Justin's got an awesome story to tell—from chef to fly fishing guide to running the lodge. We find out how they won the Orvis Fly Fishing Lodge of the Year and how Orvis has supported them along the way. We explore the river's stunning five sections, each stretchin' about 12 miles. We dive into the wild world of Yellowstone cutthroat and those rowdy rainbows, causing a stir in Idaho with bounties on their heads! We've got the lowdown on the Salmon fly, Goldenstone, and Caddis fly hatches—nature's showtime! Justin also shares valuable tips for all the DIY anglers out there and discusses the importance of river etiquette. Plus, a crazy story involving Dick Cheney's bodyguards and a sketchy civilian that came so close to a river shootout! Show Notes with Justin Hays on Lodge At Palisades Creek 03:00 - Justin tells the story of how he transitioned from being a chef to being a fly fishing guide to managing a lodge. 06:50 - Justin talks about how partnering with Orvis has provided so much support to them in every aspect along the way. 08:20 - We talk about Yellowstone cutthroat decreasing in numbers and the rainbows increasing, almost being considered invasive. As a result, the Idaho Fishing Game made it legal to catch and kill rainbows, making it a controversial topic in Idaho. IFG even put a bounty on rainbows. 12:50 - We are coming to the Southfork in Fall for Euro Nymphing School with Pete Erickson. 20:20 - We had an episode about the Henry's Fork Foundation with Brandon Hoffner at WFS 414. 23:15 - Trivia: Henry's Fork was originally called the North Fork. 27:40 - They divide the river into 5 sections. And then they have some Dunns as September progresses. 41:50 - "The trick to the Salmon fly thing is throwing a large dry fly on 2x underneath a bush or a tree and twitching out and try to mimic the real lifecycle of an adult Salmonfly...", Justin explains in detail. 46:20 - Perdigons has been a game-changer for them in the last 2 years. 48:20 - Caddis fly hatch starts in mid-October. 48:55 - Pro tip for DIY anglers: "This river empties at 5 pm. Damian is back, Pete's here, and they bring on the most special guest co-host, Pete's very own son: Theo “Ted” Dunn! No time to listen to the LAST SHOW OF 2021?  Here's a preview of what happened and when: Show Notes: SPECIAL NEWS ALERT: FEDERAL STUDENT LOANS PAUSE EXTENSION: [5:55] On December 12, 2021, President Biden extended the pause on federal student loans until May 1, 2022. Payments had been set to restart on February 1, 2022. Approximately 41 million individuals had their loans put into administrative forbearance as part of the CARES Act nearly 2 years ago effectively removing the requirement that they make monthly payments to the government. The deadline has been extended by both Presidents Trump and Biden. Borrowers will continue to have the option of not making any student loan payments due on their federal student loans, though they can resume making payments at any time. Any payments made during this pause will be applied against the principal of the loan as interest has been paused during this time, as well. PETE: I am surprised, but not shocked. DAMIAN: People are appreciative, but upset about this news. The conversation was previously about forgiving (some) of the Student Loan debt. PETE: The perfect time to restart this, politics aside, is actually now. DAMIAN: There may be a tax return coming in around that time, to possibly help ease the transition back into payments.   THREE SMART MONEY MOVES: [22:30] Let's begin with Employee Benefits. Instead of waiting until open enrollment, get into your portal and ask yourself the critical question: “Am I okay with this current path?” DAMIAN: Maybe it's looking at any new changes to the benefits from over the year(s). Minor changes to health plans, or retirement accounts, are all to be considered. PETE: Ah, the annual rebalance. This is a good time of year to take a look at what's happening across the entire financial landscape of your life. DAMIAN: Look to see if there is an automatic rebalance option. Second money move: Conduct a household financial meeting DAMIAN: Use this time (even 30 minutes) to do a household finance S.W.O.T analysis and set some financial goals for the new year Third money move: Look at your checking account more critically. How could you improve the flow of your money? What patterns do you see? DAMIAN: We're not talking about huge changes, but remember that small changes can lead to big differences over time.   We only show a few previews here, but don't stop you from enjoying the whole show. Whew! No time to listen?  