WallBuilders is a nonprofit organization founded by David Barton to promote America's Christian foundation and the Founding Fathers' faith. This latest study shows that people of faith make up about 79 percent of America's population. That would mean all religious faiths, to include Christianity, Judaism, Mormonism, and Islam. A little understanding goes a long way. Christians may be surprised at the meaning that some of their everyday Christian words and symbols can carry for the average Jewish person. In this episode of A Jew & A Gentile Discuss, Ezra grills Carly with some common misconceptions Jewish people have about Christians. Throughout the conversation, they reveal some ways Christians may be unknowingly shutting down or offending a Jewish person. When we – on both sides – seek understanding, we can have meaningful conversations with each other. It’s Carly’s turn to be on the hot seat while Ezra asks her to address many misconceptions, such as: Christians can bless Israel and still believe that Jewish people don’t need the Gospel/Jesus because they have their own way. If a Christian befriends a Jewish person, it’s only to convert them. The image of the cross and what it represents are inherently threatening to a Jewish person Christians worship three gods, whereas Jewish people worship only one The Church is inherently anti-Semitic Christians have their own Bible Christian Zionism sees Jews as pawns on an End-Time chessboard He also asks Carly to answer a few questions Jewish people have of Christians: Why do Christians want to use Jewish symbols – such as the Star of David, prayer shawls, chanukiahs, and the Israeli flag? What’s the biggest misperception people have of you as a Christian? They discuss what it means to bless someone and give insight into how Jewish people typically interpret words like “convert,” “cross,” and “become a Christian.” They also bring up tips for engaging in meaningful conversations with Jewish friends and family with sensitivity and a Bible-reading challenge to listeners. Words you might learn – or gain new insight about – in this episode: Bless, convert, the cross, Shema, trinity, echad, nations, ethnos, proton, Tanakh, Nevi’im, Ketuvim, New Testament/New Covenant, Christian Zionism, chanukiah Tune in for new episodes wherever you listen to podcasts or go to www.ajewandagentilediscuss.org for more information. "Imagine a world where when people wanted to be heard and seen for who they were; be understood; they’d go to a Christian because Christians had reputations for listening and seeking commonality and understanding. Why not, Christians? Why can we not take a page out of Paul’s book here and seek to understand and care for others? To meet them where they are, not by way of condescending or pretending that everything’s the same. Not by way of minimizing differences, either. Or living in some sort of relativistic world where nothing is good or bad. None of that stuff, Paul doesn’t do that. But by in the midst of our difference, seeking to talk about that difference from a place of what we do share. And what we care about and desire. What we yearn for and need. What if we were Christians like that?"

In this blast from the past, J. Warner describes the nature of “Responsive Christianity”. Why do some of us call ourselves “Evangelical Christians”? Is evangelism an important part of what it means to be a Christian? Are all of us called to be evangelists? What if we aren’t gifted in that way? What role should “apologetics” play in the life of the Christian? Must we all be “apologists” if we want to call ourselves “Christians”? Why should we adopt a new definition and become “Responsive Christians”?

Harriet Tubman was born a slave. Tubman was beaten and whipped by her various masters as a child. Early in life, she suffered a traumatic head wound when an irate slave owner threw a heavy metal weight intending to hit another slave, but hitting her instead. This severe mistreatment led to her escaping to Philadelphia in 1859 She immediately returned to Maryland to rescue her family. Slowly, one group at a time, she brought relatives with her out of the state, and eventually guided many other slaves to freedom. Traveling by night and in extreme secrecy, Tubman (called "Moses” by many) "never lost a passenger". “I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” The sad reality is, it’s easy to become so accustomed to bondage that you no longer recognize you’re a slave. As Morpheus told New on The Matrix, “Like everyone else you were born into bondage. Into a prison that you cannot taste or see or touch. A prison for your mind.” With God’s help I want to awaken you to two realities this morning: • Many of us don’t realize it, but we are slaves• Jesus is a Deliver that sets captives freeTurn to Acts 16:11• Paul’s second missionary journey• Accompanied by Silas, Timothy, Dr. Luke, and others• Led by the Spirit to go to Philippi (modern-day Greece/Macedonia) • Along the way we’ll see three different encounters with three different slaves. • Jesus is a Deliver that sets captives free.Three Main Points:• Jesus delivers slaves to religion• Jesus delivers slaves to sin• Jesus delivers slaves to circumstancesAsk yourself...