Fitness has a unique way of boosting confidence by showing you what your body and mind are capable of achieving. The discipline of working out can translate into a stronger belief in yourself, helping to push through self-doubt. Overcoming negative thought patterns often starts with small mental shifts—like focusing on progress instead of perfection—and celebrating even the smallest wins. Cultivating self-acceptance and resilience takes time, but it begins with treating yourself with the same patience and encouragement you'd offer to someone you care about. Brooke Ence is a fitness enthusiast and former CrossFit competitor. With a diverse background in sports and dance, Brooke has carved out a unique path, navigating the challenges of the entertainment industry and embracing her authentic self. Today, Brooke shares her career story, discussing her experiences in the Wonder Woman and Justice League films, and the importance of self-awareness and confidence in overcoming insecurities. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “I am not good at pretending, and I don't mean in the sense of acting. I mean, I can't cover up my feelings. If I feel something or know something, I'm either going to ask the question or I'm not.” – Brooke Ence “I had to work through my own feelings and insecurities every day. At this point, I'm older. I've done a lot of growth for myself.” – Brooke Ence “I want to be the person that you would assume I am based on things you watch online, social media, interviews, and in-person interactions.” – Brooke Ence Takeaways: Develop self-awareness through regular self-reflection, identifying the root causes of insecurities and challenging negative thought patterns. Celebrate the unique strengths and capabilities of your body and embrace physical fitness as a means to build confidence and resilience. Practice compassion and uplift others by offering genuine compliments, encouraging a culture of mutual support and empowerment. Seek out mentors and role models who embody authenticity and inspire you to stay true to your values. Approach new experiences with an open mind, recognizing that each opportunity can offer valuable lessons, even if it doesn't align with your long-term goals. Conclusion: Physical fitness plays a vital role in enhancing not only physical health but also mental and emotional well-being. Regular movement and exercise provide the strength and focus needed to face life's challenges with confidence and clarity. Beyond its physical benefits, fitness supports a balanced mind and a sense of purpose. By prioritizing physical activity, individuals can build a foundation for a healthier, more resilient life.

In this episode, we explore the power of opening up and expanding our bodies for enhanced well-being and healing. We talk about some ways we can stretch and open ourselves up and release ourselves from our tension, traumas, and stress. And the great thing is that when you open up one part of your body or life, it often acts like a domino, spreading to many other areas simultaneously (not just in your body, but also mind, behavior, and life). Because everything exists within an interconnected whole. The first step is simply recognizing that the body naturally moves between states of expansion and contraction, opening up and closing in, tightening and loosening, holding on and letting go, stress and relief, etc. It's a basic phenomenon of nature that we humans are simply part of. When we understand that, we can more easily solve our various health problems and feel better. This concept of expansion and contraction underpins most other health concepts that we often hear about. It connects them all together.Taking primarily a bottom-up approach, we explore the idea that working with the body can yield quicker and more effective results. While incorporating a top-down perspective (from the mind to the body) can be beneficial, our primary emphasis today lies in utilizing the body as the tool for transformation. We go through various different body parts and explore simple ideas on how we can open each of them up and get the energy flowing again, thereby bringing us relief and to a calm positive happy space. Our journey takes us into the parasympathetic nervous system, characterized by relaxation, calm, and tranquility. It's a departure from the stress-inducing fight-or-flight response that many of us find ourselves trapped in. Imagine a serene and expansive oasis, where we can let go of tension and embark on a gentle voyage toward inner peace. That's where this episode is trying to take you. More importantly, it is meant to teach you how to find your way back there any time you want all by yourself, long after you finished listening to all this. You will learn to reconnect with your body and let it guide you. Regain independence and control over your own health. Learn to trust and use your body and, together, become your own doctor. This episode offers a unique opportunity for active participation. While listening, I encourage you to engage in the exercises and movements discussed. By physically opening up, expanding, and moving our bodies, we deepen our connection to what we're learning and also experience immediate benefits. Education is more powerful, memorable, and useful when it is active. Today's ideas transcend theory and move directly into your body, allowing you to tangibly and immediately enhance yourself physically, mentally, socially, existentially, and in so many other ways. You can literally transform your entire being, on every level. Learn, grow, and enjoy :)
