This book discusses hagiographic, historiographical, hymnological, and theological sources that contributed to the formation of the sacred picture of the physical as well as metaphysical Jerusalem in the literature of two Eastern Christian denominations, East and West Syrians. Popa analyses the question of Syrian beliefs about the Holy City, their interaction with holy places, and how they travelled in the Holy Land. He also explores how they imagined and reflected the theology of this itinerary through literature in Late Antiquity and the Middle Ages, set alongside a well-defined local tradition that was at times at odds with Jerusalem. Even though the image of Jerusalem as a land of sacred spaces is unanimously accepted in the history of Christianity, there were also various competing positions and attitudes. This often promoted the attempt at mitigating and replacing Jerusalem's sacred centrality to the Christian experience with local sacred heritage, which is also explored in this study. Popa argues that despite this rhetoric of artificial boundaries, the general picture epitomises a fluid and animated intersection of Syriac Christians with the Holy City especially in the medieval era and the subsequent period, through a standardised process of pilgrimage, well-integrated in the custom of advanced Christian life and monastic canon. The Making of Syriac Jerusalem (Routledge, 2023) is suitable for students and scholars working on the history, literature, and theology of Syriac Christianity in the late antique and medieval periods. Catalin-Stefan Popa is Research Professor in Church History at the Romanian Academy in Bucharest. He holds his Ph.D. from Georg August University of Göttingen, Germany (2016). In 2021 he received the venia legendi (habilitation) at Karl Franzens University of Graz, Austria. He published articles, and edited volumes on Syriac and Oriental ecclesiastical history, exegesis, and literature, including the monograph Gīwargīs I. (660–680). Durham University scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery in marine geoscience, revealing unprecedented insights into the dynamics of Earth's longest-runout sediment flows. By using seabed seismographs placed safely outside the destructive paths of powerful underwater avalanches of sediment, researchers have successfully monitored turbidity currents - a natural phenomenon that shapes deep-sea landscapes, damages telecommunication cables, and transports large quantities of sediment and organic carbon to the ocean floor. The longest runout sediment flows on earth The study recorded two massive turbidity currents that travelled over 1,000 kilometres through the Congo Canyon Channel, moving at speeds of up to 7.6 metres per second. These flows lasted over three weeks and marked the longest runout sediment flows ever directly observed on Earth. This achievement provides critical new data on the duration, internal structure, and behaviour of turbidity currents, advancing our understanding of this powerful geophysical process. This breakthrough opens up new possibilities for studying one of the most significant yet poorly understood processes shaping our planet. By using ocean-bottom seismographs, researchers can now safely and effectively measure these extraordinary events in more detail than ever before. Lead author of the study, Dr Megan Baker of Durham University, said, "This multidisciplinary work brought together geologists, seismologists, and engineers to advance our understanding of powerful turbidity currents through first-of-their-kind observations using ocean-bottom seismographs. "This approach enables the safe monitoring of these hazardous events and will help us learn where and how often turbidity currents occur globally." The research team, which included researchers from Newcastle University, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research, National Oceanography Centre, Georg-August-University, Deutsches GeoForschungsZentrum GFZ Potsdam, IFREMER, Université Paris-Saclay, TU Wien, University of Hull, University of Southampton and Loughborough University, successfully used ocean-bottom seismographs - instruments that are placed on the seafloor to record seismic signals generated by the turbidity currents. This innovative approach allowed the researchers to capture detailed information on these flows without risking damage to expensive equipment, as has been the case with previous attempts. The use of these seismographs marks a major step forward in monitoring hazardous seabed events, offering a cost-effective and long-term method for studying turbidity currents and their impacts. The findings also reveal the global significance of these underwater flows. The turbidity currents studied in this research not only shape deep-sea landscapes but also play a crucial role in the transport of organic carbon and sediment to the ocean floor, with significant implications for deep-sea ecosystems and global carbon cycles. The study shows that despite substantial erosion of the seafloor, the front of these massive flows maintains a