Harvey Danger vocalist Sean Nelson makes a good case for his group being, in his words, "the last band through the door" of the alternative revolution: Though the quartet went gold thanks to the frenetic, inescapable "Flagpole Sitta" as the nineties closed, the landscape for them (and cohorts such as Cake, Semisonic or Fastball) would look much different a year later. By 2000, a sudden contingent of beefy backwards cappers, led by the likes of Limp Bizkit and Papa Roach, had commandeered arenas and the airwaves as an antithesis to pop radio. Paired with a massive label shake-up, this left Harvey Danger's expansive second album King James Version DOA. But like a lot of unsung masterworks, many have praised King James Version over the last quarter century for its dialed-in cacophony and sarcastic swagger -- enough to drum up major excitement for a first-ever vinyl pressing, which hit shelves as a Record Store Day exclusive recently from both Barsuk and Latent Print Records. Today, Nelson gives us the full arc of how King James Version was born, died and rose again, taking its throne on 12-inch format to mark the album's 25th anniversary. Record Store Day 2025 is April 12th. For the most up-to-date news about all things RSD, including The List, visit RecordStoreDay.com) In the last installment of our month-long Record Store Day 2025 preview series, we meet the members of L.A. band, Wallows (Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters, and Cole Preston) in anticipation of their RSD First Release, the MORE EP (Atlantic Records). The trio share their backstory, how they came to work with producer John Congleton, and duet with Clairo. And 25 years after the band Harvey Danger released their sophomore LP, King James Version, Barsuk Records is releasing a deluxe two-album gatefold reissue as an RSD First Release, with new liner notes by singer and lyricist Sean Nelson, who joins us to unpack the emotional baggage behind the making of the album, and why their previous album's biggest hit ("Flagpole Sitta") became something of a mixed blessing. But first, Paul takes a moment to pay his respects to two of his musical heroes who left us this past week; bassist Dave Allen (Gang Of Four, Shriekback), and celebrated drummer Clem Burke (Blondie, Eurythmics, and more.) The Record Store Day Podcast is a weekly music chat show written, produced, engineered and hosted by Paul Myers, who also composed the theme music and selected interstitial music.  Executive Producers (for Record Store Day) Michael Kurtz and Carrie Colliton.    Please consider subscribing to our podcast wherever you get podcasts, and tell your friends, we're here every week and we love making new friends.

A look at the music that influenced me.There's so much music that I love that wasn't mentioned here! Here's a few more artists and albums that mean a lot to me!Soen, a band very similar to Tool. Complex rhythms, inspirational lyrics, and all around beautiful. Our Lady Peace - Starseed: an excellent album full of powerful anthems and heartfelt tracks.Harvey Danger - Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone: A surprisingly emotional rock album about living through loss, loneliness, trauma, and turmoil. If all you've ever heard was Flagpole Sitta, you're missing out, because the rest of the album has much more depth... And a song about the Hitchcock classic Vertigo.Yonaka - An artist with truly powerful and emotional vocals and lyrics.Troi Irons - An incredible artist with an incredible voice and a lot of sincerity and compassion. Grandson - An artist with a lot on his mind. Most of his music is centered around political outrage and social justice issues... So... You know, your mileage may vary. Upon rejoining the band following his departure in the Get Back sessions, George pulled his more serious material, most of which would end up on All Things Must Pass. Along with his blusey and lightweight "For You Blue," he also brought in a stomping little piano song he wrote during the sessions, "Old Brown Shoe." It wouldn't find a home for a few months until the band needed a b-side to "The Ballad of John & Yoko," and even then, it remains one of the more obscure songs in the Beatles catalogue. But that said, I've always loved it. George sings like he's really having fun with it, and whoever the hell is playing whatever on this song (it's all very murky and mysterious) is really killing it. But what's he singing about? George's shoe game was pretty solid after all. Maybe it's about stepping out with a new love? Maybe it's about leaving someone...or someone(s)? It's always a pleasure to welcome our old pal Sean Nelson back to RTB! Sean is best known as the singer of the band Harvey Danger, who's song "Flagpole Sitta" is one of the 90s defining songs, and the tip of the iceburg of a ton of great music in their catalogue that you'd do yourselves a favor to dig into (along with is own solo work). He's also now the host of his own podcast, The Wonder of It All, a deep dive in to the pros and cons of success. He's a great conversationalist so it only makes sense his podcast would be fantastic. At least I'm not ugly and annoying! Welcome back to NOCLIP Pocket! Today, we're talking about Perfect Tides, a point and click adventure game in true throwback fashion. With a pixel art style and several ways to interact with your environment, you explore the island of Perfect Tides solving puzzles and picking up inventory items. Yet, this isn't really the draw of the game. It can be, if you're looking for an adventure game that's like the classics, but more forgiving, but the character work is the real star of the show here. You play as Mara, a 15 year old girl (in the year 2000), as she struggles to find her place in life, participating in the early internet, going to high school and trying to get along with her family. It's not new ground to