In this discussion, Dr. Adam Watson, Co-founder and CEO of MeCo Diagnostics, shares the personal and professional experiences that led him to focus on cancer research and, ultimately, to launch his own company. From the profound influence of his family's battle with cancer to the long and complex journey of developing the MeCo Score™, he walks us through the challenges of translating academic research into a commercial product. Dr. Watson offers insights into the realities of working with a tech transfer office, the hurdles of bringing a biomarker test to market, and the tough decision of leaving academia to pursue entrepreneurship. He also reflects on the knowledge gaps he faced as a first-time founder and the strategies that helped MeCo gain credibility in an industry dominated by large pharmaceutical companies. Finally, we discuss the broader biotech landscape—how LA's biotech ecosystem can better support startups like MeCo, and what it will take for non–big pharma breakthroughs to gain traction in the market. Whether you're a scientist considering a leap into entrepreneurship or someone interested in the future of precision medicine, this conversation offers valuable lessons in perseverance, innovation, and the intersection of science and business.https://mecodiagnostics.com/ RSVP for BCLA 10th Annual Healthcare Summit: https://lu.ma/pecqtqut Follow our Instagram @insidebiotech for updates about episodes and upcoming guests! In this episode, we welcome back Partners Capital, and in a three way conversation, we explore the Asian investment opportunity set. The conversation brings together Arjun Raghavan, CEO of Partners Capital, Adam Watson, Partner and Co-Head of Asia Pacific, and to understand the perspective of a seasoned investor and allocator, Harvey Toor, CIO of Singapore Management University (SMU). SMU is a current client of Partners Capital and seed investor in one of its pooled investment portfolios. Arjun refers back to his comments a year ago of “2 mega trends, which are clear, but this is going to be a bumpy rise, sustainable investing & flow of assets into Asia” and sets the case for the structural opportunities of investing in Asia, but also to reflect on current institutional (under) weights. Harvey Toor describes the objective of the endowment he oversees, and explains how their investment approach has been constructed along the lines of the Yale Endowment Model. He highlights top-down considerations and why they invested with Partners Capital, given the need for resources, expertise, multi-assets and ‘boots on the ground'. Adam Watson defines both the geographical spread and the pool of potential investments, which include not only equity and debt, but important allocations to alternatives and private markets. This allows for a discussion on how venture, real estate and hedge funds also offer access to the heterogeneous opportunities across the region (which encompasses 60% of the world's population). It wasn't long before he broke the Reslo but he held on to it with the aim of repairing it one day. As the internet grew in popularity in the mid 90s, a few groups dedicated to old audio equipment appeared and Stewart received good advice from a number of fellow enthusiasts, including Dave Royer and Mark ‘Marik' of Samar audio. On learning the basics, Stewart started to look for other microphones to fix. Up until the 1970s the UK had some excellent audio manufacturers including Reslo, Grampian, Film Industries, STC and Lustraphone, but these companies had not been able to compete with new products from AKG and Shure. With no spare parts available these old ribbon mics were available for little cost and Stewart purchased as many as he could. This hobby eventually became a full time job in 2007, when he set up Xaudia to repair microphones for other owners. Over the next few years, he repaired and upgraded ribbon mics every day and estimates having worked on 400 to 500 microphones each year for ten years. In 2017, Adam Watson came on board and together they launched their own range of microphones under the Extinct Audio brand. These new microphones would be redesigned from scratch and manufactured locally. Most of the parts are made in the workshop in York, or by an engineering partner in Manchester, while the packaging is created by another UK company. All of the assembly for Extinct Audio microphones is carried out in-house.https://www.extinctaudio.co.uk/http://xaudia.com/Drew Stephenson BiogDrew Stephenson is a singer-songwriter, home recording enthusiast and occasional SOS contributor. Well, it all started in a garage. And his last name is Watson. Maybe all great things just start in a garage? This is On The Record, with Sloop Brewing Co.