near-constant speed and duration, efficiently moving organic material and sediment vast distances to the deep sea. The study also challenges traditional models of turbidity current behaviour, suggesting that the flows can maintain a consistent speed and duration even as they erode the seabed. This finding calls for a revaluation of existing models that have been based primarily on shorter, shallower flows. François RecanatiPhilosophie du langage et de l'espritCollège de FranceAnnée 2023-2024Colloque - Indexical Dynamics : Knowing How to Keep Track of ParticularsColloque organisé par François Recanati, Professeur du Collège de France, chaire Philosophie du langage et de l'espritIntervenant(s)Taku Uchiyama, Georg-August-University, GöttingenWe often do the same thing by doing different things, while we also do different things by doing the same thing. The former is the case when we think of a particular object (place, time, people, etc.) while we move on from one context to another. For example, to think of a particular day d as time passes, we need to think of d differently, i.e., as tomorrow, today, and yesterday. Despite those differences at a local level, the thought remains the same because it depends on the same ability to keep track of d over time (Evans 1981). How can such a cognitive capacity be best understood? On the functionalist's view, it can be understood as a disposition to interact with things in ways appropriate for changing contexts. However, such an externalist's approach fails to capture the content of thoughts at issue, which is supposed to be essentially indexical. In contrast, the internalist's view does respect the content. Still, it fails to account for its indexical nature because such an account either leads to an infinite regress or amounts to be circular. This paper aims to provide a hybrid view. The view is basically internalistic because it reflects the content of indexical thoughts. At the same time, it appeals to the functional and dispositional notion of ability. The resulting view adequately characterizes the ability that underlies the indexical content of thoughts. For that aim, I first examine the externalist's approach to the ability and determine its limitations. Drawing on Perry (1986), I argue that the approach can only justify ascribing perspectival contents to the subject, not indexical ones. Second, I turn to the internalist's approach and illustrate its problem as a dilemma that intellectualists also face when they specify knowledge-how as propositional knowledge. The dilemma has the same source: the paradox of self-reference: the problem of accommodating a viewpoint into the picture observed from the very viewpoint. To overcome this problem, one needs some special representational means that represents itself without objectifying itself. So, I finally appeal to the notion of a hybrid proper name developed by Künne (1992) and Kripke (2008). According to them, indexicals constitute proper names together with contextual constituents that serve as self- referring designations. Given this idea, the ability to keep track of things amounts to the ability to apply them as a (part of) hybrid proper name. As such, it provides perspectival thoughts with indexical contents without causing the dilemma, hence the ability that can account for the indexical content of thoughts.

The city's Historic Board of Review previously recommended denying Bridger's design. Mayor Steve Tumlin expressed the need for the project to comply with city code. Bridger, an Atlanta-based developer, does not require rezoning but needs the council's approval due to the property's location in the downtown historic district. The possibility of litigation remains, but both parties expressed a willingness to negotiate. STORY 2: Wheaton ** Christian Jamar Harris, a 32-year-old man from Acworth, Georgia, was arrested on April 27 for possessing over 100 videos of Lewis Wheaton, a professor at Georgia Tech's School of Biological Sciences and the Ward 7 city councilman in Smyrna, has resigned from his position after moving out of the area he represented. Wheaton had been in the position since 2019 and announced his resignation at the Smyrna City Council's May 1 meeting, citing "happy and unexpected life circumstances." Despite moving out of the ward, Wheaton and his family will still reside in the city. The Smyrna City Council is now working on a plan to replace Wheaton before the November election when his former seat is on the ballot.Top of Form Story 3: Nurses On May 10, the Cobb County School District recognized National School Nurse Day by honoring their school nurses for their essential role in promoting student health and ensuring readiness for learning. (getting-gen…g like gun) STORY 6: Tax hike The Cobb County Tax Assessor has mailed out assessment notices, with roughly 75% of Cobb homeowners seeing their valuations increase. For some residents, this will mean an increase in their property taxes. Homeowners have 45 days to appeal if they believe their home has been overvalued. The growth means an increase in tax