For high school student-athletes, it can be easy to focus on the athletic aspect of the recruitment process. But at the end of the day, recruitment is just the vehicle for going to college. Accessing higher education provides a real space to challenge yourself to grow academically, athletically, and socially. As a coach, I have had to make phone calls to families and share the news that while they were interested in attending the Academy or University, that they could not be admitted for a host of reasons. It is not a fun conversation to have, nor is it news that anyone is eager to face. To address the questions around the actual admissions process, the role of diversity recruiting and the impact of covid-19 on the future incoming classes, we will hear from Ms. Kim Holley, senior director of admissions at Appalachian State University. For Kim, being strategic throughout her own education experience, prepared her well to school us on the college admissions process considerations for Black girls.

The Cardinals have a lot of starting pitching depth, and two of their "guarantees" for next year's rotation are KK Kim and Miles Mikolas. With Mikolas, the question is will he be more like his 2018 self or his 2019 self in 2021? A healthy offseason is helpful, but what do the stats have to say? For Kim, the question is will he regress just like Mikolas did after the league gets a better look at him? Support Us By Supporting Our Sponsors! Community • Education • Arts' @theroundtable interview with Outsider Artist Kim Carlson @theroundtable is a podcast & short videos series hosted by Community • Education • Arts (@4CEArts), where we discuss the Arts with writers, musicians, artists, and all kinds of creatives! Podcast episodes air on our website (https://cearts.org/theroundtable-podcast ) on Fridays at 4pm, and corresponding videos are uploaded to our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKGauoE3k3ssNBmeCnYGH2Q/playlists?view=1&sort=da&flow=grid Contact us at info@cearts.org if you are interested in being a guest @theroundtable! Kim Carlson is an outsider artist who operates and creates within the realms of conceptual and collaborative frameworks. Outsider art is a form of art that is derived from individuals with little to no formal art instruction or knowledge. Outsider art is a gnostic art; the term gnosis refers to something that is ‘known' directly from the source of all that is and tends to have mystical qualities about it. Outsider artists are often people marginalized in Western society, misunderstood, misrepresented, and misinterpreted in and among the cultures, communities, and families, making many of them in the American and predominantly Western cultures categorized as mentally ill and/or disabled. For Kim, being an outsider artist means that she allows her spirit and intuition to guide what she creates. Artistically, this has led Kim through anime and comic book-style art to painting, mixed media, dance, written word, teaching, nursing, coaching, and Tarot card inspired psychic readings and interpretations. Kim believes the ultimate mission of the outsider artist is to awaken in themselves their authenticity, transform the world they see around them from pain and suffering to joy, love, and inspiration, and then to go out in to the world and shine with hope and light to inspire others to do the same. Kim is a true servant leader and received the 2020 Heart of Adventure Therapy Award from the Therapeutic Adventure Professionals Group. She is also co-author of the just-released book, "Adventure Group Psychotherapy." Bio from Adventure-Therapist website: Growing up in rural western Ohio, Kim developed both a love of the outdoors and a passion for helping youth. She took these with her to Columbus, Ohio where she earned a Bachelor’s in Psychology and Master’s in Social Work at The Ohio State University. Throughout her education, Kim worked in the mental health field gaining experience supporting youth with mental health needs and trauma. In this work, she realized the effectiveness of activity in engaging youth and found adventure therapy. In 1999, Kim was hired to build an adventure therapy program at Camp Mary Orton. In this capacity, the importance of mentors and a professional network were highlighted as she found herself on an “island” of adventure therapy in Ohio. Getting to know Kim Fredrich Kim Fredrich helps small business sales reps feel more comfortable and confident about having sales conversations. With this pandemic, salespeople are having an especially hard time talking to potential clients. For Kim, there's no right time like the present. Even as the future is uncertain for other business owners, Kim is building her second business which includes outbound sales for small service-based businesses and she's authored the book, “If You Can Have a Conversation, You Can Sell”. Use Questions as Unique Selling Propositions Listening is an important part of selling. It's how you are able to ask the right questions and make value propositions. Always ask open-ended and conversational questions. Don't give them the chance to stop the conversation with questions that can be answered with “no.” Raise questions in a way that the answer is useful and valuable to both of you. A lot of salespeople aren't clear on what their value proposition is. They're not aware of what will make their company better. Be clear on your value proposition and put some time and effort into crafting good questions. Have three to four questions that address the different parts of the value proposition. You can bring any of the four that is appropriate to the conversation. Before you go in-depth into the sales process, you need to make sure that your products or services are actually a good fit for the person/business you're speaking with. Be clear and be able to articulate your value proposition. For small businesses, you can talk to the owner and if you're speaking to a big company, reach out to their marketing department. The sales conversation must be tied to emotions. Don't focus on the features. Ask the right kind of open-ended questions and get them talking and listening. Let them share with you as well and in so doing, you'll be building rapport. “Using Your Unique Selling Proposition to Generate Good Sales Questions” episode resources Connect with Kim Fredrich on LinkedIn. Kim Sutton is a marketing and business automation mentor who focuses on helping small business owners get away from their businesses and back to the people and activities they love. She is also a mother of five kids, and someone who has worked to create a productive life through learning the power of knowing what to say Yes and No