The year 2024 proved to be another robust one for emerging U.S. state privacy law. Seven states joined the ranks, bringing the total up to 19.   Unlike previous years, however, 2024 underwent a paradigm shift away from the standard framework influenced by the draft Washington State Privacy Act. For the Future of Privacy Forum's Keir Lamont, CIPP/US, and Husch Blackwell's David Stauss, CIPP/E, CIPP/US, CIPT, FIP, PLS, 2024 marked the end of what Lamont calls the "Pax Washingtonia" era for state privacy law.   While attending the IAPP Privacy. Security. Risk. conference in Los Angeles, California, IAPP Editorial Director Jedidiah Bracy caught up with Lamont and Stauss to discuss this busy year in state privacy law, as well as what to expect with rulemaking and enforcement at the state level.

The second thing I did for overcoming impostor syndrome was just adopting this 1% better mindset that you're not seeking perfection. Every month or every year, you're going to improve yourself a little bit. The third thing is to just say yes to opportunity, even if you don't feel like you're 100% fit. And I think that goes more for applying for roles if you're looking for jobs, if you don't meet 100% of the job description, that's okay, you should still apply. Privacy is such an emerging field, and people encourage diversity, so you never know what your unique skill set would bring to the organisation, and maybe that's what they're looking for. Due to the increasing number of data breaches, data security and privacy protection are critical to organizations, and information security is concerned with preventing unauthorized access to sensitive information. Organizations must implement security controls and measures to manage and mitigate risks associated with data breaches. The cost of not adhering to data privacy laws is high, as is the potential of losing customers' trust. Hence, information security and data protection professionals are in high demand. Organizations look for CIPP/E, CIPM, and CIPT-certified personnel as they can implement strategies, policies, processes, and techniques in a better way to control cybersecurity risks while taking responsible data usage into consideration. Since InfosecTrain is now an official training partner (OTP) of International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP), we equip you with a comprehensive understanding of data security and privacy protection.
