Can America See Gymnasts for More Than Their Medals?

The Experiment

Ever since Kerri Strug and the Magnificent Seven won Olympic gold in 1996, the U.S. women's gymnastics team has been a point of pride for many Americans. But over the past five years, athletes have been coming forward with allegations of widespread abuse in the sport. Former gymnasts say they were forced to train and compete with broken bones and that they were denied food. And dozens of women have testified that they were sexually assaulted by Larry Nassar, the former doctor who worked with the U.S. national team.  USA Gymnastics, the governing body for elite gymnastics in the United States, has said it's working hard to change the sport's culture, but many former gymnasts say it hasn't done enough. “We have coaches and institutions and organizations and a country, frankly, that prioritize money and medals over the bodies and souls of people,” says Rachael Denhollander, a former gymnast who was the first woman to come forward publicly with accusations against Nassar.  Now that we know the truth about how damaging elite gymnastics can be for young women and girls, should we change how we think about the sport? Denhollander says Simone Biles's decision to withdraw from several Olympic events might change how athletes see their own worth.  “That's going to entail a lot of hard conversations,” Denhollander says. “Do you have value and identity and worth outside of your gymnastics ability? If we really, truly understand that the answer to that is yes, that lays the foundation to be able to say, ‘I can't sacrifice my value, identity, the rest of my life for this one thing.'”  This week on The Experiment: When national glory comes at the expense of young women's bodies, can we still find a way to love the Olympics? This episode's guests include the Atlantic staff writer Emma Green and Rachael Denhollander, a lawyer and victims' advocate. Further reading: “The Gymnast Who Won't Let Her Daughters Do Gymnastics” A transcript of this episode will soon be made available. Please check back.  Apply for The Experiment's fall internship. Applications will be accepted through August 20, 2021.  Be part of The Experiment. Use the hashtag #TheExperimentPodcast, or write to us at theexperiment@theatlantic.com. About six months ago the parallels started forming for me between our global economic system today that creates great suffering on the scale of hundreds of millions of people with nightmarish cruelty, but also people benefiting from it looking the other way or saying "what I do doesn't matter" or "the youth will solve it". . . And the systems of slavery. Also looking for role models who changed systems of that scale. My historical knowledge of abolition and slavery was limited. You've heard guests Adam Hochschild, Manisha Sinha, Eric Metaxas, and others sharing historical background on the systems of slavery and abolition, as well as individual abolitionists. I believe we can learn from them and honor them by learning from them. Our situation is different, but on the scale of billions and we are alive to act.Today's guest, Andrés Reséndez, wrote The Other Slavery, a book on the enslavement of Native Americans, mostly by the Spanish. I knew little about it and what I did know was off. Our conversation covers the different character of the Spanish enslaving Native Americans to mine gold and silver, leading to global trade and a different character.Motivating me was to consider how future generations would look at us. Listeners may recall from, say, my conversation with Rod Schoonover, the scientist in the US State Department who described the suffering facing climate refugees in Central America. Once they cross borders, they face war atrocities. Then there is Syria and more. We can expect those numbers to increase by some estimation into the billions of climate refugees, as one of many places our system generates cruelty for our way of life, which is totally optional. We don't have to extract, exploit, and so on. I believe that there is nothing more meaningful and purposeful than to take responsibility for how our behavior affects others. What more can we do for the past than to learn from it, to avoid repeating the mistakes of exploitation and discounting where our material wealth comes from?I ask myself what I would have done then. Would I have accepted the silver?Would I have said what I did didn't matter?I have to be honest with myself because I can easily say I would do then what I today would. What do I consider right today? Can I look away from those at the receiving end of my plastic, pesticides, jet fuel, and so on?The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

There is nothing like the joy of learning something new to build momentum and get us excited about the future! One thing that’s been particularly clear during the pandemic is that this is the time to turn inward. And for successful entrepreneurs, that means that it’s time to invest in your business, and yourself. If you’re looking around and you’re overwhelmed with the vast number of options out there to spark growth, look no further than live video. The numbers don’t lie. Live video generated $60 billion (that’s billion with a “B”!) in sales in 2019. It’s a platform that’s here to stay, and it’s time to put your unique business out there for the world to see! My guest today is Raya Schwartz, owner of Flirt Wax Bar in Tampa. She opened her first business at the age of 23. By the time it was basically running itself, she was hungry for more. That’s when she decided to master live video and offer online courses. She knew she was onto something BIG when her very first course hit the six-figure mark in just a matter of days! If you’ve always thought of yourself as shy, or someone who could never put yourself out there, consider this: live-video is about connecting authentically with your audience. That means it’s not a performance. It’s just you being you. You do it every day. Here’s to being you, and sharing your beautiful soul with the world! In This Episode You Will Learn: How complexity can overrun motivation (6:25)The difference it makes when you follow your own rules 75:48)Why live video is already the next big thing (10:01)Targeting your audience in the right places (13:08)Why nobody wants perfection (15:27)A clever way to seek out your audience (16:13)Affiliates are your secret weapon (19:51)How live video builds trust (24:46)People Mentioned in this Episode:Amy PorterfieldJack CanfieldShannon DickersonConnect with Raya Schwartz:Bosses in BeautyInstagramResources: My FREE Masterclass: How to Master Zoom and Live Video Sales Like a Pro Free MasterclassBoss BabeDigital Course Academy - Amy PorterfieldBloomberg: Livestreams Are the Future of Shopping in America See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This week, Heritage's Adam Michel, explains what a "Universal Savings Account" is and how if we can get Americans on board with the idea -- President Trump would be taking a major step in replacing the entitlement culture with self made wealth. Good People, This week’s episode of The Truth Prescription brings great conversation and new insights into the future. I speak with Kim Allen, psychic and astrologist. She’s been called the “Human GPS system,” as she helps people figure out where their lives are headed. She’s an old family friend of mine. Let me tell you, from my experience, you really need to listen to this person. Throughout our talk, Kim shares her story about how she came to work as a psychic and astrologist, including figuring out her own path, adjusting with reality as she goes. She discusses the importance of identifying your dreams and goals but acknowledging the realities that surround those goals. With this, she’s learned what her personal passions are, who she works best with professionally, and the value of differentiating between reality and non-reality. Host: Dr. Seku GathersGuest: Kim AllenResources:Kim Allen’s WebsiteInstagram[03:18] Personal Truth: As a child, Kim was told that she could do anything she wants. As an adult, she’s learned that that is just not the truth. No matter how enthusiastic her mom was about it, it’s just not reality. Kim realized that she had to identify her own personal strengths and passions, find a way to combine them and figure out what’s available in that intersection. Without this direction, many people get lost and expect more doors to be open than there are actually are. For Kim, she realized that many doors were closed to her. She believes that there are doors open for everyone, but you still have to approach those doors with reality—the truth—in mind. [8:23] Professional Truth: Jodi regularly works with groups of psychics and astrologers. Both of these groups cultivate vastly different cultures: one was very closed off, individualized; the other was very open and provided lively conversations. Through these interactions with these different groups of professionals, Jodi realized that she actually thrives in an open, conversational, “mental” environment. She prefers to work with people who are able to base themselves in reality, defining truths from untruths. [21:09] Yes or BS:The Golden State Warriors will win the NBA Championship in 2020? Donald J. Trump will be reelected President? Harriet Tubman will one day be on the $20 bill? The Metro Podcast Studio will have a location in Los Angeles? Kevin Durant will come play for the Knicks? Kim Allen will have her own TV or radio show in the next 5 years?Recreational marijuana will be legalized in New York? New Jersey? 2020 will be a year of ____ for America?
