To know Jess is to love Jess and Jess' love of this special fiber arts community is very evident in everything she does. From in her yarn shop on Bainbridge Island, WA to Flock Fiber Festival, a yarn show in Seattle, WA, celebrating a love of all things wool, the fibers arts community is so very lucky to have these two spaces to come together and celebrate these things that we love and bring us the more joy! Jen hopped on a ferry and headed to out Bainbridge to chat with Jess about La Mercerie and their new space (which... spoiler alert was the home of Churchmouse Yarns for years!) and also how Flock is growing in it's second year and the things that she's doing to keep it so very special. So grab your WIP and hit record and we hope to see you at Flock Fiber Festival! Brainy Thing: 20:13 Behind the Redwood Curtain. 34:00 What We're Learning from our Knitting Margaret knitted two double stranded hats. The first was the Double-Quick Marled Beanie from Churchmouse Yarns and Teas https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/double-quick-marled-beanie using Rowan Kid Classic from Churchmouse Yarns and Teas in a subtle cream and pale grey color. She modified this slightly using HandMaiden Casbah https://www.ravelry.com/yarns/search#sort=best&query=handmaiden%20fine%20yarns and Casbah Silk Fine. Catherine still needs to assemble her gnome but has started Stephen West's Metalouse from Knitty. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/metalouse. Stephen West. https://www.ravelry.com/designers/stephen-west Brainy Thing We hear a lot about making positive changes for our mental and physical health but changing habits is difficult. Margaret reports on a video from Dr. Kelly McGonigal on Willpower. She's also written a book on it as well as a book on movement. https://www.bestyear.life/kellymcgonigal https://www.ted.com/talks/kelly_mcgonigal_how_to_make_stress_your_friend movement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtc1iWm_KCI https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_McGonigal Behind the Redwood Curtain: Catherine shares information on Fernbridge, the 110 year old structure bridging Highway 101 with the town of Ferndale. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fernbridge_(bridge) In Episode 124 of Teaching Your Brain to Knit we explore some of the elements of willpower than could help us make positive change. In Our knitting, we talk about two double stranded hats and a new heavily textured shawl. And we consider a classic landmark of the Northcoast -- Fernbridge. With all the joy sucked out of life at the moment, it's time to turn festive up to 11! As a massive Christmas fan, I'm always one to have the real tree picked out, chopped down and in the house by the last week in November. This year, I'm planning to go a little bigger on the decoration front and add quite a bit more to interiors to get in the spirit. After all, it's not like we're going to be anywhere but indoors for a while. And when it comes to fairy lights, more is always more. So this week I have a pattern selection to share with you for knitted Christmas wreaths. I'm aware some of my lovely listeners don't celebrate Christmas, so I've been sure to add some suggestions that are suitable for you too. As always, there's a mix of free and paid patterns. Where possible, links go to designer's own sites. Be aware some links go to Ravelry if you have accessibility difficulties on that site. Pattern Pick - Knitted Christmas Wreaths 1) Woolly Wreath & Garland by Church Mouse Yarns and Teas 2) Awreatha by Rachel Kluesner 3) Woodland Wreath by Frankie Brown 4) Hampstead Wreath by Wendy Baker and Belinda Boaden 5) Merry Knitmas Advent Wreath by Sue Stratford 6) Christmas Jumper Wreaths by Zoe Michel Images and links to these patterns are in the full show notes at www.shinybees.com/164 Credits - Music for this episode is with kind permission of Adam and the Walter Boys with 'I Need a Drink' available on iTunes.
Brainy: 21:26 Mind/Body Depression, Pain and the Brain Behind the Redwood Curtain: 28:04 What We’re Learning from Our Knitting Both Catherine and Margaret (without consultation with each other) made hats for themselves. Catherine knit the Socky Slouchy Hat by Lauren Sanchez https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/socky-slouchy-hat Margaret’s was the Churchmouse Yarns and Teas Boyfriend Watch Cap https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/boyfriend-watch-capMargaret also tried out the famous and infamous ball band washcloth pattern but she extended the length into a towel. She used Knit Pick’s new twisted Dishie in Black and White with the contrasting yarn in matching solid black. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/ballband-dishcloth It was a fun pattern to do. And Catherine is taking up the gauntlet and hosting the 2020 Potholder exchange. https://www.ravelry.com/groups/2020-potholder-swap. Brainy Thing: Catherine leads us into a deep dig into the Mind-Body phenomena, specifically the relationship between pain and the brain. Behind the Redwood Curtain. In our little town and probably yours, dozens of businesses are joining the campaign to protect our communities. Here are some we mentioned: Holly Yashi https://www.hollyyashi.com/ Kokotat https://kokatat.com/ Bubbles https://www.bubbles-arcata.com/?ccUser= North Coast Dance http://www.atlpublishing.com/NCD/Mobile.html North Coast Repertory https://ncrt.net/ Today in Episode 113 of Teaching Your Brain to Knit we dive deeply into the mind/body phenomena specifically Pain and Depression and how you might improve both; We discuss our new knitting: Hats and a dishtowel plus Catherine takes up the challenge to host the Potholder swap. And in Behind the Redwood Curtain, we celebrate the local business who are making masks, face guards, and sanitizers to help protect our community. We’re sure there are businesses in your community that are doing the same thing. And before we begin, I just want to note that I’m not happy with the sound quality in this episode. We spent a lot of time and some money trying to figure out a way to record remotely with our older computers but this was the best we could do this time. Rest assured that we will continue to experiment and hopefully have a better quality next time. Until then, stay well.