A decade ago Taryn Brumfitt posted an unconventional before and after photo, which disrupted the diet industry, and since then, Taryn has created documentaries and programs to help women, children, and soon to be men, appreciate their bodies for what they can do, rather than what they look like. Taryn was recently awarded Australian of the Year, and through the criticism and backlash, she continues her mission, and brings her insight to The Wood Life. Then, we're tackling Winter wives tales… should you really ‘feed a cold, but starve a fever?' or ‘gargle salt water to cure a sore throat'? Does chicken soup really have healing properties? Sam unpacks the origin of these wives tales and how much truth, if any, there is to them. Have a question for Sam? Guest suggestion? Or some positive news to share? Let's face it, many of us are in a disparaging relationship with our bodies. We transpose an innocent comment from a friend into a deposition on our appearance. We beat ourselves up—sometimes literally—every time we gain a few pounds, go on a crash diet, then cheat on that diet, throwing our body into a seesaw of coping strategies to try to force the outcome we feel we should be at. The truth is: our environment influences our body image. We pick up on the body-image culture from seemingly everywhere: school; work comments; friends; parties; television; magazines with size zero models on every page - it's never-ending. From our earliest days, we hear our physical appearance is critically important in every facet of our life. One off-putting look or perceived slight can send us into crisis mode. If we are not careful, we pass this mindset onto our inner circle and to our children. Now, we know how we got here. The question is, how do we break out of this unhealthy mindset and get not only comfortable with our bodies, but have a healthy relationship to accepting our bodies confidently? In this powerful conversation with Molly Goodman, a life coach and intuitive mentor, we unpack the unlearning journey as it relates to body image, how toxic diet culture is, and how to release the shame that so many of us have with relationship to our bodies and instead focusing on how to prioritize what makes your body work, feel good and function best over constant thoughts of losing weight and what you see in the mirror. In this episode of Embracing Enough, I sit down with Molly Goodman, life coach and intuitive mentor. Molly is a Certified Life Coach dedicated to helping women develop intuitive self-trust and heal their body image. She guides clients into the gray area of life so they can abandon perfectionism and diet culture, instead of abandoning themselves. Using a unique combination of coaching, creative self-care techniques, and mindset makeovers, she teaches her clients to love and respect their bodies exactly as they are. It's her mission to help women honor their needs, observe their habits, infuse magic into everyday life, and expand into that next level version of themselves. When she's not helping clients ditch diet culture for good, she love seeing live theatre, watching Schitt's Creek, and drinking too many vanilla oat milk lattes. One of the hardest lessons for women to learn is that you have to eat for strength training to work. The first inclination is to “eat less and exercise more.” Of course, it's been the message on social and unfortunately, even from the fitness industry, for years. 00:00 This episode and my guest will dispel those age-old myths. We're going to look at the needs of women over 40, and discuss what lifting heavy means. We'll share what she recommends for lifting frequency for women over 40 and explore optimal training as well as how you know you're lifting the right weight. A frequent question I've been asked is who should I have my daughter follow? Depending on the age and stage of your daughter, I may have any number of responses, and this guest is definitely someone we love here at Flipping 50. Picture this: You're seventeen and walking to your car after work and a man follows you, puts a knife to your throat, and puts you in his car. Angela Rose, victim empowerment advocate and founder of PAVE, which stands for Promoting Awareness | Victim Empowerment, kept her cool and remembered everything that happened to her the day that she was abducted and sexually assaulted. But what would you do if the first set of officers assigned to your case failed to make you and your parents feel safe? Would you give up on the process and let your assailant walk free? Or would you persevere, ensure that he was sent to prison and start an organization to empower victims from all walks of life? I love this story and was particularly in awe of the plain and beautiful way Mr. Shompole Ole Leroka brings us into what it was like to grow in Maasailand, Kenya