【 What We Talked About】 This episode we dove into Ari Aster's latest film "Eddington"—a movie that'll make you want to throw things at the screen, but also can't stop you from obsessively analyzing every frame. The director behind "Midsommar" and "Hereditary" sets his sights on a fictional small American town during the early pandemic chaos of May 2020, wrapping a horror story about social media tearing communities apart in Western film genre. Joaquin Phoenix's old-school sheriff Joe Cross goes head-to-head with Pedro Pascal's liberal mayor in this tiny New Mexico town, while the real winner turns out to be the faceless tech giant that's been planning to build a data center there all along. We used this deeply polarizing film to unpack everything from how BLM got weaponized on social media, to the toxic rules of cancel culture, to how conspiracy theories spread like wildfire through small-town neighbor networks. The ending is both alarming and defeatist: while everyone was busy fighting online, the real crisis—AI and Big Tech—had already quietly taken over. 【Support Us】 If you like our show and want to support us, please consider the following: Join our membership program: https://theamericanroulette.com/paid-membership/ Support us on Patreon: www.patreon.com/americanroulette Business Inquiries and fan mail: american.roulette.pod@gmail.com 【Timeline】 01:12 - Vibe Shift: Zeitgeist transformation from pandemic to now 03:44 - Film plot overview: Political showdown in a New Mexico town 07:57 - Did Ari Aster put his thumb on the scale in the fight between the sheriff and the mayor 16:57 - The social media-ization of BLM and commodification of "good trouble" 23:34 - How social media rules make everyone look bad 35:36 - How trauma becomes currency in the discourse 40:07 - Xiao Lan's "fake news field research" 46:31 - The film's nihilistic ending 49:31 - "SolidGoldMagikarp" Easter egg 52:18 - Real impact of AI data centers on American small towns 59:24 - Do artists have the right to create "cruel" art? 1:11:12 - Real social issues plaiguing today's America in "Eddington" 【Who We Are】 The American Roulette is a podcast dedicated to helping the Chinese-speaking community understand fast-changing U.S. politics. We're selling out ONCE AGAIN with Ari Aster's controversial neo-western thriller black comedy EDDINGTON, starring Joaquin Phoenix as sheriff Joe Cross, who runs for mayor against Pedro Pascal's Ted Garcia in a small New Mexico town during the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic. It's sometimes uncomfortable, occasionally hilarious, and has some real bite - though some audiences didn't know what to make of it. On this episode we go through some recent watches, discuss the Ari Aster films we've seen so far, and then have the DEFINITIVE conversation about EDDINGTON (with some warning before any spoiler talk). Enjoy! The post Episode 288 – Cinema Smorgasbord Sells Out – Eddington (2025) first appeared on Cinema Smorgasbord.

The film follows Joaquin Phoenix as Joe Cross, the sheriff of Eddington, NM who - frustrated by the state's mask mandates in early 2020 - decides to run for mayor to depose the incumbent Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal), a boilerplate liberal looking to move the town into the future by granting subsidies to a tech company attempting to build a data center at the edge of town. The film also traces the various conflicts that erupts as the era's wave of Black Lives Matter protests (following the murder of George Floyd) run up against the sheriff's department and the competing ideologies of the townsfolk, all emboldened by the hypermediated, isolated existences that defined the pandemic. We beging by addressing the film's politics, rejecting criticisms of the film as "centrist" or evincing a "both sides are bad" mentality, instead revealing the fundamental retreat of material politics as the defining order of the 2020s. Then, we discuss the film as western, how it embraces the lineage of John Ford, and how its world of localized, independent vacuums of internet-fed ideology suggest a collapse of the dialectic. Finally, we look at what the movie has to say about Big Tech, the victims of capitalism, and its (quite cynical) read on where America all headed.Read Alex on Eddington at More Like Shit StackRead Ed Berger on Eddington at Reciprocal Contradicton 2.0....Our theme song is "Mirror" by Chris Fish
Film Overview Title: Eddington (2025) by Ari Aster Setting: Small-town New Mexico during the COVID-19 pandemic Premise: Tension and division between a local sheriff (Joaquin Phoenix) and the town's mayor (Pedro Pascal), reflecting broader cultural and social fractures in America. Themes: Polarization, the influence of social media, performative activism, the corporatization of crisis, and the psychological weight of 2020. Cast & Performances Joaquin Phoenix (Sheriff Joe Cross): Widely praised for his layered, committed performance. Considered perfect for the role. Pedro Pascal (Mayor Ted Garcia): Serves as a foil to Phoenix's sheriff. Also well-cast, though not a co-lead. Emma Stone: Mixed feelings about her casting due to age and tone. Some discussion of alternative casting. Austin Butler: Divisive but ultimately defended. His character is seen as representative of evangelical or conspiracy-driven youth. A recurring homeless man character is discussed as a possible metaphor for society's ignored truths or the prophetic outsider. Cinematography & Technical Merits Director of Photography: Darius Khondji (corrected after initially being misattributed to Bruno Delbonnel) Visuals praised as among the best of the year—shot in New Mexico using real locations, lighting used to evoke horror pacing and psychological tension. Stylistic comparisons to Hereditary and Seven. Return of Ari Aster's visual motifs: isolation, daylight-to-night transitions, and symbolic elevation (e.g., houses on hills). Genre & Stylistic Notes Described as: “Not quite a horror film, but horror-influenced” A blend of satire, tragedy, psychological thriller, dark comedy, and drama Compared to: No Country for Old Men (tone and landscape) Robert Altman's Nashville (ensemble structure and social chaos) King of Comedy and Taxi Driver (Scorsese comparisons in the spoiler section) Rejection of Coen Brothers comparisons as too simplistic Thematic Analysis (Spoiler Section) Fragmentation of Reality: The main theme is how social media algorithms and performative digital culture drive people apart. Bothsides-ism: The film avoids heroes or villains; it's more about the system manipulating everyone. Performative Activism: Especially embodied in the youth protest scenes—young people react to national injustices despite their local irrelevance. Corporate Exploitation: A data center being built in the town is the real power move while townsfolk are distracted by culture wars. The Sheriff as a Symbol: Joe Cross embodies both traditional authority and the poisoned populism of social media-age politics. Final Acts of Violence: Symbolize collapse under social pressure and loss of moral compass. ⭐️ Ratings Michael: 4 out of 5 stars – “Bold, sharp, close to perfect…” Dave: 4 out of 5 stars – “Difficult but essential viewing… very funny, deeply human…”
Ian and Jeff visit the not-so-sleepy little town of Eddington for a spoilerific look back at 2020, through the cracked lens of indie genre giant Ari Aster!Joaquin Phoenix stars as sheriff Joe Cross, whose crumbling marriage and personal beef with Eddington's mayor, Ted Garcia (Pedro Pascal) is already enough to put him off kilter. In sweeps the COVID-19 pandemic, followed by BLM protests, and Antifa saboteurs--all of which push him and the town to the brink of absolute insanity. In this no holds barred review, the guys tackle Eddington's lows, highs, and in-betweens--and ask if Aster is all he's cracked up to be as a storyteller. They also draw strange but apt parallels to James Gunn's Superman and recommend some of the sources Aster knowingly or unknowingly cribbed from as alternatives to sitting through two-and-a-half-hours of "juvenhilism" (a word that Ian mistakenly believed he'd coined--but which is actually the title of a book. Womp, womp).Subscribe, like, and comment on Kicking the Seat here on YouTube, and check us out at:kickseat.comXLetterboxdBlueSkyInstagramFacebookShow LinksWatch the Eddington (2025) trailer. For reference, check out Earth's Mightiest Critics' roundtable review of Superman 2025.Keep up with Jeff York's criticism and caricatures at The Establishing Shot and Pipeline Artists.