• In what ways am I a slave? And how do I need to turn to Jesus for deliverance?• In what ways are those I love caught in slavery? And how do I need to point them to Jesus the Deliverer? 1) Jesus Delivers Slaves to Religion• Verses 11—14ao What does it mean that Lydia is a "worshiper of God"?• Religion!! How is religion slavery? Because you think you are free, while you remain a sinner• John 8:31-38 -- 31 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” 33 They answered Him, “We are Abraham’s descendants and have never yet been enslaved to anyone; how is it that You say, ‘You will become free’?” 34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin.• Religion + Riches is a deadly cocktail because we fool ourselves into thinking that we're fine!o Trusting in our church attendance, giving, voting records, religious posts on social media, morality, comparison to other peopleo You are not as good as you think you are!!!When you combine that with any measure of financial prosperity (which is everyone in this country) and we are just like Lydia! Your financial condition may not be a sign of God's blessing. Read Romans 1:29-2:5• MAY BE THE MOST DANGEROUS TYPE OF SLAVERY (because we don't know we're slaves) • Human response to being confronted with our slavery to religion is anger!o This is why the Pharisees hated Jesus -- end of John 8 they're picking up stones to kill Him!!!• Notice how Lydia responded...• Read verses 14b—15• God opens the heart...o Slave to religion: God must open your heart!!!!o Christian: Why we must pray!!! Parents, pray for your children Wives, pray for your unbelieving husbandso "Chase God on your knees before you chase men on your feet".• Before = don't use this as an excuse to stop sharing!God uses Paul’s words...o Spurgeon -- "Our Saviour has bidden us to preach the gospel to every creature; he has not said, Preach it only to the elect; and though that might seem to be the most logical thing for us to do, yet, since he has not been pleased to stamp the elect in their foreheads, or to put any distinctive mark upon them, it would be an impossible task for us to perform; whereas, when we preach the gospel to every creature, the gospel makes its own division, and Christ’s sheep hear his voice, and follow him." • Have you been set free to slavery to religion?o Identify with Jesus and His people (baptism, local church membership)o Devote your gifts and resources for the church (hospitality)• Are you a slave to religion? Jesus can set you free. 2) Jesus Delivers Slaves to Sin• Read Verses 16—18• Notice the Contrast:o Lydia is named, this girl isn’to Lydia is wealthy, this girl is pooro Lydia is religious, this girl is demonico Lydia learns of Jesus during a quiet Bible study, this girl learns of Jesus through a dramatic clash between supernatural powers• Jesus delivers all types of people!!!• Phrase "spirit of divination" literally reads "spirit python" in the original languageo According to Greek mythology the python was a snake that guarded the Oracle at Delphio The god of prophecy, Apollo killed the snake and took over the oracle at Delphio Eventually the term "python" came to refer to anyone who had Apollo's gift of fortune-telling • We don't know how this girl came to be in this situation, but we know this...o SIN WILL TAKE YOU FARTHER THAN YOU WANT TO GO, KEEP YOU LONGER THAN YOU WANT TO STAY, AND COST YOU MORE THAN YOU WANT TO PAY.• Notice what she’s saying: “These men are servants of the Most High God, who proclaim to you the way of salvation.”o Lesson: you can say all the right things and still be a slave to sin!• Why is she speaking the truth? Perhaps to plant a false convert in the churcho Satan has two primary weapons against the church: infiltration--attack from within persecution--attack from withouto Lesson: be on guard!!!!• Main lesson: the Gospel brings freedom to the slave!!!• Can’t relate to the religious Lydia? Are you like the slave girl?• • How we become enslaved...o Sexual sin (fornication, pornography, etc.)o Substances (Drugs/Alcohol/Food)o Bitternesso Worryo Pride Greatest evidence that you're a slave to pride is if you've been thinking about all the other people in the room who are slaves instead of looking in the mirroro Romans 6:16--Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?o SIN WILL TAKE YOU FARTHER THAN YOU WANT TO GO, KEEP YOU LONGER THAN YOU WANT TO STAY, AND COST YOU MORE THAN YOU WANT TO PAY.