Brainy Thing: 23:31 Behind the Redwood Curtain: 34:16 What We Learned from Our Knitting Catherine has found the perfect combination of yarn, needles and pattern in the Baker’s Street Scarf https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baker-street-scarf by Joan of Dark and on Knitty http://knitty.com/ISSUEff15/index.php. She used Brittany birchwood needles and Blue Moon Fiber Company’s yarn in the Evermore colorway. Margaret is proclaiming Sarah Schira the Queen of the gnomes after investigation into gnome-dom. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/search#query=sarah%20schira&sort=best&view=captioned_thumbs&page=1 Margaret knit two of them for gifts and is joining Sarah’s newest mystery knit-a-long for Gnemo: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gnome-is-where-you-hang-your-hat. There are scores, maybe hundred of other gnome options. Margaret mentions the Jolly Wee Elf by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jolly-wee-elf She also knit one of the five designs in Holiday Trees pattern by Yellow Cosmo. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/holiday-trees-2 She bought the kit on Bluprint and used its Cloudborn Superwash in dark green and white. Brainy Thing: Chocolate just doesn’t taste good, it has a host of natural chemicals that are good for our bodies and minds and she’ll reveal the secret of why it is a particularly good choice for Valentine Days Gifts. Behind the Redwood Curtain: We visit a boutique craft chocolate company in Humboldt, Dick Taylor, that ships all over the world. (We got to sample all of their products.) If you want to join Sara Schira’s gnome-a-long that starts February 12, check this out: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gnome-is-where-you-hang-your-hat.

Brainy thing: 24:18 Behind the Redwood Curtain: 29:40 What we’ve learned from our knitting (and crochet): Margaret completed her Quest Shawl by Linda Dean featured in the Jimmy Beans Advent Crochet event. It was great fun but she was glad to finally finish it. Quest Shawl:https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/quest-shawl. Then she completed several small projects: A souvenir from Stitches West, Rebecca Danger’s Wickedly Peaceful Polar Bear: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/wickedly-peaceful-polar-bear-christmas-ornament. Some eggs including one by Nicky Fijalkowska in her book Knitted Birds https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/knitted-birds-by-nicky-fijalkowska and one that Margaret freelanced on her own. Finally, to mix up needle sizes, she finished the Jolly Wee Elf by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/jolly-wee-elf in worsted weight yarn and size 5 needles. In this process she became curious about casting on small circular objects and found the following links helpful: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hRHzIYEK7a8 and circular Cast on: https://knitmuch.com/4-cast-ons-for-knitting-circular-lace/ She also found a great tutorial for stuffing these items by Sarah Schira from Imagined Landscapes, famously a gnome designer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkSFzJDULFA Catherine sadly lost the bag with her textured blanket squares but started with a new project for the Welcome Blanket project: https://www.welcomeblanket.org/patterns/ .She’s using Caron's Yarnspirations in the summer berry colorway. Brainy Thing: How do birds migrate and bees find their way? One way is through magnetoreception and now scientists have recorded human responses to changes in the magnetic field. But test subjects didn’t seem able to consciously feel those changes. https://www.livescience.com/65018-human-brain-senses-magnetic-field.html http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/crux/2019/03/18/human-brain-magnetoreception-magnetic-field-sense/#.XJBsGGRKhFQ http://theconversation.com/new-evidence-for-a-human-magnetic-sense-that-lets-your-brain-detect-the-earths-magnetic-field-113536 Behind the Redwood Curtain: County residents are concerned that the Netflix series Murder Mountain will cast a negative shadow on Southern Humboldt County, but Catherine tells us about a little known treasure in the middle of remote and wild SoHum: The Redwoods Monastery or Our Lady of the Redwoods in White Thorn operated by Cistercian nuns and who also market their delicious honey. https://www.redwoodsabbey.org/ https://store.redwoodsabbey.org/collections/honey We’re back with Catherine and Margaret in the classic format of our podcast Teaching Your Brain to Knit, number One Hundred and Three. We share what we’re learning from our knitting: crocheting a shawl, knitting small items and starting a new welcome blanket. Margaret reports new studies that show that human brains respond to changes in the magnetic field but people don’t consciously perceive them. What does that mean? We don’t know. And Catherine talks about a remote monastery and retreat in Southern Humboldt.

