Trump plans a big ol' parade. Ben riffs. Charles Henderson returns to talk the state of America on Memorial Day. Including...Trump's newfound "pacifism". Why Kamala Harris lost. Would Biden have done any better? Royko's Boss. The GI Bill then and now. Congressman John Rankin's not-so-pretty legacy. And Ben's Rhode Island past. Charles Henderson, who leads the cybersecurity services division at Coalfire, shares how the company is reimagining offensive and defensive operations through a programmatic lens that prioritizes outcomes over checkboxes. His team, made up of practitioners with deep experience and creative drive, brings offensive testing and exposure management together with defensive services and managed offerings to address full-spectrum cybersecurity needs. The focus isn't on commoditized services—it's on what actually makes a difference. At the heart of the conversation is the idea that cybersecurity is a team sport. Henderson draws parallels between the improvisation of music and the tactics of both attackers and defenders. Both require rhythm, creativity, and cohesion. The myth of the lone hero doesn't hold up anymore—effective cybersecurity programs are driven by collaboration across specialties and by combining services in ways that amplify their value.Coalfire's evolution reflects this shift. It's not just about running a penetration test or red team operation in isolation. It's about integrating those efforts into a broader mission-focused program, tailored to real threats and measured against what matters most. Henderson emphasizes that CISOs are no longer content with piecemeal assessments; they're seeking simplified, strategic programs with measurable outcomes. The conversation also touches on the importance of storytelling in cybersecurity reporting. Henderson underscores the need for findings to be communicated in ways that resonate with technical teams, security leaders, and the board. It's about enabling CISOs to own the narrative, armed with context, clarity, and confidence.Henderson's reflections on the early days of hacker culture—when gatherings like HoCon and early Def Cons were more about curiosity and camaraderie than business—bring a human dimension to the discussion. That same passion still fuels many practitioners today, and Coalfire is committed to nurturing it through talent development and internships, helping the next generation find their voice, their challenge, and yes, even their hacker handle. This episode offers a look at how to build programs, teams, and mindsets that are ready to lead—not follow—on the cybersecurity front.Learn more about Coalfire: https://itspm.ag/coalfire-yj4wNote: This story contains promotional content. Trump doesn't lay his hand on the Bible while swearing to uphold the constitution. Ben riffs. Charles Henderson reports on going door to door in Milwaukee—it's not pretty. Also, Trump pardons the insurrectionists. And Charles turns the tables on Ben. Asking about Fire on the Prairie, Gary Rivlin's classic book on Mayor Washington. Speaking of MAGA Mark Robinson's alleged penchant for porn, Ben goes back in time for a history lesson about stripper Fanne Foxx and Congressman Wilbur Mills. Charles Henderson offers his own thoughts. The discussion turns to Afghanistan, US wars, what Biden could have done better in leaving Afghanistan, the parade for Vietnam vets in Chicago and another reason why Harold Washington is Chicago's greatest mayor. And more. Charles is a vet and activist in Chicago. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
This week on episode 370, we interviewed Cristina Alaimo and Jannis Kalliniko, Co-authors of Data Rules: Reinventing the Market Economy, Charles Henderson, EVP of Cyber Security Services at Coalfire and Ron Miller, Enterprise Reporter at TechCrunch. Topics covered include:
Ben and Charles Henderson break it all down, starting with…a tribute to the great activist Barry Romo, who died a few days ago. Barry was a Vietnam War vet turned anti-war activist who wasn't afraid to take on the Daley Machine. Also, a few words about the working class janitors and college protestors. And free speech. And abortion. And Ben's beloved Bulls. Charles is an Iraqi War vet and political activist. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Are vets more politically conservative than non-vets? Or is that yet another MAGA myth that liberals have fallen for. Charles Henderson takes the deep dive in this and other topics. Charles is an Army vet who served in Afghanistan. See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
In this episode I had a chance to have a candid conversation with Charles Henderson. Charles is a global managing partner at IBM and also happens to be the head of the X-Force team. IBM recently released the X-Force Threat Intelligence Index report for 2024.While the report is delves into many different areas of Threat Intelligence, we concentrated on several key areas focused primarily on artificial intelligence:Pronounced increase in Identity attacksUnderstanding how more 'business-like' malicious actors are becomingUpcoming universal AI attack surfaceHow much do you think this will get wors? For example, I reached out to a couple of CISOs from some prominent local companies and one of their worries was and I quote, "Longer term I think we will have to worry about attackers trying to attack and leverage AI technologies that are being utilized by organizations."50% is the expected market share threshold likely to trigger attacks against AI platforms.Evolution of malware delivery mechanisms. AI's part in Business Email Compromise. Another area of concern when I polled my CISO contacts was AI's ability to, and I quote again, "Easier to perfect