About 80, during a recent drought. Thank you for listening! Please leave a 5 star review, share and subscribe!
Last month – some 70 million years after it lived – a new species of predatory dinosaur was identified. The newly named species -- Tyrannosaurus macraeensis -- was closely related to the iconic Tyrannosaurus rex. Researchers believe it may be T.rex's closest relative, even though it may have lived seven million years before T.rex. Harrisburg University of Science and Technology professor Dr. Steven Jasinski was a part of a team of researchers that made the discovery, which came 40 years after the dinosaur's fossils were found in New Mexico. But just within the past 11 years, Jasinski and other researchers began studying the fossils of what was believed to be a Tyrannosaurus rex. On The Spark Tuesday, Jasinski spoke about how the researchers determined they had found a different species,"We have parts of the skull and we have some of the parts of the spine. The backbone, some of the vertebrae, or at least piece of the vertebrae. And previously, especially with the lower jaw that we had recovered, it looked similar to T.rex, most super large predatory dinosaurs that we find that are around this age and in this general region of the world, are all considered to be T.rex, because T.rex seems to be pretty expansive and all over the place. But smaller features of the jaw or pieces of the skull, especially around the eyes themselves, tell us once we looked more in depth, that this is distinct from T.rex. It's something new and different." Tyrannosaurus macraeensis may have been 35 feet long with different eyes and teeth than the T.rex. The discovery of Tyrannosaurus macraeensis has scientists rethinking how and where Tyrannosaurus rex evolved, according to Jasinski,"The thought was that we have really, really old members of the group from North America. They travel to Asia, and then they eventually traveled back to North America. And T.rex basically then came from Asia. And so that's what we always have assumed. But now finding older specimens that are more closely related in the southern part of the United States and southern North America, it looks like what we may have is that T.rex actually evolved in southern North America instead. And then some offshoots went to Asia, some just moved north into the north of the United States and Canada. And so it's painting us a different picture of where these animals are coming from and how they're evolving and how they're changing over time." The fossils of the T.macraeensis were found in 1983 and have been on display in a New Mexico museum. With the new discovery, museums throughout the world may be studying the fossils of what they thought were T.rex remains to determine what they actually have are bones from a Tyrannosaurus macraeensis.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Evolutionary theory, is it going extinct? Only the evidence can tell. That evidence would include brand new dinosaur fossil finds, including more discoveries of dinosaur soft-tissue tissue, over 100 to be exact. That's right there are multiple evidences of soft-tissue, but that's not all. In this interview, besides answering objections to soft tissue finds, Dr. Thomas reviews the new discovery of a dinosaur being attacked by a mammal! This interview has numerous current topics featured in it, so it is required viewing for those who want to keep up with current topics in science!

Where Does Mitt Romney's Revolt Leave Him With the Republican Party? (0:30)Guest: McKay Coppins, Staff Writer, The Atlantic, Author of “The Wilderness”It's a Mitt moment. Again. The former Republican Presidential candidate is now the first senator in US history to vote to remove a president of his own party from office. Before Utah Senator Mitt Romney cast his vote to convict President Trump of abusing his power, he arranged a series of interviews with reporters to explain why. For Some, Meditation Has Negative Side Effects (18:50)Guest: Willoughby Britton, PhD, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Director of the Clinical and Affective Neuroscience Laboratory, Brown UniversityIt's become so easy to dabble in meditation that the percentage of American adults who've given it a try has more than tripled in recent years. All you need is a smartphone app or a YouTube video. It's a cheap way to improve your state of mind, and scientific experiments show it can actually rewire your brain in helpful ways. Which begs the question, is it safe? If it's changing your body and mind, is this the kind of thing people ought to be doing unsupervised? Does Racial Bias Drive Prosecutors to Punish Blacks More Harshly? (35:56)Guest: Christopher Robertson, Professor of Law, University of ArizonaIn America's justice system, blacks are imprisoned at almost four times the rate of whites and receive longer prison sentences. How much of that disparity is a result of biased prosecutors deciding to more harshly punish people of color? Is Caffeine Bad for Your Kids? (50:34)Guest: Jennifer L. Temple, Director of the Nutrition and Health Research Laboratory, University at BuffaloWhat's the story with kids and caffeine? Does it really stunt growth? Should you worry if your teen likes energy drinks? How guilty should you feel when you occasionally cave to your 10-year old's pleas and let him have a Dr. Pepper? Now Introducing…the Allosaurus Jimmadseni (1:05:16)Guest: Mark Loewen, Paleontologist, University of UtahMore than 150 million years ago, the Allosaurus walked the earth. It's one of the biggest predatory dinosaurs that existed, and also one of the most plentiful fossils out there, making it uniquely useful for study. All these specimens have helped paleontologists from the Utah Museum of Natural History identify a new species of allosaur, called the Allosaurus Jimmadseni. When Complaining Is Good for You (1:25:39)Guest: Robin Kowalski, Professor of Psychology, Clemson University“No complaining.” That was the one hard-and-fast rule for all outings in Julie's family. Nobody likes a complainer. But we all do it - maybe not in the high-pitched whine of a toddler, but think about the venting you do with someone you're close to, or the dissatisfaction you lodge with a business that disappoints you. If complaining is so common, it can't be all bad, can it?

On this week's science segment from Fueled By Death Cast, it's all about dinosaurs. First, a new dinosaur species was identified in Japan. Kamuysaurus Japonicus is a new genus and species of hadrosaurid or duck-billed dinosaur. This new find will help scientists to further unlock the mysteries of these dinosaurs, including their reasons for being near large bodies of water. Then, new evidence about Tyrannosaurs Rex suggests that the holes in their skulls might work like giant thermostats. Much like alligators today have temperature regulators in their skull, the T. Rex could also have had this biological phenomenon.

Dinosaur A jumble of bones found in Venezuela belong to a group of very early dinosaurs, that could have been herd animals. Paul Barrett from the Natural History Museum explains to Professor Alice Roberts how a jumble of bones found in a 'bone bed' belong to a number of individual Laquintasaura venezuelae dinosaurs. They are an ancient, small, omnivorous dinosaur, which could have survived the Tertiary/Jurassic extinction event 200 million years ago. Genetically Editing Chickens Diseases devastate livestock around the world. In chickens for example the deadly strain of bird flu and the lesser known bacterial infection Campylobacter, does not only harm the chickens but is also a real threat to human health and welfare. Scientists are continually trying to develop vaccines, but the strains of bacteria keep evolving resistance to them. One of the solutions being explored at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, is genetic. Using a subtle form of genetic modification, called genome editing. The team are trying to find the genetic components of natural resistance in a wide group of chicken breeds, which they can then insert into the genome of livestock fowl in the hope of breeding healthier, safer chickens. Lightning A listener asks why lightning is jagged. Rhys Phillips from Airbus Group in Cardiff makes lightning in a lab. He has the answer. Rosetta The European Space Agency's robotic spacecraft Rosetta has reached the orbit of the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, and is about to start its detailed study. In the audacious and risky mission, the craft will follow the orbit of the comet as it approaches and passes the Sun. It will attempt to land a probe on the surface of the icy, rocky mass. It's hoped the mission will provide great insight into what comets are made of, how they behave as they heat up, creating its gassy coma and tail. And it's hoped Rosetta and its lander will be able to tell about where Earth's water and even some of the building blocks for life might have come from. Diatoms A type of phytoplankton, found in water, called Diatoms build hard silicon-based cell walls. Researchers, at the University of Galway, have shown it's possible to chemically transform the shells of living diatoms so they could carry drugs into our bodies in entirely new ways. Producer: Fiona Roberts.