• MAY BE THE MOST OBVIOUS TYPE OF SLAVERYo Even if we keep our slavery a secret, we know in our hearts that we're slaves!o All our efforts to free ourselves are like a vehicle stuck in the mud. The harder we try to get ourselves out, the more stuck we become.o LOOK TO JESUS!!!• This doesn’t always mean instant deliverance like this slave girl. Sometimes it’s a long, hard road to learn to live in light of our freedom.o If you're stuck, get help today. Talk to someone!o Sin is like a cockroach, it hates the light! Warning: not everyone responds positively when Jesus delivers slaves to sin...• Read Verses 19-24o Lesson: If you’re living for what you can get in this life, you may quickly find yourself opposing Jesus!!• Are you a slave to sin? Jesus can set you free. 3) Jesus Delivers Slaves to Circumstances• Read Verses 25-27o Crisis strikes this jailer’s lifeo Explain: Roman law stated that soldiers who lost their prisoners were subject to the same penalty that was due their prisonerso He’s ready to give up! His life is ruled by his circumstanceso MAY BE THE MOST COMMON TYPE OF SLAVERY• Slaves to circumstances...o Are happy when things are goodo Complain/get angry/give up/are depressed/bitter when things are badWhat the slave to circumstances needs...• Read Verses 28-34• Repent and believe!!!• What about Christians? Why do we still struggle with this?!?• Philippians 4:11-13 -- I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me.• Easy to say, harder to do!!!When you're walking with Jesus, even when it looks like you're in bondage you're free!!! Read v. 25o But these guys aren't pushovers!!!• Read verses 35-40o Tough and tenderAre you a slave to your circumstances? Jesus can set you free. Warning: Conversion does not make us forever immune to slavery! • Galatians 5:1 -- For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.• We can return to bondage to religion, sin, and circumstances• SONS VS SLAVES SHEET• Repent and be restored!Story is told of a wealthy man who went to a slave market where he noticed a young woman being auctioned off to the highest offer. He bid on her and won. He could see the anger in the young woman’s eyes and could imagine what she was thinking, "another master will buy me, use me, and then discard me." As the wealthy man walked off with the woman, he turned to her and said, ‘You’re free’. ‘Yeah. What does that mean?’ she replied. ‘It means that you’re free.’ ‘Does it mean I can say whatever I want to say?’ ‘Yes,’ replied the wealthy man, smiling, ‘it means you can say whatever you want to say.’ ‘Does it mean,’ she asked incredulously, ‘that I can be whatever I want to be?’ ‘Yes, you can be whatever you want to be.’ ‘Does it mean,’ the young woman said hesitantly, ‘that I can go wherever I want to go?’ ‘Yes, it means you are free and you can go wherever you want to go.’ ‘Then,’ said the woman with tears welling up in her eyes, ‘I think I’ll go with you.’ When you've truly been delivered by Jesus you want to follow Him!

[A quick note about this episode - we have fixed an error that caused some listeners to hear overlapping audio in the first portion of the show. Thank you for your understanding, and we're sorry for the issue] In 2017, Rod Dreher published The Benedict Option, a book arguing that America has grown so hostile to Orthodox Christian practice and morals that believers need to retreat into sealed communities to wait out the cultural storm. It’s a window into a mindset that is increasingly powerful in politics but befuddling to those who don’t share its premise: How have so many white Christians come to feel like America’s most persecuted class? Dreher writes about the monastics, but he lives the engaged life. He’s a senior editor at the American Conservative, where he writes a popular blog confronting American politics and culture from an Orthodox Christian perspective. I asked him on the show to try to see the world through his eyes and better understand some of the debates splitting the country. How can a country so suffused in Christian culture seem so hostile to Christians? Why does the Christian right focus so much on sexuality rather than poverty, lust rather than greed? How can a religion built around such radical openness to strangers embrace Trump’s approach to borders and migrants? What is the line between protecting religious liberty and accepting widespread discrimination? And do blogs like Dreher’s, which trawl the culture for the stories meant to make Christians feel persecuted and