grammar and templates for phishing and other social engineering attempts.". How do you think companies like IBM can start helping people combat these types of attacks?)Thoughts on OpenAI's Sora and its potential impact on securityEpisode Charity:The Corewell Health's involvement in the Blue Envelope Suicide Prevention Program. The School Blue Envelope Suicide Prevention Program trains middle and high school faculty and staff so that every school employee—from teachers to coaches and bus drivers—would know how to respond to a student who may express thoughts of suicide. The “Blue Envelope” protocol for crisis management was developed internally to quickly activate patient safety responses by communicating the code words "Blue Envelope."Every person within a physician's office became proficient in how to respond at a moment's notice to a patient who may have thoughts of suicide. Through previous grant and foundation dollars, this program has been able to successfully train over 8,500 middle, high, and elementary school personnel across 156 schools within 53 different school districts. This training has resulted in over 2,000 interventions for students in crisis.Episode Sponsor:This episode is sponsored by IBM, who recently celebrated their 100th birthday! In this episode I catch up with Graham Coult and Charles Henderson who recently completed a bikepacking trip on the escape route taken by Graham's grandfather from a WWII POW camp - Stalag 18a. The idea for this route came to Graham when he discovered the original map his Grandfather used to escape from the prison camp in Austria. The thin blue line traced on the map formed the basis of the 2000km route, and Graham and Charles set out to see what this experience would entail. It should be pointed out that Charles is not a cyclist - he only got the bicycle he would use for the trip just a few days before setting off!It was the first time either of them had taken on a multi-day bikepacking adventure and as they discovered during the trip, this route would test them in ways they hadn't considered. Busy roads and cold, wet weather meant they had to grit through some grim conditions on this reflective journey. It became apparent that teamwork camaraderie were the elements which would get them to the finish in Thessaloniki. I really enjoyed chatting with both Graham and Charles who also used this trip as a fundraiser. You can learn more and donate to their charities here. The potential for cyber attacks will always rank as one of the top concerns for professionals. Over the decades, cyber attacks have gone from a headache for the IT department to something that can bring down an organization. While it's now a bit trite to say it's not a case of if a business is attacked but when, with groups like LAPSUS$, LockBit, and Cl0p regularly targeting companies of all sizes the odds are increasingly in the criminals' favor. In this episode Jane is joined by Charles Henderson, Global Head of IBM X-Force, to discuss the threats that the UK and other countries face, and how they can be tackled.

Since I hail from Troy, Alabama, allow me to share with you the story of our only governor. Charles Henderson was not only the 35th governor of Alabama, but he may also be one of the most profound philanthropists in Alabama history. He is unquestionably the greatest philanthropist to grace Pike County. Soon after Alabama's 1901 Constitution was enacted, a pattern of electing wellheeled governors began. From 1910-1946 Alabama elected what we referred to as Bourbon governors. They were usually successful businessmen who looked at the job as a civic role for four years. Jack Revell from Drugswrap talks the week in drug news with us.Follow Drugswrap on TwitterDrug Reporter and INPUD present:Taking Back What's Ours! An oral history of the movement of people who use drugsIn this episode of the oral history of the movement of people who use drugs, we learn about the successes and challanges in Australia, from four veterans of the user movement. The history of the movement of people who use drugs in Australia is a long and rich one. It is one of the few countries that has funded user organisations for over 30 years now.In this episode of our series, four veterans of the user movement in Australia tell us the oral history of the movement. Jude Byrne from the Australian Injecting and Illicit Drug Users League (AIVL), Annie Madden and Charles Henderson from the New South Wales Users and AIDS Association (NUAA) and Geoffrey Ward from the Canberra Alliance for Harm Minimisation and Advocacy (CAHMA).In the 80s when HIV appeared among people who inject drugs, the Australian government wisely responded by involving injecting drug users into designing and implementing the response. This approach resulted in minimising HIV infections among users in the Country. The Activists successfully advocated for the opening of medically supervised injecting rooms, first in Sydney and recently in Melbourne. Naloxone distribution is run by the user groups as well.Despite their successes, their work is far from being done. They tirelessly fight to end prohibition and the harms arising from it: the drug testing at dance festivals, which results in the death of young people, because out of fear of being caught, they swallow their week's dose of drug; the drug testing of drivers for cannabis, when your license is taken away if you test positive, even though you used days before; or the removal of children from their drug using mothers, regardless of how she treats her child. In this episode we also learn about how New Zealand successfully responded to the HIV epidemic by being one of the first countries to have a national needle and syringe exchange program.

