Yale professor Willie James Jennings describes the religious and cultural origins of racism. And James Lawson, considered by many as one of the architects of the civil rights movement, explains how he and other leaders came to believe that the only way to effectively desegregate the nation was through non-violent protest.Show Notes:Resources mentioned this episodeJames Lawson Full InterviewFred Gray Full InterviewWillie James Jennings Full InterviewThe Christian Imagination by Willie James JenningsBus Ride to Justice by Fred GrayPDF of Lee's Interview Notes - Willie James JenningsPDF of Lee's Interview Notes - James LawsonTranscription Link JOIN NSE+ Today! In this episode of Tiling Connect, we delve into the dynamic world of tiling and explore the intricacies of the latest standards shaping the industry. Our expert guest sheds light on the standards revolutionising how we think about tiling. Fred Gray joined LATICRETE in 1992 after more than 20 years of experience in concreting and building.Working with concrete structures and swimming pools provided an excellent background for the following many decades in the tile and stone industry. As part of his job at LATICRETE, he engaged with industry professionals and networking. The Australian Tile Council played a significant role in this engagement. Regardless of his position in LATICRETE, his work always involved sharing technical knowledge and finding solutions to job site problems, which is also a trait engrained in the ATC. As someone who enjoyed working in the technical field, Fred found it easy to implement training, deliver seminars, write technical documents and articles, review problematic jobs, and encourage compliance. When the ATC proposed the development of the current AS3958, he found a way to balance his work and personal goals.Whether you're a seasoned professional or a DIY enthusiast, this discussion offers valuable insights into achieving flawless results and staying ahead in the ever-evolving world of interior design.  Aurelia S. Browder, Rosa Parks, The 14th AmendmentOn this Anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, I speak with a Guest, Robert James of The Dexter King Memorial Baptist Church. He was a kid at the time of this Historical Event, I ask what life for him & Black people was like everyday during Segregated Times so we can understand of Living Conditions & Laws of that time.On December 5th, 1955,  Rosa Park refused her seat on the Bus to a White Passenger. A few months later, the case of Browder vs Gayle, The Famous Court Case that challenged the Segregated Laws of Racial Discrimination on Public Transportation, was underway.Months BEFORE Rosa Parks, other Black Citizens refused their seat to passengers & got arrested, One was a 15 year old name: Claudette Colvin. The main plaintiffs in the case were Aurelia S. Browder, Claudette Colvin, Susie McDonald, and Mary Louise Smith. Jeanetta Reese had originally been a plaintiff in the case, but intimidation by segregationists (including threatening phone calls and pressure from a senior police officer for whom she worked) caused her to withdraw in February 1956.Filed by Fred Gray and Charles D. Langford on behalf of four African American women who had been mistreated on city buses, the case made its way to the U.S. Supreme Court, which upheld a district court ruling that the statute was unconstitutional. Gray and Langford filed the federal district court petition that became Browder v. Gayle on 1 February 1956, two days after segregationists bombed King's house. The list of defendants included Mayor William A. Gayle, the city's chief of police, representatives from Montgomery's Board of Commissioners, Montgomery City Lines, Inc., two bus drivers, and representatives of the Alabama Public Service Commission. Gray was aided in the case by Thurgood Marshalland other National Association for the Advancement of Colored People attorneys. On June 5, 1956, the District Court ruled 2-1 that bus segregation is unconstitutional under the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. The state and city appealed, and the decision was summarily affirmed by the United States Supreme Court on November 13, 1956.In 2019 a statue of Rosa Parks was unveiled in Montgomery, Alabama, and four granite markers were also unveiled near the statue on the same day to honor four plaintiffs in Browder v. Gayle Aurelia Browder, Susie McDonald, Claudette Colvin, and Mary Louise Smith. One of those plaintiffs, Mary Louise Smith, took part in the unveiling ceremony. This is a Tribute to Mr. Robert James & ALL the ancestors who fought for Civil Rights for Black Citizens at that Time. Who was the attorney for Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King at the beginning of the Civil Rights struggle? Fred Gray, just out of law school, had made a commitment to destroy everything segregated in his home state of Alabama when he was in high school. Rosa Parks was only his second case, after Claudette Colvin, a teenager, who nine months earlier had been the first to refuse to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus and in turn inspired Rosa Park. When Rosa Parks was arrested in 1955 for violating the segregated seating ordinance, 26-year-old Martin Luther King was chosen to lead the Montgomery Bus Boycott, and 24-year-old Fred Gray also became his and the movement's lawyer. Gray's legal victory in the federal courts ended the boycott 381 days later. Fred Gray won scores of civil rights cases in education, voting rights, transportation, and health. He represented the Freedom Riders, the Selma-to-Montgomery marchers, and the victims of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study. It was a Republican and former employee of the United States Public Health Service, Peter Buxtun, who blew the whistle on the Tuskegee study. Poor black sharecroppers were led to believe they were being treated, while in reality the study recorded the progression of untreated Syphilis. In 2009 Buxtun was the events coordinator for the Republican Roundtable. He invited Fred Gray to speak - and allowed TUC Radio to attend and record the event.   The early history of the civil rights movement comes to life in this story of Fred Gray's life and education, as speaks for the first time in his life to a Republican audience - at least an audience that told him they were Republican. Fred Gray ends by saying that racism is still alive and even re—emerging in this country and makes an appeal to end it. He said this in 2009.