Sponsor: Churchmouse Yarns and Teas is nestled in the little alcove of Madrone Lane on the beautiful Bainbridge Island in the Puget Sound. Just up the street from the ferry, this was my first local yarn shop…a place I remember visiting in my teens, mesmerized and enchanted by this cozy yarn and tea emporium. It was what I dreamed of aspiring to as a knitter, a place I visited often over the years as I grew up and now look back on as a key memory in my fiber journey…a push in the right direction. Churchmouse opened in 2000 with the intention to help people make their lives beautiful by making beautiful things. From their carefully curated selection of yarns, patterns, gifts and tea, it’s easy to see why Churchmouse has become a favorite for both local and distant knitters. Make sure to visit Churchmouse Yarns and Tea when in the Seattle and Olympic Peninsula area and visit online at churchmouseyarns.com to experience a bit of the magic from the coziness of your chair. And make sure to follow on Instagram @churchmouseyarns, and join the Churchmouse group on Ravelry for knitalongs and support from the design team. Fiber folk: Paola is an […]
There is knitting in the show, but we spend the first 15 minutes in non-fiber chit chat. Does that tell you how we feel about our knitting right now? We are both in a project low right now with long term projects and projects in transition phases. Finishing these items and the excitement of new cast-ons will come in time, but for right now we battle the long project blues. Projects Marsha continues to work on the Stephen West Garter Squish afghan she is calling Frank's Spirit Yarn Afghan. She is working color twelve of fourteen and is ready to be done. It is hard to work on because it is getting so big and heavy. Definitely not portable! Marsha has been highly distracted by her new addiction...wash cloths! She as made WAHMingIt by Amber Perry, Spa Day Facecloth by Anne Mancine, Atomic Washcloth by Nanette Cormack, and is working on Ballband Washcloth by Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne. * As I was writing the show notes I realized that I made the Atomic Washcloth completely wrong. The peach color should be stockinette and the blue garter stitch. Oh well. It's a design feature. :-) Marsha is planning for her next project. She is looking at shawl patterns to use the Duren Dyeworks yarn she purchased at the NoCKR's retreat. Javala by Cailliau Berangere and Asunder by Lisa Mutch are under consideration. Marsha is also inspired the the poncho discussion and thinks the universe is sending her a message because she found eight skeins of Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool in navy at the Goodwill. Two possible poncho patterns are Easy Folded Poncho by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas and Mesa by Yumiko Alexander. Kelly has finished the knitting on the octopus and decided to wash and block before stuffing and sewing. Sewing will be a loooooooong project with eight tentacles longer than sleeves, plus the underbelly. The NoCKRs shawl came back out long enough for Kelly to make a mistake and then proceed for two more rows. Now it is back in the bag awaiting a little tinking. Ugh! She did successfully start a new pair of socks just for knitting during the recording. So now there are two pairs on the needles--both from yarns she bought this month at Lambtown. The green, yellow and orange pair are Invictus Yarns and the red, gray, and yellow pair are Duren Dyeworks. “Advent-ewes” Marsha wants to learn more about crochet. She loves Kelly's sweater Latticework Cardigan by Michelle DuNair. She also loves Irene Floral Lace Cardigan by Vicky Chan and Cairo Jacket by Doris Chan. There is an afghan call Modern Blanket of Flowers that is gorgeous, plus an intriguing shawl by Esther Sandorf called Stash Buster Blarf. Kelly will be attending the Fibershed 2016 Wool and Fine Fiber Symposium on November 19. The event has an interesting mix of talks-from fiber producers at one end of the fiber pipeline, to artisans and retailers on the other. If you enjoy the show, tell a friend! Use your podcast app to share the episode.

