Gayl Jones (1949 - present) is a prolific author celebrated for her writing about Black womanhood, slavery, and the African Diaspora. She disappeared from public life by choice until very recently, when she reappeared in words with her 2021 novel, “Palmares.”  For Further Reading: “The Best American Novelist Whose Name You May Not Know”  “She Changed Black Literature Forever. Then She Disappeared.”  “The Best American Novelist to Disappear (And Come Back) Twice” Historically, women have been told to make themselves smaller, to diminish themselves. Some have used that idea to their advantage, disappearing into new identities. For others, a disappearance was the end to their stories, but the beginning of a new chapter in their legacies. This month we're telling the stories of these women: we're talking about disappearing acts. History classes can get a bad rap, and sometimes for good reason. When we were students, we couldn't help wondering... where were all the ladies at? Why were so many incredible stories missing from the typical curriculum? Enter, Womanica. As a result, these modern-day sours have higher ABVs than more classical, malt-forward beers, and are dominated by every variety of sugary adjunct. Against that backdrop of extremes, where does a startup sour brewery fit into the industry when their flavor profiles aim for balance, nuance, and seasonal, garden inspiration instead? Wendy Gayl and Felipe Bravo of the Fox Tale Fermentation Project in San Jose, California are entering the beer market on a very small scale. Taking inspiration from their combined background in food and brewing, they hope to find a local following for their beers, and to add local fruits, vegetables, herbs, and botanicals to their releases, all applied with a gentle hand. In today's episode, we discuss brand and product development, various approaches to making farmhouse-inspired beers, and mixed-fermentation techniques. We also talk about their plans to grow from homebrewing in their Bay Area garage to opening a nanobrewery, where they will serve their unique beers alongside plated experiments in food fermentation. Let's just call it what it is - 'The Beyonce Factor'. We're at the point now where singers, athletes, entertainers, youtube stars, and so forth have hijacked the minds of millennials everywhere. As you'll discover on the show Dr. Martinelli chalks it up to a lack of being educated on the issues, and basic civics even. Beyonce’s production at the VMA Awards this past week is one of the latest examples - where dancers were circling around her and one by one, they fell to the ground, the deep red spotlights were on each dancer to change their outfits from white to bright red all to symbolize blood and cops killing blacks. 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick has willingly immersed himself into controversy by refusing to stand for the playing of the national anthem in protest of what he deems are wrongdoings against African Americans and minorities in the United States. "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color," says Kaepernick. In an interview on 60 Minutes with Australia-based correspondent Michael Usher, Barbra Streisand said that if Trump is elected, "I'm either coming to Australia if you'll let me in, or Canada." Streisand is one of many entertainers who threaten their fans with promises to leave the country - if you don't elect their candidate to office. More and more the lines appear to be blurring when it comes to where you get your news and information from AND where you get your entertainment from! Probably some of you are outraged when you hear these stories, but I want you to ask yourself the bigger question today - How does all this play into the minds of our children?
