Welcome to The Daily, where we study the Bible verse by verse, chapter by chapter, every day. Today's shout-out goes to Randy Gothrup from Bellaire, MI. Thank you for your partnership with us through Project23. This one's for you. Our text today is Judges 9:16-21. “Now therefore, if you acted in good faith and integrity when you made Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house and have done to him as his deeds deserved—for my father fought for you and risked his life and delivered you from the hand of Midian, and you have risen up against my father's house this day and have killed his sons, seventy men on one stone, and have made Abimelech, the son of his female servant, king over the leaders of Shechem, because he is your relative—if you then have acted in good faith and integrity with Jerubbaal and with his house this day, then rejoice in Abimelech, and let him also rejoice in you. But if not, let fire come out from Abimelech and devour the leaders of Shechem, and let fire come out from the leaders of Shechem and devour Abimelech.” And Jotham ran away and fled and went to Beer and lived there, because of Abimelech his brother. — Judges 9:16-21 Jotham is the only surviving son of Gideon after Abimelech's massacre. While his brothers are slaughtered, Jotham steps up as a lone, bold, and brave voice of truth. From Mount Gerizim—the mountain where Israel once heard blessings and curses—he warns the leaders and people of Shechem. His message is blunt: if choosing Abimelech was good and faithful, enjoy it. But if not, then fire will come from Abimelech to consume Shechem, and fire from Shechem to consume Abimelech. (Spoiler Alert: This is exactly what happens by the end of the chapter) Jotham speaks like a true leader—pointing people back to integrity, truth, and accountability before God. But everyone ignores him. And in time, his warning proves true. Bad leaders will burn you. It may not happen overnight, but their corruption spreads like wildfire. They promise protection but leave you scorched. Jotham reminds us that the leaders we choose—and the voices we follow—shape our future. Good leaders warn, guide, and protect, even when their words sting. Bad leaders manipulate, consume, and destroy, even when they look impressive at first. Are you listening to the Jothams, or following the Abimelechs? Get more Jothams. Remove the Abimelechs. Because the kind of leader you trust will determine whether you blossom or burn. ASK THIS: Where am I tempted to follow flashy leaders instead of faithful ones? Who are the “Jothams” in my life I need to listen to right now? How can I discern if a leader is bearing fruit or just making noise? Where might I be acting like Abimelech instead of leading with integrity? DO THIS: Identify one leader you're following—online, at work, in church. Ask: Do they leave me more faithful or more burned out? Adjust accordingly. PRAY THIS: Lord, help me follow leaders who point me back to You, and keep me from the fire of bad leadership. Amen. PLAY THIS: "Shepherd."
Bad leadership doesn't just hurt engagement. It can literally hurt people. Studies show that working under a poor leader is one of the leading causes of stress, contributing to health issues like cardiovascular disease. On the other hand, great leaders don't just make work enjoyable. They shape culture, values, and even society itself. In today's Leadership Spark, I explore why leadership matters more than ever and what it will take to be a leader in the future. I share insights from my extensive research, including interviews with 140 CEOs from some of the world's biggest organizations and a global LinkedIn study with nearly 14,000 employees. Together, these conversations reveal how leadership is being redefined in the face of AI, globalization, and the changing expectations of employees, and why every leader needs to rethink their role as a lighthouse for the future. ________________ Start your day with the world's top leaders by joining thousands of others at Great Leadership on Substack. Welcome to the Inverted Orthodoxy Podcast! We're Blake, Kyle, and Doug the pastors from Living Springs, here to take you on a weekly adventure through the twists and turns of faith. Got questions? We've got answers, and sometimes more questions! This week, the pastors answered the following questions:1. AER Should you be able to feel sorry/ relate to Mark Driscoll and not Donald Trump, or are they equally despicable and egotistical?Should we not, as Paul indicates to the Corinthian church, judge such things/ people/ actions for the betterment of the corporate church? For the integrity of the body of Christ? Definitely, we should have a “there go I by the grace of God " attitude, but why should we excuse Driscoll by saying he was young and given too much power? Isn't that what has corrupted every crooked person from Hitter to Trump to Driscoll ( we'll stop there though there are a few more contemporaries to mention). You don't have to bring this into the podcast; but I did need to ask you why you would see him as a cautionary tale instead of yet just another bad seed? Thanks for letting me sound off.2. Okay. This question has to do with the idea of eternal life after death, and being a devout Christian. eternal life seems to be a lot of people's “why” when it comes to being a follower of Jesus Christ,That if they follow Jesus they will be with him and God after death, in Heaven, at peace. That Is what I gather from listening to many speakers in my church. So my question is: say you have a person who does not worship God or Jesus Christ, but they are trying to live with an open heart, doing their best to improve and