In this episode, Kevin Stoller interviews Tom Murray, the Director of Innovation for Future Ready Schools. They discuss Tom's journey in education, the challenges and rewards of educational leadership, and the importance of building trust and communication with the community. They also explore the power of relationships in education and the need to share the positive stories happening in schools. Overall, the conversation highlights the need for strong leadership and collaboration to create better learning experiences for students.   Takeaways Educators should share their stories and be proud of the work they do. Building trust and communication with the community is essential for the success of schools. Public perception of education should be based on the positive stories and impact happening in schools. Strong relationships are the foundation of effective education.   After serving at the elementary and secondary levels as both a teacher and a principal, and then at the district level, Tom now serves as the Director of Innovation for Future Ready SchoolsR, a project of All4Ed, located in Washington, D.C. When I first got involved in “information security” 20+ years ago, I found myself almost entirely surrounded by industry peers whose training and experience was in technology or technology disciplines. My training in law, marketing and finance, and my experience in business development, marketing, recruitment and even a stint in purchasing and supplies all seemed out of line with the world of IT security as it was called back then. As I came to understand, during my own research in human behaviour and culture, my lack of an education in technology meant I was culturally and even physically wired differently. This meant I looked at things through a different set of lenses. The result, was an approach that we would now call governance, risk and compliance. However, it was these very human disciplines, which led me to fundamentally think differently when it came to kicking off the Re-thinking the Human Factor research programme. Our guest Lana McGill, to me, enshrines the change in direction of an increasing number of forward thinking security professionals looking for a more mature approach to employee awareness, behaviour and culture. Lana believes that by diversifying their search for skills and experience, outside of the traditional industry expectations, you can bring new insights and energy to the challenge of influencing  employee behaviour and culture. Her role as a senior information security leader, in the finance sector, and her willingness to embrace other skills and experiences in the search for more effective interventions, gives hope that the industry inertia, when it comes to the human factor, may finally be shifting.   ©Copyright Marmalade Box Limited The content of this podcast is the property of Marmalade Box Limited. Mary Lowe is the cofounder of Families Engaged. The first half of the podcast, Mary and I gave a recap of our tour across Texas to Midland, Huffman, Houston, Cypress, Woodlands and other areas. Our mission is to train families on how to get engaged in the education of their children. There are myriad tools we can use to fight lawlessness with the law. When dealing with school board trustees, state board members and legislators, Mary said, “They don't know what we don't tell them.” So we are telling them what is really happening in our school districts. We train parents on how to file grievances, public information requests and how to recognize when they are being “delphied.”We present solutions on how to build a bridge back to a classical model of education. Some advocate for an escape hatch through school choice vouchers using deceptive semantics of “parent empowerment.” We believe the parental rights issue has been conflated with allowing education dollars to follow the child. Our rights as parents come from God. Mary and I understand the trojan horse of school choice legislation and discussed the nuances around language being used to promote school choice bills in the upcoming 88th legislature. Regardless of your stance on school choice, we are paying for public education through our property taxes. School board trustees, state board members, the TEA and legislators have a fiduciary responsibility to the taxpayers to ensure our money is going to students and teachers, not special interests, consultants and technology vendors.Mary Lowe can be reached at marydlowe@yahoo.comFamilies Engaged for Effective Education is on FacebookWebsite: Familiesengaged.orgTexas Lawyers CreedBrought to you by:https://MoveFreelyAmerica.orghttps://OBBMNetworkPodcasts.comhttps://OBBMNetworkBrands.comJunkluggers of Grapevine, Irving, and Denton 630-470-8307Terrel Tipton, Insperity HR Services, 972-409-4316Support the show