to. And it isn't easy. With major struggles from saying Yes too many times to everyone but herself, including in a marriage where she was marginalized and mistreated. Through those hardships, Kim has set course on a better path, which she shares openly and honestly in this episode. Key Points from the Episode with Kim Sutton: Kim is a mother of 5, including a set of twins Over the last 7 years, she’s had to figure out how to own her space and make room for both the personal and professional sides of her life This struggle has included some very dark lows and some great highs, which helps her help others create this balance and sustainability For Kim, she was overwhelmed by anxiety to the point of being constantly exhausted because she couldn’t sleep Despite being so tired, her anxiety just amped up further, making the problem worse and worse Kim does a lot of work with websites and online marketing, and she shared a good piece of advice Don’t focus on the numbers people tell you because numbers can be faked. You can tell what stories are real, so focus on the stories where you feel they’re right and real. Kim grew up with a strong sense of not being good enough, with one of her parents’ sides having means and the other not, so she saw the disparity and judgment She got her first job at 11, and always had a drive to have a job, support herself, and succeed Her mother threatened her not to attend her college graduation if Kim hadn’t secured a job before graduating Kim also felt the pressure from her first boyfriend, who she dated through college, and insisted on knowing where she was all the time, and made her move to New York after graduation She knew she needed to break up with him when she found out she was pregnant, so they got married and stayed together for 8 years They had moved to Ohio in that period, and she left him with two sons and no job or money The situation with the marriage was so bad before she left, with her husband taking her car keys and forcing Kim to walk their older son to school in the middle of Winter with sub-zero wind chill Kim took her kids, and got a job at Chipotle to make ends meet It was nothing like the kinds of jobs she had before, but she realized you have to suck it up and do what you have to do sometimes, regardless of what your pride or past tells you about it In that period, she met her current husband They continued to struggle as her husband lost his job, so Kim started a side business as a virtual assistant (VA) to help support the family This kicked off Kim’s struggle with how to say “No” to anyone she met or any request that came through Some people take advantage of this, when they know you’ll never turn them down, and others don’t realize you’re agreeing to things you don’t have the space to take on That struggle drove Kim’s anxiety but also is the teacher for what she’s gained in her self-understanding and realizing how to value herself She said, clearly, she does not want to “Oh well” life Kim had started lots of projects, but never finished any of them as she kept jumping to the next idea or request This is something she calls Chronic Idea Disorder, and is the basis of the book she’s working on Kim has had more than one struggle with extreme anxiety The first battle started with her first business in 2005 (which ended in 2010) She had a full time job at the time, and had to wake up at 5:30 each morning to work her 9-hour-a-day day-job, and then got home and worked on her online business until 3am She had a thyroid issue at the time, too, so the lack of sleep and stress made this worse In 2008, she checked herself into a mental health hospital, who never really dug into her sleep issues and just gave her medication In January 2015, she had her twins, and spent the next 18 months going 20-22 hours a day, non-stop It wasn’t just about the twins as her husband was very involved in their care, but largely driven by her work and her chasing of everything – the Facebook groups, the opportunities, etc And yet, there wasn’t enough money to make ends meet despite that hustle Rewinding a few years, her step-brother died, with it being an open investigation, but appearing to be suicide As an entrepreneur, he was stressed and overloaded and felt he couldn’t turn to anyone, and Kim feels that no one should be in this position So in 2016, finding herself in a similar place, she told her husband, who listened and was there for her to find help She was praying at one point, seeing monsters filling her mind, then seeing a bright white light and an angel wing appear, clearing the monsters out, and she had the best night’s sleep she could remember The next morning, she found something one of her kid’s made for her with an angel wing on her desk despite it being put away somewhere else That was such a clear sign to Kim from God that she had to say no, clear things away and sleep rather than continuing to break up or de-prioritize her sleep for everything else This is where her change came from, starting with sleep, and making more space by saying no to things like texting her clients over the weekend She realized over the course of a year, she only ate dinner with her family 10 times, including the 6 other birthdays in the house, which was a real wake up for her If we have needs, we need to let people know what we expect. This is our personal responsibility, or we should not expect to have what we want or need in life She mentioned a pivotal book in her life, Worthy, by Nancy Levin One thing she realized is that she felt she wasn’t worthy to spend money if she wasn’t the money maker in the family, which she says a lot of women feel in their marriage Kim reapplied many can also feel that when serving someone else in a client relationship, which leads to devaluing yourself There are so many ways we can give back to our community without giving away our 1-on-1 time She asked how long do we give ourselves to beat ourselves up after we’ve messed up? Or how long do we get down? What’s healthy here? It’s about taking responsibility for your life, making promises to yourself, but then keeping them This process has taught Kim personal responsibility and accountability Links: Website: TheKimSutton.com Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn Pinterest YouTube Subscribe to The Do a Day Podcast Keep Growing with Do a Day Get Bryan's best-selling first book,Do a Day, which is the inspiration for this show and can help you overcome your greatest challenges and achieve in life. (Kim - Floral Art) In this episode, I had the honour to have Kim as my guest. She shared with me her interest in floral art as her hobby. Living art can create beautiful masterpieces that doesn't only look