striving to do good each day, and you have someone who goes to church each week and studies scriptures and also strives to live with an open heart each day.Do both of these individuals get eternal life? Can people be followers of Jesus Christ without knowing it?even if they do not worship him or think about him?I feel like I just created many more questions!3. Struggling business? Missed deadlines? Sloppy work? A disengaged team? Who’s to blame? Most point fingers at their crew. “They don’t care. They don’t listen. I just can’t find good people.” Sound familiar? But what if the real issue isn’t them... it’s you? The shift from being on the tools to leading the business is one of the most pivotal moments in any tradesperson’s journey. Many skilled tradespeople build successful businesses based on their technical expertise, but to scale and achieve sustainable growth, they must evolve into effective leaders. Stepping away from the tools doesn’t mean losing control — it means leading with purpose. It requires trust in your team, clear communication, and a commitment to personal growth. The best trades businesses aren’t built on one person’s hard work alone—they thrive when a strong leader builds, supports, and drives the team forward. In this episode you’ll learn:

A mark of our generation is that too many have been hurt by bad leadership in the church. Paul knew that good leaders were necessary for healthy churches. Character matters.
Steve Sallis, an author, teacher, and mindset coach, dives into the real qualities that make or break a leader. He doesn't hold back, calling out bad leaders as people who don't listen, lack vision, and often have a streak of narcissism. Steve opens up about his own experience being bullied at work by a narcissistic boss, something that hit him hard emotionally. That difficult chapter in his life led him to write a book for young professionals, helping them spot toxic leadership early on. His years working in tough London schools, where gang culture and knife crime were part of daily life, gave him a unique perspective on what it takes to lead well—starting with self-awareness and creating a supportive, safe environment for everyone.Over time, Steve developed the strategic mindset needed to lead effectively. For Steve, it's all about pairing confidence with competence—because while confidence gets you started, it's skill and awareness that make you truly successful. He's big on the idea that ego can wreck communication and relationships, and without self-awareness, even the most confident leader will struggle to inspire their team. What really fires Steve up is his belief in building strong, high-performing teams by recognising and playing to people's strengths. It's not about ego—it's about helping your team win. And for him, leadership is a journey of continuous growth, learning, and improvement.Take Your Business to New Heights: Book Your Spot at the UK's Biggest Business Event to hear from Global Thought Leaders and Industry Pioneers in 2025:https://thebizx.co.uk/Powered By ActionCOACH Business Coaching: The Help You Need to Grow Your Business: https://business.actioncoach.co.uk/ Hosted on Acast. Ethics in LeadershipIt's an interesting topic and at times can be very controversial. Peter Drucker was an Austrian American management consultant, educator, and author, whose writings contributed to the philosophical and practical foundations of modern management theory. He famously said “The only definition of a leader is someone who has followers”This statement has led to some interesting classroom discussions as well as arguments about leaders. In my courses I typically lead with a few definitions of leadership and then ask the class a question. I ask them to give me a list of “Good Leaders.” What follows is an interesting take on leadership. We will typically start with George Washington, Mahatma Gandhi, Winston Churchill, Abraham Lincoln, and then the class will typically throw in George Patton, Bear Bryant, and then a modern president. Which president however is based on where the class is being taught. This is where the arguments start. Leaving the list of “Good Leaders” on the board I ask the class for a list of “Bad Leaders.” This list starts with Adolf Hitler, followed by Joseph Stalin, and Pol Pot. Jim Jones and David Koresh are added as the classes input starts to wind down. And then someone will throw out the name of the same modern president that was on the “Good List.”Defining leadership as “someone who has followers” might be accurate from a technical point, but it fails to address what I believe is one of the major elements of leadership. Ethics. Those leaders in the “bad List” are leaders, they moved countries, cultures, and peoples to do some truly horrific things, but I could never look at them as leaders because to me ethical leadership is the most important element.I believe that ethical leaders can lead anyone, but unethical leaders only lead unethical people, the rest they will drag along against their will.Let's take a look at ethics, morals and ethical leadership.

There's plenty of advice on how to grow into a better leader. And it takes effort to become more effective. But bad leadership gets worse almost effortlessly, says Barbara Kellerman, a Center for Public Leadership Fellow at Harvard Kennedy School. She shares real examples from the public and private sectors of how bad leaders spiral downward, and how bad followership enables that negative trend. She gives her advice for recognizing and avoiding ineffective and unethical leaders. Kellerman is the author of the new book Leadership from Bad to Worse: What Happens When Bad Festers.