Here's a preview of what happened and when: Show Notes: MAILBAG QUESTION #1: [5:05] “Dear Pete, I heard colleagues talking about discretionary spending this week. It got me thinking about how much money I allow myself to spend in any given month. I typically give myself some cushion for dinning out and a random purchase here or there. Beyond that, I tend to keep a pretty low balance in my checking account because I tend to spend more responsibly if I limit the amount of money I have access to. How do you think about discretionary spending? DAMIAN: Discretionary spending is actually planned, you just don't know what you're spending it on yet. DAMIAN: It's quite variable, so don't compare yourself to other families in this category PETE: You're giving yourself an allowance; what you spend it on is what's discretionary. It took an ugly turn when online banking came out. The debit card makes spending all too easy. PETE: You have to find a way that works for you. You don't need to keep boatloads of money in your checking account.   The Dunns cover so much more in the full show! No time to listen?  Here's a preview of what happened and when: Show Notes: MAILBAG QUESTION #1: [2:07] “Hey Pete, honest question: given recent content around inflation and changing conventional knowledge about drawdown rates… My wife and I generally set aside $50,000 – $60,000 annually for retirement, including employer matches. We have 25-30 years until retirement and our savings is about $430,000. We max out one 401(k), we're also funding two 529s and making weekly contributions into brokerage accounts. We have a very aggressive risk tolerance, but assume conservative returns for long-term planning. Despite all of this, most retirement calculators have us coming up short because they assume we'll need 75%-80% of our current income in retirement. Our income is slightly variable based on annual bonus potential and whatnot. But shouldn't we reduce the amount of annual retirement income we'll need by what we're currently saving? At the point of retirement, we'll be drawing down our balance rather than actively contributing so it seems that it should be reflected in the assumed need… PETE: I major beef with retirement calculators. Do they assume people won't reduce their expenses at all? DAMIAN: Most people don't want to live on less in retirement. Hopefully your health will be in good condition, and you may end up spending more with the extra time on your hands. PETE: Most people accumulate priorities without shedding priorities DAMIAN: That can be an absolute retirement plan killer.   WILL YOU NEED THAT MUCH?:  [13:50] Let's look at the Ideal Budget and play a game. Do you think you will need more or less of the following expenses in retirement?: HOUSING (25%) of your income: Damian – Less. Pete – Less TRANSPORTATION (15%): Damian – Maybe a push. Pete – Less FOOD (12%): Damian – Less. Pete – Maybe about the same. Sunday Fireside PresentsEVELINE by James JoyceShe sat at the window watching the evening invade the avenue. Her head was leaned against the window curtains and in her nostrils was the odour of dusty cretonne. She was tired. Few people passed. The man out of the last house passed on his way home; she heard his footsteps clacking along the concrete pavement and afterwards crunching on the cinder path before the new red houses. One time there used to be a field there in which they used to play every evening with other people's children. Then a man from Belfast bought the field and built houses in it—not like their little brown houses but bright brick houses with shining roofs. The children of the avenue used to play together in that field—the Devines, the Waters, the Dunns, little Keogh the cripple, she and her brothers and sisters. Ernest, however, never played: he was too grown up. Her father used often to hunt them in out of the field with his blackthorn stick; but usually little Keogh used to keep nix and call out when he saw her father coming. Still they seemed to have been rather happy then. Her father was not so bad then; and besides, her mother was alive. That was a long time ago; she and her brothers and sisters were all grown up; her mother was dead. Tizzie Dunn was dead, too, and the Waters had gone back to England. Everything changes. Now she was going to go away like the others, to leave her home. Home! She looked round the room, reviewing all its familiar objects which she had dusted once a week for so many years, wondering where on earth all the dust came from. Perhaps she would never see again those familiar objects from which she had never dreamed of being divided. And yet during all those years she had never found out the name of the priest whose yellowing photograph hung on the wall above the broken harmonium beside the coloured print of the promises made to Blessed Margaret Mary Alacoque. He had been a school friend of her father. Whenever he showed the photograph to a visitor her father used to pass it with a casual word: “He is in Melbourne now.” She had consented to go away, to leave her home. Was that wise? She tried to weigh each side of the question. In her home anyway she had shelter and food; she had those whom she had known all her life about her. Of course she had to work hard, both in the house and at business. What would they say of her in the Stores when they found out that she had run away with a fellow? Say she was a fool, perhaps; and her place would be filled up by advertisement. Miss Gavan would be glad. She had always had an edge on her, especially whenever there were people listening.   “Miss Hill, don't you see these ladies are waiting?” “Look lively, Miss Hill, please.” She would not cry many tears at leaving the Stores. But in her new home, in a distant unknown country, it would not be like that. Then she would be married—she, Eveline. People would treat her with respect then. She would not be treated as her mother had been. Even now, though she was over nineteen, she sometimes felt herself in danger of her father's violence. She knew it was that that had given her the palpitations. When they were growing up he had never gone for her like he used to go for Harry and Ernest, because she was a girl; but latterly he had begun to threaten her and say what he would do to her only for her dead mother's sake. And now she had nobody to protect her. Ernest was dead and Harry, who was in the church decorating business, was nearly always down somewhere in the country. Besides, the invariable squabble for money on Saturday nights had begun to weary her unspeakably. She always gave her entire wages—seven shillings—and Harry always sent up what he could but the trouble was to get any money from her father. He said she used to squander the money, that she had no head, that he wasn't going to give her his hard-earned money to throw about the streets, and much more, for he was usually fairly bad of a Saturday night. In the end he would give her the money and ask her had she any intention of buying Sunday's dinner. Then she had to rush out as quickly as she could and do her marketing, holding her black leather purse tightly in her hand as she elbowed her way through the crowds and returning home late under her load of provisions. She had hard work to keep the house together and to see that the two young children who had been left to her charge went to school regularly and got their meals regularly. It was hard work—a hard life—but now that she was about to leave it she did not find it a wholly undesirable life. She was about to explore another life with Frank. Frank was very kind, manly, open-hearted. She was to go away with him by the night-boat to be his wife and to live with him in Buenos Ayres where he had a home waiting for her. How well she remembered the first time she had seen him; he was lodging in a house on the main road where she used to visit. It seemed a few weeks ago. He was standing at the gate, his peaked cap pushed back on his head and his hair tumbled forward over a face of bronze. Then they had come to know each other. He used to meet her outside the Stores every evening and see her home. He took her to see The Bohemian Girl and she felt elated as she sat in an unaccustomed part of the theatre with him. He was awfully fond of music and sang a little. People knew that they were courting and, when he sang about the lass that loves a sailor, she always felt pleasantly confused. He used to call her Poppens out of fun. First of all it had been an excitement for her to have a fellow and then she had begun to like him. He had tales of distant countries. He had started as a deck boy at a pound a month on a ship of the Allan Line going out to Canada. He told her the names of the ships he had been on and the names of the different services. He had sailed through the Straits of Magellan and he told her stories of the terrible Patagonians. He had fallen on his feet in Buenos Ayres, he said, and had come over to the old country just for a holiday. Of course, her father had found out the affair and had forbidden her to have anything to say to him. “I know these sailor chaps,” he said. One day he had quarrelled with Frank and after that she had to meet her lover secretly. The evening deepened in the avenue. The white of two letters in her lap grew indistinct. One was to Harry; the other was to her father. Ernest had been her favourite but she liked Harry too. Her father was becoming old lately, she noticed; he would miss her. Sometimes he could be very nice. Not long before, when she had been laid up for a day, he had read her out a ghost story and made toast for her at the fire. Another day, when their mother was alive, they had all gone for a picnic to the Hill of Howth. She remembered her father putting on her mother's bonnet to make the children laugh. Her time was running out but she continued to sit by the window, leaning her head against the window curtain, inhaling the odour of dusty cretonne. Down far in the avenue she could hear a street organ playing. She knew the air. Strange that it should come that very night to remind her of the promise to her mother, her promise to keep the home together as long as she could. She remembered the last night of her mother's illness; she was again in the close dark room at the other side of the hall and outside she heard a melancholy air of Italy. The organ-player had been ordered to go away and given sixpence. She remembered her father strutting back into the sickroom saying: “Damned Italians! coming over