appalled, just drive a deeper wedge into our politics? Dreher is thoughtful, eloquent, and open, and this is a conversation that left us both questioning some premises. A lot of the points we differ on can’t be settled by debate, but that doesn’t mean there’s no room for understanding. First order of business: cultural apologetics. May I have permission to make a non-political point by using someone else’s political statement? [In this post on Twitter, Obianuju Ekeocha demonstrates clearly that many political heavyweights are spinning the tragedy in Sri Lanka](http://). I want you to look at this and ask yourself one question: why do they not want to say this terrorism was targeting Christians? Why does one famous, famous lady feed you a line of crap that Easter is a special day for many religions? Sometimes I think that’s all we have to do as Christian casemakers – ask a question of someone. The ones who will “get it” will get it, and others will be willfully blind no matter what your argument. And it will become clear that their agenda is not even neutral…that it is anti-Christian. And we should not be surprised. Aware, but not surprised. Bible segment: Reading along with The Bible Project Today’s personal prayer reading: Psalm 115 Translation: CSB (Christian Standard Bible) Our reading: Isaiah 28-30:26 Apologetics segment: Gary Habermas and Jesus’ uniqueness I’m wondering if it’d be interesting to call this a “news you can use” or “words you can use” section. • In modernity, a common objection is “science is real” and “religion is opinion.” • While we should test everything, including miracles, there are six places to test to see if Jesus’ claims were unmatched by founders of other major religions (it’s a beautiful thing about Christianity – it’s testable). • #1: Jesus claimed to be deity. o Buddha didn’t, and whatever spiritism or divinity is part of some Buddhist practices in China didn’t really develop until 700 years later. o Like Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism began more reservedly, and they later evolved into “more phenomenal, mystical, and occultic versions.” (p16) Some historians speculate that this happened, in part, due to competition for followers – they got more sensationalistic to attract attention. o Conclusion – in terms of self-claim to deity, these “naturalistic ethical, social, and political thinkers” (p16) are not rivals to Jesus. Today: what about other “prophets?” Let’s look at Zoroaster, chief prophet of the Persian religion. Gary Habermas, “The Uniqueness of Jesus Christ Among the Major World Religions” (Lynchburg, VA: GaryHabermas.com, 2016). http://www.garyhabermas.com/Evidence2/Habermas-Uniqueness-of-Jesus-Christ-2016.pdf. We know “Bible stories” but do we know “why?” Do we really know why we are Christians? Why do we come to church on Sunday? We give “religious” answers, but what if you were asked to answer from your heart? Pastor Sherry pushes the listener to “think” as she, led by the Holy Spirit, endeavors to help the body of Christ answer “Why?" This teaching will not GIVE you the answer you seek, but through it you will discover that the answer is a marriage between your Bible and you. Experience “Christ IN YOU the hope of glory!” (Colossians 1:27)
Episode 15 returns to Europe and formative events in 17th Century England, where a mostly forgotten group of radicals demanded a written constitution guaranteeing free speech, liberty of conscience, and democracy. But who were the Levellers? What was the historical context of their radical demands and why were they ultimately crushed by former allies? Listen and find the answers to such questions as: Who was the first English author to demand full religious toleration for both heretics and non-Christians? Why did Charles I and Archbishop Laud cut off the ears of dissenting Puritans? What happens when you try to impose alien religious ceremonies on proud and devout Scots? Why was censorship abolished in 1641 and what were the consequences? What happened at the Putney Debates? How radical were the Levellers’ demands for free speech and liberty of conscience? Did John Milton really become a censor himself? Why did traditionalists refer to pamphlets and books as “paper-bullets?” You can subscribe and listen to Clear and Present Danger on Apple Podcasts, Google Play, YouTube, TuneIn, and Stitcher, or download episodes directly from SoundCloud. Is it ok to question God? We know that we all do it. Can my childhood faith stand up to adult problems? Can I like Jesus but not Christians? Why do bad things happen to good people? Can reason and science disprove Christianity? Why should I trust the Bible? The next 6 weeks we will unpack these questions and more.