Unfortunately, there are too many crappy terminations being done by bad leaders. These are the terminations where the employee is not provided any information as to the reason, feels blindsided, and leaves the place of employment confused. Terminations are bad enough, but that doesn't mean we can't treat the employee with respect, kindness and compassion. Employees should feel cared for, even during the termination process.

Leaders breed leaders, not followers. Jason A. Duprat, Entrepreneur, Healthcare Practitioner, and Host of the Healthcare Entrepreneur Academy podcast, sits down with Richard Winters, Practicing Emergency Physician, Professional Certified Coach, and Author of the Wall Street Journal Best Seller: "You're the Leader. Now what?" In this episode, Jason and Richard dive deep into what it really means to be a Leader, Manager, Mentor, Teacher, Supervisor, and Coach, and why it's important to have each hat in your toolkit. Tune into this episode for timeless wisdom every leader should hear about. 3 KEY POINTS: Leaders inspire others to become leaders. Leaders create synergy among everyone's differences. Leaders shed light on people's fears and help overcome them. EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS: Richard recently published a wall street bestseller entitled "You're the Leader. Now What?" To be a better leader, be open to, understand, and discover different perspectives, and try to bring them together. A big part of becoming a better leader is those moments where you like you didn't do a good job and you're trying to learn how to be better. Continue to learn from mistakes and continue to learn from them. For Richard, leaders are individuals who help develop other leaders. They help others get the best out of a team and individuals. Management is more focused on what needs to be accomplished. Both Leadership and Management skills are crucial for any Manager/Leader. Richard wrote an article entitled "Four things that good leaders do when facing obstacles that bad leaders don't" talking about leaders shedding light on people's fears and worries. A coach helps make someone makes sense of their world. Many leaders are micromanagers, but that doesn't tend to work out well. Both sides will feel frustrated. There are three levels of delegation. Assigning someone a simple task Assigning someone a project, having them come up with a plan, and discuss that plan with you before moving forward Assigning someone a project and letting them have full responsibility It's helpful to learn about each other and go through these delegation levels to gain insight into what works, what doesn't, and how we approach things. Richard believes in assuming the best and working from that perspective, rather than having someone earn that trust. If you're not giving your trust initially, you're giving them distrust. Personality tests help us give names to things, to think about the way we are, how we think, how we make decisions, how we work with others, and how we differ from others. It may not be as black and white as what's found in the test results, but it helps us have a language to understand our different approaches and how we can approach things together. Chris Clews, speaker and author, bring us rules to live by for good and bad leaders straight from the 80s! Again! He has such a valuable perspective to share (and we have laugh so much when we're together), I just had to have him back. This time we're talking about Road House and other 80s favorites. Plus if you're thinking about pivoting your career or there's a creative idea you keep thinking and dreaming about, Chris has some great advice on how to take action on it. Here's just a snippet of all the lightbulb moments you'll get from this fun and insightful conversation: Don't underestimate your opponent. Continue to expect the unexpected. Take it outside...to have the tough conversation. You don't always have to be nice. Be the Cooler as a leader. Time will pass regardless. How you use it is what makes the difference. It's always the right time to reinvent yourself. A new tattoo suggestion Do what's right for you...not what's expected of you No one knows what they're doing Act on those little ideas that you keep thinking about You have to put in the work to make your dreams come true We're all weird. Don't hide it. Start small and keep going. About Chris Clews Chris Clews is a speaker and author of the book series “What 80s Pop Culture Teaches Us About Today's Workplace.” Growing up in the 80s and with over 20 years of experience in corporate marketing he knew 2 things very well: 80s pop culture and business. So he combined the two and created “What 80s Pop Culture Teaches Us About Today's Workplace”. He's spoken to a diverse set of organizations and companies including Visa, DHL, University of Florida, UPenn Medicine, WIFS (Women in Insurance and Financial Services), DisruptHR and more. He's a frequent guest on podcasts with topics ranging from workplace culture to 80s pop culture and he has been referenced or interviewed in numerous publications such as Entrepreneur.com and Esquire UK magazine. A graduate of Elon University in North Carolina, Chris has held marketing leadership positions in a variety of companies ranging from Planet Hollywood to DHL. He's passionate about animal rescue and donates a portion of the proceeds from his book and speaking engagements to the SPCA International.