good for the eyes, but also might smell very pleasant. Kim has transformed her floral art over the years to give that little Kim magical touch. She found interesting ways to include random items to the floral art the enhance the presentation of her work. She also gave a little tip that can be pretty helpful for those who might be interested in picking up this hobby. She said that dome flowers have shorter stems and a cool trick to make it longer while still feeding the flower, is to remove the stem and replace it with a wooden toothpick. The wooden tooth pick would absorb the water and carry it to the flower. For Kim, where there's a will there a way. J, 29, recently broke up with a long-term partner, and is looking for someone — anyone — to cozy up with before it gets cold. "I'm not really concerned with finding the 'perfect person' to spend the rest of my life with right now," J tells Bustle. "I’m just looking for someone I can chat with when I feel lonely, who wants to hang out, cook, and go rollerskating before it snows." With no IRL meet-cutes in her future, J has been active on several different dating apps. While cuffing season starts in late fall traditionally, this year all bets are off. With many states restricting social gatherings, singles may feel extra, well, single. And according to several daters, quarantine mixed with cold weather means higher stakes and different standards — earlier than usual. According to Shula Melamed, MA, MPH, and relationship coach, traditional "cuffing season," or finding a date to shack up with through winter, is historically brought on by the threat of cold weather. "The cold affecting your emotions can make you less motivated to socialize and get out," Melamed tells Bustle. "You find yourself in hibernation mode and not focused on creating novelty or new experiences for yourselves. You might also settle for a less than thrilling relationship because you want to be snuggled down." Meredith Golden, dating coach and dating app expert, says there's extra pressure for singles to find someone before the weather gets too cold this year — even if it's not their ideal partner. "In non-COVID times, a single who started out the winter thinking they were happy watching Netflix alone had the option to change their mind midseason," Golden tells Bustle. "COVID is taking this flexibility off the table for many." And for those who don't feel comfortable dining out, going on dates may not be an option until the spring. Pre-pandemic, it wasn't uncommon to fantasize about dating someone with a cool-sounding job, fun friends who get along with yours, and a penchant for international travel. But Kim, 25, tells Bustle that coronavirus has changed who and what she's looking for in a cuffing season courtship — which makes her pre-season pickings more pressing than ever. "I used to only to date older men because they have nicer pads and more money, so we can travel and go out," she tells Bustle. "Now, I'm open to dating someone younger, even someone that's in school, because we're just going to be lying in bed." For Kim, the number-one priority is comfort. She's swapping going-out dresses for staying-in sweats and Instagram for Instacart. At the end of the day, she needs someone she can relax with indoors. "I care less about how [we] look [on] social media," she says. "I just want someone to chill with." Logan Ury, director of relationship science at Hinge, says that quarantine has led to self-reflection for many singles. "The pandemic has created an unprecedented opportunity for people to assess their dating patterns and behaviors and develop new ones," Ury tells Bustle. "After months of quarantining alone, people who used to feel unrushed about their love lives now want to find a relationship." According to Ury, 69% of Hinge users are more thoughtful about the type of people they're looking for. Although J isn't prioritizing starting a serious relationship, she believes establishing a strong intellectual connection is more important than ever. "Vibing with someone was a big deal before, but it’s crucial now," J says. "The only new folks coming through my door are people whose personality makes me want to kiss them. We need to vibe when it's just the two of us, alone at home." Although quarantine's emotional intensity may be inspiring singles to shack up, the cuffing pre-season training frenzy can also be sparked by the fear of contracting COVID. Kenna, 26, says social distancing has made her and her new hookup buddy “exclusive” by default. "This pandemic has forced us to be effectively 'monogamous' to ensure everyone says safe," Kenna tells Bustle. "We're not seeing other people for health and safety, not because we want to be in a 'serious, committed relationship.'" While the pair enjoys watching movies and hooking up, Kenna says they have no intention of formally defining the relationship — ever. "It's nice to have someone to hang out with during this bizarre time," Kenna says. "That's all we're both looking for."

Kim started in late August of 2017 after purchasing Bookkeeper Business Launch. Four days later she registered her business name and closed her first client, who later on became her husband. [3:00] Kim had been in the banking industry for 16 years and knew that there was definitely a need for bookkeepers in business. When Kim’s husband decided to start his trucking business, Kim made the choice to start her own bookkeeping business at the same time. [4:15] Kim currently has 8 active clients. There are always ups and downs in the business, and clients come and go. She mainly focuses on transportation due to her insider view of the industry. [6:05] Kim always had the desire to open her own business, but she never really knew what she wanted to do. The high costs of most business models made them prohibitive. When she discovered the idea of bookkeeping, it made a lot of sense given her background and experience. Time-freedom is the word Kim would use to describe the idea of running her own business. [9:30] Retail banking is extremely time intensive, and Kim felt like she wouldn’t be able to go much further in the industry without sacrificing more of her time. Instead of just working more, she wanted to find a way to make more money while working less. [11:20] Sticking to her niche was one of Kim’s first challenges. Many of the clients she initially took on were not the right fit because they were either too small or not appropriate. It can be hard to say no to a client that wants to work with you, but sometimes it’s necessary. [14:50] Kim’s husband has been a very valuable insider who has helped shape her marketing and how she finds clients for her business. [16:05] Take