Send us a textThis episode invites listeners to rediscover the comfort found in the hymn "Be Still, My Soul." Through personal stories and deep discussions, we explore the hymn's message about trusting God in life's uncertainties and the importance of remembering to preach the gospel to ourselves everyday. We look at the power of personal stories in our faith journeys. We discuss musical prosody and the intertwining of the music and lyrics of this hymn that produce such an emotional response for the listener.  And we connect scripture to the hymn's messages of trust and peace pointing us back to the power of the Gospel in our everyday lives.SHOW LINKS:Learn more about The Offering Project and check out all the artists involved in making this project come to life by going to www.offering.orgBE STILL, MY SOUL performed by Tami Neilson and Don McGlashan from the album Offering by The Offering Project ℗ 2019 Thom Music / The Offering ProjectWhen I Survey the Wondrous Cross - background piano for listener's story provided by The Hymnal Project Piano Only (Lent + Holy Week)Support our podcast by becoming a monthly subscriber.Get some Bright Forever swag by shopping at our new store by clicking here.Support the show www.thebrightforever.comAll songs used by permission.

Indie-pop star Benee and reggae band L.A.B. are among the top five finalists for New Zealand's top songwriting honour.Songs written and performed by Reb Fountain, Nadia Reid, and Troy Kingi round out the list of finalists this year for the coveted APRA Silver Scroll award. APRA voters narrowed down the five tracks from a list of 20 songs, a tough job considering the strength of Kiwi songwriting talent. The rise of pop superstar Benee gains additional momentum with her top five honour for Glitter, having achieved a back-to-back nomination with her nod for Soaked last year. She penned both songs with the same co-writers, Djeisan Suskov and Joshua Fountain. The 20-year-old is going from strength to strength following appearances on US talk shows Ellen and The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon in recent months.Likewise, the honour adds to a massive year for reggae band L.A.B. The Scroll-finalist track In The Air became the first song from an independent artist to top the NZ singles chart since 2012. In The Air spent three weeks in the top chart spot.Folk noir artist Reb Fountain is a Silver Scroll finalist for her song Don't You Know Who I Am. Photo / SuppliedNadia Reid and Troy Kingi both make the top five for the second time. Reid is up for her raw and emotional track Get The Devil Out, and Kingi for Mighty Invader. My guest today is Hollie Smith.   Hollie Smith is one of New Zealand's most predominant & iconic musicians. After working with numerous bands including Trinity Roots, Fat Freddy's Drop and Detroit dance legend Recloose, she was approached by NZ songwriting royalty Don McGlashan to perform on a movie soundtrack single ‘Bathe in The River' that topped the New Zealand singles charts and became one of the biggest and iconic singles in New Zealand history.   This set the stage for Hollie's debut album ‘Long Player' released in 2007 which went straight to number one on the NZ charts. The album reached multi-platinum status, and was followed with sold out tours and then saw her take away several NZ music awards that year which included ‘Best Producer', ‘Best Female Solo Artist' and ‘Breakthrough artist of the year'.   Hollie has gone on to record 2 more solo albums, "Humour and the Misfortune of Others", and "Water or Gold". And she's has recently begun production on a long awaited new album.    Hollie Smith is a prolific hardworking singer/songwriter and performer, and has always maintained a highly respected reputation of creating music with the upmost integrity & passion, not to mention her incredible live performances and powerhouse vocals.   Im extremely honoured to have gotten to sit and chat with Hollie for this podcast. So ladies and gentleman, please sit back and open your ears to some of the life and times of Hollie Smith.   This podcast episdoe was recorded 08/07/2020.   Intro Music: "Lady Dee" - Hollie Smith (Water or Gold) Outro Music: "Philosophy" - Hollie Smith (Long Player)   For more on Hollie: Facebook Instagram Website  ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------   Click here to securely donate to The Gig Life Podcast via PayPal.   Your support is very much appreciated. In which content-hungry fangirls Kylie Klein-Nixon and Emily Brookes discuss the almost entirely delightful covid-19 phenomenon of candid celebrity videos - not commissioned, not paid, not sponcon - just famous people being themselves and bringing a little joy to the world. * Have you ever imagined what it would be like if one of your favourite musicians played a private concert just for you? Or one of the best shows of all time reunited and sent you a special one-off episode? Or an actor you adore and no you don't have daddy issues made you a negroni? Kylie and Emily don't have to, because all of that and more has happened to them in the last few weeks! Of course, this stuff didn't exactly happen only to us. Thousands tuned in to watch Don McGlashan play his two ANZAC Day gigs on Facebook Live, while Stanley Tucci's video of himself making a cocktail (for, we admit, his wife) has clocked up over 800,000 views on Instagram, but there's something about the intimacy of celebrities just doing something they love in their homes, and pinging it straight into our homes, that we really love. Florence Pugh cooks! The Goonies and Outrageous Fortune reunite! John Krasinski has an ugly globe! These guys are getting lockdown celebrity content so, so right and we're here to talk about it. Not everyone is, though (ahem Gal Gadot ahem) - we're talking about that too. Join us to find out which celebrity's house we most want to move into, which celebrity's family we most want to be adopted into, and which celebrity we deem “New Zealand's favourite uncle.” * Don McGlashan - he of Blam Blam Blam The Front Lawn, The Mutton Birds, and our hearts - performed two Facebook Live concerts in honour of ANZAC Day. He played again today, and will performa agin on Sunday morning at 7am. Stanley Tucci wants to make you a negroni. And, in her stories highlights, Florence Pugh wants to teach you how to cook some simple and tasty food. John Krasinski has some good news for you. Sam Neill is a national treasure. And Dita von Teese has one hell of a house. Finally, if you really must… Here's Gal Gadot and a bunch of other celebrities being totally tone-deaf, in every way imaginable. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/off-script-nz/message

London is synonymous with music and it's been the place where some of New Zealand's best musicians have produced their greatest work. Singer songwriter Jesse Will moved to London from Auckland in 2013 and is on the same path Don McGlashan and Neil Finn went before him. We met up in an East London park in a chilly July and talked music, werewolf Michael Jackson, and akward metaphors... mostly mine. Ok, entirely mine.

But there is still the messages of importance that is a key signature of Moana's work. I spoke with Michael Bennett who directed a wonderful New Zealand film called Matariki, it had its world premiere at Toronto Film Festival which is HUGE! Michael’s background is in writing/directing in TV an short films so having his first feature debut over in Canada is really exiciting. The flick stars some notable Kiwi personalities as well as Don McGlashan as musical director and composer so Matariki showcases New Zealand music, actors (both established and up and coming) as well culture. Have a listen to Michael talk about the process of making Matariki and check out the trailer. Matariki is showing at Rialto Cinema in Christchurch from Dec 9th - that’s tomorrow!
