In this episode, Dani tells us how we can and must change our (US) society. They recommend reading Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz's books, "An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States" and "Not 'A Nation of Immigrants': Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and Exclusion" for a comprehensive history of the united states and its founding rooted in the settler-colonialist mindset. They'd also recommend watching HBO's Exterminate all the Brutes for a similar history lesson that does not sugarcoat genocide and is very graphic (so sit this one out if you're not up for that).Dani also recommend checking out the Tiny House Warrior's new comic titled, "The Fight Against the Transmountain Pipeline" for some background and history of TMX, its Indigenous-led resistance, and the oppression the Warriors face every Day. In this episode of Drunk Ex-Pastors we get a much-needed update on Christian's bidet use (!), and then break down his plan for getting Rachel McAdams to fall in love with him. We play a few voicemails — we hear from a caller asking about tattoos, from another asking about rock bands that stand the test of time, and from another with the balls to suggest that maybe Jason shouldn't pay his employees $500 per hour. We then lighten things up by discussing Handmaid's Tale and Exterminate All the Brutes. Biebers involve dogs-walkers and Hollywood's lies.

Rev. Ken begins this week's Message with the President’s statement about the Armenian Genocide, along with the response from the Turkish government. Many of our historical stories are difficult to reckon with, but it’s important that we’re honest about what happened, even if it’s painful. If that pain opens up a productive gap between reality and our aspirations, there can be growth and healing. Ken also shares a quote from James Baldwin about how accepting the past doesn’t mean drowning in it.

Filmmaker Raoul Peck has made one of the most audacious films to air on American television. The documentary series titled "Exterminate All The Brutes" tells the brutally honest history of colonialism, genocide and white supremacy, and dismantles the Eurocentric framework through which history is normally taught. He joins Michael Moore for a conversation on how this film got made, and what it has to say about the power of ignorance, the preservation of privilege and how the only way to upend all of this is for each of us to join the fight and never give up, no matter the consequences. Be sure to watch this profound and earth-shattering movie (now on HBO on demand and Max). While Joe Biden has pledged an “ironclad commitment to Israel's security," many Democrats in Congress, and outside of Congress, have been moving away from unquestioning support for Israel since the Israeli attacks on Gaza last week. John Nichols reports. Plus: It’s probably the most radical show that’s ever been on TV: Exterminate All the Brutes, the 4-part, 4-hour documentary about colonialism and genocide, by Raoul Peck, playing now on HBO Max. The Indian novelist Arundhati Roy says, “The trouble is that once you see it, you can’t un-see it. And once you’ve seen it, keeping quiet, saying nothing becomes as political an act as speaking out. Either way, you’re accountable.” And implicated. Our guest today is Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, author of the classic An Indigenous People’s History of the United States, whose lifework has been an ongoing project to shake us awake, to rouse us from the deep, deep American sleep of denial, to invite us to face history in all its glory and horror.
In this episode we talk to Zoé Samudzi. Dr. Samudzi has a PhD in Medical Sociology from the University of California, San Francisco. Her dissertation was about German colonialism, the Herero/Nama genocide, and the afterlife of that genocidal structure in the present. Her writing has appeared in Art in America, The New Republic, The New Inquiry, Jewish Currents, and other outlets. She is co-author of As Black as Resistance, which we spoke with her and co-author William C. Anderson back in 2018. In this conversation we talk about a range of topics related to settler colonialism and colonization in Africa, specifically in modern day Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Zoé shares with us some of the historical fights between European nation states, and European settlers in Southern Africa. She also shares a little bit of history on the Nama/Herero genocide and how it was utilized by the British to undermine the German Empire. Josh and Zoé explore the relationship between colonialism and fascism. And Zoé also shares some thoughts on the film Exterminate All The Brutes and challenges US exceptionalism in relationship to our analysis of settler colonialism and genocide. Finally, Zoé talks about museums as ongoing sites of colonial violence and we discuss this in relationship to the recent revelations about the U Penn museum and U Penn and Princeton’s use of the remains of Delisha and Tree Africa, two MOVE children killed in the 1985 bombing, whose remains were taken from their families without consent or notice. MOVE has an event scheduled for May 15th in recognition of the 36th Anniversary of the MOVE bombing. You can also see their press conference addressing U Penn. And there’s a petition for the repatriation of the remains of Tree and Delisha, and financial reparations to the affected families. Suggested readings from Zoé Samudzi: - Mobilizing Black Germany by Tiffany Florvil - The Problems of Genocide by Dirk Moses - Potential History: Unlearning Imperialism by Ariella Aïsha Azoulay - The Brutish Museums by Dan Hicks - Multidirectional Memory by Michael Rothberg - Exterminate all the Brutes by Sven Lindqvist - Alabama in Africa by Andrew Zimmerman May is a really busy month for us, beyond this great conversation we have a number of other exciting new episodes planned. If you are able to become a patron of the show, you can do so for as little as $1 a month.