your time as you go through the learning process. While you’re working your way through it, try to put processes in play that will make your life easier. In a lot of ways, time-freedom is a double-edged sword. It’s all too easy to do work that doesn’t actually build your business. Busy work is the work we do to avoid the work we really need to do. [19:00] The biggest challenge today for Kim is that if her business continues to grow, it’s going to take up more of her time unless she hires someone. The trouble is she isn’t sure if she wants to manage people again. [20:35] For Kim, success means the ability to do what she wants to do and having the means to do it. Reaching true financial security is when she would define success. Given that definition of success, Kim doesn’t really need to take on more clients. [22:50] One of the best aspects of the business for Kim has been the option of working as many hours as she wants. In terms of capacity, Kim could probably take on another 3-4 clients without eliminating the time-freedom that she values so much. At this point, she should focus on finding quality clients and upgrading her existing client base. [26:40] When Kim hits a milestone, she takes a moment to enjoy her achievement but also look towards the next goal. She has to realize the pressure is off her. She can shape her business so that it fits her goals instead of doing things to generate an income. [30:50] Paying off her mortgage and becoming debt free is one of Kim’s major goals. The other question is how does she want to spend her time when she’s retired. When Kim thinks about her goals, she always sees herself with other people and how she can help and serve them. To serve others, we have to serve ourselves. [36:30] Whether or not you have team members, your business is a system. Systems are even more important than a list of clients. Once you define your processes and efficiencies, it pays off continuously over time. Start out where you are and map out your processes, and then think about how you can improve them. Processes revolve around your client; if they don’t, then why would you do it? [42:15] You can gain a tonne of momentum and leverage in your business by hiring a virtual assistant. We think we need a big team that comes with a lot of commitment but it’s not necessary. You can take on a VA for only a few hours a week, and it can completely change your business. Before you hire a VA, you need to have your processes designed first. [47:10] Since Kim works in the transportation niche, she has an opportunity to create a course that could help teach her potential clients how to grow their business. When they develop and grow, they could become Kim’s ideal clients. [48:30] Before working on a new business idea, it’s good to vet the idea and make sure it’s worth your time and effort. If someone else is already doing something similar, that’s a good sign. Don’t just take someone’s word that they will buy your idea. It doesn’t mean anything until someone is willing to open their wallet and give you their money. Before taking the leap on a new idea, make sure that the resulting business fits into your vision for your life. [51:50] For new ideas, always start with the market side of things. Once that’s in place, always undersell and overdeliver. Mentioned in this Episode: Home Time Bookkeeping
Kim Coates is a Canadian-American actor who has worked in both Canadian and American films and television series. He has worked on Broadway portraying Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire and in the lead role of Macbeth performed at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. He also starred as Alexander “Tig” Trager in the FX series Sons of Anarchy. Key Points 1. Follow Your Bliss Life is too short to live every day doing things that you dislike. If you love something, do it, end of story. If you want to be an actor, act. If you want to be a musician, play music. If you want to start a business, do it! Don’t let anyone or anything hold you back from pursuing what you love. Follow your bliss, and the rest will fall into place. 2. Be Willing to Wait Until You Are Ready Once you have committed to a path, whether it is business, acting, athletics etc. be willing to wait until you are ready to take the big leap. For Kim, he continued to master his craft of acting on stage for 8 years before he took the leap into television. For you, it may mean working an apprenticeship for a few years before you start your business, it may mean playing local gigs with your band for a few years before you quit your job and try touring. Don’t rush things. Excellence takes time. 3. Failure is Not an Option Success is simple, you simply have to remove the possibility of failure from your mind. When failure is no longer an option, success is inevitable. Once you have started following your bliss and prepared yourself for the leap, it is time to burn your boats and leave yourself no choice but to succeed. Whether that is moving to a new city, quitting your job, or investing all of your dispensable cash into a business, when you give yourself no way out, you will succeed. 4. Keep Your Head on Straight Once you start to see success, it is easy to let it go to your head. You have to be diligent in making sure that you keep your head on straight. Stay away from the masses living the rock star lifestyle who will end up ruining their career within a few short years. If you want longevity in whatever path you select, you have to continually grow and avoid things that are detrimental to your public image and success. 5. A Real Man Listens More and Talks Less You were given two ears and one mouth for a reason, use them in that proportion.
In this episode of the Waterboys podcast, Thabi and Kim discuss moments in each other’s lives that stood out to them in 2019. In a year where they both moved down to Wellington, Thabi’s year was marked by alleged drunk adventures, and the unfortunate realisation that he now has adult responsibilities that Mum and Dad can’t solve. For Kim, the importance of doing what you love, and the effects of a second concussion were present throughout 2019. This is the last episode for 2019 from the Waterboys, so a big thank you to anyone who’s listened to an episode. Stay hydrated, and catch you in 2020! Kim talks about her recent full year around the sun of loss 'celebrations'. For Kim, she talks about the anniversaries she honored for her mom and her ex-husband. You may be about to approach your first anniversary of a loss, coming up on your 20th or want to hear how to cope. This episode, Kim talks about her approach to honoring it and noticing the stuck feeling of how to continue to heal.