Marcy Galle is a Parent Advocate and Co-Founder of Families Engaged For Effective Education. She is a former city councilmember of Willow Park just north of Aledo, Texas. Marcy is an expert in public information requests, the Texas Open Meetings Act (TOMA) and the public education grievance process. When local ISDs lawyer up, she steps in to help families exercise their parental rights as outlined in the Texas Education Code. There is a pattern of ungodly behavior in Godley ISD where she has dealt with the administration, the school board, and superintendent shirking their responsibilities and circumventing the law by propping up their lawyers against parents. She is also advocating for parents in Joshua ISD, Fort Worth ISD and others. Parents are being denied their constitutional right to speak at school board meetings. Districts across Texas are deploying antagonistic and disrespectful tactics to dissuade parents from testifying at board meetings. They often go into closed session for 1-2 hours at the beginning of meetings making working parents wait until the closed sessions adjourn before hearing public testimonies. DeSoto ISD is another repeat offender of TOMA. Regarding the captive market of public school students fed into the predatory social-emotional learning cash cow for vendors, parents are benign denied their right to opt in or opt out of these experimental learning technologies and strategies. Marcy helps families understand the laws written to protect children and parents so they can be empowered with the law in order to fight lawlessness. Marcy can be contacted at marcy.m.galle@gmail.com Families Engaged for Effective Education is on Facebook Website: Familiesengaged.orgTexas Lawyers CreedBrought to you by:https://MoveFreelyAmerica.orghttps://OBBMNetworkPodcasts.comhttps://OBBMNetworkBrands.comJunkluggers of Grapevine, Irving, and Denton 630-470-8307Terrel Tipton, Insperity HR Services, 972-409-4316Support the show

The decades-long school funding lawsuit - referred to as Leandro - goes to the North Carolina Supreme Court tomorrow for oral arguments. Dr. Terry Stoops, Director of the Center for Effective Education at the John Locke Foundation, says the lawsuit has been hijacked by leftist organizations by urging the courts to "circumvent lawmakers and order state government agencies to extract billions of taxpayer dollars from state coffers": The state Supreme Court hearing is the culmination of years of advocacy efforts by more than three dozen special interest groups, progressive organizations, and union-supported enterprises that are members of North Carolina Communities for the Education of Every Child or Every Child NC. As part of its “state-level systemic change strategy,” the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation awarded a $60,000 grant to the left-wing North Carolina Justice Center in 2020 to establish the Every Child NC coalition. At issue will be whether a court can dictate budget allocations to fund schools in the state, or whether that power rests solely with the legislature. Democrats hold a 4-3 majority on the state Supreme Court, and has already shown a willingness to conjure super-legislative powers to enact policy that the lawmaking branch did not.      Get exclusive content here!: https://thepetekalinershow.com/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Since we live in an era of chronic stress, that can have a significant impact on how we learn, how we grow, and how we interact with others. As important as these findings are, these things are rarely accounted for in our classrooms, leaving many students without crucial help they need to learn and develop effectively. On this week's episode, we dip our toes in the deep waters of neurology and trauma research with Dr. David Stevens, a professor at Tabor College who is leading a new master's program training educators how to better care for and nurture today's students. Even for those of us outside of education, these principles and this research can be very helpful in our leadership. In today’s episode, we look at the value of studying history as a subject in and of itself. Today, many people criticize history as an academic enterprise on several fronts: one, whether or not history is useful to study at all and two, if we study history, we tend to focus on certain monumental figures to the neglect of other important, meaningful voices within the historical narrative. To that end, what people, places, and voices in history should we focus on in studying history? What are the principles upon which we should study history? What is the goal of studying history, and how might the study of history contribute to positive character development and human flourishing? In this episode, we examine these questions and solicit answers from a wide array of opinions from teachers and educators on the content, purpose, and value of studying history, including Wilfred McClay, an intellectual historian at Hillsdale College, Leah Klein, the Chair of the History Department at Thales Apex, Clifford Humphrey, Director of Admissions at Thales College, Terry Stoops, Director for the Center for Effective Education at the John Locke Foundation, and Bob Luddy, the founder of Thales Academy. Major N.C. universities have problems with pervasive sex discrimination. But it’s not the type of discrimination you might expect when you hear those words. Adam Kissel, former deputy assistant secretary for higher education programs at U.S. Department of Education, documented the problem in a recent report. Kissel shares highlights of the report prepared for the James G. Martin Center for Academic Renewal. The COVID-19 pandemic has created challenges since last spring for parents of school-age children in North Carolina. Some of them turned to “learning pods” to help address students’ struggles with online learning. Terry Stoops, director of the Center for Effective Education at the John Locke Foundation, assesses families’ experience with learning pods and other innovations sparked by COVID-19.