here!” As she mused the pitiful vision of her mother's life laid its spell on the very quick of her being—that life of commonplace sacrifices closing in final craziness. She trembled as she heard again her mother's voice saying constantly with foolish insistence: “Derevaun Seraun! Derevaun Seraun!” She stood up in a sudden impulse of terror. Escape! She must escape! Frank would save her. He would give her life, perhaps love, too. But she wanted to live. Why should she be unhappy? She had a right to happiness. Frank would take her in his arms, fold her in his arms. He would save her. She stood among the swaying crowd in the station at the North Wall. He held her hand and she knew that he was speaking to her, saying something about the passage over and over again. The station was full of soldiers with brown baggages. Through the wide doors of the sheds she caught a glimpse of the black mass of the boat, lying in beside the quay wall, with illumined portholes. She answered nothing. She felt her cheek pale and cold and, out of a maze of distress, she prayed to God to direct her, to show her what was her duty. The boat blew a long mournful whistle into the mist. If she went, tomorrow she would be on the sea with Frank, steaming towards Buenos Ayres. Their passage had been booked. Could she still draw back after all he had done for her? Her distress awoke a nausea in her body and she kept moving her lips in silent fervent prayer. A bell clanged upon her heart. She felt him seize her hand: “Come!” All the seas of the world tumbled about her heart. He was drawing her into them: he would drown her. She gripped with both hands at the iron railing. “Come!” No! No! No! It was impossible. Her hands clutched the iron in frenzy. Amid the seas she sent a cry of anguish! “Eveline! Evvy!” He rushed beyond the barrier and called to her to follow. He was shouted at to go on but he still called to her. She set her white face to him, passive, like a helpless animal. Her eyes gave him no sign of love or farewell or recognition.

Billionaire lifestyle with Emmitt Muckles - Conversations with conscious entrepreneurs, solopreneurs and life changers

[caption id="attachment_1277" align="aligncenter" width="300"] The World is Yours![/caption] Poor to Abundance - How To Make America Great. We have a newly elected President of the United States, in Donald Trump. The platform he ran on was "Make America Great again".  In the minds of many American, making America great entails the creation of jobs across the country. Many individuals think this is a lofty promise, with those position of jobs largely dependent upon manufacturing. I think it's time we change our mode of thinking and become independent of the government process for greatness.  Terry R. Robinson has the springboard for boosting the mindset change of Americans to make their lives great. Terry Robinson - Piss poor to abundance Terry Robinson has always had a knack for numbers. As Terry stated during our interview "I was counting in my mother's womb.  Terry has a lesson for everyone on multiple levels within her writing. Education is the key to understanding while being aware many of us are ignorant to many ways of business. Our ignorance stems from our middle-class worker education and mentality. Once upon a time in the world, an individual could raise a family and live a very comfortable life with a high school education. Those times seem to have passed us by, never to return.   All Is Not Lost Miss Robinson, being a native Chicagoan and after having graduated from DePaul University, She set her sites on the corporate world. Several years into her working career, a change of mindset began to brew.  Revisiting some very deep social and family trauma from her childhood drove deep soul searching. The result was acquiring a job away from Chicago in Sunny Florida where things began to click and make sense. Here are a Few Points how to move towards financial abundance. Don't Hustle Backwards Many people figure the right education in the field will land them the perfect job.  From Terry's point of view, this is Hustling backward.  You can only make as much as someone is willing to pay when working for someone else. Finding your niche to generate income and happiness is the key to abundance. Look outside your box. Sometimes you have to look away from your circumstances or remove yourself from the environment to get a better perspective. We become and set our standards to the environment we inhabit. Often a sampling of a totally different experience will help you to grow exponentially. The experience most likely will be very uncomfortable. The long-term gains will outweigh the discomfort. Business owner, not an employee unless you employ yourself. The wealthy of this and most countries are derived from owners, not employees. Look for opportunities aligning with your talents and passion for creating wealth under your terms.  Don't be afraid to ask questions, and take some risk.  