in the 1930s and 40's.. Dare to Defy captures the efforts of an individual in Africa as he breaks the constraints of ethnic traditions and carves a path for himself in a fast-changing world. Told in a detailed, humorous and captivating manner, the memoir traces the life of Shompole Ole Leroka as he moves from a pastoralist base by the Shompole Hills on the Kenya-Tanzania border, to Kiserian, a fast-urbanizing setting in independent Kenya. It is a story about relationships, betrayal, love, education, diligence and ambition; an engaging narrative of the pleasure of parenthood, the joys of community life, the value of land, the making of a nation and the effects of globalization on individuals and on the Maasai community. What if you never experienced violence while growing up in your all-Black neighborhood, but when you moved to a city, which is less than 2% Black, violence found you for the first time? Tim Barnes, comedian and television writer grew up in South Central Los Angeles and was stabbed by a stranger after moving to the tony city of Santa Barbara, leaving him to wonder if it was a random stabbing or had he attacked because he was Black? But what would you do if every time you were presented with an opportunity you wondered if it was because of your qualifications or because of your race? Would you decide to play it safe and work in a world where everyone looked like you? Or would you become a writer on one of the most-watched late-night shows in history, and become the voice of the ones who aren't in the room? We loved MJ's episode so much that we asked her permission to read a couple of excerpts out of her critically acclaimed YA book, Badass Black Girl: Quotes, Questions, and Affirmations for Teens. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, M.J. Fievre's publishing career began as a teenager. Since then, M.J. has authored nine books in French that are widely read in Europe and the French Antilles. She works with underserved populations in need of writing as a form of therapy—even if they don't realize that they need writing or therapy. A long-time educator and frequent keynote speaker MJ is available for book club meetings, podcast presentations, interviews, and other author events. What if you were born with a rare form of dwarfism, and the doctors told your parents that you would never lead a normal life, that things like running, biking, or even walking without assistance might not be possible for you? 4'4, Actor/Stuntman, Pro Drummer, podcaster, and Surfer, Christophe Zajac Denek, found it challenging to watch the other kids grow taller around him, but he didn't want to let that deter him from living life to the fullest. But what would you do if society told you to stay small, but you knew that you were meant for greater things? Would you decide to just take the roles that were assigned to you? Or would you shock everyone and become an in-demand drummer, actor, and a stuntman, and let the whole world know that you were “kind of a big deal”? Orlando “Ori” Spado is best known as The Hollywood Mob Boss and we were lucky enough to interview him (episode 106, The Only Accidental Gangster In The Room). You'll want to hear him tell this particular story in his own words (and voice) but I had to read it to you because I love it so much. Orlando (Ori) Spado sold insurance for the Prudential Insurance Company where he was a leading agent for years. Eventually, he moved to Beverly Hills, California where he became known as a Hollywood fixer doing favors for A-list celebrities and others. People referred to him as the Hollywood Mob Boss. In 2008 he was arrested at his home in Beverly Hills and brought to Brooklyn on a Colombo crime family RICO indictment. Ori finished his time at the U.S. Federal prison in Lompoc and returned to Beverly Hills, where he is involved in a few film projects and other legitimate businesses. His critically acclaimed book, The Accidental Gangster, is the true story of his life, he lived it, he owns it and takes full responsibility for his actions of the past. Imagine meeting the underboss of the Colombo crime family and unexpectedly ending up with a friendship that would last for the next 40 years. Orlando, “Ori” Spado, went from insurance salesman to Hollywood Mob Boss, until he went to federal prison on a Colombo crime family RICO indictment in 2008. But what would you do if after getting out of prison you had a chance to tell people what it was really like to be on the inside of a life that so many of us revere and fear? Would you be too afraid to tell the truth? Or would you write The Accidental Gangster, the real story of your life, and take full responsibility for the actions of your past? Peter Sage's story is so incredible that we made his episode our season 10 finale The Only One In The Room Who Was Grateful To Be Imprisoned (Episode 99). Please don't forget to go back and listen to his incredible interview after you hear today's reading of two excerpts from his best-selling book, The Inside Track. Peter Sage was sent to the most violent prison in the UK as the only non-criminal prisoner. Instead of playing the victim, he chose to identify as a ‘secret agent of change'. He