Sometimes in life we get the chance to experience a mountaintop moment, and that's exactly what happened when I chatted with the brilliant Geneen Roth this week. Geneen wrote the landmark book Women, Food, and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything, which came out in 2010, nearly 15 years ago. A huge fan of this groundbreaking work? None other than Oprah Winfrey, so if it's good enough for Oprah, it's good enough for me. At its core, one of the central messages in Women, Food, and God is this: we often eat to fill a void or a hole for something other than food. Anytime we eat when we're not physically hungry — so, think emotional eating — we are hungry for something other than food. We are seeking nourishment from food to fill a lack of nourishment in another area of our lives. The good news, as Geneen and I discuss in today's episode? This is fixable! I am living proof, as I used to struggle with this but don't to the same degree anymore. I will probably always struggle with this to an extent, but reading Geneen's book (which I cried while reading!) ushered in a new chapter of my life where my issues with food didn't run the show. Geneen has candidly admitted that she has had food issues in the past, too, going back to age five or six. Her first diet began when she was just 11. I relate to this so much, as it was the same story for me. If you have ever eaten to fulfill an unmet need elsewhere, this conversation is for you. We must ask ourselves, Geneen writes, “What do I really want?” One's relationship with food is often directly correlated to one's relationship with themselves, and food is a mirror for how well we feel nourished in our lives. Today, Geneen helps us take the first step with an intention to heal a poor relationship with food; talks to us about why diet and restriction are not the answer to solving this issue; and shares what she's learned after the massive global reception to this book. This is by no means the only book Geneen has written, but Women, Food, and God is what we're zooming in on today. In fact, Geneen has written 10 books, and I was excited to hear her say on this episode that she's working on a new book! In addition to Women, Food, and God, Geneen has also written This Messy Magnificent Life, When Food Is Love, Breaking Free from Emotional Eating, Lost and Found, and many others. Over the past 40 years, she has helped thousands of people through her workshops and retreats and has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, The Today Show, 20/20, and The View. Geneen's books were some of the first to link compulsive eating and perpetual dieting with deeply personal and spiritual issues that transcend food, weight, and body image. She believes, as I do, that the way to transform our relationship with food and our body is to be kind to ourselves, not punishing. Take a listen to our conversation. Well, we started our Women in Power series for Women's History Month with a legendary editor-in-chief and we're going to end the series with one, too. Today on the show I have Kate Betts, former editor-in-chief at Harper's Bazaar, a longtime colleague of Anna Wintour's at Vogue, and the author of one of my all-time favorite memoirs, My Paris Dream: An Education in Style, Slang, and Seduction in the Great City on the Seine. In addition to My Paris Dream, Kate also wrote the book Everyday Icon: Michelle Obama and the Power of Style and reveals in our chat today that she's working on a third book, which I will devour when it comes out. I first interacted with Kate when I interviewed her for an oral history piece I did in Vanity Fair on Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy's wedding dress back in 2021—I love that piece, and I'll link it below. Of course, I'd known of Kate and her work for 25 years prior to us speaking three years ago. After graduating from Princeton, one of Kate's first big roles was at Fairchild Publications' European office in Paris, a period of her career that she calls essential to her development as a fashion journalist. Kate was a features writer for the Paris bureau of Fairchild, overseeing fashion coverage for Women's Wear Daily, W, and M magazines. In this role, she also helped launch W Europe. After two years, she became the bureau chief, and in 1991, she left Paris and Fairchild for New York City and Conde Nast, where she took over as fashion news director at Vogue. She created Vogue's Index section, and in 1999 took over as editor-in-chief at Harper's Bazaar. In a testament to Kate's ferocity, three days after starting at Bazaar, she gave birth to her first child. Kate was a new mom, and the youngest editor ever at America's oldest fashion magazine. She hired two writers I adore, Bret Easton Ellis and Lynn Hirschberg, and after leaving Bazaar in 2001, Kate freelanced for The New York Times, specifically its Styles section. In 2004, she became the editor of Time's Style and Design section, and she remains a contributing editor there still