revenue for Cobb County, its cities, school districts and community improvement districts. The number of home sales in Cobb was down by 21.6% in April of this year compared to last April, according to the Georgia Multiple Listing Service. However, the April median sales price grew by 3.2% year-over-year. Story 7: Sentenced The Georgia state Board of Education has approved new English/language arts (ELA) standards for public schools, completing the process of abandoning Common Core. The new standards were created with input from teachers, parents, students, business leaders, and community members. The ELA standards prioritize learners and aim to give students a strong foundation for both literacy and success. The standards place a strong emphasis on fundamentals in the early grades, reflecting the importance of early literacy to all future learning. Georgia's legislature passed two literacy bills aimed in part at the "science of reading" during this year's session.…..back in a momentTop of Form Break Drake – Elon - JRM Teaser Top of Form Story 8: Fields Chicago Bears quarterback Justin Fields received his degree in consumer and family financial services from Ohio State University over the weekend. Everyday Nationalism in Hungary: 1789-1867 (De Gruyter, 2019) examines Hungarian nationalism through everyday practices that will strike most readers as things that seem an unlikely venue for national politics. Separate chapters examine nationalized tobacco, nationalized wine, nationalized moustaches, nationalized sexuality, and nationalized clothing. These practices had other economic, social or gendered meanings: moustaches were associated with manliness, wine with aristocracy, and so forth. The nationalization of everyday practices thus sheds light on how patriots imagined the nation's economic, social, and gender composition. Nineteenth-century Hungary thus serves as the case study in the politics of "everyday nationalism." The book discusses several prominent names in Hungarian history, but in unfamiliar contexts. The book also engages with theoretical debates on nationalism, discussing several key theorists. Various chapters specifically examine how historical actors imagine relationship between the nation and the state, paying particular attention Rogers Brubaker's constructivist approach to nationalism without groups, Michael Billig's notion of 'banal nationalism, ' Carole Pateman's ideas about the nation as a 'national brotherhood', and Tara Zahra's notion of 'national indifference.' Alexander Maxwell studied at the University of California Davis, Georg-August University in Göttingen Germany, and Central European University before completing his Ph.D. at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He held brief postdoctoral positions in Erfurt, Swansea, Reno and Bucharest before joining the faculty of Victoria University of Wellington, in New Zealand, where he is currently associate professor of history. His is the author of Choosing Slovakia: Slavic Hungary, the Czech Language, and Unintended Nationalism (I.B. Tauris, 2009), and Patriots Against Fashion: Clothing and Nationalism in Europe’s Age of Revolutions (Palgrave, 2014). He has published widely on Central European history, nationalism theory, and history pedagogy. He is currently researching Habsburg Panslavism. Learn more about your ad choices. What is a religious experience? Really. How does one define a religious event? Why do we keep reading from figures who report life-affirming, transformation-inducing, and worldview-shattering experiences that we, if we are honest, evoke the tension between both fascination and anxious avoidance? Today's episode may provide a life raft - though the storm approaches regardless. Tune in as Dr. William Richards, a psychologist in the Psychiatry Department of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, and Dr. John Price discuss the definition of terms such as mystic and religious events, they explore subject ranging from the early application of psychedelics in a clinical context, the current and historical government regulation of psychedelics - or entheogens, if you will - clinical examples of the transformations that many have experienced during and after the use of these medicines, current studies, the collective unconscious, the embarrassment felt by the military's attempts to use these substances, morality and entheogens, identity, the ethics of entheogens in a clinical setting, getting “high,” spiritual by-passing, the nature of nature summarized in the familiar refrain that love is underneath it all, and more. Bio: William A. Richards (Bill) is a psychologist in the Psychiatry Department of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Bayview Medical Center, a consultant/trainer at sites of psychedelic research internationally, a teacher in the Program of Psychedelic Therapy and Research at the California Institute of Integral Studies, and also a clinician in private practice in Baltimore. His graduate degrees include M.Div. from Yale Divinity School, S.T.M. from Andover-Newton Theological