went from mentoring frustrated billionaires to transforming the lives of his prison inmates. He wrote letters to his supporters documenting his entire experience which later became an award-winning book ‘The Inside Track'. Peter is a 6 time TEDx speaker whose multiple #1 bestselling books have sold over 150,000 copies in several languages. He's shared the stage with high-profile people such as Sir Richard Branson, former US President Bill Clinton, and many others. Sofia Rose, critically acclaimed Latina performer, published model, pioneering BBW pornstar became an adult film actress knowing that she'd be fetishized by some and criticized by others. We shared Jennifer Eikenhorst's heart-wrenching/heartwarming story with you in season 10: The Only One Who Found Hope After A Deadly Accident (episode 96). I encourage you to go back and listen as she unravels the events that lead to the death of a motorcyclist named David. This year on the 5th anniversary of his death, Jennifer wrote this beautiful essay and I asked her if we could share it with you. Jennifer Eikenhorst is the host of Accidental Hope podcast. She is a mom of four, a wife, and a middle school math teacher. Her story changed when she caused an accident that killed someone. What if you, a tenured professor at a prestigious university wanted to buy your mother a home and the bank treated you like a suspect instead of a prospect? Dr. Tonya Evans, professor at Penn State Dickinson Law School who was recently named to the Forbes 50 over 50 list, in the category of investment, teaches her students how Crypto Currency can bypass the old guard gatekeepers and be the key to creating generational wealth for everyone, but especially for our underserved communities. But what would you do if an entire institution was threatened by the fact that you are educating others about a new currency that doesn't involve, gold, banks or brokers? Would you change your curriculum to something safer? Or would you create a popular course called From Cash to Crypto and explain how BlockChain works to the world? There are over 4.7 million people in California caring for a relative or close friend, and many of them are COVID 19 patients. The media is filled with the stories of COVID 19 patients and healthcare workers, but what about the people who are dedicating themselves to taking care of a loved one? Scott and I couldn't find many of those stories, so we asked AJ to come over and share hers with us. AJ Johnson is an LA native and mom of two beautiful girls. She's been a wealth manager for over 28 years. AJ is a world traveler, an avid NFL and UFC fan who loves snow skiing and is engaged to Gregg Garfield, who was a guest on The Only One In The Room not once but twice for our COVID Warrior's series, once to talk about what it was like to be the first patient with COVID 19 at St. Joseph's hospital and then we got to follow up with Gregg in late 2020. Be sure to check out both of those episodes. Imagine getting your MFA in acting at Harvard and then moving to Los Angeles only to find that the parts you're auditioning for were either the Chola or the gangbanger? Screenwriter, Emmylou Diaz, whose credits include Jane The Virgin and Charmed, decided to take a writing class one day after realizing that she wasn't being taken seriously as an actress. But what would you do if you got a job that turned into a new career? A career that gave you the opportunity to write on some of America's most successful shows? Would you just be grateful for the chance to do something that only one-fourth of one percent of the US population gets to do? Or would you take this opportunity to write the parts you'd hoped for back when you were an actress? “It was very early and I was still in bed when I heard someone yelling from my backyard. When I pulled the curtain back and saw a bunch of armed men jumping into my backyard, I first thought I was dreaming. But before I could figure out what was going on, they started shooting at my house. I froze by the window and my heart was coming out of my chest but I gathered all my strength and ran into my parent's room. My dad jumped out of bed, he was going in the direction of the shots but I grabbed him and begged him to stay. We all gathered in a small windowless space. We were hearing gunshots, the sound of broken glass, and some vague noises.” -Azita Alavi Azita Alavi is a Human Potential Coach, who has dedicated herself to helping People Discover their Greatness and Unlimited Potential through Raising Awareness and Mastering their Neuro-Communication. Once there was a girl who discovered that while period products seemed to be widely available to everyone, there were still many girls and women who were forced to use trash to absorb their menstrual flow every month. Twenty-Three year-old Harvard graduate, Nadya Okamoto founded PERIOD.org at the age of sixteen and in 2020 she co-founded August, a lifestyle brand working to reimagine periods. But what would you do if even after all your work and dedication, 4 in 5 US students were missing classes because of lack of access to period products and periods were still the main reason why girls were missing school in developing