cover, for sure, but the depth of characterization given to Mara, as well as many of the supporting characters in the game, is deeply impressive. Most people will be able to relate to at least something Mara is going through, and the game's perspective helps to provide some self examination on how we all handle our trauma. It's a rough game at times, both mechanically and as far as content goes, but the end result is a beautiful study of teenage life. We're going to be talking about the up-and-downsides of styling this game after old school adventure titles and express our mechanical woes, we separate the story from the characters and discuss how much importance is placed on the latter, and we make some medical suggestions, even though we are not doctors. Thank you for joining us again this week! This game caught at least me off guard with just how frank and relatable it was, but I imagine that must be different for everyone. If you played it, what did you think? Were you in the age range to appreciate the references to the culture of the new millennium, or do you think that doesn't really matter because we all know Flagpole Sitta or whatever? Shane and Trevor are fortunate to have lead singer and talented writer Sean Nelson along for the track-by-track deep dive of this amazing album, a favorite of Trevor's since he first heard it in college and remains so today. If you only know Harvey Danger by their hit song "Flagpole Sitta" from the late 90's, you truly missed out on one of the most underrated bands from the era. Sean details the origin of the band, their disorientingly quick rise to international fame, and reveals the history of what transpired between each of their albums. They also discuss the decision to release this album for free online which was truly a cutting edge decision in 2005 (Radiohead may or may not have copied them), and the eventual decision that Harvey Danger had reached it's finish line. Sean was incredibly generous with is time and shed valuable insight on lyrics Trevor had been pouring over for over a decade...murdering his time in cold blood.

As the opening track on Rubber Soul, "Drive My Car" represents the line in the sand in which The Beatles shake off their beat-group roots, and firmly enter a smokey, hazy world, influenced by the world they've conquered and toured, and made in their image. Their continuing love of R&B manifests itself in the bass driven tune, propelling a story of a would-be star persuading the narrator to be her "chauffeur" (nudge nudge wink wink say no more) before she even has a car. A great example of a fascinating and clever story in song. It's a great song for sure, and it's an important song in their oeuvre, but I've never really LOVED it. To help me figure out why, we're joined by Sean Nelson, the singer behind the beloved band Harvey Danger, who's late 90s hit "Flagpole Sitta" has grown to be one of the most enduring songs of that decade, with its sharp wit and singalong hooks. In addition to the 3 albums his band released, his own solo work, collaborations with other artists like Robyn Hitchcock and Death Cab for Cutie, he's also been the editor of Seattle's The Stranger newspaper, written a 33 1/3 series book on Joni Mitchell, acted in indie films, ran a record label, and, oh yeah, he's a HUGE Beatles fan. His most recent album is an absolutely fantastic collection of Harry Nilsson songs called Nelson Sings Nilsson, which we recommend you download/stream/buy as soon as you're done listening to this episode. Topics explored in this episode range from the adventures of starting a band, doing music on your own terms, working for pay versus being paid for your work, The Beatles being the blueprint for what a band should be, ugly crying at Paul shows, to a shared love of the Monkees, and all points in between. Non-Beatles songs included in this episode: Harvey Danger - “Flagpole Sitta” from Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? Paul & Linda McCartney - “Backseat of My Car” from Ram Archie Bell & The Drells - “Tighten Up” from Tighten Up Harvey Danger - “Little Round Mirrors” from Little By Little Sean Nelson & Seattle Rock Orchestra - “Helter Skelter” (live) Sean Nelson - “Gotta Get Up” from Nelson Sings Nilsson What do you think? Too high? To low? Just right? Harvey Danger was one of the last of the Buzz Bin bands, in those waning when major labels were still forces to be reckoned with and MTV rotation was all it took to cement a song’s status as a generation-defining hit. Fresh out of college, the band scored its one major hit with “Flagpole Sitta,” the second track on the band’s debut record, which, all told cost around $3,000 to record.  Through some combination of unpopular choices, one major flub on the part of some crew member for 120 minutes and poor choices from above, the band would never manage to recapture such success, in spite of, quite arguably, releasing two far stronger records before disbanding for good in 2009.  In the days since, Nelson’s seemingly tried his hands at everything, playing keyboards for indie darlings The Long Winters, taking on backup vocal duties for the likes of Nada Surf and Death Cab for Cutie, taking roles in a number of films and writing for Seattle’s alt-weekly, The Stranger.  Last summer, Nelson even returned to songwriting, releasing his first solo record, Make Good Choices for the tiny Seattle label Really Records. Nelson and I met up while he was in New York to help a friend work on a musical, also using the opportunity to play an intimate show downstairs at Brooklyn’s Union Hall, along with his new wife Shenandoah Davis, who accompanied him on piano as he worked through solo songs and the occasional Harvey Danger number. We spoke about gauging one’s own accomplishments in the wake of massive success, occupational diversification and how to take a backseat to someone else’s creative force.