today. In addition to freelancing and writing books (as if that's not enough!), she reports on fashion for CNN, and today we talk about her formative career experiences, her books, what she'd tell her younger self, and she leaves us with incredible book recommendations to add to our “To Be Read” pile. Emotional eating is not the problem, but a sign of a deeper issue. Sometimes it feels like food can provide a solution, but it's only – and always – temporary.Geneen Roth is the author of several books on our relationship with food. She talks with Arina about how diet culture makes it harder for women to break the emotional eating cycle, and recommends seven guidelines to help people break free from destructive patterns, like eating without distractions and stopping when the body has had enough.Geneen also reveals how emotional eating can be an opportunity to examine deeper issues and limiting beliefs that may be holding people back.LinksThis Messy Magnificent Life: A Field Guide to Mind, Body, and Soul – Geneen's latest bookWomen Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost EverythingWhen Food Is Love: Exploring the Relationship Between Eating and IntimacyFeeding the Hungry Heart: The Experience of Compulsive EatingFat is a Feminist Issue, by Susie OrbachGeneen's next Zoom retreat

Quote of the day: “When you believe without knowing you believe that you are damaged at your core, you also believe that you need to hide that damage for anyone to love you. You walk around ashamed of being yourself. You try hard to make up for the way you look, walk, feel. Decisions are agonizing because if you, the person who makes the decision, is damaged, then how can you trust what you decide? You doubt your own impulses so you become masterful at looking outside yourself for comfort. You become an expert at finding experts and programs, at striving and trying hard and then harder to change yourself, but this process only reaffirms what you already believe about yourself -- that your needs and choices cannot be trusted, and left to your own devices you are out of control (p.82-83)”― Geneen Roth, Women, Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything My answer to last week's question of the week: I'm a “C/D” personality type, I overanalyze, then get tired of things taking too long, and charge ahead, sometimes leaving a wake of destruction….or half done things….behind me. Stories from real life/what I'm doing to create more liberty in my life: Prepping for Teen Catalyst event Homestead updates: Piglets Wild bunnies Setting hens with different personalities News/personal development article highlight/book review: I've deviated from my reading list that I set for myself at the start of the year. I haven't given up on it, but I've inserted a couple other books that struck me. One is called ‘The Purpose Driven Youth Ministry, the other one is the ‘The Case for IBC'. IBC is the infinite banking concept, the idea of becoming your own banker.I don't fully understand it, but I'm highly interested and excited about the potential I see in it to build generational wealth, and I'm trying to get someone on the podcast to talk about it. Also, go listen to https://afarmishkindoflife.com/205-personality-matters/ (A Farmish Kind of Life, episode 205). I had the pleasure of chatting with Amy Dingman all about personalities. It was a fantastic chat. Main topic: Don't allow other people to control you. Set out to do a thing, and we over analyze it. We allow other people's fears to control us We have a first instinct for the thing but end up listening to the voices inside our head or from other people telling us we can't do the thing, we don't have what it takes Then before we even have a chance to get started and suck at whatever it was, before we have a chance to learn the lesson that getting started would teach us, we get derailed and quit. If you go back to when you were a child, most likely you LOVED new experiences. You LOVED the zoo, and all the crazy looking animals. You LOVED going to the beach and picking up all the strange looking creatures and seeing how far out you could swim. You climbed as high as you could up the tree. You met and played with new people. You LOVED trying new food….wait….what? No you didn't. No kid likes trying new food. You explored new places and tried new things every chance you got. The fears you experienced came from the people around you. If your mom or dad was the fearful type, you too became fearful. If they were afraid of you being kidnapped, you too became afraid of every new person you saw. Another thing that may have made you cautious of trying new things is the fear of failure. School is a HUGE driver of the fear of failure. Everything we do in school is judged by the percentage of failure. You turn in a test paper and it's marked up with red ink accentuating all your failures. You're benched from the game because of your failures. You're forced to try to improve on things you're not naturally good...

