In the sixth of the CLAA Series for the Fresh from the Hill Podcast, CLAA board members interview the 2023 MacArthur ‘genius grant' recipient, Manuel Muñoz, MFA ‘98. In his writing, Muñoz draws on his roots growing up in a Mexican-American family of farmworkers in California's Central Valley to explore the impacts of racial politics and limited economic opportunities in this region. He tells the stories of a wide spectrum of people, including mothers and sons, U.S.-born citizens and immigrants, young gay men and teenage parents. Manuel details how his academic work at Harvard lead to him teaching young minds in Boston and how that experience led him to pursue a Master of Fine Arts at Cornell. Manuel details how mentors like Helena Maria Viramontes shaped his love for writing and his appetite for short stories. Muñoz, who is professor of English at the University of Arizona, has published three story collections, “Zigzagger” (2003), “The Faith Healer of Olive Avenue” (2007), and “The Consequences” (2022), as well as the novel “What You See in the Dark” (2011). A new pop up prayer meeting has been invited, by Harriet Oleson, into Walnut Grove led by the somewhat charismatic Reverend Danforth. It's the usual run of the mill gathering until Reverened Danforth demonstrates his ability to cure those who are suffering from an affliction. He makes a wheelchair bound women walk, a man toss aside his crutches and a blind woman see. But what he can't do is cure a ruptured appendix....but he can use his charm to sway his listeners to believe what he wants them to hear. The only people who aren't falling for this are: The Ingalls, The Gravey's, Doc Baker and Reverend Alden. Because of this distraction, Reverend Alden is now in jeopardy of losing his position at the Walnut Grove Church. An out of town delivery brings Charles to the tent of Reverend Danfoth where he sees a repeat of miracles performed on the same people he witnessed back in Walnut Grove. Which leads to a confrontation I've been praying for. Did Harriet Oleson forget how serious having acute appendicitis is? Anyone else happy that Anna's name got dropped and Reverend Alden still acknowledges his nuptials? Will Matthew Dobbs start to trust science more even if it still comes out of Doc Baker's mouth? Join us as popular guest & historian John Collins returns to talk about John Alexander Dowie. (1847-1907) A controversial “faith healer” who migrated to the United States from Australia in the late 1800s. Dowie was referred to by critics of his time as a “confidence man”, a person who appealed to the confidence of victims using deception to convince or persuade them out of money or into submission. In part 1, we look into how Dowie initially tried to create his own cult of personality in parts of Australia and California before entering the Windy City of Chicago and becoming the unstoppable force convincing thousands of converts to migrate into Chicago and eventually to his communal in Zion City, Illinois.
