One of the buzziest films of the month is Netflix's new movie Scoop starring Gillian Anderson and Rufus Sewell—it came out April 5 and is about the BBC's process of securing Prince Andrew to appear on its program Newsnight, which he ultimately did in November 2019. This interview, which largely touched on his association with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, ended Andrew's career as a working royal; his interview with Emily Maitlis aired on a Saturday, and by that next Wednesday, he resigned from his position as a senior royal. Today on the show we have the person responsible for securing that landmark interview, Sam McAlister, who was a producer and booker at the BBC at the time. Now, it's important to note—and Sam and I do this in our conversation today—how absolutely impossible the prospect of getting a senior working royal to sit down and talk about his association with a convicted sex offender is. After all, the unofficial motto of the British royal family is “Never complain, never explain.” Members of the royal family rarely give interviews, and they never give interviews where they are already set up to fail. But Andrew's ego led the way, and not only was the interview allowed to happen at Buckingham Palace, but it was allowed to air, as Andrew thought he did a great job. Oh, the joys of self-delusion. In the film, Scoop, Sam is played by actress Billie Piper, who called Sam an “unsung hero.” If you've seen Scoop, while Andrew will no doubt draw viewers in, it's actually Sam who is the star of the movie, and as I say today on the show, a central theme is the story of women at the top of their game banding together to change history. That's exactly what happened here. I interviewed Sam both for the show and for a piece I wrote about her for Marie Claire, and in doing so I watched the Newsnight interview for the first time since November 2019, and it is ridiculously painful to watch. Sam, in her book, calls the interview on Andrew's part “a masterclass in how to destroy your life.” By that Wednesday, as I said, Andrew had left royal duty, and in January 2022, his mother, Queen Elizabeth, stripped Andrew of all of his royal patronages and military titles, in a final coup de grace for her reported favorite son. It's also important to note that, in addition to just being associated with Jeffrey Epstein, Andrew was accused of sexual assault by Virginia Guiffre, who alleged that she was 17 when he had sex with her. In February 2022, Andrew settled out of court with Guiffre, and he has repeatedly, fastidiously, and continuously up to present day denied any of these allegations. Sam's book, Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews, came out in September 2022 and became the basis of Scoop, which is out now on Netflix. In the book, Sam—who is a single mother and a former lawyer—details booking many hard-to-book guests, Prince Andrew of course, but also Julian Assange, Amy Schumer, Stormy Daniels, and so many others. I am so excited for you to meet the dynamo that is Sam McAlister and learn about what she calls “45 minutes of TV history.” Scoops: Behind the Scenes of the BBC's Most Shocking Interviews by Sam McAlister My piece for Marie Claire about Sam, “Don't Be Fooled: ‘Scoop' Isn't About One Man—It's About the Power of Women”
The court may possibly disclose nearly 200 identities affiliated with the dismal saga of Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell, the notorious sex trafficking duo, as early as Tuesday. By this date, the anonymity previously granted to these individuals in court documents, named only as John and Jane Does, could vanish, unveiling the extent of their involvement. The revelation follows after the deadline to contest the exposure of these identities lapses at the end of Monday. This all started when Virginia Giuffre, a victim, instigated a solitary defamation case against Maxwell, the offspring of the deceased British publisher Robert Maxwell, back in 2015. This single case led not only to identifying other possible participants in the depositions but also triggered many other civil lawsuits. Guiffre's character assassination lawsuit, filed in 2015, proved to be a significant event. The following year, a US district court judge denied Maxwell's attempt to strike off the accusations, validating that the details around the events stretched far beyond the 'defamatory statements' and insisted on Guiffre's experiences as an underage victim of systematic sexual exploitation from 1999 to 2002. In 2017, the parties reached an extrajudicial resolution incognito. From this juncture followed not only the notable names now on the verge of disclosure but also a swath of civil lawsuits. Among these was Guiffre's suit against Prince Andrew of the UK for 'imposing sexual assault and deliberate infliction of emotional misery.'See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It's What's your Why Wednesday! Thank you Guiffre for sharing your why with us, you have a big heart and I truly appreciate you! Host: Laura Brandao What's Your Why is a MortFlix original series
Introduction: Minutes 0 to 8:30 We took an extra week off as I was sick. Chandra watched Dexter: New Blood and recommends it. She also loved The Lost Daughter and The French Dispatch. We both saw Belfast and thought it was cute. Chandra hated Being the Ricardos and Monday. I've been watching 9-1-1 and 9-1-1: Lone Star. They're so dumb. I also watched the Betty White documentary and have been watching Mount Everest reality shows. Royals: Minutes 8:30 to 25 Duchess Kate's 40th birthday was on January 9th. The pieces about her read like parodies. There were so many storiespuffing up Kate and claiming how perfect and amazing she is while promising she's going to be better. We also got three official portraits of Kate that were taken by Italian fashion photographer Paolo Roversi. She's wearing McQueen dresses and only one of the photos is in color. Her hair and makeup are different than usual and the photos don't look like her at all. After those came out we heard how private Kate is and how she's not flashy and doesn't want attention like Meghan even though she played the piano at her Christmas concert special. We also heard that William is still really into her. One of the most telling stories was the one about how she's focusing on her kids and isn't going to increase her royal engagements for the next 10 to 15 years. I play a segment from Zoom where we talked about this. The civil case against Prince Andrew filed by Virginia Guiffre is proceeding. Prince Andrew's lawyer tried to get it dismissed on technicalities, specifically the terms of a settlement agreement that Epstein paid Guiffre in 2009, and he also tried to argue that she does not live in the US. Those arguments were dismissed by the judge. The trail is likely to be later