School and Ph.D. from Catholic University, as well as studies with Abraham Maslow at Brandeis University and with Hanscarl Leuner at Georg-August University in Göttingen, Germany, where his involvement with psilocybin research originated in 1963. From 1967 to 1977, he pursued psychotherapy research with LSD, DPT, MDA and psilocybin at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, including protocols designed to investigate the promise of psychedelic substances in the treatment of alcoholism, depression, narcotic addiction and the psychological distress associated with terminal cancer, and also their use in the training of religious and mental-health professionals. From 1977-1981, he was a member of the psychology faculty of Antioch University in Maryland. In 1999 at Johns Hopkins, he and Roland Griffiths launched the rebirth of psilocybin research after a 22-year period of dormancy in the United States. His publications began in 1966 with “Implications of LSD and Experimental Mysticism,” coauthored with Walter Pahnke. His book, Sacred Knowledge: Psychedelics and Religious Experiences was released in English by Columbia University Press in 2015 and has since been translated into four additional languages. https://hopkinspsychedelic.org/richards https://hopkinspsychedelic.org https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/home The Jung Center Houston https://junghouston.org CLASS: http://junghouston.org/program-offering-detail/?id=dfb2b6b6-4eb0-11eb-b993-02dbb43a0b10 Website for The Sacred Speaks: http://www.thesacredspeaks.com WATCH: YouTube for The Sacred Speaks https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOAuksnpfht1udHWUVEO7Rg Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thesacredspeaks/ @thesacredspeaks Twitter: https://twitter.com/thesacredspeaks Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesacredspeaks/ Brought to you by: https://www.thecenterforhas.com WATCH Get Centered https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdbeVcDXWXezYMkHJg-2duw Theme music provided by: http://www.modernnationsmusic.com

His research interests include the evolutionary significance of individual differences, social endocrinology, links of somatometric measures of the body and face with psychological traits, the evolutionary psychology of mate choice, romantic relationships and sexuality, neurostructural indicators of intelligence and cognitive ageing, behavior genetics, and life history theory. In this episode, we talk about personality, intelligence, and mate preferences from an evolutionary perspective. We start with personality, and go through the several different hypotheses for the evolutionary genetics of personality. We also discuss the literature on personality calibration, and the one on birth order effects. We refer to the limitations of personality inventories (including the Big Five), and then talk about how intelligence correlates with different indicators of robust brain development. We talk about the heritability of intelligence, and different approaches to try to identify the genes associated with it, like GWAS and GCTA. Finally, we discuss some literature on mate preferences. We talk about speed-dating scenarios, and what we can learn from them; and changes in women's sexuality across their menstrual cycle, particularly in the ovulatory phase (or the luteal phase). -- Follow Dr. Penke's work: Faculty page: http://bit.ly/309hldK Website: http://www.larspenke.eu/ ResearchGate profile: http://bit.ly/308rAPE Twitter handle: @LarsPenke Relevant articles: Approaches to an evolutionary personality psychology: http://bit.ly/305dcYb Genomic analysis of family data reveals additional genetic effects on intelligence and personality: http://bit.ly/31Kl81F Does Ovulation Change Women's Sexual Desire, After All?: http://bit.ly/2yYWAp1 -- A HUGE THANK YOU TO MY PATRONS: KARIN LIETZCKE, ANN BLANCHETTE, SCIMED, PER HELGE HAAKSTD LARSEN, LAU GUERREIRO, RUI BELEZA, ANTÓNIO CUNHA, CHANTEL GELINAS, JERRY MULLER, FRANCIS FORDE, HANS FREDRIK SUNDE, BRIAN RIVERA, ADRIANO ANDRADE, YEVHEN BODRENKO, SERGIU CODREANU, ADAM BJERRE, ŁUKASZ STAFINIAK, AIRES ALMEIDA, BERNARDO SEIXAS, HERBERT GINTIS, RUTGER VOS, RICARDO VLADIMIRO, BO WINEGARD, JOHN CONNORS, ADAM KESSEL, AND VEGA GIDEY! In the wake of the Hungarian Nobel-prize winning scientist Albert Szent-Györgyi - who said that the true cause of cancer should be looked for at the sub-molecular level - dr. Somlyai began his investigations in 1990 as a senior research fellow at the Hungarian Institute of Oncology, examining the biological importance of naturally occurring deuterium. In 1993 he established HYD Ltd. for Research and Development (now HYD LLC. for Cancer Research and Drug Development) to carry out anticancer research and drug development based on the proprietary procedure, deuterium depletion and to start drug registration. Between 1993 and 1997 he was the scientific director of HYD Ltd., from 1997 he became the CEO of the company. In 2012 he also began serving as the general director of HYD’s parent company, HYD Pharma Inc.