This episode we talk about finished knitting/weaving/spinning, new WIPS, the impending changes in how EU crafters buy their digital goods, and some quick projects for those unexpected last minute gifts.News and Events:Not much to discuss in events, between when the episode goes live and the next episode, so moving right along...On and off our needles/wheels/looms: Allison has finished the Selbu Modern beret in Koigu, and the Buzzba Hat by Woolly Wormhead from yarn that she dyed at a workshop last autumn with Debbie Tomkins at Toft Alpacas. She is working on the skull sweater for her brother for Christmas, and the Chunky Cable Hat. She is also well into preprocessing the Lady Pearl vest in some handspun, and the Herringbone Poncho from existing stash.Rachel has finished one sock of a new design inspired by a pair of socks she recently got in the mail from the States that were knitted by her great-grandfather. She also finished up a warp-faced woven scarf in handspun BFL from the Hello Yarn Fiber Club in the colorway "Scorch", with Panda Silk for weft. There has been secret spinning. The Insight Pullover is still continuing, and she is wishing it were done because it's going to be super cozy (Editorial note: Kate Heppell is now running a KAL for the Insight Pullover on Ravelry. Just in case anyone is interested...).V-Day: 1 January 2015, aka The Tax Man Cometh:Requisite disclaimer: we are not tax professionals in any way, shape or form. If you are in the EU and concerned about how the changes to VAT on digital products and services may affect you or your business you should contact a tax professional and/or HMRC. The situation is changing rapidly, even at this late date, so please use your own best judgement and get informed. Come the first of January, all knitters/crochers/consumers of digital resources in the EU are going to experience a bit of a change in how they are taxed on their newly-acquired digital resources (i.e. knitting patterns). We interviewed Louise Zass-Bangham of Inspiration Knits to get an overview of the upcoming changes, and what they mean for knitters and crafters in the EU and elsewhere. Additional resources:Ysolda blogged about the changes, with further links.Louise has posted a breakdown of what the changes will mean for people who are used to getting their patterns through Ravelry on her blog.Coincidentally, the same day we spoke with Louise, this lovely cartoon tripped across our Twitter feeds: Cartoon by Dave Walker. Read what Dave Walker, a cartoonist, has to say about VATMOSS. He also includes some links to more information. There is also an absolutely huge, massive thread in the Ravelry Shopkeepers group you can dig in to if you've got several spare days, and a thread detailing how Ravelry is addressing the issue here.Last minute gift ideas:In which we talk about some super quick projects that can be whipped up in a few hours.Last minute slouch by madelinetosh, a hat using 2 yarns held togetherGAP-tastic Cowl by Jen Geigley, bulky yarn and seed stitchLast-Minute Cowls by Churchmouse Yarns and Teas, in bulky yarn, with lots of different stitch patternsLast Minute Scarf by Hazel Donnelly, in bulky yarn Rasta Neckwarmer by Breean Elyse MillerSuper-Bulky Socks (toe up or top down) by Liat GatAntler Hat (or any free hat) by Tin Can KnitsAlso mentioned: French Press Felted Slippers, Fiber Trends Felted ClogsWrap up:We'll have a short episode just before Christmas and recap our Road Trip to the Bath Christmas Market! Fields End organizer Barbara Clarke and bestselling author Ann Hood tell BCB host Channie Peters about a multi-faceted event in the auditorium of Bainbridge Island Museum of Art on the evening of Saturday, October 18. Ann Hood will fly in from her East Coast home to lead a troupe of actors in reading excerpts from "Knitting Yarns: Writers on Knitting". The book, which she edited, is a collection of essays by well-known authors on their knitting experiences. Selections from the book will be read by Bainbridge's finest actors: Dinah Manoff, George Shannon, Barbara Deering and Liz Ellis. The readings are directed by Kate Carruthers. Ann Hood is the author of the just-released novel "An Italian Wife" and editor of the bestselling collection of essays on knitting. Ann became an avid knitter in 2002 to help get through the grief of losing her daughter, Grace. Through knitting, she was able to pick up her craft again and share her painful journey with readers. Knitting Yarns is a testament to the power of craft to sustain us through human survival and triumph alike. Barbara Clarke describes Ann as a fine novelist, essayist, in-demand teacher, mother, and for this event – Knitting the Arts Together – an ardent knitter. She is here for one weekend – October 17th and 18th -- and will also meet and greet customers at Churchmouse Yarns and Teas on Friday night from 7 to 8:00 PM. Barbara discovered Knitting Yarns through one of the essays in the book by Barbara Kingsolver. She thought it would be wonderful to bring Ann to Bainbridge and have a troupe of actors provide the extra benefit of their dramatic readings. This is NOT a lady's-only evening or just for knitters. The readings will cover a wide spectrum of experiences and insights, and will end with Ann reading from her own essay. This event is co-sponsored by Fields End, Churchmouse Yarns and Teas, and Eagle Harbor Book Co. Making the evening even more special is a "goody bag” waiting for you at the door. A book signing and reception will follow. Purchase a Fields End ticket online, or at the door (if tickets remain): $30.00. Seating is limited. Needle Notes Leaaline asked, Paula, what is your FAVORITE quince and co. Yarn? Answer: I love them all but have a special fondness for Chickadee and Tern because I more often knit with lighter weight yarns. Hyla Brook will be released in June. Calls for 2 skeins of Quince & Co Tern which is a fingering weight wool/silk blend. 442 yds fingering weight. This shawl is completely reversible and has no purl stitches! Lil Bit by Laura Linneman.