Kim Harm's 19 year old son, Eric, looked like he had everything going for him. He was a smart, talented jazz pianist who had just finished his first semester at Columbia University. He had been elected to the student council, was getting excellent grades and had a girlfriend he adored. Two weeks into the second semester, his girlfriend broke up with him, and 45 minutes later, he died by suicide. Kim and her family, as well as so many friends, were devastated. For Kim, this was the third suicide in her family. Her depression worsened as well as she struggled in her grief. She had now lost her mother, nephew and son to suicide. The guilt and second-guessing were overwhelming. Now, 11 years later, she has been able to put those thoughts to rest, and replace them with a desire to help others. She is working to educate as many people as possible about depression, mental illness and suffering. After working a career as a dentist, she saw the effects of mental illness in the dental office, and felt that she could make a difference. Through her work as an ADA spokesperson and consumer advisor, she has been featured on The Today Show, CNN, Fox News, NPR and other network affiliates. She has been quoted in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, USA Today, Chicago Tribune as well as many others. Some of her published articles will be attached below. Dr. Harms writes and speaks nationally to dentists who have a much higher rate of suicide than the general population. Many dentist and other professionals struggle to seek help for mental illness for fear of what colleagues or patients might think. She attacks those ideas head on. Kim also discusses how to help staff members and patients who are suffering as well. Grieving, suffering people will come in as patients every day. Kim works to help offices understand how to work with those who suffer to make them feel as comfortable as possible in an environment that can cause anxiety. Good People, This week’s episode of The Truth Prescription brings great conversation and new insights into the future. I speak with Kim Allen, psychic and astrologist. She’s been called the “Human GPS system,” as she helps people figure out where their lives are headed. She’s an old family friend of mine. Let me tell you, from my experience, you really need to listen to this person. Throughout our talk, Kim shares her story about how she came to work as a psychic and astrologist, including figuring out her own path, adjusting with reality as she goes. She discusses the importance of identifying your dreams and goals but acknowledging the realities that surround those goals. With this, she’s learned what her personal passions are, who she works best with professionally, and the value of differentiating between reality and non-reality. Host: Dr. Seku GathersGuest: Kim AllenResources:Kim Allen’s WebsiteInstagram[03:18] Personal Truth: As a child, Kim was told that she could do anything she wants. As an adult, she’s learned that that is just not the truth. No matter how enthusiastic her mom was about it, it’s just not reality. Kim realized that she had to identify her own personal strengths and passions, find a way to combine them and figure out what’s available in that intersection. Without this direction, many people get lost and expect more doors to be open than there are actually are. For Kim, she realized that many doors were closed to her. She believes that there are doors open for everyone, but you still have to approach those doors with reality—the truth—in mind. [8:23] Professional Truth: Jodi regularly works with groups of psychics and astrologers. Both of these groups cultivate vastly different cultures: one was very closed off, individualized; the other was very open and provided lively conversations. Through these interactions with these different groups of professionals, Jodi realized that she actually thrives in an open, conversational, “mental” environment. She prefers to work with people who are able to base themselves in reality, defining truths from untruths. [21:09] Yes or BS:The Golden State Warriors will win the NBA Championship in 2020? Donald J. Kim talks about his zero waste focus using items that are often discarded from the kitchen or using ingredients more than once. He talks about making garnish out of citrus pulp, called Pulp Confection. Ben talks about the process of creating a cocktail menu for his newest establishment, The Manchester. Trick Dog has a great cocktail menu, what makes the experience fun is going there because they have so much fun making a cocktail menu. Folklore about the Ward 8, named after a district in Boston, famous but not super famous, reminds Kim of Ben. When Ben came into the Bar Chloe when Kim worked there asked for a Ward 8 and he didn’t know what it was. It’s a fun drink with roots in classic cocktail making. Discovered it in Imbibe, the famous Jerry Thomas cocktail book. It’s a rye cocktail with fresh orange, fresh lemon and grenadine. An exciting cocktail because of its history. Ward 8 comes out of Boston, where local politicians wanted people to consume more vitamins. In 1898, where the Ward 8 was created at a bar called Lock Ober, in honor of the election of a local politician. The drink was also theorized to have been created at the Quincy House. As well as other legends of its origin. The Ward 8 is categorically a sour, a cocktail with citrus in it. And in this case, it’s orange and lemon. The orange makes it less of a citrus bomb. And then there’s grenadine, classically known to most of us as the key ingredient in Shirley Temples, but grenadine is actually made from pomegranate, not cherries. As a kid, we were all rock stars with our Shirley Temples. This drink covers a lot of different types of cocktails. It has classic cocktail roots, it’s a sour and it’s a fun drink. Made from rye whiskey. Recipe out of Imbibe: 3 ounces of rye, 3/4 oz fresh lemon, 3/4 ounces fresh orange, 3/4 ounce fresh pomegranate. Always served on ice, want to keep it balanced. Maraschino cherry, sprig of mint and an orange slice to garnish, for Ben. For Kim’s recipe, 3/4 ounce orange, 1/4 ounce lemon, 3/4 syrup or 1/2 syrup, splash of grenadine, 2 ounces rye, and up, not on the rocks. Up means chilled, diluted and then strained into a glass of your choosing. The guys talk the history of rye, killed during Prohibition, and reborn in the last few decades. Check out Nomad or Varnish for a great Ward 8! And Triforium and the Streamliner!
Kim Buck, LPC and CSAT, joins the show, to share her excitement in the concept of prodependence, and her own experience in integrating it within the treatment of her own clients. Kim has over 15 years of clinical experience as a therapist and works in multiple modalities depending on the clients needs. As the Clinical Director at Family Strategies Counseling Center in Arizona, she runs treatment programs for hundreds of people. She and Rob also talk about the difference between the codependence and prodependence models, and the changes she has seen firsthand in her treatment centers when implementing this model. TAKEAWAYS: [2:31] Kim heard about the concept of prodependence and was an early adopter, using it in her own practice. The concept of codependency helped in her own recovery, however there were concepts in the model that she found shaming and blaming towards the partner experiencing betrayal. Prodependence addressed those issues for her, and she aligned with it due to how it lessens the blame of the betrayed partner. [8:02] Kim started rewriting some of the curriculum for the partners to integrate the prodependency model. She now has three active prodependence groups for partners of sex addicts, and they learn how to take care of themselves and set boundaries in this time of crisis. [11:56] The first goal of Kim’s work is to help them sort through the mess of their partner’s actions, and offer them support and hope. If they need the additional work, it will come organically. However, oftentimes in the early stages of treatment, people just need support and understanding while they are in crisis mode. [17:34] Prodependence invites the addict to look in the mirror and not blame the other partner for their actions. It increases the chance that a betrayed partner will come back and question what they did in the past, creating a mutually agreed upon opening to explore and grow. [22:45] For Kim, she had some fundamental issues with some of the concepts of codependency, and found that prodependency served to depathologize rather than pathologize. It removes the idea that the partner has an illness that is causing the partner to act out, and instead understands that most often they are just trying their hardest to solve a problem dragging their life down the drain. [28:01] The goal of codependency which is self care and detachment is valid and necessary, but trouble comes in when blame is placed on the partner and sees them as part of the problem. They are trying to manage the crisis and the craziness.” “They are not trying to fight through a label or diagnosis when they walk through our door.” “We don’t make someone wrong, we make them right.” “Find another partner of an addict who doesn’t feel crazy.”