I'm a wife and mom of 2. These last couple years I have been on the ride of my life - adjusting my diet, habits, mindset, and views surrounding health and happiness. After the birth of my daughter in 2020 I experienced severe PPD and a slew of other health conditions including inflammation, heart palpatations, excema, depression, anxiety, autoimmune issues, and more. This was exacerbated by isolation and fear during the pandemic. Additionally, I had been over 200 lbs since childhood and never found anything that worked for me. Searching for answers I stumbled upon the movie Fat Sick and Nearly Dead where I learned about Joe Cross and how he healed himself drinking nothing but fresh juice. Since then my life has never been the same. I joined online communities. Watched testimonies. Made new friends. Saved up for a juicer and began my journey. I juiced for 266 days straight. This experience empowered me to take a look into my own life and cultivate gratitude, health, and happiness. It reminded me of the importance of community and connection. It helped me lose over 100 lbs and find my purpose. I landed a mindset coach job in the wfpb world. I was interviewed by Joe Cross. I got an affiliation with my favorite juicer brand!! My life transformed and I began feeling liberated and empowered. Today I share about my experiences online to inspire others and spread hope. I left my corporate job and now I support and uplift other women looking for change. Those longing for community, connection, and growth. Those wanting to lose weight, beat emotional eating, instill new healthy habits, improve self esteem, move toward a plant based diet, or simply build up their self care toolbox. As moms, we often put ourselves on the backburner, but we deserve care too. We deserve love, health, and happiness. Only when we care for ourselves can we shine our brightest light and truly be of service to the world.

Erin Porter, author of Eat Pray Get Well - A journey from Chronic Illness & Brokenness to Wholeness & Healing, has been interviewed on ABC, CBS, NBC, PBS American Health Journal, CTN, Know the Cause and more. At eighteen years old, and after an abusive childhood, she was desperate to leave her parents house and moved to New York City. Instead of embarking on a new journey of exploring the big city, she was running from doctor to doctor trying to figure out what was single handedly trying to steal her health (and my finances) out from under me since the move. This marked the beginning of a 20 plus year descent into chronic illness. She developed tunnel vision, her thoughts were consumed with trying to unravel the cause of her failing health. She spent enormous amounts of tears, frustration, and money trying to get well. Upon research and becoming her own best health advocate, she did ultimately get well but it was a long journey. She discovered a steady companion in the process: God. The second edition of her book Eat Pray Get Well - A Journey from Chronic Illness & Brokenness to Wholeness & Healing was recently released. Erin interviewed people who also turned to God desperate to get well and find answers. Interviews include supermodel Carol Alt, Joe Cross - star and film maker of Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead, renowned cardiologist Stephen Sinatra, Doug Kaufmann - host of televisions Know The Cause, and more. Out artist NIKO premieres his new single, "2 Hearts," and talks about his music career. Fusing a European sensibility with an international background, NIKO is an openly gay pop artist who brings a sensual take to Synth Pop, striving for a textural experience through clarity of sound and intensity of voice. From intimacy to escapism, fame to club culture, NIKO showcases a multifaceted persona through his own writing and production as he navigates through different thematics, inspirations and emotions. Growing up in Milan, NIKO was naturally drawn to the city's fashion and nightlife scene, where his earliest musical endeavors began as creative collaborations with underground DJs as a songwriter and vocalist. He later set his sights on New York, which he credits for broadening his cultural perspective, inspiring greater depth in music diversity and where his debut single “2 HEARTS” was recorded. It's about the moment when you let go of your fears and open yourself to love, embracing your emotions and “synchronizing” to another person's heartbeat.”
