In celebration of host Mike Pecci's Scifi-Horror film going viral this week, we are re-releasing the 12KM related episodes. This one features Assistant director Vladimir Minuty who was responsible for the actors blocking during the big steadi-cam shot in 12 Kilometers! How many of you actually know what an assistant director does on set? It's always surprising to see the number of people in our business that can't really answer that question. Well on today's show, host Mike Pecci is determined to shed some light on one of the most important jobs in film, television, music videos and commercials. The leader of the entire crew, the voice that gets us through the day, the assistant director! Our guest today is longtime collaborator Vladimir Minuty – Assistant director, storyboard artist, and director. In this episode the two old friends talk about the techniques used to organize and run a film set, how to translate a directors vision, learning about a different path into the business for young students and working with great filmmakers like Errol Morris. Listening to these two, it's obvious that they have had a blast working together and it's fun to spend about an hour inside their inner circle. You've heard the term "Now, more than ever..." enough times by now to make you sick. Well, now's our time to use it because now, more than ever, it is imperative to focus on creating and maintaining relationships as creatives. When you're on set as a Director, and you and your actors are locked in on the same vision and idea of the scene: that's where the magic happens. Director Mike Pecci spends this episode making that connection with our guest actor, Clara Rugaard. The question of whether you need to move to LA to make films has been discussed on this show more times than we can count. Host Mike Pecci has repeatedly promoted making films in your hometown. But making films in Boston may seem like skiing in the Adirondacks. They're fine, but you can't really get the same kind of experience as you would going west. Directors Dustin Devlin and Jack Lemay showed that not only can you make a film in Boston worth bragging about, but that it can focus on skiing in the Adirondacks. Mike, Jack, and Dustin discuss the benefits of indie filmmaking, the excitement of action sports filmmaking, and why people might actually like winters in the northeast. When was the first time you saw a Quentin Tarantino film? For some of us, it was in a theater. For others, a friend put it on the TV. For the younger audience, it might have been Netflix. But for our guest Richard Gladstein, the first time he saw a Quentin Tarantino film it was a script on his desk. In fact, he was one of the first to see Tarantino's work. Richard's experience in the industry ranges from handing out dog biscuits to producing some of Hollywood's biggest films: Reservoir Dogs, Finding Neverland, The Bourne Identity, and Pulp Fiction. Now, he is the Executive Director of the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema. Both Host Mike Pecci and our AP Liam discuss with Richard his producing career, his experience working as one of Tarantino's closest collaborators, and some advice he has for young filmmakers: a topic very important to Richard whose current role is the Executive Director of the Feirstein Graduate School of Cinema. If you haven't seen The Mandalorian (*cough* Liam *cough*), you're missing out on more than just a cute puppet and Werner Herzog. Instead of green or blue screens, Season 1 utilized LED backgrounds called The Volume that allowed for a completely virtual world to be the backdrop of the show. For the first time, you could move a mountain or shoot during golden hour all day long. This is the future of production, and Season 2 looks to be even crazier. We needed to take a deep dive into this technology, which is why our guest for this episode is Ian Milham, the Virtual Production Supervisor for Seasons 1 & 2 of The Mandalorian. He's the one who can move the mountain in the background of a shot, and he's the one that spoke with Host Mike Pecci about the technology that is going to change our industry. Ian bridges the distance between video games and film production with his experience at LucasArts, being the Art Director for Dead Space, and now with ILM and Disney, so be prepared for a nerdy deep dive into video games, virtual production, and maybe get a look at what's to come with Season 2 of The Mandalorian. The path to success as a filmmaker is littered with lonely and often stressful moments. Most of the time you feel like you are just trying to convince people to let you try out your ideas, and when you get the gig, you are thrown into the deep end to figure it out. Many of us never get the chance to see or hear how another director makes their way through these early steps. That’s why an episode like this one is so special. On this episode of In Love with the Process Podcast, host Mike Pecci sits down with fellow filmmaker Stuart Valberg and discuss the things they love and hate about film sets. Stew comes from a background in the AD department and has worked on some amazing shows and films. More recently he has been working for David Fincher on his Netflix series MINDHUNTER. It’s fascinating to hear how he prepares his own productions and how his experience as an assistant director has shaped his filmmaking style. In this episode, host Mike Pecci has a deep conversation with director Zach Merck (from the RIDLEY SCOTT CREATIVE GROUP)about the power of opening up and sharing with other directors. Zach started his career as an assistant to the legendary Tony Scott. He then went on to direct music videos for bands like Converge and Shadows Fall. You all have seen his commercial work. Do you know those Chevy ads with real people being asked questions about Chevy trucks that are coming out of the floor or reveal from behind a huge hangar door? Yup Zach directs all of those. This is a fantastic look into the life of a working director who is willing to let us in and see his process! Check out Zach's work at https://www.zachmerck.com/ @zachmerck and @dawnofnostalgia for his movie poster collection (it's awesome!) Join host Mike Pecci as he goes on a Bar Safari in San Fransisco! What is a Bar Safari? Well, the rules are simple; Find the most run down dive bar in the city, go and talk to the bartender and have them give you a list of their favorite watering holes in town. Have one drink and or one food item per spot. Slowly make your way through your beer-soaked treasure map making sure to constantly verify the list with other patrons, bartenders, and poets along the way. Adventuring along with Pecci in this episode are drinking buddies Matt Bach, Eric Brown and Chris Shreve from Puget systems. Together the guys talk about how fun it is to travel for work and the crazy situations they often find themselves in.