Kiwi, record-setting, marathon open-water swimmer KIM CHAMBERS is courageous AF, photo by director Kate Webber Kim Chambers Record-setting, marathon open-water swimmer Kim Chambers (www.kimswimsfilm.com) from New Zealand, has conquered great odds to be here. Still very much in recovery mode from yet another life-threatening medical setback, she came on to share valuable lessons from her story of perseverance, resilience and hope. It was a grave injury and severe depression that took Kimberly Chambers to the water. This week she was the first New Zealand woman to be inducted into the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame. (And, let me be clear, Kim was a bad swimmer when she started on this journey in her early thirties.) Her swims have taken her around the world, along the way raising $1.7 million for veteran organization. For Kim, these swims are not simply athletic events, they are journeys of the self, stretching her mind and her body and her spirit. Among many notable achievements, she is the first and only woman to swim through a 30 mile stretch of ocean populated with the largest concentration of great white sharks in the world. No wet suit. No shark cage. To learn more, listen in and be sure to check out the award winning documentary, KIM SWIMS, capturing her story, and available now on iTunes, Amazon, Vimeo. What does success truly look like in your eyes without comparing it to others? In what ways does your business enrich the lives of your clientele? Can you allow your business to act as an extension of yourself and the entiriety of your being? Amongst the flow of wine, She Did it Her Way dives into these questions at the Boss Dinner with a variety of successful female entrepreneurs. The event is a celebration of powerful women with a goal of creating strong networks aimed at promoting and uplifting one another. Today, we meet Debra Giunta, Kim Bosse, Stacie Brown, Jessica Zweig, and Liz Traines. Debra is the founder and director of Design Dance, a community-based educational dance organization. Design Dance's classes are taught by well trained dancers who teach routines that have an elevated performance aspect to them. However, Debra wanted her classes to be available to students of all income levels, in order to provide easy access to a high quality dance education. Today they serve 1,500 students annually with over 120 classes a week. Along her entrepreneurial road, her greatest epiphany and daily practice is learning to find and be happy with her own version of success. An exercise that keeps her in this mindset is 90-Day projects and goals geared towards growing her business and herself. By having these short term goals, she increases her productivity and it allows her feel accomplished on her own terms. Another boss lady learning to thrive on her own terms is Jessica Zweig, founder of Cheeky Chicago and The SimplyBe Agency. Jessica began her self discovery after she started her first business, Cheeky Chicago; an online lifestyle magazine for women. After having to take a month off of work to recover from a sinus surgery, she entered into a deep depression. She had invested so much of herself into her business that when she had to stop, she felt as though she had lost herself and her purpose. It was after an emotional breakdown on a park bench that she bounced back and regained clarity. She had looked down at a tattoo on her wrist from years ago that said, 'Simply Be, Girls can See it'. It reminded her to be okay with wherever and whoever she was in her life, and to live authentically. From there she was able to rebuild herself seperately from her business, so it wouldn't define her. It also led to the creation of her second business, The SimplyBe Agency, which helps turn budding entrepreneurs into creative leaders by helping them create digital content to cultivate audiences and make an impact. Stacie Brown, Managing Director of Carver Peterson Consulting, helps new entrepreneurs as well by giving new entrepreneurs direction, how to drive revenue, building a staff, along with other business counseling. One thing she prides herself on with her business is creating a healthy work environment built off of trust and transparency. By building a business culture with these pillars at its core, it creates a working environment where everyone feels comfortable engaging and communicating with one another in a professional and constructive way; whether it be about the good, the bad, or the ugly. With this open communication, she is also able to make better decisions as a leader, and effectively solve problems to benenfit the company and associates. Kim Bosse, owner and co-founder of Birch Road Cellar, is learning the same thing and in different capacities. Birch Road Cellar is an event space for members of their club to throw gatherings. The intimate space is homey enough to host small get-togethers between friends or larger events such as the Boss Dinner. For Kim, one of her best business decisions, but also achallenge, is delegating and tailoring areas of her business to fit her strengths and weaknesses. While as an owner this tactic is best for certain tasks, it can keep her complacent and too comfortable. She keeps herself evolving by taking control of sales or pitching to potential members. Admitting that sales isn't her strong suit, at some point there has to be growth, and she likes interacting with potential members, and evaluating if they are a right fit herself. By getting comfortable with the uncomfortable in her business, Kim has taken this approach with her personal life, too. She actively tries to say 'yes' to things that may not make sense or is responsible, but wants to take that chance in order to learn and have that experience. Liz Traines, founder of Liz Traines Coaching, went on a similar journey as she transitioned from the monotony of the corporate world to the freedom of entrepreneurship. Now a career and lifestyle coach, she focuses on helping other women find a career that they love. A veteran to the She Did it Her Way Podcast, we previously heard how Liz spent years living the life she was told, growing in the finance world, and becoming what other people deemed 'successful'. But that path was not her truth, and when a stranger at a New Year's Eve party pointed it out, she was shaken from her trance. She then spent a year living outside her comfort zone, traveling, and practicing self care. It still took her a while to finally leave her corporate job, but when she