They were just two of the thousands of students who each year arrive in Boston for college. He, the heir to a historic ministry, she the poor small-town girl with big music dreams. In 1950s Boston, Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott met and fell in love in what became the early stages of a lifelong commitment to each other and to the civil rights movement. Their Boston story is captured in the documentary film, "Legacy of Love.” Guests: Roberto Mighty, writer, producer, and director of "Legacy of Love." Reverend Walter Fluker, the Martin Luther King Jr. Professor Emeritus at Boston University. "Legacy of Love" will re-broadcast on Thursday, January 21st at 10:30pm on GBH 2. LATER IN THE SHOW: The Montgomery Bus Boycott catapulted the young Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to leadership in the civil rights movement. History and fate linked him to Rosa Parks and to local civil rights advocates the Gray brothers — attorney Fred Gray and activist Thomas Gray. Now, niece and daughter Karen Gray Houston profiles her family's involvement in the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the movement that changed America. “Daughter of the Boycott: Carrying on a Montgomery Family's Civil Rights Legacy” is our January selection for “Bookmarked: The Under the Radar Book Club.” This was a labor of love for author Karen Gray Houston, a retired Washington, D.C. You know the story of Rosa Parks. But have you heard of Claudette Colvin? Claudette grew up in the segregated city of Montgomery, Alabama. On March 2, 1955, when she was 15 years old, she refused to give up her seat on a bus to a white passenger. Nine months later, Rosa Parks did the exact same thing. Parks, of course, became a powerful symbol of the civil rights movement. But Claudette Colvin has largely been left out of the history books. In 1956, about a year after Colvin refused to give up her seat, her attorney Fred Gray filed the landmark federal lawsuit Browder v. Gayle. This case ended segregation on public transportation in Alabama. Claudette Colvin was a star witness. This is her story.

Join us for a ‘Bonus' ArchiTreats: Food for Thought panel discussion on Stealth Reconstruction: The Untold Story of Racial Politics in Recent Southern History. This was held at the Alabama Department of Archives and History October 14, 2010. Most Americans know the basic facts and events of the modern civil rights movement, but few have a sense of how the civil rights movement actually played out in southern politics over the remainder of the twentieth century. Glen Browder's and Artemesia Stanberry's book, Stealth Reconstruction, explores how white politicians and black activists worked together quietly, practically, and bi-racially to change the South from the 1970s through the 1990s. The book features prominent Alabama political players of the past and present - including Richard Arrington, Fred Gray, Jerome Gray, Howell Heflin, Paul Hubbert, Joe Reed, and George Wallace - and includes surprising revelations about racial politics during that era. In this ArchiTreats program, a panel of Alabamians discuss this process of political change and examine how Alabama got from the continuous turmoil of the mid-twentieth century to biracial politics in the twenty-first century. In addition to co-authors Browder and Stanberry, the panel participants were moderator Tim Lennox (WAKA-TV broadcast journalist), Dr. Sharron Herron (Alabama State University political scientist), Markeshia Ricks (State Government reporter for Montgomery Advertiser), and Dr. Bill Stewart (Professor Emeritus in political science from the University of Alabama).
