This week I spoke to Brendan Francis Newnam, the former longtime host of The Dinner Party Download, who went on to create and executive produce The Paris Review Podcast. He is the author of the book Brunch Is Hell and (most relevant to this conversation) he's the host of the podcast Not Lost. It's a travel show Brendan started after the end of both his long-term relationship and his decade-long radio show, The Dinner Party Download.Brendan "found himself on the wrong side of 35, unemployed, single, and with most of his friends ensconced in relationships and parenthood or both." So he took a microphone, hit the road with friends, and his adventure became Not Lost. The premise of the show is Brendan and his friends trying to get invited to a dinner party with locals in each city they visit. We talk about how he made the show and I picked out a few clips that particularly landed with me, including the balance between sharing vulnerably and holding back, how our trauma impacts our openness to relationships, and thoughts on loneliness, rejection, and connection. And what doing the show taught him about, intimacy, friendship, choosing a city to live in, nature and more. We also talked about interviewing and podcasting at the end, which raised some interesting questions for me. Show Notes:- Listen to Not Lost on Pushkin | Apple Podcasts | Spotify | Youtube- My favorite episodes: Montreal | Portland- Follow Brendan on Instagram- Take the friendship breakup survey from me and Kayleen Schaefer here- The Let It Out Kits are 32% off with the code 32- Sign up for the waitlist for the re-imagined Creative Underdogs/In Process (coming soon)!- Subscribe to our newsletter to get show notes + essays, etc. sent to your inbox- Follow @letitouttt on Instagram. I'm @katiedalebout Sponsors:I started drinking these little green productivity shots and I love them so much. Introducing Not Lost, the latest show in the Pushkin podcast slate. It's hosted by Brendan Francis Newnam, long-time host of the radio show Dinner Party Download, who's now the force behind many of Pushkin's audiobook originals. Not Lost is a travel show about finding yourself in places you've never been. A few years back, Brendan was a bit lost himself – his radio show and relationship ended simultaneously. So he hit the road, always with a friend, and ventured out to new cities. Not Lost takes us from Montreal to Mexico City, as Brendan and crew seek the essence of the place, while angling for an invitation to a stranger's house for dinner. Hello, friend-o! Marc Hershon here to host Epi243 of Succotash Shut-In, The Soundcast Stimulus Package. By the look of things – fingers cross, masks still on, and socially distanced yet – things in the US of A are sort of showing signs of getting…dare I say it…post-pandemic-ready. Maybe. Who knows? People were burning their masks in Idaho in some bizarre “freedom ritual”. Very reminiscent of the exact same activity that happened right here in San Francisco around 1918 when they thought the Spanish Flu was tapering off. That didn’t go so well and things actually got worse. But we’ll hope for the best and you never know – maybe mask smoke will be as effective as the scientifically developed vaccines in knocking this thing down. My main point of bringing up the current state of affair is that, as the pandemic eases, me and my every-other-weekly co-host Tyson Saner maybe restoring this soundcast to some semblance of normal. As you may know, the 10th anniversary of this show is just a month away, in April, and if we feel the spirit move us, we’re likely to restoring the original title of Succotash, the Comedy Soundcast Soundcast. Although, actually the REAL original title was Succotash, the Comedy PODCAST PODCAST. But we ditched the P-word for the “soundcast” moniker a couple of years in and that’s who we are. If you have anything to say on the matter, whether it’s about our decade-o-versary or the impending title change, you can write  us at either m-a-r-c@succotashshow.com or t-y-s-o-n@succotashshow.com. Or hit us up on the socials. Or call our toll-full warm line at (818) 921-7212 and leave us a message. Speaking of Tyson, if you missed his most recent installment, Epi242, never fear! It featured clips from the Valley Boys Podcast, The Dinner Party Download, and The Record Store Day Podcast. Hooray! You can still catch up at Spotify, Stitcher, Apple or Google Podcasts, the Laughable app, iHeart Radio, YouTube, or even on our own damn homesite — http://SuccotashShow.com But let’s go ahead and get into “now” mode. As in what I have in store for you today, right here. I’m calling Episode 243 “Soundcastin’ Friends” and while, admittedly, we call a lot of soundcasters friends, I pulled out a quartet of clips from some of the ones that popped into mind recently because they either reached out or I heard them talking about me OR I’m actually in the clip. Yes, I’m THAT shallow. The shows in question are Chillpak Hollywood, Screams & Moans, Waking from the American Dream, and the 4 Corners Podcast. The last one actually features a friend of the show who is a guest on 4 Corners, but that’s a technicality. In addition, this show is sponsored by the Massage-O-Pedic Trousers by Henderson’s Pants. CLIPS Chillpak Hollywood Hour Okay, if you know our show then you know this show, the Chillpak Hollywood Hour, hosted by Dean Haglund and Phil Leirness. Listening to Chillpak was one of the inspirations for me to start up Succotash, and the guys were my first interview outside of Studio P. We even had a couple years run where we were trying to get a real old-fashioned feud going to try to get some press but that never came together. I was recently honored to be asked to be part of a little comedy roundtable on a two-part episode of the show, along with Dean and the thoughtful, insightful, and wickedly funny Suli McCullough. Phil was moderating and we talked about our comedy influences, how we got started performing, and a variety of other topics. In this clip we hit on improv, the San Francisco International Comedy Competition, and Suli’s high school specialty, the Dumb Joke of the Day. 4 Corners PodcastEast Coast comedian Lenny Marcus hosts the 4 Corners Podcast,  and runs a tight ship: 4 topics. 