did became confident, and felt in control of her life. Soak up this jam-packed episode as you hear more about these amazing women! In this episode you will... Learn how to create a platform and business that motivates others towards success Find joy in achieving short term goals and how to rebuild your life and career around that Start to be your own problem-solver in your business Know how to build a productive, trusting, and open work culture Begin to find fulfillment in your own version of success Figure out how to establish yourself as a boss while keeping a positive relationship with her team INSIGHTS "If you want to be profitable, you really need to talk to your client...Take the leap, go meet with a client...go work with someone so you can have an experience that teaches you what people actually need and want and what they'll actually pay for..." -Debra Giunta "When you don't have a boss, you're constantly defining your own success. And I think we are bombarded with versions of success that look like something we might want. And sometimes even when I think I have reached a point of success that I have defined for myself, I see someone else's point of success and I'll compare myself to them. So I think it's really about taking those moments throughout the day to re-center yourself and refocus on where you're at." - Debra Giunta "When you set short term goals, what you force yourself to do is to really focus...and you're like, this is where I'm at...and I'm on this ride, and it's a sprint, and in 90 days I'm going to make a new goal." -Debra Giunta "There's something to be said about having corporate structure that provides you with resources but it's pretty fun when you think through the problem, solve [it], and execute on the problem yourself." -Stacie Brown "There's skillsets as an owner that are different than an employee; [you can't be] afraid to be humble, to ask for help, and seek out the support system that can really make you better. And frankly, that's just letting your guard down and being vulnerable with the things you don't know." -Stacie Brown "I'm [my staff's] boss first, and their friend second, and that's been a shift in mindset...and I think I'm finding the balance between really loving my team and knowing that they love me too, but at the end of the day they respect me. It is an intentional practice everyday, and that was a very, very hard lesson for me to learn." -Jessica Zweig RESOURCES Design Dance Instagram Design Dance Facebook The SimplyBe Agency Instagram The SimplyBe Agency Facebook Carver Peter Consulting Instagram Carver Peterson Consulting Twitter Liz Traines Coaching Instagram Liz Traines Coaching Facebook Birch Road Cellar Twitter Birch Road Cellar Facebook The Man in the Arena by John Bogle The Vanishing Neighbor by Marc J. On this episode, Kim shares how he accomplishes this. Kim’s bio: Kim Scott Heinle is the Assistant General Manager for Customer Service & Advocacy with SEPTA, the public transit organization for Southeastern Pennsylvania. SEPTA has been in business since 1964, and Kim has been with the organization for 33 years. His goal is to empower employees at all levels to meet and exceed customer expectations. Further thoughts from Kim on increasing employee engagement and enhancing the workplace culture: “Public Sector organizations need a new approach to business and it starts with understanding why we are here in the first place. Building a SEPTA Customer Service Culture (BASCSC) is now in the fabric of who we are. It’s the starting point for understanding the link between highly motivated employees and their ability to deliver amazing service to our riding customers and non-riding customers.” You’ll discover: A unique idea Kim uses at SEPTA to create a more engaging workplace. How SEPTA leads the industry by using social media in its everyday operations. A brief yet fascinating history of modern metro-area transportation. KIM MAGNUSSON! For Kim leverer her et dybt indblik i dansk filmhistorie. I ér verdens bedste filmredaktion. Og hav så ellers en rigtig god fornøjelse! Med venlig hilsen, Casper, Jesper & Kim.
Diva Tech Talk interviewed Kimberly Kaminski, Vice President of Global Marketing for rapidly-growing TMaxSoft, a 20-year old worldwide software innovator focused on infrastructure and data modernization to support digital business. Kim’s rich technology marketing career spans both Fortune 500 companies and emergent technology innovators. Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, TMaxSoft (www.tmaxsoft.com) offers enterprise solutions to empower and modernize IT infrastructures, and dynamically drive competitive advantage. Kim graduated Northern Illinois University in journalism with an emphasis on advertising. She began her journey, as a writer/producer for a post-operative medical products manufacturer. “The job was perfect for me because it allowed me to pursue my love of science, while also perfecting the craft of writing and learning marketing.” Having “cut her teeth” in marketing, Kim then moved into advertising for several years including a stint in the tech practice for J. Walter Thompson (https://www.jwt.com/). Then she went to Texas Instruments (www.ti.com) as marketing communications manager. “It was at TI where my marketing career took off,” Kim said. She was then recruited for Novadigm (later acquired by Hewlett Packard: www.hp.com ) and “I have been in the software industry ever since!” From Novadigm, Kim moved to CA Technologies (www.ca.com), the 5th largest enterprise software company in the world. “It was an exciting time to join CA, who was trying to move from being a very technical company to being a customer-facing, market-driven company.” Kim spent 11 years at CA, evolving into progressively greater leadership roles, and eventually became Vice President of Field Marketing within CA’s Northern Division sales organization. Then she went to Avocent (acquired by Emerson Electric - http://www.emerson.com/en-us ) in Huntsville, Alabama, as Director of Global Field Marketing. After that, she became Vice President, Marketing for privately-held Vision Solutions for 2 years (https://www.visionsolutions.com/) leading their global marketing team. Subsequently, Kim worked for Infogix (http://www.infogix.com/) in global marketing leadership for 2 years, before moving to her current role at TMaxSoft. Kim is having fun in her current job. “My personal mission is to grow the marketing discipline, grow the team” at TMaxSoft, she said. “We’re