There’s a growing trend in Wellness Culture where opinions and recommendations are increasingly standardized, leaving little room for nuance or exception. Today Erin gives us a peek into how her mind operates in this opinion episode on our wellness and diet culture, and it’s centered on a recently released intuitive eating nutrition book that has a large portion of the wellness world falling into two camps: FOR or ANTI. Unfortunately this leaves a lot of folks who are simply searching for some help to think they have to “choose a side” when it comes to their health. Who’s to blame for this polarization and distortion? Where has our compassion gone? In this episode, you won’t hear Erin take a hard stand for or against this topic, or even defend her own position. Instead she asks questions about our collective reactivity - in the nutrition space and beyond - and attempts to understand what that means about us. How can we utilize that reactivity to affect the change we’re looking for? This one is certainly food for thought... 11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV 9-13 But in the end, does it really make a difference what anyone does? I’ve had a good look at what God has given us to do—busywork, mostly. True, God made everything beautiful in itself and in its time—but he’s left us in the dark, so we can never know what God is up to, whether he’s coming or going. I’ve decided that there’s nothing better to do than go ahead and have a good time and get the most we can out of life. That’s it—eat, drink, and make the most of your job. It’s God’s gift.Ecclesiastes 3: 9-13 The Message 11 He has made everything beautiful and appropriate in its time. My guest today, Mary Hyatt, is a life and business coach. She helps her clients become awake to their feelings; aware of their thoughts, patterns, and habits; anchored in feeling confident in who they are; and aligned with identifying their voice and desires. What I loved most about the conversation Mary and I had today were her teachings and insights around how we, as women, can harness the power of our emotions in the work that we do as parents, entrepreneurs, and go-getters in this world. Mary shows through the work that she does that we do not need to numb out, suppress, or deny our emotions in order to work harder, better, or more efficiently. The real power comes from harnessing our emotions and leveraging them in what we do. In this episode, Mary shares her personal journey with understanding her emotions and the beautiful transformation she experienced once she understood and acknowledged her emotions and how they showed up in her body. She shares how we can tap into our emotional body, how we can understand and recognize the warning signs before getting to a place of burnout, how we can begin to cultivate self-awareness around checking in with ourselves and our emotions, and how we can learn how to become truly present and true to ourselves. Mary's words are profound and her insight is incredible. It is truly my pleasure to introduce you all to Mary Hyatt! Key Takeaways: [1:08] About today's episode! [1:54] Welcoming Mary Hyatt to the podcast! [2:34] Mary shares her story and how she got to this place in her career. [8:38] The first steps for taking radical responsibility in your life. [12:30] What happened to Mary's physical and emotional manifestations when she started to own where she was at and engage in a pathway that was more empowering to her? [16:30] The profound shift you can experience both physically, emotionally, mentally, and beyond, when you gain control of managing your mindset and state of emotion. Mary also speaks about science and history behind our emotions being connected to the body. [19:47] Mary shares why she thinks some people are afraid of experiencing the full spectrum of emotions that we all experience as humans. She also shares how we can begin to expand our emotional vocabulary and become more in tune with it. [25:02] Mary speaks about how giving people back control and vocabulary over their emotions is a significant part of her work as a life and business coach. We are more empowered when we can accept and understand our emotions rather than deny them or numb ourselves out. A key tool in taking the first steps to better understanding our emotions is to expand our emotional vocabulary. We are more than just ‘sad,' ‘happy,' or ‘mad.' Mary and I would love for all of you to try and expand your emotional vocabulary by spending time reflecting on the nuances of the emotions you feel throughout your day and journaling them down. Take the time to identify their complexities and acknowledge their existence. Resources How I Stopped Fucking Randos And Started Cupcaking My Soulmate by Heidi Busche WISE - Women Introverts, Sensitives, & Empaths Podcast by Ashley Pardo Women, Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything by Geneen Roth School of Greatness Podcast by Lewis Howes Episode Highlights Ashley's Transition to Coaching Entrepreneurial Introverts Ashley first started working in corporate human resources. Deep down, she had always known that it wasn't for her. Struggling with eating disorders most of her life, she wanted to help others to have a good relationship with food. She got her master's degree in food studies then went to a cooking school and ended up working on farms in Italy. Ashley's Recovery From Eating Disorders As early as ten years old, she started struggling with eating disorders. She did therapy but never went to a recovery center. The book by Geneen Roth called Women, Food, and God helped her tremendously. People have to learn how to deal with food and develop an internal drive to make the right decisions. At age 32, she started helping women with their emotional eating and became a certified nutritional therapy practitioner. Experiences in Cooking School and Working in Italy She learned the classic and meticulous style of preparing French cuisine in cooking school. Ashley recognized that it was not accessible for home cooks. She joined an organization called WOOF (Worldwide Organization Opportunities on Organic Farms). She also had an opportunity to live on farms in Italy for three months and learned a sustainable and easy way of cooking. Through that experience, she