Change your mindset to an owner and problem solver, as being a business owner will create freedoms few of your peers can appreciate or afford. Create an independent financial machine, go from Piss Poor to Abundance. Creating a legal company is far easier than you think.  When a business is started by an individual, the company has many financial rights as an individual. Here are few quick perks: Independent financial legal status Independent Financial status Able to secure greater lines of credit It is easy with the internet for someone to research terms such as. Dunns and Bradstreet score LLC LLP S-corp Sole Proprietor Venture capital Build to sell Asset protection Business credit identity The right and founding principle of America is to Own you Own. The very reason many individuals flock to America is to be a business person or work for themselves.  Somehow we have forgotten the basics. Terry detail how her slow third level education came when she found herself working very long hours and not having the capital gains to show. Additionally, Terry saw the first hand the people with the most wealth owned businesses. From her knowledge and observation Piss Poor to Abundance was born. Now go Live The Billionaire LifeStyle

Wizard of Ads
Counterintuitive Radio

Wizard of Ads

Play Episode Listen Later May 10, 2010 4:45

“The best radio ads entertain the public and generate favorable comments.” That kind of thinking is why most radio ads don't work as well as they should. I know it's counterintuitive and disconcerting but the ads we hate often work better than the ads we love. What are you trying to make happen with your radio ads? Have you been confusing compliments with results? You're probably dismayed by what I'm saying right now. Bear with me. I'm betting you'll find a nugget you can use. Here are some concepts to ponder: (1.) Strange voices: Voices that belong on the radio are easy to ignore. Voices that don't belong on the radio usually sell more product. Unpolished, amateur voices are hard to ignore. This is why they generate such hot complaints. (2.) Awkward phrasing: “Smooth ads” are built from worn-out phrases that are likewise easy to ignore. Effective ads often feature broken sentences. Half sentences. Non-sequiturs. This is how we speak, but it's rarely how we write. Our brains know how to assemble bits and pieces of verbalized thoughts so that they make sense in our minds. Awkward wording and weird phrases capture attention. But we rarely use these when we write radio ads. (3.) No music: Music beds “sound good” because they help blur the ads into the format.  This makes the ads – you guessed it – easier to ignore. (4.) No humor: Humor is like nitroglycerine. Handle it carefully and you can move mountains with it. Handle it carelessly and you'll blow your listener's attention completely away from your message; they'll remember your humor but not your advertiser.  Here's the rule: When the humor is directly linked to the product and its purpose, you're in the mountain moving business. But when your humor is only tangentially connected to the product, resist the temptation to include it in the ad. Tangential humor will get you lots of compliments but limited results. Please understand I'm NOT saying irritating ads always work. Sometimes a radio ad is irritating because it's badly written, poorly produced and pointless. But these are rare. Far more common are ads that are badly written, extremely well produced and pointless. But occasionally you'll hear an ad that doesn't sound like an ad at all. The person on the radio sounds real, says real things and is believable. Jim Dunn's accent is difficult to penetrate because he spent his formative years in Boston. Remember Cliff Clavin on Cheers? Jim the construction worker has a much thicker Boston accent than Cliffie the postman and Jim's jewelry store is in sunny Florida. Earlier this year, Jim bought some radio time and simply told the truth: JIM: What was I thinking? Opening a second location made sense at the time, I just can't remember why. Originally, I opened J.R. Dunn Jewelers in Lighthouse Point so that Ann Marie, Sean and I could work together as a family. Opening that second location on Las Olas meant us working apart.  The store was a success but it was also a huge burden.  There are things in life worth more than money.  Togetherness is one of them. In late 2009, I asked Ann Marie what she wanted for Christmas.  She said, ANN MARIE: “All I want is to spend more time with our family and for you, me and Sean to work together again.  So if that means closing Las Olas…so be it.” JIM: When I asked Sean what he wanted, he gave me the same answer. Funny, it's what I wanted deep down inside, too. It's done. ANNOUNCER: Announcing the first, last and only Happy Together Sale. The entire inventory of the Las Olas store has been moved to the original store location in Lighthouse Point.  The Dunns are back together again. JIM:  Join us in our family celebration.  We've got fine jewelry hanging from the rafters.  Two stores full of diamonds, watches and jewelry jammed into one...