In this episode I speak to Roger Wild - my father - about (some of) the history of ski touring in Scotland before moving on to describe our 2010 'Scottish Haute Route'. This 7 day journey from Ben Nevis to Gairnshiel near Ballater was around 155km in length with 10,000m of ascent. We pre-placed food caches, stayed in bothies, and skied on Nordic free-heel skis carrying our overnight gear with us. The route linked up the high ground through Lochaber to the Cairngorms, ascending numerous Munros and Corbetts along the way. Roger is a retired British Mountain Guide and a former Royal Marines Commando. Notes: 1. We talk about grip wax which goes on the ski under your foot on nordic skis to allow grip when that foot is weighted - not to be confused with the wax used to improve glide on downhill skis (and tips/tails of nordic skis) 2. Dr Adam Watson (1930-2019) was 85 when we met him near Banchory in 2016 3. For some reason I said I was a student in Aberdeen in 2010 - I'm not that young and was in fact a junior doctor then 4. We mention skimo race skis a lot but don't acknowledge that of course modern standard touring setups have gotten way lighter too - most people seem to like something in the ‘light standard‘ range rather than full race skis - which are harder to ski in some conditions, less stable, more expensive and less durable. For long journeys obviously low weight is key.

Adam believes strongly in education technology, but in that order. He loves to share his tips, tools and thoughts through his blog “Edtech Elixirs” and his YouTube channel (which combined currently have over a quarter million views), and is a frequent presenter at both international and regional conferences. Adam began as an English classroom teacher, eventually earning Teacher of the Year at South Oldham High School in 2009 and becoming National Board Certified in 2013. His belief in the impact of educational technology started with literature circle student podcasts. Not only did the students receive responses from authors of the books, but young adults as far away as China let them know their podcasts were a part of their own classroom experiences. The project led Adam and his students to the cover of Kentucky Teacher in April 2009 and coverage by NCTE. In 2014, a Core Content-aligned unit on “Shakespeare and Star Wars” culminated in a Skype Q & A with a New York Times best-selling author, Adam’s unit materials hosted on multiple sites, and a mention in Star Wars Insider in April 2015. In 2014, Adam became Shelby County Public School’s first Technology Integration Coach; he is currently Shelby’s Digital Learning Coordinator. He was hired to help lead the staff professional development on blended learning as Shelby began its K-12 1:1 initiative. This led to the creation of a “Share Fair” conference model (presented by Shelby staff, but open for all to attend) that has been a popular annual event since 2015. Among other achievements while at Shelby, Adam was the writer and adapter of a digital citizenship district curriculum that annually spirals through five focus strands and consists of 65 non-repeating K-12 lessons. In 2019, Adam was awarded the KySTE Outstanding Leader of the Year award as recognition of his outreach and service. In addition to his educational work, Adam is also a writer of poetry and short stories who has also written, produced and directed stageplays and radio dramas. His wife and two daughters inspire him to continue learning and writing, and they are always willing to watch a Star Wars or Marvel movie with him if he asks nicely. We love comics and we love creators who take their visions and dreams and bring them to life outside of the traditional publishing processes. This week we interviewed Adam Watson to talk about his project, Ghost Assassin, and the ongoing Kickstarter campaign. Ghost Assassin is the tale of a hitman-for-hire who has the ability to see and interact with ghosts. Unfortunately for David the ghosts are the people he's murdered. Adam's journey to bring this book to life has taken some wild turns and his marketing and distribution channel plan is just what the comic industry is needing right now. (hint: What are you reading at the tattoo shop while you get inked?) The art for this project is handled by Joel Cotejar and Charles Carvalho with coloring by Edward Bola and Gulliver Silva. The cover for issue #1 is penciled by Joel Cotejar with coloring by Ceci De La Cruz. Adam will be at I Like Comicon February 10 - 11 with merch and information about the project and the Kickstarter campaign runs through February 21st.
