He touches on a few reasons why he stayed.   LEGACIES AND MANAGEMENT STYLES [7:54] Lifting people up is the one thing he would love his legacy to be. Scott also touches on how he approaches managing his employees; brutal honesty is a good start for him.   DISNEY DAYS [12:20] Despite having been an amazing learning experience, Disney was the wrong culture for Scott and his bull-in-a-china-shop attitude got him spun out. He shares his most valuable lesson coming out of Disney.   BEING AN IMPACTFUL LEADER [15:36] Regulating your emotions is a C-suite competency, not an option: You have to be able to have high-courage conversations where you’re moving outside your comfort zone and do it in a delicate and elegant way. Always hit your forecast if not your goal, Scott is proud to have earned his way into the C-suite.   DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS [28:35] If you can’t summon the courage to call out people on their blind spots, you don’t deserve the leadership role. Scott explains what you can do to improve, and, believe it or not, it starts with practice and separating facts from emotions.   WHAT IS AN EVP OF THOUGHT LEADERSHIP [34:00] Does Scott just sit there and pontificate all day? It really is the new public relations. Scott breaks down what his work entails in practice.   WORK-LIFE BALANCE [37:55] Scott shares his own experience with what he calls seasons rather than continuous balance.   PERSONAL BRANDS [40:27] Scott touches on the delicate balance he has to keep in order to grow his own brand while keeping his fiduciary responsibility to grow the Franklin Covey brand as well. Be very thoughtful about how you are curating your brand, and if you’re an employee of a company, it needs to be congruent with or separate from it.   BEST WORST JOB SCOTT EVER HAD [47:23] Waiting tables! Scott shares exactly what he learned in terms of both customer service and teamwork.   FINAL THOUGHTS [48:40] Don’t confuse being efficient with being effective.   [49:41] Michael thanks Scott for coming on the podcast to share his insight and closes out the podcast with his favorite takeaways.   We hope you learned something today and enjoyed the conversation. Scott Riley shares the fascinating journey of mind, body, and spirit that helped him cure his rheumatoid arthritis and depression. For complete show notes, visit http://youcuredwhat.com/podcast/scott[2:40] Scott provides his background dealing with rheumatoid arthritis. [3:40] Scott tried some immunosuppressant drugs for his autoimmune condition: rheumatoid arthritis. [5:10] Scott found one pharmaceutical drug which helped for about six months. But then it stopped working and this was very discouraging. [5:55] Scott describes his rock bottom point. It was in June 2014: his joint pain made it difficult to open doors, brush his teeth, and to go up and down stairs. [6:50] Scott also started to feel very isolated and withdrawn. [8:40] Scott lacked any hope and had what might be described as suicidal depression. "I certainly did not want to be here." [11:05] After researching people who had success with autoimmune conditions online, Scott came across the documentary Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. In the documentary, the main person Joe Cross, healed from an autoimmune condition by going on a 60-day juice fast. [12:30] Scott decided a 60-day juice fast would be worth trying. He decided to combine the approaches of two juicing documentaries: Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead (by Joe Cross) and Super Juice Me (by Jason Vale). [14:30] Six months out from January 2015, Scott booked a trip to the Peruvian Amazon to be treated by tribes there with plant medicines. [15:30] In the Amazon, Scott was treated with wachuma, ayahuasca, and bobinsana. Scott originally heard about the idea from Aubrey Marcus on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast. [17:45] What was Scott's experience like on the juice fast? [23:45] What were some of the tangible effects of the juice fast that started to show up about four weeks in? [28:00] Between the 60-day juice fast and his trip to Peru, Scott's diet was "clean" and consisted mainly of steamed veggies, chicken, and fish. No refined sugar, processed foods, or added salt. [28:45] What was Scott's first solid food meal after his 60-day fast? [30:45] Booking the trip to Peru was key for Scott in his healing and for him sticking to his juice fast. [31:25] The place Scott went to in Peru is Sprit Quest Sanctuary near Iquitos. [32:45] The treatments (the plant medicines mentioned earlier) have a psychoactive component. [40:30] Scott describes the setup of SpiritQuest Sanctuary at his arrival. [45:20] Scott recommends Michael Pollan's book How to Change Your Mind as a good Western look at psychedelic/psychoactive drugs/medicines. The book describes some of the neuroplasticity that can be achieved by psychedelics. [50:00] Scott describes the start of the Peruvian treatment and the focus placed upon setting