Visit http://JohnBlakeAudio.com to Learn How to DOUBLE Your Enquiry-to-Sale Conversion with The Lead Flow You Already Have. Education-based marketing is the most effective way to create separation between you and your competitors in a world where everybody is promising inverted commerce, good service, and a great product that becomes null and void. I became aware of education-based marketing through the late great Chet Holmes. He wrote a book called The Ultimate Sales Machine. In fact, I quoted him in my book, “High Stakes Selling,” as saying: “The one who gives the market the most and best information will always slaughter the one who just wants to sell products or services.” I would qualify that by saying, if you just give the market lots of information about your product, then you're not even going to put a scratch on your competition. It is educating the market so that they can become better-informed consumers. A beautiful example of this is a guy who I just met at the weekend. He has a business where he goes into retirement villages and he refurbishes the units. There's a relatively higher turnover for units in retirement villages because when people pass away, their family doesn't need that particular unit anymore. They want to resell it to someone else. This guy is doing these refurbishments, and he has a lot of competition. And what he said is that the competition going there and I under Kadeem on price and they have dodgy workmanship. His question to me was, “How do I get in front of these facility managers?” He said that the three things that they need to keep in mind and that they need to do is to 1) make sure their refurbishment projects are completed on time, 2) they're within budget, and 3) they're completed without any defects - so that they don't have tradespeople traipsing in and out of the place for six months after the unit has been supposedly refurbished. I said to him, “How do you think you'll go with that?” He said that'll work for sure. It's about looking at the world through the lens of the person that you are targeting and putting together a piece of education that has nothing to do with your product, but positions you as an expert in the process. This is a powerful exercise to do. My thinking for you is, what could you do to educate that particular target on how to avoid those things happening? And if you can work out how to do that, then you're going to get a much bigger percentage of the attention for that market for any product that we talked about. You're definitely going to get the attention of the 3% that are buying now. You'll get the attention of the 7% that are in the market, but you also get a bigger percentage of that 30% that are open to it, and even the 30% that are not thinking about it. When you step into your classroom each day, do you believe that all your students can succeed? Does this belief shape how you teach and engage your students in learning? On this episode of Critical Window (listen below) a podcast by the Alliance for Excellent Education (All4Ed), we spoke with Dr. Yvette Jackson, adjunct professor at Teacher’s College at Columbia University and senior scholar at the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education, about her concept of the “pedagogy of confidence.” Dr. Jackson, who has a book titled after this concept, is internationally recognized for her work applying neuroscience, gifted education, literacy, and cognitive mediation theory to elicit high intellectual performances from under-achieving and historically underserved students. A core concept of Dr. Jackson’s work is based on the idea that teachers should teach from a place of confidence in every students’ ability to learn, regardless of background or zip code. “When you have confidence about the potential of students, you help to push them to the outskirts, the limits of their mind,” explains Dr. Jackson on Critical Window. In this strategy, “learning becomes something that pulls [a student’s] potential to the next level.” What are the core ideas behind the “pedagogy of confidence,” and how can educators use this style of pedagogy to support adolescent learning? Here are six key strategies from Dr. Jackson: 1.Identify and activate student strengths. Instruction should help students believe “I can do this.” Teaching to students’ strengths helps them become more confident in their abilities and empowers them to perform better, all while establishing a growth mindset. 2. Focus on high intellectual performance. High intellectual performance should be the target for all students, not only those who have been identified for gifted and talented programs. Teach with the knowledge that all students are highly capable. 3. Build on existing skills and knowledge. Look at what students need to progress in their learning. What type of background knowledge do they need to have as a baseline and what additional skills do they need to build to succeed at the next level? 4. Situate learning in students’ lives. Are students seeing a connection between what you’re teaching and what’s happening in the world? Focus on issues and events happening in the world around them and incorporate those trends into the learning experience. 5. Acknowledge the impact of culture. Culture impacts the learning process and is a fundamental building block for students; however, it also can hold children back, even in school. If the school culture doesn’t represent the culture of the students, then you’re going to get all kinds of dysfunction. 6. Assess growth in every learning experience. Make every learning experience an opportunity for assessing growth. Receiving feedback on their performance and areas of growth helps students feel confident that they can progress in their learning. The guests for the February show will be Drs. Yvette Jackson and Veronica McDermott, co-authors of Aim High, Achieve More How to Transform Urban Schools Through Fearless Leadership (ASCD Press).  We will discuss how expectations impact student performance and success particularly in urban communities.  We will also discuss how leaders cultivate cultures of high expectation in their schools.   Dr. Jackson currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education, founded at the College Board and Teachers College, Columbia University. She works with school district superintendents, administrators, teachers, and students across the United States and internationally to customize and deliver systemic approaches that enable students to demonstrate high intellectual performances. She bases her work on the principles and practices of the Pedagogy of Confidence, which she created to enable educators to accelerate the intellectual development and academic achievement of their students.  On September 15, 2012 the Academy of Education Arts and Sciences Educators Voice Awards honored Yvette for “Education Policy/Researcher of the Year.” Yvette has been a visiting lecturer at Harvard University's Graduate School of Education, Columbia University, and Stanford University.  The public schools of Long Island, NY, served as the launching pad of Dr. McDermott's career, a career that spans more than 30 years and extended over many roles: superintendent of schools, assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, principal, district director, dean, and classroom teacher.  Join us for what will be a dynamic show for policy makers, teachers, superintendents and principals.