This Week’s Core Practice: Love- I sacrificially and unconditionally love and forgive others.1 John 4:10-12 “ In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins. Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.Scripture: Matthew 10:16-23“Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of men, for they will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings for my sake, to bear witness before them and the Gentiles. When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will deliver brother over to death, and the father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death, and you will be hated by all for my name’s sake. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next, for truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.Introductory Thoughts: Jesus calls us to be wise and be aware. The Christian life is an impossible task; it is a Way that cannot be fathomed. We cannot successfully accomplish it on our own. We face obstacles and pitfalls that derail us from the goal, and we become frustrated, lose our hope, and even our faith. The great news is we are not on this journey alone. Christ travels with us and equips us, and even tells us what is ahead so we can be forewarned and prepared. With His guidance, and with the power of the Holy Spirit, the Christian life becomes a doable deal, a life worth living, and a life worth sharing and accompanying others. It is a life that has no equal! Jesus comes to us, not only to equip us, but also to do what is most essential, that of growing and fulfilling us. This is an incredible and wondrous privilege. However, it can also be tough. He promises Himself to us on the journey. The path will have unexpected detours and sometimes we won’t be able to see beyond the bend in the road, but He will guide us and show us the next step. The ways and woes of this sinful, fallen world, seemingly gripped in Satan's control, will get to us on occasions. It may even cause us to suffer and bring us to our eternal home earlier than we planned. But, when our eyes are upon Christ as our Lord, we can have confidence that He is sovereign and will bring us through. We will even grow stronger, and better through adversity. Why? There is a price to pay in life, one for which He made the full payment for--our place in eternity, our salvation.Personal Reflection: Use the following questions to help review the application of God’s Word to our Head (What does God want me to know?), to our Heart (What does God want me to desire/value?), and to our Hands (What does God want me to do?)· Looking back at Andy’s message, is there anything that especially resonated or challenged you?· Can you think of specific examples where the world is getting worse towards the treatment of Christians?· Why does Jesus call us to be wise and be aware? Why can’t we just simply trust Him?· Have you ever felt that the Christian life is an impossible task? Why, or why not? What makes it possible?· What are some obstacles and pitfalls you may face that could potentially derail you from the goal Christ has for you to grow growth in faith and maturity?· The world will hate us for no apparent reason other than it hates Jesus. Have you ever experienced that?· Why do you suppose most people prefer sin, and what feels good, to His love?· What does it mean to be prudent in our action and discernment to prevent needless suffering and strife in our lives?· What do you need to do to let the Spirit speak through you?· If you were one of Matthew's first-century readers, and faced with severe persecution, how would you respond to this passage?· What can you do to “be wise as serpents and harmless as doves”?(See Romans 16:19, 2 Corinthians 12:16, Ephesians 5:15, and Colossians 4:5.)Why were the apostles not to worry about how or what they should speak if they were brought before kings and governors (v.18)? (See also Exodus 4:12, 2 Samuel 23:2, Jeremiah 1:7, and 2 Timothy 4:17.)
How should we present the Christian message to both Christians and non-Christians? Why does God command believers to evangelize? A common question that's asked in the Theology Gals facebook group is, “What is Reformed?” When someone asks this question, it is answered with a variety of descriptions. One reason why this happens is that the understanding of what it means has evolved in recent years, and now has a far broader definition than it once did. Historically, the adjective Reformed has had a specific definition. R Scott Clark explains, “I have argued that there is a stable, historic, definition of the adjective: God’s Word as confessed (theology, piety, and practice) by the Reformed churches. As a matter of history, there was no doubt as to what was meant by the qualifier Reformed from the mid-16th century until about the mid-20th century.” I would agree with Dr. Clark that there is a historic definition and I am in agreement with how he has defined it. There have been various confessions since the time of the reformation which have been considered Reformed; today the most commonly used are the Westminster Standards and The Three Forms of Unity. I haven't forgotten about the Reformed Baptists. With some research you'll find that Reformed Baptist is a fairly new label, and it too has evolved in recent years and is now used more broadly. Before Reformed Baptist was used, confessional calvinistic Baptists used to be known as Particular Baptists. Even when the term was initially more widely used, it had a similar definition to Reformed, but specifically referring to those who held to certain Baptist confessions. In recent years, many began to use it as synonymous with calvinistic Baptist, including the non-confessional ones. In this episode of Theology Gals, my co-host Ashley explains that even she wore the label Reformed before she really knew what it meant. Now she holds to the Reformed confessions, but she claimed the label before she really understood what those were. Because it's now so broadly used, it's caused confusion. In this video from Pastor Zach of Westside Reformed Church, he explains the confusion this has caused. He uses a couple of examples to make the point, for instance, can a person who believes in baptism call himself a Baptist even though he believes in baptizing the babies of