15 minutes per topic. A recent guest on the show was Barry Weintraub, a very funny political comedian and friend of mine for years. He was even my boss at one time, back when I was a stringer for his Comedy USA magazine. He’s been back in his native New York for along time now, was hosting the Schmoozecast out of the Comic Strip and, as I said, was just on 4 Corners where he and Lenny yakked about saving money and a little about comedian and former Succotash guest Ritch Shydner… Screams & MoansOkay, this is two soundcast friends at once, neither of who have I ever met face to face. The show is Screams & Moans, hosted by Megan Pentecost, who I only knew for years from her Twitter handle @PodcastWhore, but who was a very early listener to Succotash who went on to start her own jam, to which her logline is: “It's the podcast about movies and sex but not together because that would be porn.” She recently had Jason McNamara guesting, AKA “Jabs” from The Dhead Factor and Boganwood soundcasts. If that name’s familiar, Jabs was on THIS show not long ago, back in Epi213 “Doin’ It Down Under w/Jason McNamara”. And, just like me, Megan screwed up and forgot to hit record the first time around had to re-record the whole episode with Jabs a second time. I guess she picked up a thing or two listening to this show. In this clip, they’re talking about the movie Event Horizon. Waking from the American DreamThe next clip has a little hair on it because the episode of Waking from the American Dream that I got it from dropped last November 2020. It was the most recent episode I could find. Hosted by yet another friend of this show, Kelly Carlin, it’s not exactly a comedy soundcast but Kelly is witty as hell as well as being smart and insightful as well. She’s been cooped up just like the rest of the intelligent folks for the past year and I love what she has to say here about her jigsaw puzzle experience… That’s all I got for you this day, friend-o! Tyson Saner will be back in this same feed next week with Episode 244 and a batch of new soundcast clips. I plan to return the week after that with an interview instead of clips, but we’ll have to see if that comes together. It WON’T be Meghan Markle and Prince Harry and that’s all I’m going to say. Until we meet again stay 6 feet out of trouble, wash those filthy mitts, mask that ugly mug, and if anyone asks if you’re heard anything good lately, won’t you please pass the Succotash? — Marc Hershon

Saluton, estas mi Tyson Saner. I'm your every-other-week host of this program that is currently called Succotash Shut-In. Welcome to Episode 242. Last week on Epi241, "Crossin' The Pond", show creator and other every-other-week host Marc Hershon brought you a quartet of clips from soundcasts from England that we had not featured before. The shows clipped in question are Looks Familiar, CheapShow, Rule of Three, and The Adam Buxton Podcast. It's a fun episode and you can still find it at our homesite, http://SuccotashShow.com, as well as on Apple and Google Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, the Laughable app and wherever soundcasts are found and streamed and/or downloaded. This show I've put together for you is comprised of a trio of clips from mostly places around the U.S.A. Our featured clips are from Valley Boys Podcast, The Dinner Party Download, and The Record Store Day Podcast. And if you're feeling a tad "kidnappy", this episode is sponsored by Henderson's Pants new Ransom Pants! CLIPS Valley Boys Podcas‪t‬ Two unlikely best friends, Dave Weasel and Brandon Collins, fight about everything. One is a cuckservative douchebag, the other a liberal comedian. Our clip is from February 4th, 2021, their Epi30 AKA "Dirty Thirt‪y‬", when the boys were discussing Dave's foiled plot to start an Only Fans scheme, Brandon argues his prostitute habit over dating, Kim Jeong Newsom, and Biden's first two weeks. The Dinner Party Downloa‪d‬ The Dinner Party Download is a fast and funny hour of culture, food and conversation: “public radio’s arts & leisure section.” Their blurb tells us that, "In every episode you’ll learn a joke; bone up on an odd bit of history and then wash it down with a themed cocktail recipe; meet artists of note; have your burning etiquette questions answered; savor an emerging food trend; and hear your new favorite song. Plus, unconventional wisdom from hosts Rico Gagliano and Brendan Francis Newnam." OUr clip hails from Episode 269, featuring Mel Brooks, Greta Gerwig, and AC Newma‪n‬, originally broadcast back on September 5th, 2014. The Record Store Day Podcast‬ From the people who created Record Store Day, The Record Store Day Podcast with Paul Myers is an informative, record store-centric interview show featuring conversations with great guests talking about records, record stores and experiences in the physical retail space. We feature a clip from just a couple of weeks ago that dropped February 22nd, with guests Michael Milosh of Rhye, Dana Gould, and David Swider of indie