Brian Scudamore was a high school dropout. Waiting at a McDonald's drive-through, he spotted a ratty old pickup with “Junk Hauling” spray-painted on the side. “I could do that,” Brian told himself. Driven by an insatiable curiosity and inspired to do things bigger and better, Brian bought a beat-up old truck and launched what today is the $600 million global industry giant, 1-800-Got-Junk, which dominates the junk removal business. Brian is the founder and CEO of Vancouver-based 02E Brands — Ordinary 2 Exceptional — which offers innovative home services franchises, including 1-800-Got Junk, Wow 1 Day Painting, and Shack Shine. This week, Brian shares practical insights from his latest bestselling book, BYOB: Business Your Own Business, Be Your Own Boss. The book debuted at #2 on The Wall Street Journal's bestsellers list. BYOB is a follow-up to Brian's popular 2018 book, WTF! [Willing to Fail]: How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success. Both BYOB and WTF were written with Roy H. Williams, founder of Roy H. Williams Marketing and co-founder of Wizard Academy. Brian is a fervent believer in the power of thinking BIG. Listen in as he explains why everyone has it within their means to achieve their dreams. “If Brian can succeed, so can you,” says host and award-winning author Dean Rotbart. “And that's not rubbish.” Photo: Brian Scudamore, O2E BrandsPosted: May 23, 2022Monday Morning Run Time: 44:12

Got junk? Today, we have a very special guest and he goes by the name of Brian Scudamore!Brian is a serial entrepreneur, author of WTF?! (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success, and founder & CEO of O2E Brands, the parent company of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?, WOW 1 DAY PAINTING, and Shack Shine. Brian's story is super interesting because he's literally THE definition of someone who's always taken the road less traveled. Although he never completed high school, he managed to persuade the college admissions office that he had what it takes to thrive in college. Now, while he talked himself into university, he had to find a way to pay for his education. And although his step-dad was a liver transplant surgeon, and certainly had the finances to pay for Brian's education, he chose not to. He felt it wouldn't be a good return on investment and that Brian needed to learn a valuable lesson since he didn't complete high school. So, Brian took matters into his own hands and one day... While in a McDonalds drive thru, of all places, Brian saw what he describes as a beat-up pickup truck with plywood side panels built on the box and thought,"That's my ticket to pay for college!"And it was. Soon after, he dropped out of college and focused on his business. And it payed off tenfold.Today, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? brings in over $200 million dollars in annual revenue! Not to mention the other 2 other multi-million-dollar home service businesses Brian runs, WOW 1 DAY PAINTING and Shack Shine. In this interview Brian and Ennis will talk about Brian's philosophy WTF (willing to fail), how to hire candidates with a founder's heart, as well as whether you need a business partner or a mentor for your business. We hope you enjoy :) Get a copy of Brian's book: https://amzn.to/34hvNo7Follow Brian on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brianscudamoreReach out to Ennis directly at ennis@imadeformore.com Follow Ennis on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ennisdakhilFollow Ennis on Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ennisdakhil/For more, visit our website at www.ennisdakhil.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/immadeformore/message
Today on the show we’re talking to Brian Scudamore, the founder and CEO of O2E brands, the parent company of 1-800 Got Junk, Wow One Day Painting, and Shack Shine. He also wrote a book, WTF?! (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success, talking about his story of how he came from small beginnings to owning several companies. As a kid Brian moved from school to school, having to make new friends, learn the environment, and adapt. Brian thinks that had a big impact on becoming an entrepreneur. He had to learn to overcome those obstacles, meet new people, and create new relationships.Brian talks about how he needed to make failures in order to get to where he is today, he mentions a time, early in 1-800-GOT-JUNK’s life that he had to fire 11 people at once because they weren’t good fits for his image of the company. He doesn’t regret any of it because without those mistakes, he wouldn’t be where his today, with the lessons he’s learned from them. Brian Scudamore is the Founder and CEO of O2E Brands—a company with four successful home service brands under that banner, including 1-800-Got-Junk?; WOW 1 Day Painting; You Move Me; and Shack Shine. He’s the author of WTF (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success. Brian learned the ins and outs of business by running his own. He has learned that creating the right culture at work, valuing your employees, and treating your customers well is critical to achieving business results; a great idea is not enough.Stew and Brian talk about the value of having a vision, a painted picture of the future; about Brian’s successes and his failures; and about the lessons he’s learned on the importance of people at work and, most of all, on how crucial it is to learn from one’s experiences -- especially failures -- by actively, intentionally reflecting on what happened and why it happened as it did. The not-so-secret ingredient in Brian’s philosophy is just that: learning doesn’t happen by magic, it occurs as a result of taking the time to look back and discover insights you can use in the future. Brian shares some compelling, instructive examples of how he’s done this in his life, starting when he was a child, and how the willingness to fail -- the very celebration of failure -- is part of his approach not only to leading his businesses but also to parenting his three children. We intellectually understand the value of failure, but so few of us actually want to experience it. How can we embrace failure with less of the sting? Is it even possible? How can we freely experiment and try new things, whether it works or not, so that we can achieve growth in our industry? Brian Scudamore is the Founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? He is a serial entrepreneur and a high-school dropout. Brian is also the author of his newest book, WTF?! (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success. As an over-achieving failure, Brian has learned a thing or two about picking himself up and dusting himself off. As Brian and his co-author Roy H. Williams were wrapping up the book, a theme kept popping up over and over again; it was ‘failure.’ Failing repeatedly was what led to Brian’s bigger successes in life. These failings were actually big, big blessings in disguise for Brian. For example, five years into the 1-800 business, Brian found himself hating his work and knowing he didn’t hire the right people. So, he fired them all and built everything up from scratch again. These were big and very tough lessons Brian learned early on in his career. Today, he’d rather take the time to find the right people than hiring ‘bodies’ to fill seats. When Brian Scudamore was 19 years old he was in a McDonalds parking lot trying to figure out how to pay for college. He saw a dirty pick-up truck advertising a junk removal service. Realizing that he could pay for college by hauling junk, Brian invested $700 in his own junk-removal-service. With that initial investment, he built an unlikely empire: 1-800-Got-Junk. Today 1-800-Got-Junk serves 200 locations across three countries. His story is full of ups and downs. Including dropping out of college, his decision to fire his entire staff early on in his career, to living with depression and ADD. He's a regular contributor to Forbes and has a new book out, called WTF?! (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success. In addition to 1-800-Got-Junk, Brian is the founder and CEO of O2E Brands, the parent company behind 4 different home service companies.
Are you living a life by default or by design? Many of us are living a life by default. We wake up, check social media, react to what we see, head into the office, check email, react, sit in meetings, get up, check email, react, and then go to the next meeting – and this repeats day after day after day! We feel so busy, and we wonder why we don’t get anything done. When you live a life by default, you just get what you get – but when you life a life by design, you are working towards the goals you want with intention and a strategy. Today’s guest has travelled down a long and difficult road, but there’s ONE thing thing that allowed him to turn his failures into his success: a clear vision. In this episode, we’re going to learn how Brian Scudamore, CEO of O2E Brands and author of WTF?! (Willing to Fail), found the keys to success in his failures, ultimately growing a $400M+ business without sacrificing time with the people who matter most. In this episode, you will learn... [9:20] What your life looks like when you life a life by design [14:00] How you can start adopting the mindset that everything doesn’t matter equally [16:40] How to listen to your failures [22:00] How you can make time to cast a vision when you’re so busy working on your business [33:50] What you can to do help the people you lead create a life, not a living [37:00] Why you need to fall in love with your vision The ONE Thing to Implement From This Episode: Brian tells us that the ONE thing that will make creating a life – not a living – easier or unnecessary is casting that vivid vision. My guest is Brian Scudamore. Brian is the founder of 1-800-GOT-JUNK. Brian and his team have grown 1-800-GOT-JUNK into the world's largest junk removal service. Not only that, they scaled that bad boy and started three more home service brands. He's got his eye on $ 1 billion. He's living the DREAM THINK DO life… so let's get to this! Listen To The Podcast: Resources: Brian's Book: WTF?! (Willing to Fail): How Failure Can Be Your Key to Success Find out more about Brian: Click here Interview: Brian Scudamore: Thanks for having me, Mitch. Mitch Matthews: Let's talk about how this got started. Brian Scudamore: There I was looking for a way to pay for college. But my college education took a back seat when I realized I was making more money and having more fun and learning way more about a business by building a business versus studying in school. So, I had a conversation with my dad, who's a liver transplant surgeon. Three years into my degree in college. I said, “Dad, I got some awesome news for ya. I said I'm quitting school and…” Mitch Matthews: Get ready, dad. Brian Scudamore: He says, “how is that good news?” I gonna learn so much more about business running one, instead of studying from textbooks, from professors that have never started a business in their life. While my dad did not get the good news train, 10 years later he sat down. He said, yeah, Brian you did the right thing. Mitch Matthews: Good, good call. But obviously this willing to fail was something you were willing to do early on. Would you say that ... At what point would you say this started to set in that being willing to fail was key. Brian Scudamore: I think I've always been a bit of a risk-taker as an entrepreneur. I grew up with grandparents who had a small business. Now they ... It was an army surplus store in San Francisco. I used to work there every summer and Christmas vacation. I don't think they took a lot of risks. But I enjoyed the game of business and was fired to take that entrepreneurial leap. Maybe it was just a part of my DNA. I don't know. But I found myself whenever I was starting a business, I didn't mind putting myself out there and making some mistakes. It just felt like the fastest and easiest way to learn. Brian Scudamore: Five years into my business, to the half a million in revenue, I felt good about what I was building. But not good about the people on board. That old phrase of one bad apple spoils the whole bunch. I probably had ... Nine of my 11 employees were bad apples. It was a leadership moment for me to get rid of the entire crew. I brought all 11 in and I said, sorry guys I've let you down as your leader. I have not given you the love and support or found the right people and fired everyone to only start again. But to take that leadership lesson of, okay I failed here. This hurts. I've gotten rid of my entire company. Yet starting again there was that valuable lesson and it got better. Mitch Matthews: Not bad. Well, That's ... I love that story in the book. That took some guts. As I'm sitting there, here you had to be thinking, oh gosh this is rough. This is embarrassing. Also, you had to look down the barrel of running the business solo for a while, too until bringing on the right people. But, that's the kind of thing where that took guts at the time where you needed it, right? 