Leadership isn't a skill most lawyers learn about until forced to (on the job). This is probably why I get so many questions from lawyers about how to be an effective leader. And why I wanted to bring today's guest on to talk about the qualities of a good leader. Join me and fellow lawyer, podcast host, and law firm owner, Brian Beckcom, for an insightful discussion about what makes a good leader and the leadership qualities to adopt for yourself. The post #193: Lawyer Leadership: Qualities Of A Good Leader appeared first on Life & Law Podcast.
Join Alex and friend-of-the-show returning guest host Jason Spiegelman as they discuss the leadership and heist psychology of the remake Ocean's Eleven (2001), directed by Steven Soderbergh and starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Julia Roberts, and so many other amazing actors. The art of con, deception, and planning are central foci in the discussion, along with leadership styles and some fun trivia about the movie. They also invoke several comparisons of these same concepts and themes in the immediate sequel Ocean's Twelve (2004). This discussion is a steal! Summary In this conversation, Amas Tenumah and Bob Furniss explore the critical themes of leadership, empathy, and the evolving dynamics in contact centers, especially in the context of AI integration. They discuss the importance of creating a safe and trusting environment for employees, the need for compassion in leadership, and the distinction between finding meaning from work versus meaning at work. The conversation emphasizes that as technology advances, the human element in leadership becomes even more vital. Takeaways Empathy can be learned but is often defined differently by individuals. Leaders must create a safe space for employees to express themselves. Hope, trust, compassion, and stability are essential for effective leadership. The relationship between agents and managers is changing with AI integration. Employees need to feel safe to express unpopular opinions without fear of repercussions. The shift towards a people-based business model is crucial in contact centers. Meaning at work is derived from relationships, not just salary. Compassion in leadership helps employees feel valued and supported. AI should enhance human interactions, not replace them. Leaders should regularly assess if they are providing hope and trust to their teams.

A good school leader knows how to protect their staff from initiatives and fires they may need to put out on a regular basis. In many cases if you're unaware of everything your school administrator is dealing with, it means they're doing their job well. This lack of awareness of what happens behind-the-scenes may mean little appreciation for everything administrators are dealing with. While negative perceptions exist towards teachers and other school staff members as well, the public tends to be even more unforgiving towards those in leadership positions. Yet despite all the negativity, I'm optimistic. Part of that is because of the many conversations I've had with public sector leaders. When you remove the parts from the whole, and speak with the individuals who are part of the bigger system, it's easier to see past the politics and have an appreciation for the work being done. That's why I'm highlighting impactful clips from three past interviews focused on the struggles of school leaders, as well as what's possible when we put the right supports in place for students, teachers, and the people leading them. These interviews feature discussions on:✅The impact of social media on the perception of education, and shedding light on the “behind-the-scenes” challenges of principals. ✅The importance of positive adult role models in shaping kids' beliefs about what's ✅The power of K-12 education in creating life opportunities. ✅Using meditation to decrease disciplinary write-ups and increase your own creative problem-solving.✅How to use the 85% rule to support your mental health and show up for your students. For this episode, David shares 8 leadership skills that when learnt and applied well can turn a good leader into a great one. We are living in an increasingly complex world. The leadership of the past won't help you in the world of the future. People are too well informed, and things move too fast for the traditional lead and command approach to work. Today´s leaders must lead by example and empower their teams to take the right action quickly. David shares the 8 attributes today´s leaders need to cultivate to ensure that they can do that effectively. David helps owners and leaders to build their business without having to do it all themselves, so that they have a business that is ready to sell when they are ready. To build your business, so it is ready to sell, without the frustration and overwhelm, Download David's Free Guide '3 reasons you will never sell your business and how to fix it FAST! https://businessbreakthrough.live/3reasons/3-reasons KEY TAKEAWAYS The traditional lead and control approach no longer works. Empowerment is more important. Great leadership makes a huge difference when it comes to staff retention. Replacing someone and getting them productive typically costs between £15k and £50k, so good leaders are vital. Great leaders create strategies for the future and select the right people to deliver them. Tailored support is essential. People need the right skills and tools to be able to grow and be empowered to deliver your vision. Make sure everyone feels heard. Effective communication is a crucial leadership goal. Keep in touch with the change as it is happening. Spot problems bubbling up and tackle them before they become a crisis. Great leaders have very strong emotional intelligence. That starts with self-awareness, understanding your strengths and weaknesses, and your natural orientations. A good understanding of your own emotional intelligence can help you to align the team to either avoid a crisis or take fast action in a crisis. Learn to keep your cool under any circumstances. BEST MOMENTS “A leader creates a vision …. and works to a longer horizon.” “How well do you as a leader, bring people together and motivate them as individuals to work together and all pull in the same direction?.” “How do you show up each day? … The behaviors you exhibit will be copied and emulated by people that respect you.” “Being an agent for change is not just coming up with ideas, and then swanning off to let everybody else deal with the chaos that you've created.” “Delegate how that crisis is handled.” “How comfortable are you taking a calculated risk, both to prevent a crisis and to resolve one?” EPISODE RESOURCES Maslow - https://www.verywellmind.com/what-is-maslows-hierarchy-of-needs-4136760 ABOUT THE HOST David Roberts is a highly regarded CEO, mentor, and investor with 30 years of experience across multiple sectors. Witnessing abuse firsthand can ignite a deep sense of responsibility, especially when the pain feels personal. For someone to take on that kind of burden, it often comes from a mix of anger, love, and a refusal to let the story end in suffering. The road forward is rarely straightforward—facing setbacks, self-doubt, and even resistance from others. But through persistence and a focus on creating change, they can rise as a leader, not just carrying their own scars but using them to inspire strength and hope in others. Mick Hunt is a dynamic force for meaningful change. Through Mick Unplugged, keynote speeches, and coaching, he combines strategy with inspiration to help leaders and athletes achieve lasting growth. His "MICK Factor" ethos—Mastery, Imagination, Character, and perseverance to Keep Going—builds legacies, while his top-rated podcast sparks ambition and resilience worldwide. Today, Mick stresses the importance of finding one's "because" - the driving force that propels us forward even in the face of adversity. Join in as young leaders pose inquiries about life, personal development, and beyond! Quotes: “Your 'because' is what shapes who you are. It influences the decisions you make and, ultimately, determines the course of your life.” – Mick Hunt “You're never too young to put together a blueprint for your life, and you're never too old to say the buck stops here.” – Mick Hunt “Mastery keeps you innovative. The world is always changing, with new things happening all the time. Mastering something helps you stay relevant.” – Mick Hunt “If you lose sight of making a difference in the lives of other human beings, it is going to be unfulfilling in every way.” – Matt Beaudreau Takeaways: Identify your "because" - the driving force that propels you forward, even in the face of adversity. Use this as a guiding principle for your decisions and actions. Conduct regular "circle checks" to evaluate the people in your life and ensure they align with your goals and values. Be willing to distance yourself from those who do not. Practice making the right decisions, even when they are unpopular. Prioritize your standards over appeasing others' feelings. Commit to mastering a skill or passion. Use this as a foundation for innovation and staying relevant in a rapidly changing world. Embrace the role of mentor and leader, even if you don't have a formal title. Focus on developing other good leaders, as this is the true mark of success. Conclusion: Discovering and embracing your true purpose provides clarity and direction, even during difficult times. It serves as a steady anchor, helping to navigate challenges with focus and determination. By staying connected to what truly matters, you can approach adversity with a sense of meaning and resolve. This commitment to purpose allows for growth and fulfillment, regardless of the obstacles faced.