intentions. "Whenever you set the intention to actually take the medicine, it begins working." [54:30] This (ayahuasca) was Scott's first experience with psychoactive medicine. [1:00:00] Ayahuasca treatments were every other night at SpiritQuest Sanctuary. [1:04:20] Part of the healing process involved the entire SpiritQuest group (approximately 20 people being treated) getting together and sharing their experiences the morning after ayahuasca treatments. [1:10:00] The ayahuasca portion of treatment was challenging; the wachuma portion was uplifting. Scott had set two intentions in Peru: to help others improve the quality and circumstances of their lives, and to find other likeminded people to connect with. [1:14:30] Scott found out about the Wim Hof Method and took the 10-week course: it took him from a prevention mindset (keep the bad symptoms away) to an optimization mindset (as in, "I'm capable of so much more than I realized"). [1:17:00] Scott became a certified Wim Hof instructor. The Wim Hof Method has 3 pillars: breathwork, cold immersion, and mindset. It helps train your nervous system to go from "fight-or-flight" to "rest-and-digest"; it helps you downregulate from stress. [1:19:30] Joe and Scott discuss some of the science behind the Wim Hof Method (including their ability to be injected with an endotoxin with greatly reduced negative impact compared to a control group). [1:21:40] "Obviously, the control group felt terrible... and of course in the Wim Hof Method group, they were all feeling awesome, loving life, and not suffering from the inflammatory effects of the endotoxin that was injected into them." [1:22:20] "In the 21st century, basically everyone is walking around in a state of chronic stress purely by being born into a world that we haven't really evolved for. And the Wim Hof Method is just a method of training your nervous system how to come out of the stressed state which is basically always switched on by 21st century living." [1:25:15] "It creates a lot of self-belief in people when you can show them that they are can do way more than they think that they're capable of doing. It can be a great tool for helping people to go on and change their life once they can see that they are capable of a lot more." [1:27:10] What does Scott consider the root cause of his healing? [1:28:50] About six months prior to recording, Scott gained more understanding on how to go deeper into simple practices with authenticity every day: good sleep, cold exposure every day, active breathing every day, getting into nature every day. [1:30:30] Through his Causeway Living health coaching company, Scott has recently rolled out a new six-week program (SixWeekShift.com) to help others improve their life quality and circumstances. [1:33:30] Does Scott consider himself cured of rheumatoid arthritis and depression? [1:35:15] Now that Scott has improved his health, what's one thing he enjoys doing that he couldn't do before? [1:38:00] Where can listeners get in touch with Scott? He is available at CausewayLiving.com, twitter.com/CausewayLiving, and instagram.com/CausewayLiving. Also, SixWeekShift.com.

Basically now, as an interviewee, you work on larger problems and solve them as if you are a consultant. You get to work with the people that work on such a problem. Today, the Getting Smart team is speaking with Dr. Scott McLeod, an Associate Professor of Educational Leadership at the University of Colorado Denver. Scott has been in the ed-tech space and an advocate for many years and is widely recognized as one of the nation’s leading experts on technology in learning. Most of his work with schools and leaders across the globe have been focused on transformation for the demands of the 2000s and beyond, as well as how to adapt traditional schooling systems to a global innovation society. Scott is also the Founding Director of the UCEA Center for the Advanced Study of Technology Leadership in Education (CASTLE), which is the only university center focused on future-ready leadership needs and supporting school leaders and systems to do that work (not just teachers in the classroom.)   In today’s podcast, Scott argues for four big shifts that are transforming learning: moving from recall to more complex problem solving, doing authentic work, adding voice and choice to build student agency, and infusing technology in powerful ways. He also describes the work that he did helping schools nationally implement technology, shares his thoughts on leadership and deeper learning, and how technology can help create powerful learning experiences.   Key Takeaways: [:15] About today’s episode. [:49] Tom welcomes Scott to the podcast! [:54] How did Scott become a middle school teacher in Charlotte? [1:12] Where did Scott go to high school? [1:20] When did Scott know he wanted to become a teacher? [1:42] Why did Scott get his Ph.D. at Iowa? [2:35] How has Scott’s law degree given him a unique perspective on the work he does today? [3:24] Why has the shift from print to digital in the last (approx.) 