this year if a settlement is not reached. Prince Andrew, Sarah Ferguson and possibly Andrew's daughters Eugenie and Beatrice might be called to sit for depositions. Giuffre's lawyer said she's not just looking for a financial settlement. Her lawyer said it's important to her “that this matter be resolved in a way that vindicates her and vindicates the other victims.” Prince Andrew's patronages and military affiliations have been “returned to The Queen.” He still has his HRH titles but will no longer use them. This announcement was made after 152 British veterans wrote a letter to the Queen requesting that Andrew's military ranks and positions be stripped. Andrew has been protected and defended until this point. Meanwhile someone paid off 6.6 million pounds that Andrew owed on a Swiss ski chalet last year. While we were away we got a new photo of the Sussexes for their holiday card which was released to benefit charities. They looked so happy and relaxed. We talk about how the Sussexes highlight charities while the Cambridges highlight themselves. Novak Djokovic: Minutes 25:00 to 30 Serbian Novak Djokovic is the number one player in men's tennis and he's also a notorious antivaxxer. Tennis Australia told players that if they're unvaccinated they could get a medical exemption to come to Australia for the Australian Open as long as they had covid in the last six months. Djokovic applied for a visa using a medical exemption, which he announced. He was detained and sent to the quarantine hotel. He was eventually let out of quarantine and his visa was restored. There are rumors that he's still going to be deported. We also heard that Novak had covid on December 16th, which is weird because there are photos of him posing with kids maskless on December 17th. He then issued a statement saying that on that day he was waiting for the results of his PCR test, but that he didn't test positive on the rapid test. He also did an interview and photoshoot after he knew he had covid, but he didn't inform anyone at the magazine. Comments of the Week: Minutes 30:00 to end My comment of the week is from Eurydice on the post about Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly's engagement. Chandra's comment of the week is from Carrotface on the post with Kate's birthday portraits. Thanks for listening bitches!
According to the Netherlands health minister, the country plans to inject people with up to six doses of COVID vaccine. The plan would add three additional booster shots, because if one isn't enough, then try three. As the Omicron variant spreads, the CDC has the entire U.S. in the red for COVID transmission. Interpret that data as you will, but it certainly seems like something isn't working. Prince Andrew accuser Virginia Guiffre's legal deal with Jeffrey Epstein was released, showing she received $500,000 in her suit against Epstein. Will this information help Prince Andrew defend himself from Guiffre's accusations, or does it further her case against the Party Prince? After a brief holiday break, we're back and better than ever! Note: The content of this video does not provide medical advice. Please seek the advice of local health officials for any COVID vaccine questions & concerns. In Taking the Heat: Women Chefs and Gender Inequality in the Professional Kitchen (Rutgers University Press, 2015), Deborah Harris and Patti Giuffre trace the historical evolution of the profession, analyze more than two thousand examples of chef profiles and restaurant reviews, and conduct in-depth interviews with thirty-three women chefs. There are a number of recent books, magazines, and television programs that focused on the world of the professional chef. The media perpetually uses men as icons to market the hot and sexy field of being a chef in the professional kitchen. All the while, the work of women in the kitchen is discounted as a domestic role. This devaluation remains intact because of the exclusion of women in professional kitchens. This helps men maintain the legitimacy of the profession and perpetuates the appearance of home cooking as women's domestic duty. Dr. Deborah A. Harris is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at Texas State University. She focuses her teachings on courses in the area of stratification and inequality, qualitative research methods, rural aging, and the sociology of food. Harris's published research has addressed the impacts of welfare reform on low-income women and their families, as well as how the closing of military facilities affects local communities. Dr. Patti Giuffre is the Director of Graduate Programs in the Department of Sociology at Texas State University. She focuses her teaching and research in the area of work and occupation, gender, sexuality, and qualitative methods. She has conducted research on sexual harassment, sexual orientation discrimination, and experiences of LGBT workers in gay-friendly workplaces. She is also an active member of the American Sociological Associations sections on Sex and Gender and Organizations, Occupations, and Work and of the Sociologists for Women in Society. Michael O. Johnston is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at William Penn University. He earned his doctoral degree in Public Policy and Public Administration from Walden University. The Tao of Sports Podcast – The Definitive Sports, Marketing, Business Industry News Podcast
It's no longer just the role of the secondary market, but of the entire revenue stream via distribution channels, that gets discussed with Mike Guiffre, Vice President at TicketCity. Guiffre has been on the podcast prior, Ep. 461, but now, as a member of the secondary market, Guiffre has the distinction of working for both primary and secondary marketplaces. As Guiffre explains, there may not be a difference between primary and secondary anymore, simply more options for the consumer to purchase tickets from. Guiffre talks about some of the methods that franchises have employed, questioning the efficiency of hiring a slew of sales reps to make 100 phone calls per day, and what options lay ahead for franchise executives in general. The Tao of Sports Podcast – The Definitive Sports, Marketing, Business Industry News Podcast
The world of premium sales at the venue level requires a certain type of perspective on prospective client relations, as Mike Guiffre explains. This doesn't just means hitting the phones hard for 100 calls per day, but a data-driven approach with CRM that helps illuminate exactly who the client is, and what their capacity is as well. Guiffre presents the argument for how data analytics is being performed at the sports/venue level, and where it needs to go in order to improve. Some of those steps require less phone skills, and more information on how to deliver that message correctly in the first place. Twitter: @MjGuff