'Cause you could have just kind of tried to maintain it with status quo. I'm guessing you would have been a completely different place today. Brian Scudamore: Yeah. We learned or I learned that day 'cause it was just me, that building a company is all about finding the right people and treating them right. The company would not be what it is today. Today will ... This year we'll do $440 million in revenue. There's no way we would have come anywhere close to that hadn't we found this important mantra of finding the right people. For someone like ourselves heavily branded in everything we do,

Today, Brian Scudamore talks about perseverance and why failures are so legendary. The founder of 1800-GOT-JUNK?, the world's largest junk removal business, also shares how you can be a legendary entrepreneur even in a non-sexy field. Professionalizing Junk Removal When 1-800-GOT-JUNK? took off, the general reaction of other people is asking why they didn't think of it first when it was such a simple concept. But it was, in fact, difficult to execute, and Brian saw a gap within the space. Nobody had professionalized junk removal. So they set out to build the business and added uniforms and friendliness into what they do. All these efforts have changed the game for the junk space. Differentiating the Brand 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has had various slogans that capture their very essence, like “We'll stash your trash in a flash” and “FedEx of junk removal.” They wanted to be identified as a brand that everyone would know about. “We were trying to give people a sense of what is it that we're really trying to create. We're differentiating ourselves.” - Brian Scudamore They also had a headline about their junk removal process, previously comprised of three steps. At present, this process is simply, “You point, junk disappears.” It's like magic, and people have become so familiar with this process that whenever truckies show up, customers will just start pointing to their trash, mocking the brand in a fun way. Willing to Fail?! From an outsider's perspective, Brian might have gotten lucky because they were the first to have thought of making junk removal a business. But before its legendary takeoff, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? took eight years to reach a million in revenue. If anything, it's slow growth, but because of the momentum and their sheer perseverance, the business became a success. They failed and failed, but Brian has never wanted to be someone who wins easily. “To me, failure needs to be my best friend in order for me to grow as a person, to be better as a leader, to inspire others in our business to live their best life.” - Brian Scudamore To hear more about how Brian launched his business to new heights by being willing to fail, download and listen to the episode. You need to figure out your values and find the right people based on those values. For a company to grow in scale, you need to have values that everyone in the company aligns by. And it’s more important that you’ve got values and that they’re yours and you own them versus what those values are. Storytelling is important to make sure your teams are alive with the values that are important to you. Everyone has the responsibility to make the world a better place, whether it’s with us or taking and learning from us and doing it on the outside. Entrepreneurs break rules. Sometimes it’s better to beg for forgiveness versus ask for permission. You don’t want anyone to get hurt, you don’t want to do anything dangerous, but you get out there sometimes and you push boundaries. We’re in the storytelling age more than ever. It’s about finding new and different ways to tell stories and tell the world about the interesting and unique things that you as a leader or an entrepreneur are doing. Action Steps: Figure out the values that you stand on. What words describe who you already are? Not who you want to be or try to be but who you are today. Give your people feedback immediately. If some of them are not living the company values, tell them why, tell them which value they’re not living, and give them some feedback. If they’re living the values and demonstrating them, you also want to give them feedback and give them the kudos as to how they’re doing such a great job, and celebrate those values. As a leader, you must live and demonstrate the values of your company. Be careful when you set a “painted picture”. Just think big. Don’t let anything else get in your way. Then recruit the right people to help you make that picture a reality. Build your business out ready to scale by having the right systems in place to recruit the right people, train the right people, and so on. Brian said: “It’s important to take a team and, even if they’re not experienced, to trust the team, to work with them to create values. You decide, what words are important? Does it resonate? And then stick to those.” “Failure is temporary. But also, let’s not forget, success is temporary… Success and failure go hand in hand. Never get too cocky that you believe that you’re always going to succeed. Be willing to endure the storms that you face in life.” More from Brian Scudamore: Brian’s LinkedIn Brian’s Twitter (@BrianScudamore) Brian’s Instagram (@brianscudamore) O2E Brands’ Website Tools and resources mentioned in this episode: Good to Great: Why Some Companies Make the Leap...And Others Don't by Jim Collins The One Minute Manager by Ken Blanchard and Johnson Spencer WTF?!