30 years not been the huge transformation in learning Tom once thought it would be? [5:36] Why hasn’t this shift to digital been able to create a new shared vision of learning for teachers? [7:29] Would Scott describe this shift in education as more of a technology integration rather than a transformation? [10:30] Scott describes the work that he did at Iowa (and internationally) to implement technology. [13:02] Scott explains why he wrote his recently published book, Harnessing Technology for Deeper Learning. He also elaborates on what limitations he wanted to address through the book. [16:30] Why is deeper learning taking off? [20:50] What does the 4 Shifts Protocol look like in an elementary lesson? [23:13] How might Scott redesign a secondary Social Studies lesson? [25:47] How would Scott summarize Chapter 6 from his book on mind-shifts teachers need to have. [27:01] Lightning round: Does Scott think these things are overrated or underrated? Augmented reality, automated scoring, adaptive learning, assistive technology, artificial intelligence, and anywhere-anytime learning! [30:35] What is Scott optimistic about right now in education? How to Fix Broken Teams with Scott Carley Broken teams need fixing. Scott Carley is known as The Change Energiser. That's because, he helps fix broken teams. If Scott comes into your life, he'll change it. It's what his friends noted about him. They helped him re-position himself as The Change Energiser. His business is all about changing broken teams. He brings a lot of energy with him. The epithet The Change Energiser has liberated him. Does Scott have a Special Cape? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Scott-Carley-Cape.mp4 What does The Change Energiser do? Scott works with fractured, stalled or broken teams. They have lost their buzz, their mojo. Scott helps them clarify their priorities, to re-energise their broken team work and help them to cast vision. He brings in that change energy to those teams or conferences. Where the team's buzz has flatlined. Why does the buzz go? Teams get beat up. Sales people getting no after no after no. Its like a team shelf life. Team work has a team shelf life. When it loses its active ingredient, it needs pepping up again. Most importantly, this applies to financial advisers, corporate companies. Scott is a Vistage speaker. What is a Fractured Team? A great team is energised and looks forward to meetings. A fractured teams doesn't want to show up. Key players dont turn up to meetings. They aren't working well together. Their purpose is divided. Where do you start to put it right? Scott recommends holding retreats. They can be all day, half day or quarterly. Contact Scott! Scott mentioned a Houston based company. It was growing like topsy. The COO of the firm called in Scott. They were drowning. How could Scott help? He started by making clear what the top team's roles actually were. They didn't know. Their titles mis-represented what they did. Importantly, Scott has the outside voice. Scott can say things from a completely different perspective. That gets their attention. Are Texans American Yorkshireman? http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Are-Yorkshiremen-Like-Texans.mp4   Where do these retreats take place? Out of the office. A hotel with conference room. The key is to do something fun the night before. Golf, murder mystery, treats. He took some fire fighters in charge of pensions skeet shooting. That's clay pigeon shooting to you and me. Scott was able to set the stage. Doing it afterwards gives a chance for people to ask questions after that day. Graham recommends Scott takes his Texas clients to The Dixie Dude Ranch just outside San Antonio. What types of individuals actually fracture teams? So, what kinds of people exist in fractured or broken teams? Drama Queen Darla - never ask her how she's doing. You'll get an earful. Dishonest Dan - if his lips are moving you are NOT getting the full truth. Arrogant Arnold - he is so stuck on himself. Missing Martha - where is she? she's supposed to be here. What'd she call in sick for today? Divisive Dale - he has a way of saying things before you come into the meeting that makes things divisive. Debbie Downer - she's got nothing positive to say. 2 more that the #MeToo movement that have brought to our attention! Miley Cyrus - That would be a distraction. Regardless of what she's wearing, she is a huge distraction. Usually, sexual. What does Scott mean? Surely not...I'd welcome her in my team! :)             Charlie Sheen - you could never sit him beside or across from a woman. How do you address their behaviours? When you establish you have one or more of the characters above, it provides an opportunity to look at the FIVE FRACTURES. A step by step process. Let's say one of your team is a TRASH TALKER. So, maybe there is a character like Drama Queen Darla or Divisive Dale. They are discussing an issue, but not with the person like Missing Martha.