countries? Would you move on to a cause that made people feel more comfortable? Or would you start posting your period blood on TikTok and demand that the world starts paying attention? Picture this, you're five years old and your mom is cooking dinner, like she does every night. Suddenly the air around your home is filled with screams and gunfire. Robert Kabera, Stanford graduate, co-founder, and COO of Sync Energy A.I., survived the 1994 Rwandan Genocide with his family by hiding in tunnels, evading soldiers, and spending six years in refugee camps. But what would you do if after graduating from one of America's most prestigious universities, you discovered that 90% of Africa is not banked and that many of the people there were living off of the energy grid? Would you decide to ignore the problems of your home continent and focus on the USA? Or would you launch business after business aimed at helping people in various African countries and find yourself on the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in the energy sector? Transparency…it has always been my secret weapon. And what I like to call the ultimate backfire! If we take our mess. If we take our struggles, and let the Lord use them, by being completely open, Satan starts to run out of things to hold us in bondage to. This is an interview I did on the Compared to Who? Podcast with Heather Creekmore. In this episode I am very open about my struggles with food addiction. I share some of the powerful truths the Lord has used to help me stand strong and fight this battle. Katie Sturino is a true powerhouse and the ultimate advocate for women! Whilst her start in luxury PR sounded like a dream job, life at Chanel and Dolce and Gabbana was far from a fairytale. By 25 Katie realized that going it alone was the power move she needed to play and to do it her way! She started her own PR firm, launched the career of the original “dog of Instagram'' her beloved Toast and amassed an army of followers with her body positivity posts. Katie has used her platform to start conversations with brands to increase their offering and be more size inclusive. Her hilarious videos are as engaging as they are effective. Taking the shame off of women and shifting the blame onto brands for not catering to all women. But she didn’t stop there, after years of shopping for personal care products targeted at women’s needs she found herself staring at shelves full of jock itch powder and wondering why nothing was for the girls! It was there that she was compelled to create MegaBabe! Perfectly packaged powerful products that solve issues like chafing thighs and sweaty boobs initially had people giggling and doubting... but Katie laughed all the way to Target and Ulta where they sit on the shelves in every store! Now Katie has written a body positivity journal workbook Body Talk: How to Embrace Your Body and Start Living Your Best Life. If she is not the definition of Mega Babe I don’t know who is!

A simple ‘before and after’ picture Taryn posted online resulted in 8000 women reaching out to share their own tales of body dissatisfaction, and that’s when her body image revelation - and revolution - started. Now a best-selling author and director of the social-change documentary, Embrace, Taryn’s won a stack of global awards and accolades and celebrities’ support...but that’s not why she continues to push for self-love and acceptance. It’s moments like meeting a woman in her seventies who broke down crying after seeing unedited vulvas in Embrace...and feeling ‘normal’ for the first time in her life. Many thought-provoking and freeing conversations ahead in this episode, and Taryn also opens up about finding herself suddenly single at 40+ following the end of her marriage, how she coped with being alone during 2020, and the trepidation and excitement of finding a new love. We all know the seasons are going to change. Summer turns into fall and fall will turn into winter. Each season may be shorter, longer, milder or harsher than another, but we know with full certainty the next season will always come. And with all things, change is inevitable and unavoidable. My question to you is, as the world around you is changing, how are you going to change with it? Are you going to be chasing a future that is better than your present? Or, are you going to continue living your life defined by the emotions and experiences of your past? If you are locked into who you were yesterday, you'll never be able to become a better version of yourself tomorrow. If you want to transform your life, you need to embrace change, and not only embrace it, but strive for it. If you are going to bed at the same time, hanging around the same people, intaking the same information, eating the same foods, doing everything exactly the same in your life, how do you expect to ever jumpstart change in your life? You need to step out of your comfort zone and experience something new. In this episode, I challenge you to adopt change in your life. Your ability to adopt change determines whether or not you survive or thrive in your life. No one wants to just survive, so let's do what it takes to thrive. My only question is, are you ready?