working to create, within the company, a culture of customer-focused marketing.” To achieve her success, Kim believes three key personal characteristics are essential: patience, tenacity, and a sense of humor. She stressed “it takes a lot of patience, diplomacy, tact, and tenacity to go around and through roadblocks that inevitably always pop up in business. When you’re leading a team, it’s the leader’s responsibility to help the team navigate those roadblocks, to make their jobs fun and easy. “ For Kim, being a woman in tech has affected her “in both positive and not-so-positive ways.” She shared a story from her early career where a male manager felt that women should be exclusively at home, raising kids. “Instead of reacting negatively, I decided to just do a great job, and prove him wrong. And I ended up becoming one of his most trusted employees!” Kim is thrilled she has had the chance to mentor younger women. “This has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career,” she said. To her, “it’s important for every woman not to measure themselves against another woman. You must find what works for you. That can take many different forms throughout your career.” Kim’s three key pieces of advice, especially for tech marketing leaders are: Stay humble and be willing to learn from everyone. Continue to study hard. “Learn how to talk the language of development,” and additionally “speak the language of business.” Remember that “marketing has the responsibility to be the headlights of the business; really going out there, shining the light on the markets and the customers.” One precept Kim tries to live by is “everything in moderation.” She advises to keep things simple. Along the way, Kim worked with a coach at the Master of Business Leadership Program (http://www.masterofbusinessleadership.com/), which focuses on helping leaders find their unique value and capitalize on that. “That was pivotal for me to realize that no one was standing in my way, except for me.” One of Kim’s favorite current quotes is “You are a lot more powerful than that which scares you.” Finally, for Kim, “my faith is my anchor in my work, and in my life. We are called to love one another, and this applies to all facets of my life, including working relationships.” To sum it up, Kim says: “I approach everything with a spirit of kindness, loving what I do, and loving the people I am with.” For the full blog write up, make sure to check us out on online at www.divatechtalk.com, on Twitter @divatechtalks, and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/divatechtalk. Kim Walsh-Phillips - Direct Response Social Media Kim has helped her clients bring in more than ONE BILLION DOLLARS by increasing revenue through direct response social media marketing. Kim is CEO of Elite Digital Group. Her business focuses on producing campaigns that layers marketing channels, not solely focusing on digital. For Kim its results that count. It's all about return on investment. And she has a simple formula that she uses to get results… Direct response + social media + full customer life cycle = results She co-authored “No B.S. Guide to Direct Response Social Media Marketing” with Dan Kennedy. Kim also delivers the very popular daily podcast “Facebook Sales Strategies”. (The book is available on Amazon in UK http://amzn.to/2envalA or in the USA http://amzn.to/2dAXHyQ) Dan Kennedy called Kim a “sane and rational voice in a cacophony of charlatans”. Kim is married with 2 daughters and lives just outside New York City. The Moment That Changed Kim's Life Up until the moment when Kim's daughter was born, her business was living by hustling. To raise enough money for the cheques she had already sent out. Kim was dependent on whatever came in the mail that day in order to make payroll. It was living under constant stress. Constantly thinking was that going to be the week when everything falls apart. When her daughter was born, she couldn't go out and hustle. She needed to care for her daughter at home. Just then, her bank wrote to say they wouldn't cover her payroll anymore. They weren't going to allow Kim's overdraft to be her funding source. Unfortunately, that's all Kim had. She knew she needed something better, and Kim is a woman of faith. At that time a friend gave her a book. It was Dan Kennedy's No BS Direct Marketing for Non-Direct Marketing Businesses. Here's a link if you are in the UK http://amzn.to/2e6nfok or in the USA http://amzn.to/2e1TZ2H So, what changed? What is direct Response Social Media all about? She discovered, she didn't have to be the one to physically go out and hustle. She could use marketing as her hustle. She could use marketing to go out and get her new sales. She could use marketing to go into a new market. Or to position herself as the authority to get paid more. She could use marketing so that when people sat with her for a sales conversation, they already knew what she could do for them, and how much she was going to charge. If new clients understood both those things, she would not have to convince, beg, plead or chase them to get them to work with her. That book changed Kim's life. From that point forward, she was able to monetise hers and her team's time to a profit level she had never experienced before. Kim was handed that book by an accountability partner for about 15 years now. They meet fortnightly and go over their respective 14, 30, 60, 90 day goals. It keeps those things that are important moving forward. Not just urgent. When we don't have accountability we tend to focus on just urgent. The funny thing about the author of the Direct Marketing book, Dan Kennedy, hated social media. Hated it! Kim's drive saw her apply Dan's strategies to social media. The first message she got was on LinkedIn – they'd never met, but he'd seen her posts and blogs and wanted to talk to her about doing a marketing strategy. That was her first client she hadn't first met at an event, networked, where she'd pitched. He came to Kim, willing to pay top dollar. Her mantra became: Do things based on results and scale them accordingly Her favourite quote is: In God We Trust, Everyone-else Bring Data! Kim Repositioned Prospect Meetings When Kim was introduced to Dan Kennedy and direct response. Her clients were local. They were used to seeing her. They were used to getting a whole lot of advice from Kim for free. When it came to paying her, the logic was payment wouldn't be very much because here's someone willing to give her expertise for ...
