gulag Archipelago to kick us off into a brief aside about Jordan Peterson and Cathy Newman, who you may not need me to remind you of, but let us consider the lobster, possibly for a bit too long. Then it's time to move onto the use of Asians as a sweet visual gag... I'm one to talk, I'm like a walking visual gag. And finally I top it off with an observation on the recentness of clean water and how everyone that ever lived in history before then was drunk.
We discuss rule number one in Dr. Jordan B. Peterson's book "12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos." The rule is "Stand Up Straight with Your Shoulders Back." it seems simple, but there is a lot to discuss in this chapter. What do lobsters have to do with human confidence? Do men need to be dominant to get the girl? What about women? And most importantly why do we need to to follow laws and rules in the first place? What if we just "live and let live." In this we will bring up a famous poem by AE Housman, "The Laws of God, The Laws of Men," The laws of God, the laws of man, He may keep that will and can; Now I: let God and man decree Laws for themselves and not for me; And if my ways are not as theirs Let them mind their own affairs. Their deeds I judge and much condemn, Yet when did I make laws for them? Please yourselves, say I, and they Need only look the other way. But no, they will not; they must still Wrest their neighbour to their will, And make me dance as they desire With jail and gallows and hell-fire. And how am I to face the odds Of man's bedevilment and God's? I, a stranger and afraid In a world I never made. They will be master, right or wrong; Though both are foolish, both are strong, And since, my soul, we cannot fly To Saturn or Mercury, Keep we must, if keep we can, These foreign laws of God and man.

Are women too objectified in society? And if so why? Is it wrong? We discuss how identity politics as a result of the disintegrative acid of political correctness and the incorrectly applied notion of free speech are leading to a very dangerous far left where an extreme few think they have the moral high ground in representing everyone of their type. This emotion driven ideal will always lead to disaster as it did in the time of Stalin and Mao because there is no logic to it. Being emotion driven it also seeks rapid change but the glue of our society is there for a reason and attempts to unstick it rapidly will have worrying consequences. We discuss the scientific facts and figures that show that men and women are physically, hormonally, emotionally different and that therefore seeking the same outcome for them regardless of their individual strengths and weaknesses will be suboptimal and not the nirvana that the identitists seek.A simple example is that more males are psychopaths and that there is a higher proportion of men versus women in prison and as CEOs. All being equal the identitists should be asking why men are over represented in prison. The fact is that it is the nature of the sexes especially at the extremes that determine some of the observed differences we see in society.Furthermore by attempting to unstick the glue of society which is based on religious ideals we run the risk not of further equality but of chaos and unhappiness. One of the reasons that the channel 4 presenter Cathy Newman was so aggressively feminist with Professor Jordan Petersen was that a lot of what he said refered directly to her. She even agreed with him when he suggested her male style higher level of disagreeableness was responsible for her success. We suspect what really upset her was the quite inference that she was also unhappy in her personal relationship as a power woman with an overgrown infant of a man. Relationships are not about competition and dominance that is increasingly the case but about equality and teamwork which need to be worked at by both sides.Simple solid management principles apply. Identify some ones strengths and weaknesses and encourage them to follow their strengths and steer them away from their weaknesses. Forcing everyone into the same channels is actually disrespecting people and ironically having the opposite result to which the identitists are seeking. Afterall self awareness and equal rights for self determination will not lead to the same outcomes for all but it will be the better outcomes for individuals as well as society in general

Every atheist's favorite Christian, Jordan B. Peterson, went on Channel 4 News and had a heated exchange with Cathy Newman. Though she made some good points, Newman's technique centered around replying with "..so you're saying.." and then straw man Peterson. So what was he actually saying? Is there a better way of trying to engage with people like Peterson or should we not bother at all?