Today we have Scott Pope, founder of In Scope Ventures, back on the Charlotte Angel Connection.  As we learned last week, Scott is working to bring a health care angle to the Charlotte startup scene – not necessarily in the traditional pharmaceutical or the medical device space but in medicine as a business. I attended the first Health Innovators meeting in July 2018 and it was full – standing room only at the back.  There is certainly an interest from people in the medical community to support Scott right now, so it will be exciting to see where this Scott and the community can take things over the next 12 to 24 months. In our discussion today, we covered the following: Why not move to the triangle where he would have great research institutions and systems in place to support the health care initiative? Can Premier be the catalyst in Charlotte that HCA was for the Nashville area? What is the acquisition strategy of Premier right now? Do you have enough community support at this time to help this thing grow, to put a flag down saying Charlotte can be a hub for health care business innovators? Does he have to sell this to UNC Charlotte, Davidson, the Charlotte City Council and players? Can Charlotte attract medical capital at this point in time?  Not necessarily from outside of Charlotte, but within in the Charlotte medical community is there an appetite to invest in these types of companies? Does Scott see himself setting up his own venture fund with a health care focus? How is Scott earning a living while he pushes this effort through the Charlotte community? Can Charlotte attract existing companies in the business of health care to move here and grow? And much more.... Scott’s passion for developing this will take it a long ways.  However, he needs support from the Charlotte community to continue to grow this effort. Stick around next week for our first of two parts with Robert Reddick – long-time member of the Charlotte startup community.  Robert launched his first startup back in 2001 – INTV – which was essentially an online video sharing platform.  They were a little early to the game and then some little know company called YouTube came along a few years later and made waves.  Robert is back with Gatestaff.  He’s early on this one too but I don’t think he’s too early.  Come back to find out what he’s doing and where he is.     William Bissett is an Investment Advisor Representative with Secrest Blakey & Associates, a Registered Investment Adviser.  Opinions expressed on this program do not necessarily reflect those of Secrest Blakey & Associates. My guest today is not your traditional fix and flip guy. He’s not even a wholesaler. Scott Meyers applied his winning real estate investment strategy to self-storage! Which is amazing to think about because many of us have probably never even considered self-storage as an option. But for investing, self-storage is extremely lucrative. And in today’s episode Scott Meyers shares his strategies and how self-storage investment is practically recession proof. Scott did get his start with wholesales, short sales, and rentals, but with the dot-com crash in the late 90s and the housing crashing in the mid-2000s, Scott wanted to try something different. He was sick of taking the risks on the banks and the tenants and knew there had to be a safe way to do what he loved in real estate while minimizing the risk to his investments. He listened to his wife and decided to invest in storage units. He’s developed and purchased over 5000 units, out in the middle of nowhere, all across the country, and now he’s looking to develop and convert existing facilities that are in the need of modernization. There are so many different options for real estate investment that you really can’t go wrong, especially when you put your mind and your heart into something that’s so important to you and your family. MINUTE MARKERS 5:16 - How did Scott get involved in real estate and, really, self-storage investment? 7:45 - Who was one of Scott’s biggest influences in investment? 9:45 - Scott lost his 401K and that was his breaking point 10:40 - Scott proudly quit his part-time job 11:00 - But how did his wife take it? 12:46 - What moved Scott from real estate investing in homes into self-storage? 16:46 - Why does Scott love real estate investing? 18:00 - How is self-storage almost recession proof? 20:18 - Scott’s big profit master investing strategies for self-storage 22:05 - How much interest is on the land compared to the development of self-storage units? 25:00 - Does a mailer list of self-storage units exist out there? 27:13 - The big lessons that got Scott to where he’s at today 30:22 - If he had to start over again, Scott would listen to himself more 35:51 - Scott’s favorite motivational business quotes 36:30 - Scott gives you permission to go find some different friends 39:14 - Scott recommends his favorite book 40:05 - Guess Scott’s dog’s name! 41:19 - Scott’s favorite mobile apps 42:30 - Which app does Scott use every day in his business? 43:14 - Why does Scott wake up at 4:09 every morning? 45:40 - Does Scott get 8 hours of sleep? 46:22 - What is Scott most grateful for? 47:11 - When should we start getting a mentor or coach? 48:50 - Who said ‘hire great people and get out of the way’? 51:00 - A golden nugget of advice from Scott’s favorite mentor 54:05 - What drives Scott to succeed? 55:08 - What does Scott mean when he says “mission-minded business”? 58:38 - Get in touch with Scott at www.selfstorageinvesting.com QUOTES “Cash flow is the name of the game.” Scott “At the end of the day, get a coach, get a mentor, and then listen to what they say.” Scott RESOURCES Scott’s Website: Self Storage Investing The Candlestick Course by Steve Nison Art of the Deal by Donald Trump Rich Dad Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill Good to Great by Jim Collins The E-Myth by Michael Gerber Carleton Sheets Jim Rohn Richard Brannson Uber TVFoodMaps Slack Skype Airmail Infusionsoft Sweet Process Homes of Hope   Ask Cory A Question Want to get in touch with Cory and ask him your most burning Real Estate Investing question?  We’ve made it super easy for you.  Just head over to our Ask Cory A Question page and start recording.  Cory will play your question live on an upcoming show and answer it personally.