record store The End Of All Music‪‬. We here at Succotash Shut-In have been dropping episodes of this sort of "Hey, here's some things you might want to listen to more of..." content in some form or another for almost 10 years now. Sometimes it is mind-boggling to think of how much cumulative content is stored ini the archives at www.succotashshow.com…so many shows clipped and folks spoken to at various points in their existences...which is a result of so much listening to other people speak, sometimes at great length, to find that "perfect" or "surely good enough" moment that we have decided to feature in the "tasting plate" or "Whitman's Sampler" aesthetic that is what this program has mostly been, when it hasn't been about chatting with some of soundcasting's most interesting personalities that is. BTW, I don't think that I'm the king of run-on sentences but I'm at least peerage. Next week, Marc Hershon will be your host for Episode 243 and he will have more for you to enjoy. So, until we meet again, please wash your hands, wear a mask in public, be respectful of each other's anxiety as best as you can, and if someone anywhere in the world including on Twitter or whatever social media platform you use to communicate with asks if you've heard any good or interesting podcasts lately…yes, they will probably say "podcasts" still if they haven't been listening to us…would you please, pass the Succotash? — Tyson Saner

I love DPD, and still listen to this day (If you don't you are a fool). So what happens when you get two podcasters in a room together?  A lot of awesome conversation, and that is what you are going to get right here.  Rico Gagliano has worked in public radio for over a decade, so the guy knows how to speak, and has ties to  our beloved Pittsburgh.  He attended Pitt for Film Studies, wrote for Pittsburgh City Paper, and the Post Gazette.  After that, Rico moved on to be a reporter for "Marketplace".  His pieces have also been heard on All Things Considered, The Savy Traveler, and Weekend America.  Rico continues to write works for The Wall Street Journal and Dwell Magazine.  Dinner Party Download was created with Rico teamed up with co host Brendan Newnam. These two secretly recorded episodes for their idea late at night at the studio. It later got picked up by American Public Radio, and we are all excited that it did. Rico and Brendan are also releasing their first book "Brunch Is Hell" soon, and I cannot wait to pick up a copy when it releases.  My Marta dream is to team up for a live episode, preferably at The Magic Castle.  ( Yes, I can't stop talking about it) One can dream, my friends, one can dream ;)  Tune in. In "DIY Laser Eye Surgery", painter and video artist Rives Wiley invites viewers to step inside her perception-altering, handmade interpretation of the internet. Sourcing from digital imagery of lens flares, heavily photoshopped sunsets, snapshots of social gatherings and screen-saver graphics, Wiley immerses her viewers into spaces where reality and their virtual counterparts mirror and mimic one another in an endless feedback loop. At turns playful and anxiety-inducing, Wiley prompts viewers to question the nature of virtual reality and the consider whether life is merely reflected in the digital realm, or if the digital dictates us. Wiley's skill in blurring boundaries between the physical and the virtual reaches its apex in her trompe l'oeil installation "DIY Laser Eye Surgery". An homage to the cult of YouTube do-it-yourself culture, Wiley's oil-painted diorama employs one-point perspective, video and sculpture to uncanny ends, creating an unsettlingly real-looking screen in which a disembodied voice cheerfully guides viewers through an absurd tutorial on how to use lasers, a razor blade, food coloring and petroleum jelly in order alter one's vision so as to see in digital effects. Rives Wiley (b. 1990, Alexandria, VA) holds a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (2013). A 2016 Hamiltonian Fellow, her work has been featured in publications including Vice: The Creator's Project, The Huffington Post, Washington City Paper, Dirt DMV, ARte Fuse and Bmore Art. Yes, it's still Marc Hershon and I'm still at the 4th Annual Los Angeles Podcast Festival. Taking up space in the SquareSpace Podcast Lab and interviewing comedians, podcasters, and comedian-podcasters as they breeze through the doorway. I'm releasing each interview as its own "minisode", and this is the sixth in the lineup, which is why it is Episode 116F. And my guest this time around was our guest on a full episode of Succotash back in Epi109 in May: Greg Proops. At this festival, he's guesting on Jackie Kashian's The Dork Forest, performing his own show, and guesting on Dinner Party Download. Known for his tenure on the various incarnations of Whose Line Is It Anyway on TV, Greg is the host of The Smartest Man In The World and the Greg Proops Film Club. He's also recently released his first book, The Smartest Book In The World. And now he's on a jagged world journey — hopping, skipping, and jumping to different countries around the world to promote the book, mostly by doing his podcast in the same locales as well. Greg and I revisit some of the topics we hit on back in May when he was on the show: The challenges of doing improv as a guest performer, keeping an act fresh, staying sane on the road, and more. I'm posting this on Sunday, the last day of the @LAPodfest. I'm not sure who else might sweep through the portals of the Lab, but I'll grab who I can and bring those Succotash Chats to you. Thanks for passing the Succotash! — Marc Hershon