aimed to teach people how to cook by publishing content online. She worked for people who wanted somebody to cook in their homes; it taught her quick thinking and selling tactics. Ashley's Likes and Dislikes in Cooking She loves to bake and prepare classic French dishes. To know more about her favorite recipes, listen to the full episode! Her least favorite is cooking and preparing chicken meals. Being an Introverted Entrepreneur Ashley considers herself as an introvert, but she cherishes meeting and talking to people. She used to be very timid and soft-spoken at first, but she got through it by practicing. Be willing to suck if you're going to be an entrepreneur. Go ugly early. Video and voice communication build intimate connections. If you're going to be in the online business for the long haul, start now. Be in a community that does the same thing as you so that you can talk about your struggles easily. Tips for Introverts Starting in Entrepreneurship Introverts have an advantage when it comes to connecting with people. It has been one of their quintessential traits. Provide solutions for specific problems. Be aware of your customers' struggles, thoughts, and fear points. How to Do Market Research on Your Customers Pay attention to what people are talking about. Listen to media outlets like social media and television. Assist people with the same problems you once had. In that way, you know how to help them inside and out. Conduct 15-minute free coaching sessions and take notes. Making a Relationship Work Relationships are hard, but having excellent communication and honesty with each other helps. Keep an open mind. Express your appreciation to your partner. Be mindful of your partner's triggers. Fascination with Tarot Cards Ashley is very spiritual, and tarot cards keep her grounded. Tarot and crystals are only tools to connect deeply with yourself and to other people. Having a structure and routine every day can be beneficial for emotional women amid the COVID-19 crisis. Tarot cards only confirm your intuition. Interpret what it means to you and integrate it into your life. Ashley's Daily Non-negotiables Exercise. Although it is called non-negotiables, be flexible when it's not available to you. Advice for Struggling Introverts Because introverts think a lot, they must be reminded of the importance of taking action. Perform one piece of action you can do today to get near to your goal. Any action is a good action. Just start doing something, whether it's little or big steps. The confidence and momentum you build up will propel you as you move forward. 5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode “If you have something that you're not addressing, it's not the symptom. It's the cause.” “If anybody's out there listening who is starting their business, go ugly early.” “Any action is a good action.” “Sometimes it feels like we're taking action by thinking about something, you know, when we fantasize about it, like, ‘Oh, yeah, I'm thinking about it. It's happening!' It's not happening yet.” “I'd rather just not put pressure on the amount of action. Just start doing something. And the momentum that you gained from that, and the confidence, and the forward motion that you're going to have from just doing one thing is going to be the thing that keeps you moving forward.” About Ashley Ashley Pardo is a body-mind business coach, nutritional therapist, and a private chef. She is the host of WISE Podcast, dedicated to women, introverts, sensitives, and empaths. Ashley is on a mission to change the lives of entrepreneurial introverts everywhere. Hey mama, Today on the show I share a beautiful piece from a book called Women, Food and God by Geneen Roth. I think this book must be passed on from mother to daughter! Every woman must read this book so that she establishes a healthy relationship with food and God. You'll hear me read a story from one of her retreats and how women heal their life long battles with food, body image problems, insecurities, overeating, undereating, binging, using food as comfort, and other self-destructive patterns we all do. What God has got to do with it? In short, everything. It will make more sense after you listen. The road to healing is messy, however embracing the messiness in what you have to be willing to go through in order to get to where you want to go. This work is hard and it requires time, but it is so worth it. This is your life's work! There is no benefit to you or to your family in dwelling on or commiserating how bad your life is and how hard it is for you to step out and do something about it. As far as I know, all that matters is your will. Everything else will unfold for you. Just trust the process. I want to hear from you! Do you resonate with Geneen's message? Find me over at IG and share your thoughts with me @healthbeginswithmom (if you're not on IG, you're welcome to email me dorit@healtbbeginswithmom.com) Looking forward to hearing back from you! Helene describes a low point in her life, where she had a series of relationships that didn’t succeed. She spent several years working on herself. She challenged herself to explore what she really wanted in a relationship, to identify what was important to her, and what she wanted to experience in life. Helene viewed the loss of her job as an opportunity. After 20 years in corporate America, Helene started utilizing her coaching education full time. Q & A Why is self love important to you personally? For me, without self love, there’s no way to be as fully yourself in this world. It’s too easy to be swayed by other people’s thoughts and opinions. . . What was the number one thing that was holding you back from accepting self love? I think, in the beginning, I didn’t even know what it was, or why it was important. . . Nobody had ever talked to me about it.” What is the best advice you have ever received? To feel the fear and do it anyway. What is a self care habit that you practice regularly? Journaling. Every day. I write about my life as I want to experience it and as though I am already experiencing it that way. Do you have a favorite quote? “Be the change that you want to see in the world.” Can you share with us a resource or an app that we can use to help our own self care practice grow?