believers? Can't one just use Baptist the way they want to use it? I'm sure a Baptist would say, “That's not how it has historically been understood.” If I started calling myself a Baptist, that would cause confusion. Pastor Zach continues to explain that it would also cause confusion if someone like me, a Presbyterian, started calling myself a Lutheran just because I believe in justification by faith alone. I'm sure my Lutheran brothers would take issue with that, as I don't hold to their confessions and even disagree with them on several points. Some people have argued, “Why can't we just label ourselves Christians? Why do we need all these other labels?” Labels can be helpful. With various theological camps, Reformed distinguishes us from other theological systems. If I move somewhere and am looking for a new church, I'm going to want to attend one with like-minded believers who hold to the same confessions, and the same ecclesiology. I'm going to want to look for a Reformed or Presbyterian Church. And if a church describes itself as Reformed, I will have some expectations of what being a Reformed church means. I've put together several resources to go along with our podcast on what it means to be Reformed. We discuss the historical understanding, but also how it's used more broadly by many today, and why that's happened. R Scott Clark on the Necessity Of An Objective Definition Of Reformed. Here he describes some of the history of the adjective. A Wonderful Illustration Of The Necessity Of An Objective Definition Of Reformed by R Scott Clark In this short video which is part one on a series on the history of the United Reformed Church,

Family Worship Guide Memory Verses: Psalm 103:1-4 Day 1: Read Luke 8:22-25 and discuss: Without looking for the specific examples and just working from memory, in what parts of the Old Testament is Jesus foreshadowed? Where are there “types of Christ”? What is the significance of this truth (that the Old Testament is about Jesus)? Day 2: Read John 3:14, John 6:32-33, Rom. 5:12-21 (or the other references Pastor Scott used) and discuss: Explain how the NT writers interpreted Scripture (the OT) and why they did so? Why did the NT writers emphasize Christ as the substance? What did their emphasis reveal about their audiences’ spiritual needs? Explain how studying these types and their fulfillment in Christ could impact your daily life. Day 3: Read Luke 8:22-25 and discuss: If we are not careful, what do we tend to think will happen to us, since we are Christians? Why are so many Christians surprised by trials? Describe the most recent trial (or current one) and your initial reaction. Was it surprise or something else? Why? Homework: Read Luke 8:22-25 and Jonah 1:6-2:10. In this blast from the past, J. Warner talks about the essential Christian claims related to the Holy Spirit. What does the Bible teach about the Holy Spirit? Are there certain non-negotiable essentials that all of us, as Christians, must believe about the Holy Spirit in order to call ourselves Christians? Why does it even matter what we believe about the Holy Spirit? What difference does a proper understanding of the Spirit make in our daily lives as Christians?
What do we do when we have a falling out with other Christians? Why does God want to pursue peace with one another? How do we do that? How should we respond to unbelievers in order to pursue peace? In this sermon from Acts we look at Paul and Barnabas' division and separation and then how Paul adds Timothy but prepares him for ministry with Jewish non-believers.
You've mentioned that Yahweh derived from Canaanite polytheism, and I wonder if you could go into further detail on the subject and provide a list of suggested readings. Do the archetypal names Adam ("man" or "mankind") and Eve ("mother of all living") mean that they were intended as mythic figures? Does Paul's language indicate he thought of Adam as an historical individual, and would that be common in first-century Judaism? What about Pharisaic Judaism is so at odds with the teachings of pseudo-Jesus? Why are fundamentalists so attached to the King James translation? Doesn't it matter that King James was gay? Is the information age going to be the death of religion (except maybe as literature)? There are 67 years between the death of Hezekiah through the reigns of Manasseh and Amon up to the time of Josiah finding the scroll of the Torah. Are we to believe that the inhabitants of Judah had completely forgotten the Torah in that 67 year period? You have said that there is no archaeological evidence to substantiate the Exodus story, but does the evidence show any movements at all in the Sinai? Might Irish monasticism have been influenced by the Desert Fathers of Egypt? What did Egypt represent for the Israelites in the Old Testament and then for the early Christians? Why did Judaism and its offshoots become dominant in the West rather than some modified form of the Egyptian religion? I was wondering if you could discuss the theology of Zoroastrianism, in particular the aspects that influenced Abrahamic faiths.
One of the most difficult books in the bible to both teach and to be taught is James. He is very "in your face"! But James is where Dr. Waterbury is going in this new series during the "Windows of the Heart" program. Why is this book often referred to as the "Handbook for Christians"? Why is it so important that our works follow our faith? Is James in agreement with the rest of the New Testament writers?
Why are there so many fake Christians? Why do so many people claim to be Christians, but don't live like Christians should?
Why, in a nation established on tolerance, is there no tolerance for Christians? Why, when 78% of our population is Christian, are Christian students and teachers persecuted, censored and fired for simply being Christian? Ironically, it's being done under the guise of "tolerance." Historian Bill Federer, author of Backfired - A Nation Founded on Religious Tolerance No Longer Tolerates its Founder's Religion, says the concept of "tolerance" came from Christ.
How does church polity connect to our discipleship as Christians? Why is sound church government critical to evangelism and missions? Jonathan Leeman asks Mark Dever, Chad Van Dixhoorn, and Hunter Powell.