Psychedelic drugs such as MDMA (AKA "Ecstacy") LSD and Psilocybin (AKA “magic” mushrooms) are very likely going to be the next set of drugs after marijuana to be destigmatized and potentially legalized, not necessarily because people are "partying more", but instead largely due to research going back to the 1950s which has shown that these drugs have a significant positive effect on those with depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Psychedelics are supposedly able to disintegrate entrenched or destructive ways of thinking in people who have depression, anxiety and PTSD. And brain imaging has indeed shown that in the brains of PTSD patients who took MDMA, their primitive fear center responses shrunk while their rational thought processes overrode them — the opposite of how their brains normally function. Even Silicon Valley executives are now taking microdoses of LSD to enhance creativity and productivity (a typical dose of LSD - enough to make a person hallucinate or trip - about 10 micrograms of LSD, and a microdose is about 1/10 of that dose). Rick Doblin, founder and executive director of the , claims people who microdose feel more energetic and insightful but don't necessarily see the face of God inside their water coolers. Just as with marijuana, I suspect we will continue to see the destigmatization of psychedelics if their proven health or cognitive benefits outweigh the prejudice against them. As more scientific data emerges on these drugs, they will probably become mainstream, if not for your average person, then definitely in a controlled, therapeutic setting by licensed professionals. So if you're not in-the-know about psychedelics, you should be. Enter today's guest: Dr. William Richards. Dr. Richards (Bill) is a psychologist in the Psychiatry Department of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Bayview Medical Center, where he and his colleagues have been pursuing research with psilocybin, the active molecule in the so-called “sacred mushrooms”, for the past 16 years. His graduate degrees include M.Div. from Yale Divinity School, S.T.M. from Andover-Newton Theological School and Ph.D. from Catholic University, as well as studies with Abraham Maslow at Brandeis University and with Hanscarl Leuner at Georg-August University in Göttingen, Germany, where his involvement with psychedelic research originated in 1963. From 1967 to 1977, he pursued psychotherapy research with LSD, DPT, MDA and psilocybin at the Maryland Psychiatric Research Center, including protocols designed to investigate the promise of entheogens in the treatment of alcoholism, severe neuroses, narcotic addiction and the psychological distress associated with terminal cancer, and also their use in the training of religious and mental-health professionals. From 1977-1981, he was a member of the psychology faculty of Antioch University in Maryland. His publications began in 1966 with “Implications of LSD and Experimental Mysticism,” coauthored with Walter Pahnke. His latest book, has just been released by Columbia University Press, and is described as "the first well-documented, sophisticated account of the effect of psychedelics on biological processes, human consciousness, and revelatory religious experiences". During our discussion, you'll discover: -How Dr. Richards personally uses psilocybin and other psychedelic compounds in his own life...[6:00 & 28:20] -Why is it that research into psychedelic drugs seems to be growing in popularity, and why it waned in the first place...[7:00 & 18:00] -Whether wandering through a cow's field and picking mushrooms from dung is any different than what is being used in lab research...[22:50] -What mushrooms have to do with sacred geometry, and why the kaleidoscope colors or visions one sees when on higher doses of psilocybin are related to these geometries...[41:50] -Where you can "source" or grow your own psilocybin if you want to try it...[49:50] -How you can combine psilocybin with other compounds to either increase or decrease their effect...[52:00] -Psychedelics that Bill thinks "fly under the radar" but that more people should know about...[54:00] -And much more!