With clips of Amy Goodman and Democracy Now featuring author Raul Pec discussing his new book Exterminate All The Brutes. This is a historical account of what really happened in Haiti. Cristopher Columbus discovered nothing and was lost. He thought he was on the other side of the world in india. He landed in the Haiti and terrorized the region. Later in the podcast I cover they myth that the US does not meddle in foreign elections. The US and the CIA in specific is the world heavyweight when it comes to meddling in foreign elections. The US has meddled in some 80 foreign elections. Yet we have the gall to point the finger at Russia in regards to the 2016 US election. The recent HBO documentary series, directed by Raoul Peck, offers a grand narrative of European colonialism and American imperialism which is broadly sympathetic with the works of Mark Twain from the final decade of his life. In this episode, a diverse group of scholars discuss Peck's film, as well as where it fits in global cinema, the U.S. media ecosystem, and postcolonial scholarship.

In the last episode, G & O began discussion of "Exterminate All the Brutes," Raoul Peck's 2021 film now streaming on HBO Max. The brothers focused on the repeated symbol of white people's “heart of darkness” echoed from the book that title is taken from: Joseph Conrad's novel Heart of Darkness, written about Belgium's rape and genocide of Africans in Congo. The brothers also brought in some of the tools of psychoanalysis. They paid close attention to language and images to read the unconscious intentions that drive and direct an action, even if people are unaware of those drives, Seen in this way, this film's topic is the genocidal drive at the core of whiteness, and it is articulated so that whiteness can be understood and ended. In this episode, the brothers continue their discussion of "Exterminate All the Brutes," by homing in on the film's connection between images that shape how we think about genocide, such as John Wayne movies and monuments and histories of genocide, and the structural conditions of modern u.s. society which are designed to result in genocidal effects on Indigenous and Black people. In the present moment, whiteness is engaging in a collective refusal to see itself in the mirror image of other sadistic figures, like Jeffrey Dahmer. The psychic structure of whiteness, stretching across many generations and geographies, is sadistic — meaning, it gets juiced from harming those it sees as “others” — even if that harm is concealed while it occurs and is later denied completely. The brothers analyze the industry term “artisanal miner,” for example, which sounds pretty but conceals the slave-like conditions under which Black people in Congo today are forced to produce the coltan mineral that makes our smartphones work. The brothers conclude with their score of the revolutionizing potential of “Exterminate All the Brutes.” NOTE: The brothers apologize for the moments of crosstalk, which are really bad in this episode. This is an ongoing problem with the Anchor software, which the brothers have brought to Anchor's attention. They will work on fixing it in future episodes and might end up moving to a different recording system and platform.
After filmmaker Raoul Peck made his award-winning James Baldwin documentary “I Am Not Your Negro,” he had a lot of suitors in Hollywood. But it was HBO that didn’t blink when Peck explained what he wanted to do next: a project about colonization, extermination and genocide. That evolved into "Exterminate All the Brutes," a four-part series that zigzags through 700 years of colonial history.
The brothers are back with part 1 of a 2-part discussion of Raoul Peck's new HBO documentary, "Exterminate All the Brutes" (2021). The first thing G & O examine is how the film explodes the standard story that documentary tells about America. Documentary, O says, is related to ethnographic writing, a form of media innovated by the very same genocidal colonizers this film depicts. This film will guide you through a Frantz Fanon-style reading of the murder whiteness carries in its heart. it excavates the murderous events of the last 500 years so you can glimpse the sadistic drive in the collective unconscious of global whiteness. Be ready to go there. This film is made to take you there.

We also talked about libertarian vs conservatism, decentralization, how the FBI hides Bitcoin that it seizes, new Allen Iverson praise, Nick Cannon getting his show back and FALLING IN LINE WITH YOUR LEADERS. For years, Haitian filmmaker Raoul Peck has been crafting eloquent correctives to Eurocentric and capitalist histories through acclaimed films like Lumumba (2000), I Am Not Your Negro (2016), and The Young Karl Marx (2017). His latest opus takes that project to its limit: Exterminate All the Brutes is a four-part HBO documentary series that retells the story of our world from a perspective rarely centered in such narratives—that of the colonized. Drawing from three books—Exterminate All the Brutes by Sven Lindqvist, which borrows its title from Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness; An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz; and Silencing the Past by Haitian-American scholar Michel-Rolph Trouillot—Peck crafts a sweeping historical documentary that feels at once intimate and sweeping, familiar and new. In this episode of the podcast, Film Comment editor Devika Girish chatted at length with Peck about assembling this expansive series, confronting the gaps in colonial archives, and drawing continuities with the contemporary crises of fake news and historical amnesia.