Dr. Sammy Allen, 82, of Resaca, GA died Sunday, August 2, 2020, at Advent Health Gordon. Rev. Allen was born, October 4, 1937, as Robert Verland Allen, son of the late Vince W. and Myrtle McKinley Timms Allen. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson; Vince Allen, and by two sisters; Nettie Allen Baker and Johnnie Ruth Allen Dean. After several months of deep Holy Ghost conviction, he was saved by the grace of God in the summer of 1955. Immediately upon his conversion, he began to witness to others about their need of salvation. This burden became so heavy that he began to speak as a lay preacher in Sunday School classes, cottage prayer meetings, and even in church services every time he was given an opportunity. Bro. Allen announced his calling to preach in 1961. He soon was called to be the pastor of Maple Grove Baptist Church and New Prospect Baptist Church. These were half time churches. In October 1961, Bro. Allen was used of the Lord to organize the Concord Baptist Mission into Concord Baptist Church, and was the only pastor for 59 years. Immediately after he announced his calling into the ministry, God began to open doors for the young fiery preacher to preach revival meetings. This evangelistic ministry grew so fast that by 1964 the young preacher had to leave his job in the carpet mill and go full-time in evangelism. He continued to preach meetings week after week across the country in both small and large churches. In the late 1960s, God began to lay a burden on Bro. Allen’s heart for a Camp Meeting in the area where he lived. After much prayer and waiting upon the Lord, Faith Baptist Camp was born with the first Camp Meeting held under a large tent on the grounds in June 1970. Faith Baptist Camp has been very blessed of the Lord and has been used to be a blessing to so many people and churches across America. As an older man, Dr. Allen is held in high respect by all the Fundamental Baptists all across the country that knows him. He is known as an Evangelist, a Revivalist, a Camp Meeting Preacher, a Pastor, and a Preacher’s Friend by those who know him and love Old Fashion Christianity. He now holds two Honorary Doctorate Degrees. Every student of Faith Baptist Institute will be affected by the leadership of this dynamic man of God. Dr. Allen was married on December 28, 1962, to Jimmie Lou Wilson. She has stood by his side as a faithful, loving, God-fearing wife in every task he has attempted. God has blessed their home with two sons; Samuel (Sabrina) Allen of Resaca, and David (Gwen) Allen of Calhoun; daughter; Hannah Allen of Resaca, grandchildren; Samuel and Alexis Allen of Flowery Branch, Elisabeth Allen of Dalton, Nathanael Allen of Calhoun, Hagen Allen of Resaca and Brianna Allen of Resaca, Great-grandchildren; Caroline Allen of Dalton and Gibson Allen of Flowery Branch, GA. A host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives also survive. The funeral service for Dr. Sammy Allen will be conducted on Friday, August 7, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. from Concord Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Bro. Randy Sutherland will officiate along with Bro. Tony Hudson, Bro. Marion Atkinson, Bro. Denver Boling, Bro. Ronnie Simpson, Bro. Marvin Carr, and Bro. Joe Arthur. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Alan Sosebee, Ken Johnson, Steve Johnson, Nick Johnson, Joey Baker, Scotty Bryant, Ricky Bryant, Brandon Reeves, Doug Wilson, and Mike Andrews; honorary pallbearers are Jim Fox, Bobby Thomas, Mike Bell, Mike Lane, Rev. Charles Henderson, Tyrone Wilson, Donnie Rigdon, Rev. Steve Powers, Rev. David Cash, Stan Ritter, Ronnie Russ, William Nix, Rev. Billy Wilson, Rev. Travis Clayton, Robert Croft, Jamie Trammell, Adam Evans, Brandon Ensley, and Silas Foster. The family will receive friends at Concord Baptist Church on Thursday, August 6, 2020, between the hours of 4:00 PM and 10:00 PM https://www.tributearchive.com/obituaries/17725223/Dr-Sammy-Allen Dr. Allen preached this message, on Thursday morning, June 12, 2003, at the Pleasant View Baptist Church of Taylors, SC's Camp Meeting.

Part 1 of 2. What real man doesn't like a good sniper story? The best one I've ever heard has to be from the book, "Marine Sniper" by Charles Henderson. It shows the mud crawling, ghillied up, shoot 'em up exploits of the Marine Corps sniper legend, Carlos Hathcock. He laid the ground for all modern snipers today. If you're thinking of buying the book, be sure to have it edited for foul language because there's plenty. However, there will definitely be none of that on my podcast.
